How do I program a universal remote control without a code?
Don’t have TV codes? No problem. There is another method that does not require a universal TV remote control code. However, it requires you to have your old universal remote with you. And it requires a lot of manual programming. Here’s how:
Step 1 – Point the remotes towards each other
Find your old remote control and make sure it has fresh batteries. Then make sure your old and new universal remotes are facing each other. You want the LED lights on the remote controls to also face each other. Place them close together.
Step 2 – Locate the manual programming code
Look in the original manual for the universal tv remote control code that will enable your remote for manual programming. Locate your make and model number in the reference table in the manual. If you don’t have it, look for it online, contact the manufacturer, or try another method.
Step 3 – Enter the code
Press the SETUP button on the new remote control. Then use the keyboard to enter the TV codes for manual setup. After each key press, the LED button should light up. But it is not necessary.
Step 4 – Program the remote control
Now it’s time to program the remote control. On the new remote control, press the button you want to program.
Then press the corresponding button on your old remote control. Holding the button for a few seconds may help. The LED light on your old remote will flash to indicate your setting has been saved.
Repeat the process for each button on your new remote that you want to program.
Step 5 – Press Setup to exit
Then press the SETUP button on the new remote control to exit manual programming mode. Now press any button on your new remote control and check if it works with the TV.

If your TV remote suddenly stopped working, broke, or disappeared into the airwaves, you might be wondering if you can use a universal remote with your TV to replace it. The good news is yes, you can use a universal remote with any TV sold today.
To replace your TV’s remote control, you could purchase a device-specific remote control from your TV manufacturer, but this could prove expensive and is actually unnecessary. There are numerous third-party replacement parts available online for specific brands, and since manufacturers rarely change the infrared (IR) commands for their TVs, a remote designed for a specific manufacturer will almost certainly work on any of their TVs.
But the easiest option might be to buy one of the best universal remotes and as these are not brand specific they should be compatible with any of the best TVs from any manufacturer and as an added bonus they can control other devices too. These universal remote controls are available from most physical electronics retailers as well as online stores.
Whichever universal remote you choose, most use a set of unique code numbers to identify the various commands for the device you’re trying to control. Therefore, the extent of the initial setup will largely depend on how many devices you intend to use with your new remote and how easy it is to find each code.
Universal remotes usually come with a list of these code numbers, although you can find them online as well. Whichever approach you take, once you’ve found the specific code for your TV, simply enter it into the controller. If the controller is designed for more than one entertainment device, you can also add the codes to control things like a Blu-ray player, soundbar, or AV receiver.
Some of the more expensive universal remotes, like Logitech’s Harmony range, use an online database of devices, so all you have to do is connect the remote to a PC and download the IR commands for whatever devices you want to control. But if that sounds cool, you’ll need to buy a Harmony remote quickly, as Logitech no longer makes them and supplies are limited.
If you’re thinking about buying a universal remote, be sure to consider the size and shape of the zapper itself, because you want something that’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. Also think about the size of the keys, their placement and whether they are self-illuminating, as the latter can be very useful in the dark.
In fact, you might even consider a new universal remote an upgrade compared to the lost or broken TV wand – they might have a better layout, for example. However, there’s one manufacturer where a universal remote might feel like a downgrade, and that’s LG. The brand’s Magic Remote (ships with the best LG TVs) uses a pointer to control the TV, and while a universal remote still provides the IR commands, you lose that unique pointer capability.
That one specific example aside, the next time your dog uses the TV remote as a chew toy or disappears into the black hole between the sofa cushions, don’t panic. Buy a universal remote and not only will you control your TV like a champ again, but you can put all your other remotes in a drawer, making your living room tidier and your life less complicated.

Disconnect external devices (external USB hard drive, devices connected with HDMI cable, etc.) and cables from the ports on the TV to determine if a connected device is causing the problem. Do not unplug the TV’s power cord.
If connections are complicated, make a note of them and make sure you can reconnect everything before you start disconnecting devices or cables.

If you don’t want a universal remote, your device manufacturer should sell a replacement model. Visit the manufacturer’s website or call the manufacturer to see how they can help you. If the manufacturer can’t sell to you directly over the phone or the web, they should be able to refer you to the retailer nearest you.
Considerations when buying a new remote control
Remote controls have gotten smaller, but tend to have more buttons. Be sure to buy a remote control that fits comfortably in your hand and has buttons large enough to press without touching other buttons. Backlit buttons are also a nice perk when changing channels at night.
Durability is another issue with remote controls. When you look at different models in a store, it’s difficult to know which remote will meet your needs for performance and durability. This is where a good guarantee pays off. Equally important is the store’s return policy should you decide to return the remote control.
Cable and Satellite Subscribers
If your remote came from your cable or satellite company, you will need to call the company to get a replacement. If it’s broken, the company should provide you with one for free. If it is lost, you may have to pay a replacement cost.
Download a remote control app
Depending on the device you need to use, there may be a mobile app that acts as a remote control. Just open your web browser and search for your device name and remote control app. Some of the apps available for Android and iOS devices include:
The Comcast XFINITY TV Remote App for an Apple or Android mobile device works with Comcast TV boxes.
The Google TV remote control app works with Android TVs.
The Easy Universal TV Remote app works with a range of TVs.
The Apple TV app controls your Apple TV.
Smart TVs from LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic Viera and other manufacturers have apps that work with their TVs.

How To Program a Universal Remote Control Without the Instructions
The instructions for programming a universal remote control contain hundreds of codes for numerous manufacturers, which makes it much easier to sync devices with the remote control. However, if you have lost your instructions or never received them in the first place, there is no need to worry.
Universal remote controls can look up these codes in their database and then sync with other devices such as DVD players or VCRs. Of course, you can also look up the codes online by device type and brand.
Read on to see how to program your universal remotes without a guide.
Started
Before you start programming your universal remote control, make sure that the batteries are correctly installed and, if possible, fresh. When you press a button, the remote should somehow light up, but it can still be dim. Because of this, it’s best to swap out the batteries you already have, and you can always keep the old ones as a backup, provided they lit the remote leds or buttons. Weak batteries can affect the signal sent by the remote control and waste your precious time without knowing it.
Second, make sure you can establish a direct connection between your universal remote and the device you want to program. Closer is better. If something gets in the way (your cat, your child, or even an object) and the process is interrupted, you’ll probably have to start over.
How remote controls work
To better understand the programming process, it is important to understand exactly how your universal remote communicates with the device being programmed.
Whenever you press a button on your remote control, a signal is activated from the remote control circuit board to the other device. Basically, it sends a command code that tells your TV what to do. This is usually an infrared signal, so you must be within a hundred feet of the other device and in line of sight.
Unlike standard remotes, universal remotes have a wider range of compatibility, allowing them to be used with multiple devices. To program one of these remotes, you need to press a series of buttons to sync the remote and your TV (or other device).
Generally these codes are numeric, but sometimes they are a sequence of other keys. When the correct sequence is initiated, your remote will send commands to the other device, letting it know it wants to pair. Each receiving device has a specific sequence that it will accept, which can make pairing your remote quite difficult. But don’t worry, we’ll show you how to do it below.
How to program a universal remote control
You can use a universal remote to operate many devices, from TVs and VCRs to cable boxes, home theater receivers, and Blu-ray/DVD players. Programming can take some time under many circumstances, but here are some efficient ways to do it.
Method 1: Universal remote control user manual
These options may seem obvious, but it’s still important to mention. If you have the remote’s instructions or programming manual handy, this is the quickest way to get it working. The programming instructions show groups of codes for various branded devices such as Sony DVD players, Magnavox and Apex for RCA, Panasonic and Vizio TVs. Simply follow the code entry prompts and your remote should be ready in no time.
Aside from entering codes, the instructions provide help programming your universal remote control without codes. This scenario covers everything not listed in the manual. It also comes in handy if the listed codes don’t work for the intended device, which occasionally happens as the codes are based on the make and not the model.
If you don’t have the physical copy of the manual, you can probably find it online for free. Just locate the remote control manufacturer and look for a digital version of the manual. Then you can either bookmark it or print it out if you prefer a paper copy.
Method 2: Use the internet to find the code
This device code finder website can come in handy if you want to find the codes for an RCA remote based on the device you want to control. You can search other brands remote control on the internet to find related manual or code list. Some companies provide code lists for multiple remotes, while others only provide model-specific codes. Usually there is more than one code to try. Once you have the list of possible codes, you can manually enter them one by one following the online instructions.
As well as entering codes manually, the instructions will show you how to program the remote without codes, just like the original manual. You may even have the online version of the original manual, but variations and updated instructions are often found on the internet.
Method 3: Check the remote control
Remote makers understand that users can easily lose their instructions or simply throw them away when they think they no longer need them. However, replacing the batteries in a remote often resets the codes to the default settings, unless you have super-fast fingers or use the “one-battery-out/one-battery-in” method, which sometimes works. In any case, many remote controls have a quick start guide on the back.
Method 4 – Use automatic code search
In case you couldn’t find the codes for your device online, you can use the automatic code search option that we mentioned in options 1 and 2 above but without details. Universal remotes have a database of codes for many devices. The instructions explain how the codes are scanned automatically.
Alternate Methods
When it comes to more expensive universal remotes, they may offer additional programming methods such as: B. using the PC with audio waves or via a USB connection. In addition, some remote controls have auto-learning technology. Again, the features and programming details are in the manual.
Regardless of which remote control you have, if you can’t find a solution, consider the options outlined below.
