The app version
The easiest way to use KingoRoot is to install the app version, which literally does the rooting process with just one tap.
In fact, the only complicated part is actually getting this app on your Android device. That’s because it’s not available on the Google Play Store; Instead, you need to download the KingoRoot APK and install it manually.

Ideally, just point your device’s phone to the KingoRoot Android page and download it directly. If for some reason this doesn’t work, or you’re working from your PC, download the APK and email it to yourself as an attachment. Then on your device, open this email and download this attachment .
However, to install it, you need to make sure that your device is set to allow apps from unknown sources. Here’s how to do it on most Android versions: Go to Settings, tap Security, scroll down to Unknown Sources and toggle the switch to the on position.
Now you can install KingoRoot. Then run the app, tap One Click Root and cross your fingers. If all goes well, your device should be rooted within about 60 seconds. (On my aforementioned Galaxy S6, the process hit 90 percent, then the phone crashed and restarted. Thankfully, no harm done.)
The desktop version
Kingo’s support pages suggested that I might have better luck with the Galaxy S6 if I tried the Windows version of KingoRoot. Here is that process:

Step 1: Download and install KingoRoot for Windows. Ensure that the “Install Yahoo powered Chromium browser” option remains unchecked, and then click Decline to prevent further adware intrusion.
Step 2: Enable USB debugging mode on your phone. If running Android 4.0 or 4.1, tap Settings, Developer Options and check the box for USB Debugging. (You may need to turn “Developer Options” to “On” before you can do this.) On Android 4.2, tap “Settings”, “About phone”, “Developer options” and then turn on “USB debugging”. Then tap “OK” to confirm the setting change.

On Android 4.3+ (including 5.0, although some 4.2 versions do the same), tap Settings, About phone, then scroll down to Build number. Tap it seven times. At this point, you should see the message “You are now a developer!”
Then tap Settings, About phone, Developer options, and then enable USB debugging.” Then tap OK to confirm the setting change.
Step 3: Run Android Root on your PC and then connect your phone using the USB sync cable. After a moment, the former should show a connection to the latter. You may see the message “Allow USB debugging?” on your device screen. pop up. Turn on Always allow from this computer, then tap OK.

Step 4: Click Root, then sit back and wait while the utility does its job. After a few minutes, my Galaxy S6 hit 70 percent, and then the phone crashed and restarted again. Again, your mileage can (and most likely will) vary.
And that’s all there is to it. If you decide to reverse the process, simply run Android Root again, connect your phone, and then click Unroot. (The same is more or less true for the app version.)

As part of rooting, install a management client like Magisk – SuperSU used to be the best option but has fallen into disuse. These tools are basically the gatekeeper of root access on your phone. When an app requests root, you need to approve it using the root manager.
In the case of Magisk, you can also use the client to make other modifications to the phone via numerous community-developed modules. Suppose you don’t like the system design on your phone. If you’ve ever looked at your phone and thought, “I wish I could do [something very specific],” rooting might cause it. Over time, these features have been incorporated into the standard Android feature set, making root less useful for casual phone enthusiasts. Modern tools like Magisk are also “systemless” root managers. This means that the changes are saved in the boot partition instead of modifying the system. That makes it easier to go back to an unrooted system (or make apps think you’re not rooted) than it used to be.
The Risks of Rooting
Rooting your phone or tablet gives you complete control over the system, but rooting comes with risks and you should only do it if you know what you’re getting into. Android is designed in such a way that it is difficult to destroy things with a restricted user profile. However, a superuser can really ruin the system by installing the wrong app or making changes to system files. Android’s security model is also compromised if you have root. Some malware specifically looks for root access, which allows it to really run amok.
Because of this, most Android phones are not designed to be rooted. There’s even an API called SafetyNet that apps can call to ensure a device hasn’t been tampered with or compromised by hackers. Banking apps, Google Pay and others that handle sensitive data pass this check and refuse to run on rooted devices. Magisk supports root hiding, but that won’t always work. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse with Google. If losing access to high-security apps is a big deal, you might not want to mess with root.
Root methods are sometimes messy and dangerous on their own. You could brick your device simply by trying to root it, and you’ve probably (technically) voided your warranty by doing so. Rooting also makes it harder (or impossible) to install official updates, and ROMs like Lineage can be difficult to install and buggy once you do. If root access is really important to you, you may have to wait for buggy software while asking for a new rooting method or modified operating system update.
Should you do it?
If you’ve been using Android for a while, you’ve probably noticed that getting root access is a lot harder on most devices than it used to be. Years ago there were exploits that could root almost any Android device in minutes, but that’s much rarer today. The last essentially universal exploit was Towelroot in mid-2014, but Google patched that pretty quickly. Google often fixes these bugs before we even know they exist, as having active exploits in the system is a very bad thing for most users. These are vulnerabilities that malware can use to take over a device and steal data. There are monthly security updates to fill in these gaps, but on a rooted phone, security is your responsibility. If you want to root, you have to accept that your device requires more frequent attention – the safety net offered by Google and the device manufacturer will not save you.
Unless you’re familiar with Android’s tools and how to troubleshoot problems using a command line, you probably shouldn’t delve into rooting your phone. Root can be a lot of fun to play around with, but it can also lead to a lot of frustration trying to fix bugs caused by overzealous modding. If you bought your phone with the intention of tinkering, you will definitely go crazy.
When something goes wrong (and it will eventually), it’s up to you to fix it. You may need to sift through old forum posts and ask for help in chat rooms to fix your phone. You have to be willing to tackle some annoying problems if you want to live the rooted lifestyle. You also need to look at what you’re getting; Android is much better than it used to be as it is.
