1 – How to study the Bible
The background to Watchman Nee’s statement
Beginning in the early 1800’s, God placed in the hearts of many Western Christians a call to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in China. At great cost, these missionaries dedicated themselves to preaching the gospel in a place where it had never been before. As a result, people were slowly but surely being brought to Christ the Redeemer who had never heard the name of Jesus before.
Then, in 1900, during the violence and turmoil of the Boxer Rebellion, Chinese believers were persecuted and martyred. Many missionaries were also killed. After such sacrifices and losses, Western Christians persevered in their burden to China and continued to offer fervent prayers for its people.
In the 1920’s the Lord answered these prayers and began to call young people in China to Himself. The gospel reached educated circles and many college students were brought unto Christ. A hundred years of missionary work and sacrifice, followed by years of desperate prayer, had paved the way for the Lord to bring up a generation of young Chinese Christians. From that generation the Mr. Watchman cried Nee.
Witness Lee’s early life
Witness Lee was born in northern China in 1905 into a Christian family. His mother made a great financial sacrifice so that he could attend a Chinese Southern Baptist school and later Presbyterian English Mission College. However, although he received an excellent education, he was not saved at the time.
After one of Lee’s sisters experienced salvation through Jesus Christ, she began praying for her brother and bringing him to church meetings in her hometown of Chefoo. At one such meeting, the preaching of the gospel by a sister in the Lord touched Lee deeply, and at the age of 19 he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Previously, Lee had high ambitions for his future. But upon his salvation he dedicated himself to serve the Lord throughout his life. From the beginning of his Christian life, Lee loved the Bible and became a serious student of God’s Word. He read and collected Bible exhibitions and also read other Christian writings.
Lee was particularly helped in matters of the divine life through Watchman Nee’s articles and books, and began corresponding with him on the Bible. At the same time he began meeting with the Brethren congregation at Chefoo to learn from their exposition of Bible truths; he stayed with them for seven and a half years.
