How To Bypass A Kill Switch On A Boat

Driving a boat is truly one of the most exciting skills you can learn. On the other hand, owning a boat can be as frustrating as it is awesome. Perhaps your feelings are now skewed towards frustration as you turn the key to start the engine to no avail. Your friends are saying it could be the kill switch loop, but you’re not sure how to check.

Let’s take a look at how kill switches work, why they’re important, and how to bypass them in the following ways:

Using a temporary plug Removing the kill switch from the circuit Disconnecting the kill switch from the engine Using a remote starter to bypass the kill switch.

Before I go any further, I must stress that there are really only two reasons you would need to bypass a kill switch. The first is to find faults and determine if your kill switch needs replacing, and the second is to get you home if your kill switch breaks. You should never go to sea without a working kill switch.

How a kill switch works

When your outboard motor is running, there is a magnetic probe that is “triggered” by the rotation of the flywheel. This trigger sends a signal telling your system that the spark plugs are ready to receive a charge, and then they use that charge to ignite the fuel on the next cycle.

The kill switch breaks this loop by grounding the electrical current before sending it to the spark plugs. Kill switches are basically spring loaded circuit breakers. If the lanyard is not attached, the circuit is closed and power is grounded.

However, with the lanyard/plug in place, the spring is contracted and the circuit is open, allowing current to flow directly to the spark plugs as needed to keep them firing.

Why are kill switches important?

In the event the skipper falls overboard, a working kill switch shuts down the engine and, as the obvious consequence, the ship stops (drift and momentum aside). This not only saves you from being mortally wounded by your boat, but also gives you a much-needed opportunity to get back on board.

It’s also worth noting that kill switches are not only a good idea, but are required by law in several countries. For example, the US requires kill switches to be fitted on all vessels under 26 feet in length. So make sure your local regulations are followed and avoid those nasty fines.

Methods of bypassing a kill switch

There are three methods of overriding the kill switch on a boat engine.

Method 1: Design a New Lanyard & Connector

One way to bypass your kill switch is to makeshift build a new plug. For example, if you lost your lanyard and connectors and need to keep the engine running, you would use this method.

Step 1: Make sure your kill switch is working

The first thing you should do is make sure your kill switch is in working order. First pull out the kill switch pin with pliers, hold it in place and see if the engine starts.

If you have a kill switch that uses a recessed pin, use an object such as a pencil. B. a screwdriver to push the pin down and start the engine.

Step 2: Make a Makeshift Connector

Now that you’re sure the switch is working properly, you can make a connector. Try to pull the pin out with your pliers and fix it with a zip tie.

The steps below are generalized and I suggest you carefully review your ship’s schematic before doing anything. If you are unsure about what you are doing, it is best to get professional help.

Step 1: Locate the kill switch

Now I’m not trying to sound silly, you obviously know where your kill button is, but you need to find it from the back. So first check which hatch gives you the best access to your console area, then locate your kill switch.

In tight spaces this can take quite a bit of squirming, so beware the claustrophobia if you’re like me.

Step 2: Remove the kill switch

While this step is optional, it could make your life a lot easier if you’re actually just removing the kill button from the console. Unless you’re content with lending in and out of that hatch space while trying to start your engines hoping you removed the correct cable.

Step 3: Check the Kill Switch wiring

There can be some differences between the different types of kill switch, but generally there should be one wire going into the kill switch (often this wire is white) and one wire going to ground (often this wire is black).

Sometimes you can find several of these wires for different motors. In other words, with certain emergency stop switches, each motor is wired individually.

Step 4: Disconnect the Kill Switch

Once you have the correct wire, disconnect the white (or equivalent) wire.

Step 5: Start the engine or change the wires

With the cable disconnected, try to start the engine. Once you have removed the correct wire and the kill switch issue, your engine should start.

If it doesn’t, try swapping the wires and removing the others. If the engine still won’t start, the problem lies elsewhere.

Method 3: Bypass the emergency stop button on the engine

If you don’t feel like digging around in your console electronics or removing the kill switch, you always have the option to disconnect the switch on the motor. However, I should mention that this is probably more risky and cutting the wrong cable on your motor will obviously have dire consequences.
