Not sure if it’s the same on older systems, but on ICS it seems to save directly to /data/data/com.android.settings/files/wallpaper. I set mine in the browser, dragged that file and then changed it to a .png extension and viola – it was the image I set.

It also seems that if you change your wallpaper this file is simply overwritten, so I don’t see a way to recover a file once it’s changed unless you have a copy of the image elsewhere.
