I’ve been painting a lot more lately – almost done painting our huge two-story staircase and upstairs hallway, and last week I also painted our guest bedroom. (Details on these coming soon!) I really enjoy painting… but patching, sanding and prep is NOT my favorite. I’ve had tons of nail holes over the years for puttying moving pictures and hanging things that aren’t bad. BUT those larger holes from anchors and screws are very troublesome to repair and paint over. Not to mention that drywall anchors can be annoying in and of themselves – I’ve had many that just didn’t work or pulled through or didn’t open at the back like they were supposed to – so frustrating! And get her out? Ughh…makes even more of a mess when sometimes you have to pry them out with pliers, creating an even bigger hole. But not anymore! I will no longer have those big holes that you have to fill/putty/putty then sand then usually fill and sand again until smooth or deal with a drywall anchor that doesn’t work. And of course I couldn’t withhold this clever tip from you!

This large heavy window (I screwed 2 D ring hangers on the back to hang it with) and this mirror with 2 hooks on the back hangs VERY securely on the wall. I didn’t use a drill, anchor, or even a hammer, and there are only tiny nail holes in the wall…

I think I saw a commercial for it or maybe I saw them online a while ago… but I added them to my list and picked them up next time I was out. $3.98 for a 10-pack at Home Depot definitely didn’t break the bank either (since screws and anchors usually cost more anyway.) No hammer, no screwdriver, no drill – no tools required and they work perfectly on drywall and can hang up to 35 pounds!

You stick the dot into the wall exactly where you want to hang your item on the wall. You keep pushing into the wall and sort of twisting until only the tiny little hook is sticking out. So your hook will look exactly like this – the hangar part on the outside of the wall and the long hook part inside the wall will hold against the drywall and hold your item perfectly.

The Monkey Hooks hold up to 35 pounds and there is also a heavier version called the Gorilla Hook that can hold up to 50 pounds. They also have a low profile option for picture frames with the sawtooth hangers on the back or something that needs to be completely flush with the wall.

Even better – they’re easy to remove and can be used over and over again (unlike drywall anchors). I’m gradually converting everything I have on the wall to these monkey hooks as I paint and hang things back up or add new decor.

Remodeling Tip: How to Fill Nail Holes

As I mentioned in my last DIY post, we live in an old farmhouse that is constantly under construction. So of course we learned a few tricks when it came to conversion and DIY. Also, Mr. Gracious used to work in a furniture store before starting his career as a firefighter, so he’s got a few extra tricks up his sleeve.

One of the tricks that never ceases to amaze me is the way it fills nail holes after applying trim. Normally you would pick up a wax filler pen

from your hardware store in a similar color to your stain or paint color. These are a bit pricey, especially since it’s just a piece of wax. Mr. Gracious’ method of filling nail holes is ingenious and far more economical in my opinion.

Now that I’ve piqued your curiosity, are you ready for his trick on how to fill nail holes? He uses a colored pencil

to fill nail holes! Yes, a crayon! If you have kids at home, you almost certainly have crayons! And if you’ve got one of those giant boxes of 96 crayons, you almost certainly have the color you need already on hand, and it’s a lot cheaper than your typical wax filler.

How to fill in nail holes with colored pencil

For small nail holes like you would use for trimming, just grab your matching colored pencil

, and rub the nail hole with firm pressure, just like coloring. This will fill the nail hole.

If you get some crayon on the trim outside of the hole, that’s fine. Just take a dry rag and wipe over the area. The crayon will come off immediately.

For larger nail holes you can use a similar method to the above but the crayon

It sticks better in the hole if it’s just a little softer and more malleable. So take a lighter and warm up the crayon, just a little bit. Be careful here. You want it to be just a little softer but not drip all over the place. You certainly don’t want hot wax dripping down your hand. Then rub the hole with the soft colored pencil. Wait for the chalk in the hole to harden. You can then rub off the excess with a dry cloth.

Pretty easy, right?

To hang projects flat against the wall, I use a product called Monkey Hooks, which simply push through drywall and support up to 35 pounds each. They also have a big brother, Gorilla Hooks, priced at £50. You can use these hooks to hang shelves, wall art, picture frames – anything but a heavy cabinet – anywhere as long as the hole for the hook isn’t directly above a stud.

To set the ends of the hooks, I use a Kreg jig to drill pocket holes in the back of the project. The trick is to adjust the jig to only drill partial holes. Going to the usual depth leaves a knife edge that will be crushed by the hook.

There are a number of reasons you might want to fix a nail hole without painting, and you’ve come to the right place to learn how to do just that.

You may want to make the repair to ensure you get your rental deposit back. Alternatively, you may wish to sell your home and an exhibition is coming soon. Either way, you don’t want to leave unsightly nail holes on your wall.

If you leave the nail in, it looks even worse than the hole. Accordingly, the only good option is to fill in the gaps in your otherwise beautiful wall.

Read on to learn how to fix nail holes in walls without painting them.

How to fix nail holes in walls without painting

If you’ve ever worked with drywall, you know that filling pinholes is a chore. The work is especially stressful when you have a lot of it.

Painting over every single nail hole is tedious and time-consuming. Accordingly, you may be wondering if there is a better method.

Well, there is certainly a faster way. In truth, however, the best approach is to bite the bullet and do the hard work that it takes to properly repair holes in walls. We’re about to find the right way to get the job done.

Still, that’s not why you’re here. You’re here to find a quick fix to a small but unattractive problem – and you’ll get it.

In short, you can fix nail holes with putty or putty. These connections disappear directly into pinholes.

In addition, they are easy to use. All you have to do is apply it and then let it dry for about 15 minutes. You can then wipe the area with a damp cloth.

You can also use other household items to fill the hole – more on that in a moment. However, there is a catch.

If you don’t have a white wall, your patch job will be visible. As a result, you can fill nail holes in minutes and you’re done, but only with walls painted white.

At the very least, you should get your hands on fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge. You can use the sandpaper to make damage less obvious.

It’s understandable not to want to paint after fixing a small hole. If you only need to fix a small spot or two, painting will eventually make the job a chore.

In this case, it is understandable if the job is not worthwhile. With that in mind, here are a few DIY methods that will save you some work—and a trip to the hardware store.

Fast nail hole fixations in no time

Everyone has a tube of toothpaste lying around. You can use toothpaste to fill small nail holes in your wall. It’s the fastest way to get the job done.

Toothpaste is a great quick fix when you’re in a pinch. For example, your landlord may come by in less than an hour to look around. In that case, take whatever you use to keep your teeth shiny and white.

It’s important to note that toothpaste will eventually crack as it dries. Consequently, it is not suitable for filling larger holes such as those accidentally made with a hammer. However, there is a trick that eliminates this problem.

I hope you have some aspirins lying around, too. If so, crush an aspirin or two and mix it with a small amount of toothpaste.

The mixture seals the hole and does not tear. All you have to do is apply the toothpaste to the hole, let it dry and you’re done.

Again, without painting, this quick method only works on white walls. Also, it only works with white toothpaste. When needed, it’s much easier to go to the store to buy a small tube of white toothpaste than it is to go to a hardware store.

Other quick fix alternatives

There are also other compounds you can concoct to make your own homemade putty. However, what you choose will depend on a few things.

For example, your choice will depend on how much time you have. It will also vary depending on the color of the wall and your personal taste.

For example, you can use baking soda to make your own putty. You need to mix it with white glue.

You should end up with a white, thick, pasty mixture. You would then use the concoction to fill in small nail holes.

If the hole is small enough, you can use glue yourself. You would apply the glue with a cotton swab. For example, if you have kids, you most likely have some Elmer glue laying around that they use for crafting.

When using glue it is important that it does not get onto the rest of the wall. Remember, your goal is to do less work – not more. You should also place a piece of cardboard under the glue bottle to prevent spills.

If you’re so miserable that you don’t have any of these items at home, there’s still hope. You can fill those small nail holes in walls with soap. However, soap is a last alternative.

Filling holes in walls with soap is not a permanent solution. It’s just a quick way to cover up damage to your walls when you’re pressed for time.

Here the process is straightforward. Just take the soap, slide into the damaged areas until there are no more holes, make it look nice and you’re done.

If you have the time, it pays to know the right way to get the job done. This time you can’t avoid going to the hardware store unless you already have everything you need. To properly repair wall holes you will need:

• A spatula

• A small brush

• Fine-grain sandpaper

• Color (matched to your wall)

• putty

If you want to paint, it is important to order the right color. You can choose the right color by photographing your walls in natural daylight.

Now compare your picture with your wall. If it fits well, you can use your picture to find the right color in the hardware store.

Once you have everything for the job, you can begin. You would start by placing a small amount of putty on the corner of a putty knife. Now you can slowly slide the spatula into any nail holes.

When you’re done, use the flat side of the knife to level the putty. You want to smooth the spatula over the nail hole.

Don’t worry if there is extra putty. You have sandpaper for that.

Now let the filler dry for two to three hours. Once it’s completely dry you can sand the putty with the fine grit sandpaper.

Fill larger holes in walls

If you have a larger hole, you will need to get an additional item at the hardware store. You will need a pack of self-adhesive fiberglass netting. Many hardware stores refer to this material as a drywall repair kit.

The fiberglass fabric gives your fix additional stability. Typically, when you have a hole that is half an inch or larger, you need a drywall repair kit.

For this job, you should start by cutting a piece of fiberglass mesh that extends about 1 inch in all directions around the hole. Now place the patch directly over the hole and press down after removing the backing. The patch should stick to the wall with no problems.

Now cover the mesh with putty. However, you should give the repair a little more time to dry.

For a larger hole, you should wait 5 to 6 hours – or more if you can. Now you can sand the wall smooth and apply paint.

Voila! Your wall is like new again and you have one less thing to worry about.

Small repairs can make a big difference

Now you know how to fix nail holes in walls without painting. You also learned how to fix a hole in your wall the right way – with paint.

It is important to know how much the item you are hanging on your wall weighs before choosing any method for your plaster walls. A small frame can be hung on a simple adhesive hook, but a wall sculpture or TV requires a heavy-duty hanging system.

How to prepare plaster walls for hanging things

Once you’ve determined whether your walls are plaster or drywall, it’s time to take the appropriate steps to decorate. Gypsum is much harder than drywall and also more brittle. Driving nails directly into plaster can result in deformed holes or cracks in the plaster. To avoid this, use the following system:

Find a stud in your plaster walls. Since most stud finders don’t work on cast, use this magnetic stud finder.

Mark the spot where the hole is to be drilled with masking tape. Drill through the tape and into the walls. This will prevent the drill from tearing up the plaster.

Drill the hole carefully. With certain hooks or screws, it may be beneficial to drill at a slight downward angle so that the hardware you are using acts as the hook.

If you’re using a wall mounting system that doesn’t require you to find a stud, you can skip the first step. For heavier items you will need to use a magnetic stud locator. Most standard post finders will not work on gypsum walls because the gypsum is thick and backed with wood. A magnetic stud finder identifies studs in plaster by locating the nails that hold the batten to the studs.

7 best ways to hang things on plaster walls without nails

Nails are not an ideal tool for hanging items on plaster walls. Driving a nail into plaster is not only hard work, but also risks tearing the plaster. After all the hard work, the hole in the cast is often slightly larger than the nail, resulting in a loose fit and falling decor. You can avoid all these headaches by using the following techniques.

Wood screws without dowels

When it comes time to hang an item that weighs more than 20 pounds (9 kilos), 2 1/2 inch wood screws are the best tool for the task. Use a magnetic pin finder to find solid wood in your wall. Then use tape and an electric drill to pre-drill the hole for your screw. Finally, drill the screw into the wall, leaving 1/4 inch (6mm) of the screw protruding from the wall.

Insert 2 1/2 inch wood screws into wall studs to hang decorations weighing over 20 pounds.

Pre-drill holes through the plaster and into the studs before setting the screws.

A single 2 1/2 inch wood screw inserted into a stud can hold 80-100 pounds (35-45 kilos).

Insert wood screws into multiple studs to hold extremely heavy objects.

Remember that a wood screw inserted into a stud can support 80 to 100 pounds. For large items that span multiple studs, insert a screw into each stud. With the combined strength of multiple screws, you can hang items weighing over 200 pounds.

There are many instances when you will want to hang an item that does not have a wall stud. Fear not, your trusty screws still come in handy here. You can hang decorations weighing up to 20 pounds by pre-drilling a hole in the plaster, inserting a plaster anchor, and then inserting the screw into the anchor.

Insert screws into anchors to hang items where there are no wall studs.

Anchored screws can hold up to 20 pounds (9 kilos).

Pre-drill your hole, then insert this plaster anchor followed by the screw.

Do not use self-drilling anchors on plaster walls.

Avoid self-drilling anchors on plaster. These are designed for drywall and will not pierce through plaster. For plaster walls, you will need to pre-drill a hole and insert your dowel.

When hanging items weighing 2kg or less, there is no need to drill a hole in your plasterboard wall. Just use sticky hooks.

Use these adhesive hooks to hang items under 2 kilos.

Clean the area with rubbing alcohol and a washcloth before attaching the adhesive hook.

To prepare the area before sticking the adhesive hook to the wall, clean the wall with rubbing alcohol and a cloth. This will remove dirt and grime that could affect the effectiveness of the adhesive. Once the area is prepped and dried, set your hook and hang your item.

Hook for drywall

Despite the name, drywall hooks can be used on plaster walls. These thin wire hooks work by inserting them through a small hole in the wall and bracing them from the inside. They can be used to hang items up to 20 pounds (9 kilos) where rivets are not present.

Use these drywall hooks, also known as monkey hooks, to hold decorations weighing up to 9kg.

Drywall hooks can be used in sections of the wall where there is no stud.

You will need to pre-drill a small hole in your plaster to insert the drywall hook.

When used in drywall, these hooks can often simply be pushed through the drywall by hand. You can’t do that with plaster. You need to attach a piece of tape and pre-drill a hole before inserting the hook. The good news is that only a small hole is needed.

As the name suggests, plaster hooks are specifically designed for hanging items on plaster walls. This may be a cheat on the “no nails” rule as a band-aid hook is essentially a flat hook attached to a thin nail, but these are far more effective than your everyday nail.

Plaster hooks can hold items up to 20 pounds (9 kilos).

Pre-drill an angled hole to insert the nail portion of the cast hook.

Gently tap the nail until the back of the hook is firmly against the wall.

It is important to note that plaster hooks are designed with the nail angled upwards to help it stay in a plaster wall. When pre-drilling a hole for the cast hook, drill at an angle down for the most secure installation.

Picture rails are a beautiful and classic way of hanging wall decoration. They act like a decorative strip around the ceiling of the room. Cables run down from the picture rail and hang murals or mirrors at any desired height. You can use a picture ledge to create an entire wall of artwork or family photos.

This picture rail can be used to hang multiple items on a single wall.

Because picture rails are attached to studs with wood screws, they can support hundreds of pounds.

Each hook on a picture rail can support 20-25 pounds (9-11 kilos). Since most items are held by 2 hooks, you can easily hang decorations weighing up to 22kg on a picture ledge.

Picture rails are a durable option. Attach the picture rail to the wall by driving screws through the rail and into your wall studs. This allows each picture rail to easily hang hundreds of pounds.

Toggle screws act as a heavy-duty screw and dowel system.

For many, toggle screws are much easier to install and remove than traditional screws and anchors. They are a great choice for making your plaster walls nail free.
