What is a SIM card?

Remove the back cover and remove the battery. Press the SIM card with your finger and slide it out of the slot. You’ll see a tiny icon that looks like a SIM card with the letters “SIM” next to it. Reinstall the phone battery. Make sure the battery contacts line up with the pins on the inside of the device. Orient the back cover toward the camera, then press down to reattach.

It’s not removable, but the benefit is that your carrier will transfer all your account info for you if you switch phones, so you don’t have to physically transfer your SIM card. How to open SIM card slot on iPhone

The steps to open the SIM card slot on an iPhone haven’t really changed with each new version. You can find the SIM card slot by looking for a small hole on the side of your iPhone.

Once you find it, you need to use the SIM card eject tool to open the SIM card slot. This comes with every iPhone. If you don’t have this tool, use an unfolded paperclip or needle to pry open the slot instead. Make sure to use a needle though, as you don’t want to stab yourself!

To open your iPhone’s SIM card slot, push the SIM card eject tool (or a paper clip) into the small hole on the side of your iPhone. If there is enough firmness, the SIM card holder will eject – you have to pull it out completely.

Once you have opened the SIM card slot on your iPhone, place your SIM card in the card holder, put it back in the slot and slide it back in.

However, don’t press it too hard as you might break the pin. If the eject tool doesn’t eject the SIM card, it could get stuck. In this case, you will need to contact Apple (or your network provider) for further assistance.

Cleaning the tablet

SIM card trays will not eject for various reasons. In many cases, the tray is dirty and the dirt actually prevents ejection from happening normally. Take a damp cloth or even a damp cloth and clean the area around the tray. Using a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol can really get dirt out of the crevasses too.

Use a paper clip or eject tool to press the eject button and ideally the tray will work again. If that fails, turn the phone over so the tray is facing the floor and press the eject button a few times. The extra gravity can help the tray come loose.

Use sticky adhesives

Adhesives are a viable option and often very effective when removing a stuck SIM card. Do not apply real glue such as glue to the shell as it will harden and only help to permanently bond the shell and SIM card together. Use an adhesive such as double-sided tape or a tacky mounting adhesive like those used for transferring posters and pictures.

Roll up the tape or cut the mounting adhesive into a thin strip. The trick to using this technique is to only apply the glue against the splint. If the adhesive sticks to the phone area outside the shell, it will pull against the fixed surface rather than the moving part. Work over the glue until it roughly matches the shape of the spoon.

Press the adhesive against the SIM tray and hold the eject button while quickly peeling the adhesive off the tray. Ideally, this pressure is enough to pull out the tray and remove the stuck SIM card. If this doesn’t work on the first try, keep trying until the tray eventually ejects. If the tray ejects only partially and is relatively stuck, use tweezers to gently grasp and pull out the SIM card.

Note: If you ever resort to opening a SIM card tray using any of the tools listed here, do so with caution. Use your common sense and don’t hurt yourself! Also, make sure you’re plugging your phone into the correct hole, not one that has a microphone in it.

Use a paper clip, thumbtack, or pin

For those who don’t have a SIM tray ejector handy, the humble paperclip is one of the best alternatives. Just bend one of its ends and you’re good to go! However, make sure you use a paper clip thin enough to fit in the tray’s hole. Apply pressure gently so as not to completely scratch the metal.

Alternatively, a thumbtack or pin could do the job, but these are usually too thick to fit in most SIM tray holes. We’ve successfully used one with an iPhone XS, but it didn’t fit our Galaxy S9 or Google Pixel 3.

Using a Safety Pin or Needle For those who don’t have a SIM tray ejector handy, the simple paperclip is one of the best alternatives. Just bend one of its ends and you’re good to go! However, make sure you use a paper clip thin enough to fit in the tray’s hole. Apply pressure gently to avoid scratching the metal completely. Alternatively, a thumbtack or pin could do the job, but these are usually too thick to fit in most SIM tray holes. We’ve successfully used one with an iPhone XS, but it didn’t fit our Galaxy S9 or Google Pixel 3.

Safety pins and needles are an essential part of any sewing kit, and we’ve seen kits like this in hotel rooms on more than one occasion. And it’s not uncommon to find a safety pin on the label of new clothing. Just be careful when using these. You don’t want to accidentally get infected with the end of business.

With an earring

Fun Fact: I got the idea for this whole post when I saw a young lady eject her iPhone’s SIM card tray with her earring. Again, not all earrings are thin enough to fit a tray hole, but there’s no harm in trying. Just be gentle when applying pressure. You don’t want to ruin a piece of jewelry, do you?

One of the less obvious substitutes for a SIM card ejector resides in your stapler. If you gently press the head of the stapler, a single staple should come out halfway without bending its ends. Gently pull it out and use it to eject your SIM card tray.
