How To Wear A Fedora With Short Hair? The 128 Correct Answer

If you’ve ever cut your hair from long to short, you know there are certain adjustments that need to be made. I cut my hair from a shoulder-length bob to a pixie cut more than five years ago, and while I knew straight away that short hair was for me, I still had to make a few adjustments, including how to wear a hat sluggish. I’ve changed my clothes (for a while I dressed much more femininely, although I’m in a comfortable middle ground now). I’ve changed the way I wear makeup and decided to have more fun with color and eyeliner than I have in the past. It also took me time to figure out how to style my pixie cut properly.

However, as I mentioned, the hardest customization of all was figuring out how to wear hats. It sounds silly, but I always thought I didn’t look good in hats anymore. Then the winter weather hit and it wasn’t so much a style choice anymore as it was a necessity. Luckily now I’m wearing all kinds of hats again. It just took time for my brain to adjust to how I look now wearing hats, as well as using some tricks I picked up along the way for making hats look flattering with my short hair.

Here are the top 5 tips I can give to other short haired girls trying to figure out how to make their pixie cut work under a hat:

1. Position the knitted hats correctly.

The key to wearing knit hats with short hair is to position the hat correctly on your head. You don’t want to drag it right onto your head and cover your forehead; Instead, pull it diagonally towards the back of your head, as seen above.

As you can see, my ears and most of my head are covered, but the hat doesn’t take up my face. Also, it’s not pulled all the way up, so the hat gets a little saggy at the back.

2. Let some of your hair peek out.

This is not how you wear your knit hat.

See how it’s pulled across my forehead and sticking right up to the sky? Does not look good; I look like a conehead. Plus, if you have short hair like I do, it allows the hat to completely swallow up my pixie cut, making it look like I have no hair at all, which isn’t the look I’m going for personally .

3. Experiment with different types of hats.

Sometimes when you go from long hair to short hair you have to re-evaluate what looks good on you. There are many hats that I feel I can’t pull off, like baseball caps or cloche hats. On the other hand, many women with short hair have told me that they love wearing these types of hats. I used to think wearing a fedora would have felt silly, but now I kind of feel like Jean Seberg in Breathless.

So try on lots of different hats — yes, even fedoras — and keep an open mind.

4. Wide brimmed hats are the best no matter how short your hair is.

Wide brimmed floppy hats are great for two reasons: they add a touch of glamor to everyday outfits and they protect your face from the sun. If you can get one in black or brown (or even burgundy or forest green), you can wear it with almost any outfit year-round.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing sunscreen, but it will help protect you from the sun and keep you looking well-groomed.

5. Add lipstick.

Although fedoras were popular with gangsters and entertainers in the 1920s, they have not always maintained a solid reputation in popular style. So if you’re worried about looking out of place in the here and now with a fedora, are your concerns justified?

A lot of this depends on how you want to wear your fedora.

In our opinion, fedoras are definitely still in style right now (they’re classic, after all) – but you have to wear them with a suitably elegant outfit to make the most of their style.

Swap out the t-shirts and tennis shoes for button-downs and chukkas, and a fedora hat is the perfect complement to your outfit.

Trilby Vs Fedora – Similarities and Differences

The fedora’s closest cousin is definitely the trilby – with the two hats looking so alike that even hat-experienced owners often confuse them for one another.

As if that wasn’t enough to confuse a potential hat buyer, they’re also often made of the same materials. However, trilbies are considered more casual hats and are less commonly made from high-quality felt or wool than fedoras.

The most obvious difference between a trilby and a fedora is the width, angle, and style of the trilby’s brim: Shorter (or “stingy”), steeper, and permanently curled down, it creates a tighter angle no matter how you wear it .

It also shares its shape and silhouette with the notoriously cheap, poorly made brimmed hats you’d find at street vendors in warm-weather joints, gas stations, and your local Wal Mart. It’s best to avoid those “fedoras,” which are actually terrible variants of the trilby.

Finally, the (classic, high-quality) trilby suits men with a smaller and narrower stature best. This is simply because of its proportions.

The skimpy brim looks awkward and tiny on a man with broad shoulders and a broad chest. In contrast, a fedora with its wider brim is much more proportioned (yes, even on the narrower gent).

Sinatra pulls off a trilby well. He was also a slimmer and smaller guy, so it made proportionate sense. Don Draper, on the other hand, is a big guy with a huge chest. The trilby just suits him weirdly.

So avoid the trilby as much as possible and go for a real fedora if you wear a brimmed hat anyway.

What to wear with a fedora hat?

The magic of the fedora is its versatility in complementing a variety of outfits, from smart casual wear to almost formal attire.

Of course, a fine fedora pairs well with a suit and tie, but sturdier versions pair well with denim, plaid flannel, and a field jacket.
