How do I program a universal remote control without a code?

Don’t have TV codes? No problem. There is another method that does not require a universal TV remote control code. However, it requires you to have your old universal remote with you. And it requires a lot of manual programming. Here’s how:

Step 1 – Point the remotes towards each other

Find your old remote control and make sure it has fresh batteries. Then make sure your old and new universal remotes are facing each other. You want the LED lights on the remote controls to also face each other. Place them close together.

Step 2 – Locate the manual programming code

Look in the original manual for the universal tv remote control code that will enable your remote for manual programming. Locate your make and model number in the reference table in the manual. If you don’t have it, look for it online, contact the manufacturer, or try another method.

If your TV remote suddenly stopped working, broke, or disappeared into the airwaves, you might be wondering if you can use a universal remote with your TV to replace it. The good news is yes, you can use a universal remote with any TV sold today.

To replace your TV’s remote control, you could purchase a device-specific remote control from your TV manufacturer, but this could prove expensive and is actually unnecessary. There are numerous third-party replacement parts available online for specific brands, and since manufacturers rarely change the infrared (IR) commands for their TVs, a remote designed for a specific manufacturer will almost certainly work on any of their TVs.

But the easiest option might be to buy one of the best universal remotes and as these are not brand specific they should be compatible with any of the best TVs from any manufacturer and as an added bonus they can control other devices too. These universal remote controls are available from most physical electronics retailers as well as online stores.

Whichever universal remote you choose, most use a set of unique code numbers to identify the various commands for the device you’re trying to control. Therefore, the extent of the initial setup will largely depend on how many devices you intend to use with your new remote and how easy it is to find each code.

Universal remotes usually come with a list of these code numbers, although you can find them online as well. Whichever approach you take, once you’ve found the specific code for your TV, simply enter it into the controller. If the controller is designed for more than one entertainment device, you can also add the codes to control things like a Blu-ray player, soundbar, or AV receiver.

Some of the more expensive universal remotes, like Logitech’s Harmony range, use an online database of devices, so all you have to do is connect the remote to a PC and download the IR commands for whatever devices you want to control. But if that sounds cool, you’ll need to buy a Harmony remote quickly, as Logitech no longer makes them and supplies are limited.

If you’re thinking about buying a universal remote, be sure to consider the size and shape of the zapper itself, because you want something that’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. Also think about the size of the keys, their placement and whether they are self-illuminating, as the latter can be very useful in the dark.

In fact, you might even consider a new universal remote an upgrade compared to the lost or broken TV wand – they might have a better layout, for example. However, there’s one manufacturer where a universal remote might feel like a downgrade, and that’s LG. The brand’s Magic Remote (ships with the best LG TVs) uses a pointer to control the TV, and while a universal remote still provides the IR commands, you lose that unique pointer capability.

That one specific example aside, the next time your dog uses the TV remote as a chew toy or disappears into the black hole between the sofa cushions, don’t panic. Buy a universal remote and not only will you control your TV like a champ again, but you can put all your other remotes in a drawer, making your living room tidier and your life less complicated.

If you don’t have access to the codes specific to your devices, searching for brand codes is another option for programming your remote. As with Auto Programming, Brand Code Search allows you to search for a specific device code using your remote control. The difference here is that you need to know your device’s brand code or look it up online.

Make sure the device you want to pair is turned on and that the remote control has working batteries. Press and hold the appropriate device button. While still holding the device button, press and hold the power button on the remote control. The power button should light up. Release the power button and the device button at the same time. The device should remain on. If not, repeat the previous steps. Enter the brand code using the numeric keypad on the universal remote control. Press and release the power button on the remote control a few times until the device turns off. Once the device turns off, press the stop button to save the code. If the device you’re connecting to doesn’t turn off, you need to try a different programming method or make sure you’re using the correct brand code.

Whichever option you choose, remember to check that your remote control has batteries before you start programming. And make sure you can point your universal remote at the device you’re connecting to; Otherwise you will not be able to program your remote control. IMPORTANT: If you use a third-party tuner, e.g. a set-top box (cable box), you may only be able to switch channels with the supplied third-party remote control. The original Sony remote control does not work.

Top Tip – our quick recommended fix

Before attempting any of the troubleshooting steps below, we recommend removing the batteries from the remote for about a minute. Then reinsert the batteries according to the polarity (+ and -). If the problem persists, continue with the troubleshooting suggestions below.

After each step, check the function of the remote control.

Check your TV

Make sure the buttons on your TV work. If this is the case, skip the steps below and troubleshoot the remote control instead. If the TV buttons don’t work, follow the instructions in this section.

Note: TV button locations may vary. Check the sides, back, front and top of your TV.

Check if the lamp (operation lamp/standby lamp) on the front or bottom of the TV is lit. Note: Depending on the model, the name, position and shape of the lamp vary. If the lamp is on or flashing red, continue to the next step.

If the lamp does not light, check the power supply or power cord to make sure it is not unplugged or loose. If there is no problem with the connection, continue to the next step. Disconnect external devices (external USB hard drive, devices connected with HDMI cable, etc.) and cables from the ports on the TV to determine if a connected device is causing the problem. Do not unplug the TV’s power cord.

If connections are complicated, make a note of them and make sure you can reconnect everything before you start disconnecting devices or cables.

If a specific device is connected and the lamp blinks, there may be a problem with the connected device.

If the TV buttons still don’t operate the TV, the TV may need service. Go to Product Repair.

Check your remote control

After each step, check the function of the remote control.

Press each button on the remote twice to ensure no buttons are stuck. Reset the remote control. Open the battery compartment cover and remove the batteries. Press and hold the power button for three seconds. Put the batteries back in and close the battery compartment cover. Clean the battery terminals with a cotton ball or soft cloth dipped in some rubbing alcohol. Replace old or dead batteries with new ones. Be sure to insert the batteries with + and – in the correct position.

Do not use a new battery and a used battery or batteries of different brands together.

Do not use a battery. Perform a power reset. If the problems are caused by an external factor such as B. network service, data transmission or connected devices, they can be solved by restarting the power supply. For Android TV models, see How do I power reset my Android TV article.

If the problem persists, other troubleshooting options are available based on your remote control type. Note: The steps vary depending on whether your remote control is infrared (IR) or wireless. Most TV remotes are IR remotes. If your remote does not have the IR character, refer to the wireless or touchpad remote instructions. Troubleshooting the infrared remote control An IR mark identifies an infrared remote control and is usually located on the bottom of the remote near the model number.

If you have followed the steps above and the problem persists, the TV may need to be repaired or the remote control replaced. Go to Product Repair.

What you should know There is no need to purchase a device-specific remote to replace a lost remote.

A universal TV remote control works with any device model from almost any manufacturer and can be compatible with multiple devices.

A remote control app is also a good option as it is available from most manufacturers and can be operated using a smartphone or tablet.

If you’ve lost your remote or it stops working, there’s no need to buy a device-specific replacement. There are universal remotes that are compatible with multiple devices, and there are even mobile apps that you can use as a remote until you buy a new one.

Replace a broken or lost remote with a universal remote

Big box stores like Target and Best Buy carry a range of universal remotes. They are not brand specific, allowing you to program universal remote controls and use them with any device model from almost any electronics manufacturer. Most universal remotes work with multiple devices, allowing them to control your TV, cable box, and other peripherals like DVD players and streaming devices. Just read the package to make sure your devices are compatible.

Depending on how many devices you use with your remote, the initial setup may take a while. Universal remotes sometimes come with a list of code numbers for a huge list of devices. You have to look up each device you want to use and then type the appropriate code on the keyboard. Newer remote controls handle this automatically.

Buy a remote control from the manufacturer

If you don’t want a universal remote, your device manufacturer should sell a replacement model. Visit the manufacturer’s website or call the manufacturer to see how they can help you. If the manufacturer can’t sell to you directly over the phone or the web, they should be able to refer you to the retailer nearest you.

Considerations when buying a new remote control

Remote controls have gotten smaller, but tend to have more buttons. Be sure to buy a remote control that fits comfortably in your hand and has buttons large enough to press without touching other buttons. Backlit buttons are also a nice perk when changing channels at night.

Durability is another issue with remote controls. When you look at different models in a store, it’s difficult to know which remote will meet your needs for performance and durability. This is where a good guarantee pays off. Equally important is the store’s return policy should you decide to return the remote control.

Cable and Satellite Subscribers

If your remote came from your cable or satellite company, you will need to call the company to get a replacement. If it’s broken, the company should provide you with one for free. If it is lost, you may have to pay a replacement cost.

Download a remote control app

Depending on the device you need to use, there may be a mobile app that acts as a remote control. Just open your web browser and search for your device name and remote control app. Some of the apps available for Android and iOS devices include:
