Google Chrome 54 for Android introduces new features to play background videos in the web browser when playing HTML5 video elements in it.

If you use Chrome on Android, you may have noticed that the browser automatically stops playing videos when you switch to another application, open a browser tab, or lock the device.

While this is desirable at times, at other times it can irritate you. You might want to turn off the display to save battery while the video, maybe a music video or playlist, continues to play in the background.

This wasn’t previously possible, but will change with the release of Chrome 54 for Android.

If you use Chrome on Android, you may have noticed that the browser automatically stops playing videos when you switch to another application, open a browser tab, or lock the device.

While this is desirable at times, at other times it can irritate you. You might want to turn off the display to save battery while the video, maybe a music video or playlist, continues to play in the background.

This wasn’t previously possible, but will change with the release of Chrome 54 for Android.

The browser is currently available in the beta channel. If you’re running Chrome beta on Android, you can start using the new feature right away.
