First things first – what is Instagram Direct? Or in this case an Instagram DM (direct message).

What is a DM on Instagram?

First things first – let’s define DM. In this case, DM stands for Direct Message – or a message sent privately to one (or a few) people.

Now that we have the DM definition, we can dive a little deeper into messaging on Instagram and why the feature was introduced.

Instagram Direct is Instagram’s private messaging feature. Kevin Systrom, founder of Instagram, announced this at a press event in New York on December 12, 2013. This was an exciting moment for the photo-sharing platform as it was the first to explore one-to-one messaging on another public platform.

The above video accompanied Systrom’s announcement and briefly touched on the main features of the new feature.

Interestingly, this announcement came shortly after Instagram was acquired by Facebook, a platform that launched its private messenger back in 2008.

In 2013 personal social media messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger continued to dominate (the latter already boasting almost 200 million monthly active users). More importantly, Snapchat, the multimedia messaging app, quickly rose to prominence. Introducing a direct messaging feature was a smart (and maybe even essential) move by Instagram.

Through Instagram Direct, users can send photos or videos they take (or upload from their phone’s photo library), posts they’ve seen in the feed, disappearing photos and videos (think Snapchat), other users’ Instagram stories, Hashtags and location pages.

Instagram also recently added a green dot next to an Instagram user’s profile picture to show when they’re logged into Instagram and available to chat.

How to send a picture, video or chat in a direct message

Have you ever taken a picture and immediately thought of a friend who just had to see it? Or maybe you bumped into an old college friend while running errands and want to reach them, but forgot to exchange phone numbers.

Whatever your argument, sending a chat, picture, or video via Instagram DM can be a great way to reach people!

Luckily, this is an easy process that consists of just a few steps.

1. Open Instagram and log into your account

That first step is easy — and if you’re anything like me, something you already do every day. Grab your phone, open your Instagram app and log into your account. As a heads up, our instructions and screenshots are for sending an Instagram DM from an iPhone. However, the process should look similar (if not identical) on Android devices.

2. Tap the paper airplane button in the top right corner or swipe left from anywhere in the feed

Tapping the paper airplane button or swiping left will take you to the screen where you send your DM. If you already have conversations (or if you’ve been DMed before), they’ll appear on this screen.

3. Tap the plus sign in the top right corner

To send a new message, tap the plus sign in the top right corner. This will take you to the screen where you select the person (or people) you want to send the message to.

4. Select your recipient(s).

Instagram will display a list of suggested accounts that you may want to send your Direct Message to. If you don’t see your intended recipient, use the search bar at the top of the screen to find them by searching for either their username or their full name. When you have selected your recipient, click on “Next” in the upper right corner.

To capture a picture or video to send:

To take a new picture or video to send, tap the camera button to the left of the chat box. If you’ve posted an Instagram story before, this screen should look familiar! You can snap a photo or video as usual, or use some of Instagram’s fun features like boomerangs, filters, and more.

Once you’ve captured your picture, you have a few options for how it will appear to your recipient. At this point you can choose between:

Make the photo or video appear or play once and then disappear (like the first version of Snapchat)

Allow the photo or video to appear or play once, but then allow your recipient to repeat (like Snapchat’s current functionality).

How to send a post from your Instagram feed in a direct message

Now that Instagram is littered with meme accounts (I’m not complaining), it’s pretty common that you see something in your feed that makes you laugh. And what could be nicer than laughing alone? Laugh with friends, of course!

Luckily, Instagram makes it easy to send posts to your friends and followers straight from the feed. The original poster will not know that you sent their Instagram post, nor will the messages appear in the Instagram feed, in search, or on your profile.

However, remember that if the original author has a private Instagram profile, your recipient will not be able to see the post unless they follow the account that posted it. If the original poster has a public Instagram profile, you’re good to go!

Here’s how to send a post directly from your Instagram feed. We’re skipping the steps that involve opening Instagram and logging in – if you’ve found something you want to share, we’re assuming you’ve already done so!

If you tap the paper airplane image below the image you want to share, Instagram will bring up a list of your existing conversations. If you don’t see your intended recipients, simply use the search bar to find their account and select their Instagram handle from the list.

2. Add an optional message or send without one

After choosing your recipient, you can enter a message that will be sent along with the post. Consider adding a message that provides more context to the image or explains why the post reminded you of that specific person. Instagram DMs are a great way to connect with friends and family, so take the opportunity to add a personalized message!

Note: If your recipient can’t see the post, they don’t need to follow the account! Just take a screenshot on your Android or iPhone and send the screenshot via DM with the first guide.

The Spotify & Apple Music Apps

One way to get your music on Instagram Stories is to share your music directly through the Spotify app on your phone. When you share from it, your story will display your cover art or “canvas”, your song title and artist name, along with a link that will appear under your username for fans to click and take them to your track on Spotify. Unfortunately, using the Spotify app doesn’t offer a way to play your music during your story.

The same goes for the Apple Music app. When you share content in your story, your cover art, song title, and artist name will appear, along with a link that will appear below your username for fans to click and take them to your track on Spotify. Unfortunately, using the Apple app doesn’t offer a way to play your music during your story (deja vu)!

Getting your music into your Instagram Stories and Reels can be as simple as playing it in the background. Open Spotify or Apple Music and play your song through your phone’s speakers. Go back to the Instagram app, swipe on the story and start recording. The microphone picks up the song you are playing in the background. You can add text to let people know the name of the song and where to find it. This is a quick and easy trick to getting your music heard.

Preprocessed videos

You can also use apps like iMovie to create an Instagram Story or Reel video. You can use a still image or moving video and drag your music to the background of the video. You can also use the text options in iMovie or in Instagram Stories itself. You need to export the video as .mp4, then AirDrop or send it to your phone and save to your camera roll.

Once saved to your camera roll, open the Instagram app, swipe to Stories and click the small icon at the bottom left to open your camera roll. Click on the video and it will open in Instagram Stories for you to post.

“Add Music” app

There’s an app for iPhones called Add Music – which we often use to add music to social media videos. This one costs $2.99 ​​per week but is extremely easy to use.

Under “Start a new project,” click the big orange “+” button.

Then select the video you want to add your music to. A screen will appear where you can select your music. You can either record a voiceover or click My Music to open your Apple Music Library.

You can choose a song based on different categories – like the Apple Music library always offers. Playlists, Artists, Albums, Songs, Genres, etc.

Once you’ve selected your music, your project will open. To edit, click on the blue track. You can trim it, change the start time, add fade in/out and even create the music loop. Once you’ve done that, click save and save it to your camera roll to use in your Instagram Story or Reel!

There are many different video editing apps that you can use to add music (e.g. VideoShop), this is just our favorite. It’s very easy to use and you can even AirDrop from your phone directly to another device in the app before having to save it to your camera roll.

Using your music in Instagram Stories and Reels

Now that you know how to get your music into Instagram’s in-app library, let’s talk about how to use it.

After opening Instagram Stories or Reels and taking a photo or video (or uploading one from your camera roll), swipe up. You will see the display of stickers that Instagram offers for its stories. Click the Music sticker.

Next, start searching for your music in the search bar. Click on the song you are looking for and it will open as an overlay in your story or reel. Tap on the sticker itself to change it. There are multiple options – some are cover art/song title display options and others are font options for the lyrics (our favorite option)!

Note: There were many issues with the global launch of the music sticker on Instagram in 2021. Business accounts may only be able to access a small amount of royalty-free music (this comes from Facebook’s sound library). The good news is that there is an easy fix for this! Switch your account from a business account to a creator account and BOOM, problem solved! (Plus, you still get things like insights, so there’s not much of a difference).

Instagram offers a selection of music from its own audio library. You can access this library through the app itself. If you want to add custom music to your Instagram story, you can do it with an online video editor. Here’s everything you need to know about music and Instagram.

There are two ways you can add music to your Instagram Stories.

(a) How to add music to Instagram stories with Instagram app?

Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: You can record the video on Instagram yourself or just upload one from your camera roll. In any case, first launch the Instagram app and click on the “Your Story” icon in the top left corner of your app.

Step 2: You can either select a video from your camera roll by clicking the browse icon in the bottom left corner of your screen, or an easier way to access it is by swiping up and you can now Select the file from your camera roll.

If you want to record your Instagram Stories through the app, just continuously press the shutter button to record it.

Step 3: Now that you have the video that you want to upload, it’s time to add music. You can turn off the video’s original sound if needed by clicking the Sound icon in the top menu. Then click on the “Media” icon (square smiley face) which will be used to add GIFs and Emojis to your Instagram stories.

Step 4: Here you will find an option labeled “Music” – tap on it.

Step 5: You can search for a specific music track (based on name, mood, genre) or you can find the most popular music tracks listed and you can choose from them. Select the desired music track. You can also click the play button to preview before making your final choice.

Step 6: Since only 15-second videos are allowed in Instagram stories, music tracks will be automatically adjusted to fit your video.

Note: Once you’ve selected your music track, it will appear as a sticker in your story. You can customize how your sticker will look in your story by tapping it to reveal the display options. You can adjust its size by dragging and squeezing it like you would any other media element.

Step 7: If you want a specific part of the music track, you can just tap on the sticker and scroll up and down to the relevant text you need. You can also drag the timeline bar to change the music to another verse. The two pink lines on the timeline mark the portion auto-adjusted by Instagram.

Step 8: You can also view the lyrics on your Instagram Stories and choose from different font options with the “A” icon. When you’re done with your edit, just tap Done and upload your story to Instagram.

Note that no matter which option you use to edit your music, you will see a sticker or equivalent text on your Instagram story.

(b) How do I add my own music to an Instagram story?

While the Instagram app is the easiest way to add music when sharing Stories on the go, it’s not the ideal way for a business or brand. Instead, you want to share a well-planned creative that’s professionally tuned to the music for the best user experience.

For example, this is a great Instagram Stories template for a fashion brand or blogger to showcase their outfits and style. The visuals go well with the upbeat and fun background music.

If you’re creating a reel on a trending trend, it’s a good idea to use the Instagram app to add the original music source for wider reach. This will get your content discovered on the explore page for that trend.

Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to adding music to your Instagram reels:

Step 1 You can rotate your video on Instagram yourself or just upload a video to the app. Once you’re done with your video, it’s time to upload it to Instagram. To do this, launch the Instagram app. Go to the Your Story icon in the top left corner of the app, then navigate to Reels.

Step 2: Tap the “Browse” icon on the bottom left of your screen or just swipe up to upload your video. After uploading, you should see your video on the screen. If you don’t see it, just tap the “Preview” button to do so.

Step 3: Now tap on the “Music” icon on the top menu on your screen.

Step 4: If your video already has sound, you will see a screen with 2 audio sources. You can reduce the camera sound as needed. Then tap the “Add Music” icon on the right side of the screen to add a song or music to your Instagram Reel.

Step 5: Find and select the song you want to add to your reel. Instagram shows the latest songs trending on reels and you can tap the play button to preview the song.

Step 6: Tap the screen and scroll through the lyrics so you can customize your music to fit your role. You can also toggle the bar at the bottom of the screen to edit your music. You can also switch to another verse of the song super fast by dragging and adjusting the timeline.

Step 7: If you want to change your music: just click the “Delete” icon and then add a new song by following the above steps. When you’re done customizing your music, tap Done.

Step 8: The audio controls will reappear – simply drag the controls up or down to increase or decrease the audio of the video and music. Adjust the original sound in your video as well as the sound of the added music or song so that they don’t clash. You can also tap “Edit” to edit the music.

Step 9: When you’re done with the edits, just tap “Next” and share your video on Instagram Reels.

(b) How do I add my own music to Instagram Reels?

While adding music to Reels in the app is extremely easy, timing your scenes and videos to the music can be very tricky. It’s very difficult to match your video to the beats of the music and there are very few editing options in the app. Also, the Instagram app doesn’t allow you to upload your own tracks and add them to your reels.

How to add music to your Instagram Story

To add music to an Instagram Story, tap the square smiley face icon in the top right and select the music sticker from the pop-up menu. Select a song by searching the list and customize it using the buttons that appear at the bottom of your story.

Here’s a full step-by-step breakdown.

1. Open the Instagram app on your iOS or Android device.

2. From your feed home screen, swipe left to open the Stories feature. Alternatively, tap the plus sign “+” on your profile picture in the top left corner to create a new story.

3. Take or select the photo or video you want to post to your Instagram Story.

4. From the menu bar at the top of your screen, tap the square smiley face icon that looks like a peeled post-it.

5. On the pop-up, tap on the “Music” option. Then, in the search box that appears, type a song or scroll through the options listed.

6. Tap the song you want to record when it appears in the list.

7. Drag the small bar at the bottom of the screen to the segment of the song you want in your story.

How to add music to an Instagram story if you don’t have a music sticker

1. Open a music streaming app like Spotify or Apple Music on your device.

2. Start playing the song you want to use.

3. While the song is still playing, go back to Instagram and record your story; The music playing on your phone will be integrated. However, you cannot add dynamic album art or live lyrics.

Note: When you add music this way, Instagram will check your story for copyright infringement and remove audio from your video if it detects it.

If you don’t have the music sticker on Instagram, it may be because:

You live in a country where the feature is not available. Music is enabled in the app in over 90 countries, but due to Instagram’s strict adherence to copyright law, it’s disabled in some countries.
