“A lot of bad apps out there actually just blur the skin instead of correcting it the way a pro can,” explained De Yonker.
Professional Photoshop experts are artists who look at the image and make sure it stays realistic even as they remove pimples or fix other rough areas. But Photoshop or image editing apps are just software, so De Yonker said they don’t consider the final appearance.
“When they retouch your skin, the colors actually blur and blend them to the point where they don’t even look like skin anymore,” De Yonker said. “It looks like you’ve been painted.”

Every time you edit your Instagram post (after you’ve posted it), Instagram resets your engagement ranking. All the likes & comments you’ve received up to that point will reset and not count anymore. If you’ve hit top posts for any location or hashtag, you’ll be taken off top posts.

Until that moment you’re really trying to show your followers some cool photos and the damn thing doesn’t work.
If you’re trying to create an Instagram Story and don’t see all the filters or options that should be there, you’re not alone. Better still, the situation is not hopeless. There are a few ways to fix the problem, including the one that worked for me. I’ll show you what I did first, and then I’ll outline some other fixes in case the first method doesn’t work for you.
What should happen is that when you tap your own icon to create a story, a bunch of filters will appear. They’re all lined up at the bottom of the screen, and each one does something different. There should be several filters to choose from, but occasionally some will disappear. We’re trying to fix that here.
Fixing Instagram filters
The first method is something we should all do from time to time: take out the trash. What fixed the missing Instagram filters for me was clearing my phone. Between apps, photos, files, and shares, I had pretty much filled all available storage. Like many other devices, my phone decided it was time to lock me down for unnecessary data and files.
I deleted all the apps I no longer needed. I force close all apps currently running in the background. I then tried Instagram again to see if the problem went away. Guess what? The correct number of filters loaded and stayed loaded even when I restarted my phone and restarted Instagram to test it.
Although this was part of the program design in my phone or Instagram, it helped free up memory and kill running apps. Whether it was a RAM issue or storage, Instagram filters would come back and lag.
Other ways to fix Instagram filters
Once you’ve taken out the junk and cleaned up the files on your phone a bit, you’ll probably feel a little better. However, this may not fix the Instagram problem. If your available storage is adequate, your Downloads folder is pristine, and you otherwise have no idea why those filters are being lost, try some of these general app fixes. They might work.
1. Restart the Instagram app
Restarting the app is always a win. If you are on the iPhone, it is enough to close it. Android users need to go to “Settings -> Apps” and “Force Stop” in Instagram to get the full effect. This will completely restart the app and fix all kinds of bugs that you may not have noticed.
2. Reboot your phone
There’s really something to the concept of “turning off and on again”. If restarting the app doesn’t work, try restarting your phone. It can free up RAM, force cache clearing and cause your phone’s OS to reload the app. It fixes most phone issues and might fix this too.
3. Clear app cache in Instagram
The app cache in Android is also a common cause of app errors. This is often the case when a single app isn’t working properly and restarting or restarting doesn’t work.
Select “Settings” and then “Apps”.
Select “Instagram” and then “Storage”.
Choose Clear Cache.
Once that’s done, the counters should return to zero, and you can try Instagram again to see if those filters popped up again.
4. Update Instagram

5. Reinstall Instagram
If nothing else works, a fresh install of Instagram might be in order. This is generally a last resort, but it may be necessary if these filters are still missing after all other suggestions have been followed. I don’t blame you if you want to wait a minute to see if things work themselves, as poor network connection or the down wifi can cause phones to do all sorts of unpredictable things.
If you decide to proceed with reinstalling Instagram, make sure you backup and uninstall all the images, stories, and anything else you have on the app.
Reboot your phone to clear it from memory, then visit Google Play Store or App Store, select Instagram and install it. Set it again and hope the filters return.

It’s really annoying, but unfortunately there’s not much you can do about it. As with all internet glitches, there is no quick fix to get your app working again.
Instagram’s tech team is probably already aware of the issue and is working to fix the app. So it should be working again in a few hours.
However, if you are impatient, below are some things that might fix your app.

Close and reopen the app.
First, try shutting down your app completely. On an iPhone, you do this by swiping up on your home screen.
Sign out of the app.

Instagram 101: Here’s How to Turn Off Instagram’s New Comment Filter
One of my favorite things about Instagram, and the reason it’s still my favorite app, is the fact that it’s not like Facebook or YouTube. After our last presidential election, well, I think we were all afraid to go anywhere near Facebook. And YouTube, I’m not sure why the comments on this platform are among the worst, but they are.
This politically driven social media giant with a capital F might own our beloved photos app, but if the two went head-to-head in some serious epic app battle… Instagram just got more flair. (Of course, that’s my opinion. If you disagree, fight back in the comments below!)
Now that stories and live videos are taking off on IG, shall we start seeing more YouTubian-esque comments full of gibberish? Not according to Instagram. The app gets an update to filter offensive comments.
So what exactly is an offensive comment? That’s up for evaluation. If Instagram flags your comment as “toxic,” it will be blocked. You can still report, delete, or disable commenting on your posts if you wish, but filtering offensive comments is no longer your job. Instagram has a new bot that does everything for you:
Today’s filters are powered by machine learning and are our latest tools for making Instagram a safe place to be. Our team has been training our systems to recognize certain types of abusive and spam comments so you never have to see them.
Spam attacks too. Instagram is currently setting up a spam filter that can detect and remove spam written in nine different languages - English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Chinese.
So no more apparel reps trying to convince you to become a brand ambassador? Maybe (hopefully) yes. The current spam and offensive comment removal algorithm is still in its infancy. The company plans to continue improving its filters to recognize more languages and maintain a friendlier IG community overall.
On the other hand, if you’re concerned about Instagram filtering out comments, then don’t worry, it’s not mandatory! You can turn off this filter. Just go to your profile page and tap the ellipsis (Android) or gear (iOS) at the top to access your options menu. Then scroll down and tap on “Comments”.
From here you can turn off the “Hide offensive comments” automatic filter. You can also enable a “manual filter” that hides specific words or phrases that you find offensive.

It’s pretty self-explanatory in nature and just builds on knowledge already known to Instagram’s entire user base. The app is literally a hub for users who enjoy touching up photos before putting them online. Literal models have made their entire careers outside of the platforms; Case and point, Lucky Blue Smith. What makes this feature even more limited in its capacity is that it appears to only be able to pin down filters applied by the app itself. Therefore, using third-party touch-up and editing tools like Snapseed means Instagram doesn’t identify the image as flashing. However, there is more to this innovation than just highlighting the use of a filter. With this, Instagram intends not only to identify the use of filters, but also to make them more accessible to users. When a person taps the text box, a pop-up appears that both identifies the filter used and asks the user if they want to try it themselves. So if a user wants to try a quick filter they just came across, they no longer have to actively search for it filter by filter. While the benefit of getting an easy way to try out trending filters is pretty nice, it could potentially be offset by community reaction to such tweaking. Calling out celebrities and other influencers for using filters to “enhance” their looks is almost a daily outing for the internet, with comments ranging from mildly chiding to disturbingly inviting body dysmorphia.
