Hats tend to get quite dirty if not cleaned often. So if you’re wondering how to wash a hat, wonder no more. It is actually quite simple. It’s actually quite easy to figure out how to remove sweat stains from hats. The most common hats that need washing are baseball caps, which range from newer hats made from cotton twill — which is super durable and holds its color well — to wool caps and commemorative caps. Wool hats must be hand washed with cold water and a mild detergent. Baseball caps made of cotton twill or a similar material are usually machine washable, as long as they don’t have a cardboard or paper-filled visor. Other types of hats that may need washing are knit hats and straw hats, especially those worn outdoors to keep the sun off your face. Knit hats usually need to be hand washed, although you can wash them in a laundry bag if you can’t bear the thought of hand washing yours. Straw sun hats are the easiest to clean – just spray them down with a hose and let them air dry. Any type of structured hat should be spot cleaned if possible to prevent it from losing its shape. If you hand wash a hat, fill the sink with cold water and add a few drops of good quality detergent. Slosh the liquid enough to create foam before placing the hat in the sink. For knit hats, gently submerge and dip a few times to ensure the water flows through the hat. Rinse clean, very gently wring out excess water with your hands, roll the hat in a towel to get any remaining moisture out, then lay flat to dry. If it’s a shaped hat, stuff it with plastic bags to help it hold its shape. Pretreat particularly dirty areas (like the sweatband, if applicable) with a solvent-based spray or heavy-duty detergent. Wash the cap in cold water on a gentle cycle. DO NOT put the hat in the dryer. Instead, let them air dry. But how do you wash hats in the washing machine without losing their shape? You can purchase a cap washer or similar product to help the cap hold its shape in the washing machine. You can also air dry it over a large coffee can or similar item.

After a few years of heavy use, my dirty baseball caps have been known to just go in the trash instead of being washed. I had tried the folklore-style top rack route, but it had never given me great results. The hats came out misshapen, seemingly discolored and only partially cleaned.

But I did some digging and discovered a far better and gentler way to clean that old ball cap that will freshen it up, brighten it and add years to its life. And best of all, it’s largely hands-free.

Lucky for you readers, I had some very gross hats to run some tests on. Let’s dive in.

A high-efficiency washing machine without a central agitation column may be fine, but even then it has to be cool water on the gentlest cycle, and you also have to worry about other clothes in the load crushing the hat’s shape. The best way to wash a baseball cap

1. Fill a clean sink or bucket with warm water. Err on the side of cool versus hot.

2. Add a tablespoon of detergent or OxiClean when filling. Dish soap can do in a pinch, but laundry detergent or a special stain-fighting treatment like OxiClean is stronger and will work harder to remove the stains from the fibers of the hat.

3. Spot clean the hat first if necessary. If there are areas that are particularly problematic, spot clean them with a dab of detergent directly on the cap. After first submerging the hat in the water in your bucket or sink, use a toothbrush or other small scrubbing brush to rub the cleaner into the fabric. I saw a tip to use shampoo on sweat stains; I tried it on one of my hats and the results were pretty spectacular. The bill was free of sweat stains, while the back (where I didn’t use shampoo) remained pretty gross after cleaning:

A note here: be extra careful with thread stitching. If you are too vigorous, the seams may become misaligned and the artwork may be damaged.

4. Let the hat soak for up to a few hours. After stain washing, let the hat soak in whatever bucket or sink you filled with soapy water for up to a couple of hours, although I’ve found even as little as 20-30 minutes will get the job done. Halfway through the soak, take a look at the cap and see what the stains look like. Although the wetted fabric will hide some stains, they will still show through if they are bad. Use your little mop, spot wash those stubborn problem areas again, and again be careful with embroidered patterns and logos.

5. Rinse off all soap with warm water. Rinse the hat well before letting it dry.

6. Pat with a towel to get rid of excess moisture. The hat will of course be very wet when you take it out of the water; Drain off some of the excess, then towel dry as best you can while maintaining the shape of the hat and being gentle with logos. Your goal here is simply to get rid of the excess so it can dry on a counter without water dripping all over the place.

7. Always air dry on some sort of container. You want to find a way to dry the hat so it’s not just crumpled up on the counter. Find a coffee pot, a canister, a rolled up towel, or maybe any mannequin heads you have lying around to put on. This will ensure that the hat retains its shape and does not wrinkle. Also throw a towel under the bin; No matter how much you pat, I’ve found there will always be some dripping. If you want to speed things up, use a small fan to blow air over it, or a blow dryer on low.

Tips for cleaning wool hats

Wool hats are slightly more delicate than traditional cotton or mesh hats. The discontinued AoM cap (if you have one, keep it, it’s a vintage collectible now!) For example, it’s made of wool and just needs a little extra care to clean. Instead of standard detergents or cleaners, find something made specifically for wool and soak it as above.

Be sure to be extra gentle when scrubbing; If you are too coarse, the wool can become matted and resemble felt. You do not want that.

Finally, as you dry the hat, pat it dry to remove excess moisture, then consider actually wearing it to dry the rest of the way. It will probably be a bit uncomfortable, but the shape will fit your head snugly, not just any coffee bean container. Wool hats are notorious for losing their shape after washing, so take extra care.

Tips for cleaning older hats

If your hat is over 20 years old, there’s a good chance it’s made from different, less durable materials than today’s hats, both in the visor and cap. Believe it or not, banknotes used to be made out of cardboard rather than today’s more forgiving plastics.

The first thing to do when cleaning an old cap is color test it. The vast majority of hats today are colorfast, meaning they have a blend that helps them hold their color with washes. However, old caps do not always have this. To test, rub a small amount of cleaner onto the bottom of the bill with a rag. If the rag does get some color off, all you have to do is use water to clean the cap and just do the best you can. If the rag comes off clean, you can use detergent.

As for the actual washing, only clean stains, especially if you are unsure about the billing material. Soaking an old cardboard bill in water will obviously ruin it. And old hats are just generally less durable than today’s. Use a small scrubbing brush and hand clean any problem areas.

The judgment

My hats came out much cleaner after this hand washing method. I tested various methods including not washing the middle black and white cap. The stains are still visible on the bill, and the white isn’t as white as the freshly cleaned “playoffs” baseball cap to the left. The OxiClean really brightened the colors. You will also notice on this playoffs cap that the bill stains are almost completely gone. They’re still faintly visible, but it’s a lot better than before.

The gray cap on the right is a lot better too, although as you saw above the back is still a bit gross because I didn’t stain it. Lesson: spot cleaning is a must for particularly troublesome areas.

When your favorite baseball cap gets dirty from a few too many summer sweats, hand wash it thoroughly and you can take it to many extra innings.

Tony Finau, fresh off his 3M Open win last week, spoke to GolfWRX at Rocket Mortgage about his golf ball markings.

Its unique markings are twofold:

The five-line markers on the side help Finau with aiming, alignment and shot feedback. He marks the front of the golf ball with the initials of one of his five children.

But how does Finau decide which child to portray on his golf ball? His explanation is hilarious.

“I start with one (kid) and see how they do,” Finau told GolfWRX at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Tuesday. “If they don’t do well, I just swap them out. I’m pretty forgiving, I’ll give them some time, but right out of the gate if it’s lip-out and lip-out in a couple of holes, it’s next.

“The good thing is that I have five children, so usually at least one of them works.”

Webb Simpson goes back to the classics

Simpson was in our equipment news in May thanks to his switch to Titleist T100 irons. The switch was notable as Simpson has always favored blade irons throughout his career, but the T100’s are cavity backs.

Well, the switch didn’t seem to be a long-term one, as Simpson had swapped out the T100 irons for his old Titleist 680 Forged MB irons, first introduced to the public in 2003. He told GolfWRX he made the switch just weeks after the 2022 PGA Championship because the T100s were just too hot.

Rickie Fowler uses his putter “Tiger Woods”.

After timeouting his classic putter and a year of constant experimentation, Fowler has returned to his Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS prototype putter.

He switched back to the putter at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open, but we caught up with Fowler in Detroit this week to find out why.

“I just completed his course (with the previous putters) and I’m ready to get back to the familiar,” Fowler told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday. “I mean, I’ve done it my entire career, have something for a while, then go back to something else, change it.

“She might have needed a little time off, but hopefully she’ll warm up.”

Fowler first used the putter in 2014 and what makes the putter so special is that it actually comes from a stock of German Stainless Steel (GSS) putters that were saved for Tiger Woods. Yes, that means Fowler’s Scotty Cameron putter was made for Tiger, but with the proper credentials, Fowler was able to borrow one. Eight years later, it’s still in the game.

Also a quick moment of appreciation for GolfWRX photographer Greg Moore. The fact that he hand-held photos of Fowler’s original putter in 2014 and again in 2022 is a testament to how long he’s been providing GolfWRX with the best WITB photos on the web.

Geoff Ogilvy, a putter update

When I saw Geoff Ogilvy’s name on the field list for the 2022 Rocket mortgage, I couldn’t wait to see which putter he had in his pocket. Ogilvy “scratches the itch” by playing golf twice in the past three weeks after a four-year hiatus.

However, GolfWRX hasn’t caught Ogilvy in four years, and we’ve always known he has a great putter. He didn’t disappoint.

OK, so maybe it’s not as cool as his rusted Scotty Cameron he used back then…

On Tuesday, Theegala, who is usually a blade putter user, was on the practice greens hitting putts on it with a custom Ping PLD mallet putter with five different alignment lines.

“Hmm, that’s weird,” I thought to myself.

As it turns out, it’s actually pretty weird for him. Theegala told me Tuesday that he’s only used a mallet putter for two rounds in his life, and both rounds came at last year’s Korn Ferry Tour finals.

Although he wasn’t positive about the switch, he called it more of a 1-2 week experiment. We’ll have to keep an eye on Theegala over the next few weeks to see what he decides in the end.
