How Does Your Hair Look Under That Fedora?

If you’ve ever cut your hair from long to short, you know there are certain adjustments that need to be made. I cut my hair from a shoulder-length bob to a pixie cut more than five years ago, and while I knew straight away that short hair was for me, I still had to make a few adjustments, including how to wear a hat sluggish. I’ve changed my clothes (for a while I dressed much more femininely, although I’m in a comfortable middle ground now). I’ve changed the way I wear makeup and decided to have more fun with color and eyeliner than I have in the past. It also took me time to figure out how to style my pixie cut properly.

However, as I mentioned, the hardest customization of all was figuring out how to wear hats. It sounds silly, but I always thought I didn’t look good in hats anymore. Then the winter weather hit and it wasn’t so much a style choice anymore as it was a necessity. Luckily now I’m wearing all kinds of hats again. It just took time for my brain to adjust to how I look now wearing hats, as well as using some tricks I picked up along the way for making hats look flattering with my short hair.

Here are the top 5 tips I can give to other short haired girls trying to figure out how to make their pixie cut work under a hat:

1. Position the knitted hats correctly.

The key to wearing knit hats with short hair is to position the hat correctly on your head. You don’t want to drag it right onto your head and cover your forehead; Instead, pull it diagonally towards the back of your head, as seen above.

As you can see, my ears and most of my head are covered, but the hat doesn’t take up my face. Also, it’s not pulled all the way up, so the hat gets a little saggy at the back.

2. Let some of your hair peek out.

This is not how you wear your knit hat.

See how it’s pulled across my forehead and sticking right up to the sky? Does not look good; I look like a conehead. Plus, if you have short hair like I do, it allows the hat to completely swallow up my pixie cut, making it look like I have no hair at all, which isn’t the look I’m going for personally .

3. Experiment with different types of hats.

Sometimes when you go from long hair to short hair you have to re-evaluate what looks good on you. There are many hats that I feel I can’t pull off, like baseball caps or cloche hats. On the other hand, many women with short hair have told me that they love wearing these types of hats. I used to think wearing a fedora would have felt silly, but now I kind of feel like Jean Seberg in Breathless.

So try on lots of different hats — yes, even fedoras — and keep an open mind.

4. Wide brimmed hats are the best no matter how short your hair is.

Wide brimmed floppy hats are great for two reasons: they add a touch of glamor to everyday outfits and they protect your face from the sun. If you can get one in black or brown (or even burgundy or forest green), you can wear it with almost any outfit year-round.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing sunscreen, but it will help protect you from the sun and keep you looking well-groomed.

5. Add lipstick.

Finally, when in doubt, always add lipstick. My top pick is the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella (worn below); Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Standout is a similar budget-friendly option. A prominent lip adds some glamor to your outfit when paired with a large hat.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, $27, Sephora; Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Standout, $6, Amazon

And it will also help jazz up a plain knit hat.

So remember: always try to highlight some hair, don’t pull your knitted hat all the way down on your forehead (leave it loose instead), try on many different hats and always add a big hat and some lipstick Trust.

What does a fedora hat symbolize?

Soon after, fedora hats became a popular fashion statement and symbol for women’s rights activists, standing for liberation and assertiveness. Before long, the fedora style spread to all women and fashion-forward men like Oscar Wilde and Prince Edward VIII.

“Why are fedoras so popular?”

“Where did the fedora come from?”

“How old do you have to be to wear one?”

These are the questions we all ask…but don’t sweat it! We explain everything.

The word “Fedora” came from the theater!

Photo: World Stories

Fedora hats were first seen in 1883 as a feminine hat with masculine undertones, inspired by a drama called “Fédora” created by French playwright Victorien Sardou. Sarah Bernhardt, a French actress, played the lead role of Princess Fédora Romanoff, who wore a stylish center-pleat hat with a soft brim. Sarah was known for taking on menswear and acting roles that shocked audiences. The first review of the play named the style of Bernhardt’s hat “Fedora” after the title of the play. This review coined the name “Fedora Hat” into women’s fashion at the time and later into men’s fashion as well. Soon after, fedora hats became a popular fashion statement and symbol for suffragettes, representing liberation and assertiveness. Before long, the fedora style was spreading among all women and fashion-forward men like Oscar Wilde and Prince Edward VIII.

In 1924, Prince Edward VIII carried his fedora hat to the United States and dressed it with a suit instead of an everyday dress. The style has been seen by stars like Humphrey Bogart and notorious gangster Al Capone. In the 1940s and ’50s, cinema helped create the iconic symbol of masculinity and mystery with fedora hats worn by Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, and even football coaches Paul Bear Bryant and Tom Landry. The fedora later reappeared on the big screen in the 70’s and was designed to be as edgy and unique, but still practical, as Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones is known for. Most recently, fedoras have popularized their existence on shows like Mad Men and Peaky Blinders.

Fedoras for the Urban People

Fedora hats have been the practical choice for most to protect a person’s head from the weather and wind. The original style for the fedora hat was felt, with a wide brim, notched crown with a pinched front, and a ribbon accent. This hat was best known for being able to be folded without losing its shape and could even be shaped by the individual wearer, a hat that could suit any personality or style. For example, a gangster would wear his hat with the brim down to prevent anyone from seeing his eyes, while a rancher would wear his hat with the brim up to keep out the rain.

How do you wear a bowler hat with short hair?

If you have short hair, you can wear your Bowler Hat in the standard fashion — with the crown pulled down far enough so that there is still some space between the top of your head and the hat. Additionally, there should be visible space between the brim and top of your ears.

How Does Your Hair Look Under That Fedora?

The bowler hat is one of the most iconic hat designs in the world. Although the bowler hat is more than a century and a half old, it remains a popular fashion choice among men and women to this day. Adorning the heads of kings and commoners alike, it has made the bowler hat one of the most versatile hats in the history of modern fashion.

So what makes the melon so special? Why is it called a bowler hat? How to wear a bowler hat Finally, where can you buy a quality bowler hat online? We’ll answer all of these questions and more, but first, let’s look at the bowler hat design and how it came to be!

What is a melon?

The traditional bowler hat goes by many names, including Billycock, Bob Hat, Bombin, and Derby Hat (we’ll explain more about that last confusing name a little later). Unlike the more old-fashioned top hat that preceded it, the bowler hat is recognizable by its distinctive rounded crown. The brim is generally short and turned up, although there are dozens of modern versions with different brims. Traditionally, the bowler was a black felt hat worn by men as a semi-formal accessory. Nowadays, bowler hats come in many different shades and styles for both men and women.

Why is it called a melon?

The answer to this question is very simple. It’s called the Bowler Hat because it was originally designed by Thomas and William Bowler. Since they created the original design, it was only natural that the hat would bear the same name as its creators.

Although historians dispute the exact origin of the bowler hat, it is often cited that the design originated in London around 1849. The new hat was commissioned by a customer of the Bowler family milliners. The customer required strong, close-fitting hats to protect hunters from low-hanging branches while riding. The exact identity of the original customer is also disputed, although many historians believe it was Thomas William Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester who requested the new design. The top hats he and his team of hunters wore were often knocked down and damaged while hunting, so the bowler hat provided the perfect solution to their problem.

During the late 19th century, the bowler hat became one of the most popular hats worn by working-class men in England, Ireland and even the United States. Over time, the hat became more closely associated with middle- and upper-class gentlemen working in finance. In the early 20th century, many aristocrats, politicians and celebrities adopted the look, including figures such as Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill (although the latter often preferred the Homburg’s softer styling).

It was around this time that women also started wearing bowler hats. It was particularly common for men and women participating in equestrian sports and activities to wear the hat for protection. In the early 1970s, the hat enjoyed a resurgence in popularity thanks to its use by Liza Minnelli in the film Cabaret.

More recently, the hat has become a popular 21st century fashion and status symbol, with designers producing various iterations and recreations of the original design. Celebrities continue to wear the hat in both its original form and in more modern adaptations. Thanks to its strong, durable design and classic style, the bowler hat will remain a fashion staple for decades to come.

How to wear a bowler hat

One of the main advantages of the bowler hat is its versatility as a fashion accessory. Not only is it unisex, but it can also accompany a variety of outfits and personal styles. In addition, you can wear a bowler hat in different positions depending on your hair, the time of day or even your mood!

Although you can have virtually any hair length and still wear a bowler hat comfortably, it’s easiest to pair the hat with short hair. If you have short hair, you can wear your bowler hat as normal – with the crown pulled down far enough to leave some space between your head and the hat. Also, there should be a visible space between the brim and the top of your ears. This is often referred to as the standard or “flat” style because the brim remains flat (ie, perpendicular to the ground).

While the flat style is best for semi-formal or formal occasions, you may want to learn how to wear a bowler hat casually as well. Luckily, the less formal styles for men and women are basically the same, regardless of your hair length. The bowler can easily be placed on the head with the front of the brim facing up. This style has become one of the most popular ways to wear the bowler hat in recent years.

In addition, the melon can be worn with a slight drop to the brim. In other words, the crown can sit more firmly on the head while the front of the brim faces down. This style can be used to protect the face or eyes from the sun or wind, or simply to maintain a sense of anonymity!

Finally, there are several alternative ways to wear a bowler hat that suit different environments or styles. It is common among musicians (especially jazz musicians) to wear bowler hats with the brim tilted to one side. This style is casual but tends to turn heads as it is an obvious departure from the other ways to position the bowler hat.

Bowlers vs Derby Hats

While the bowler hat has a unique history and has been popular for well over a century, it is often confused with other hat styles. In particular, there is often confusion between the terms “bowler” and “derby”. However, the demarcation is relatively clear. Bowler hat is simply the name the hat design adopted in England while Americans historically referred to it as a derby hat. So there is no real difference between a bowler hat and a derby hat.

Nonetheless, this created even more confusion as there was the Kentucky Derby Hat, also known as the Derby Fascinator. Both names refer to an entirely different style of hat traditionally worn by women competing in horse races, namely the Kentucky Derby. Despite the similarity in name, these hats have no stylistic or historical connection with the derby hat created by Thomas and William Bowler.

The final result

As you can see, the bowler hat is more than just a chic fashion accessory; it is also a status symbol and even a part of European and American history. While the hat’s elegance and sophistication is evident in its design, you may be concerned that it may be difficult to acquire an authentic bowler hat. Fortunately, Bellissimo Hats is here for you. We offer high quality bowlers in a variety of sizes to meet your specific needs and budget!

Are fedoras out of style?

In our opinion, fedoras are definitely still in style right now (they’re classic, after all) — but you have to wear them with an appropriately dressy outfit to make the best of their style. Trade out the t-shirts and tennis shoes for button-downs and chukkas, and a fedora hat will suit your outfit just fine.

How Does Your Hair Look Under That Fedora?

Are fedora hats trending in 2021?

Although fedoras were popular with gangsters and entertainers in the 1920s, they have not always maintained a solid reputation in popular style. So if you’re worried about looking out of place in the here and now with a fedora, are your concerns justified?

A lot of this depends on how you want to wear your fedora.

In our opinion, fedoras are definitely still in style right now (they’re classic, after all) – but you have to wear them with a suitably elegant outfit to make the most of their style.

Swap out the t-shirts and tennis shoes for button-downs and chukkas, and a fedora hat is the perfect complement to your outfit.

Trilby Vs Fedora – Similarities and Differences

The fedora’s closest cousin is definitely the trilby – with the two hats looking so alike that even hat-experienced owners often confuse them for one another.

As if that wasn’t enough to confuse a potential hat buyer, they’re also often made of the same materials. However, trilbies are considered more casual hats and are less commonly made from high-quality felt or wool than fedoras.

The most obvious difference between a trilby and a fedora is the width, angle, and style of the trilby’s brim: Shorter (or “stingy”), steeper, and permanently curled down, it creates a tighter angle no matter how you wear it .

It also shares its shape and silhouette with the notoriously cheap, poorly made brimmed hats you’d find at street vendors in warm-weather joints, gas stations, and your local Wal Mart. It’s best to avoid those “fedoras,” which are actually terrible variants of the trilby.

Finally, the (classic, high-quality) trilby suits men with a smaller and narrower stature best. This is simply because of its proportions.

The skimpy brim looks awkward and tiny on a man with broad shoulders and a broad chest. In contrast, a fedora with its wider brim is much more proportioned (yes, even on the narrower gent).

Sinatra and Draper in similar trilbies (looks better on Sinatra).

Sinatra pulls off a trilby well. He was also a slimmer and smaller guy, so it made proportionate sense. Don Draper, on the other hand, is a big guy with a huge chest. The trilby just suits him weirdly.

So avoid the trilby as much as possible and go for a real fedora if you wear a brimmed hat anyway.

What to wear with a fedora hat?

The magic of the fedora is its versatility in complementing a variety of outfits, from smart casual wear to almost formal attire.

Of course, a fine fedora pairs well with a suit and tie, but sturdier versions pair well with denim, plaid flannel, and a field jacket.

Raphael from Gentleman’s Gazette in a suit with fedora. Barron in a more casual outfit with a fedora.

The options are pretty much endless!

You can scroll up to revisit Barron’s casual outfit — a red and black checked wool shirt jacket with a dark gray flannel shirt underneath — and his mink-colored wool felt hat from Bailey Hats … the same fedora he wears with his green quilted coat on the photo above.

The trilby’s shorter brim earned it the nickname “stingy-brimmed hat.” Fedoras are much more flexible and versatile, allowing you to fold the brim up or down as you see fit. Trilbies have a thinner brim that curves down in the front and up in the back.

Straw trilby hats are popular in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Frank Sinatra wore both fedoras and trilbies. However, most of his fashion ensembles used fedora hats instead of trilbies. Sinatra also liked to tilt his fedora to one side.

Trilby with snap edges

The definition of a snap brim hat is one where you can flip the brim up at the back and down at the front. Fedoras fit that description. But trilbies that have solid brims don’t.

Straw trilby

Trilbies tend to be more casual hats, so many of them are made out of lightweight material like straw. Some examples are raffia, wheat straw and toyo straw.

Straw trilby hats are cooler because they allow more body heat to escape. Trilby hats (aka stingy brims) were worn by reporters with a press pass under the brim in the ’40s and ’50s. Frank Sinatra also wore a trilby, and this hat is popular with jazz musicians. Trilbies are usually felted

Origin of the trilby hat

The name Trilby derives from the title of the popular 1894 novel Trilby written by George Du Maurier. The main character’s name was Trilby. During a stage adaptation of the book, the actress who played Trilby wore a stingy brim that sloped down in front and up in back. The play was popular and the name stuck.

Ever since the play premiered in London, the trilby has been popular in English fashion before making its way across the pond to the United States.

The trilby didn’t make the rounds in America until the 1970s. The film The Blues Brothers helped bring the style into the mainstream. More recently, Jason Mraz, Ne-yo and Pharell Williams have been spotted wearing trilby hats.

Felt hats are popular because they retain body heat and provide shade from the sun.

How to wear a fedora hat

The fedora is a versatile hat that works well for both casual and formal occasions. Wearers should place the hat comfortably over the center of the forehead and above the ears.

A well-fitting fedora sits two finger widths above your eyebrows. Some users may prefer a tilted look, similar to Frank Sinatra or Humphrey Bogart. The traditional look for a fedora is to wear it straight and match the color and style to your outfit.

How to style a fedora hat

There are a few elements to consider when choosing a fedora, such as:

Color – Usually you want a lighter color for warmer climates. Darker colors work well for cooler environments, but we say wear what you want, when you want.

Material – Straw fedoras – also known as panama hats – are good for the hotter seasons. Alternatively, felt hats are ideal for cold weather and all year round in polar and sub-polar climates.

Look – You can either go for a traditional, centered look or slide the hat to one side like Frank Sinatra. The shape of the brim can also affect the look of the fedora. The classic variation is to snap the brim up at the back and down at the front.

Straw fedoras

As already mentioned, a straw fedora hat is also known as a panama hat. Since the Panama hat is made entirely of straw, it can be easily confused.

The best time to wear a straw fedora is in the summer as the material is more breathable and helps your head stay cooler. But you can also wear them year-round in equatorial, sub-equatorial, and tropical climates.

Straw fedoras are called panama hats.

bottom line

A trilby or a fedora is so often confused with the other that some hat shops even use the names interchangeably. But they are not the same. Trilbies are typically casual hats that are more fashionable than practical. In many cases, trilby wearers use the “halo” style and position the hat on the back of the head. In comparison, the fedora is a classic hat that suits both casual and formal wear.

Tips On How To Wear Fedora Hats For Women

We generally consider the fedora hat to be a menswear staple, but history shows that fedoras were just as popular for women and acted as a symbol of the beginning of the women’s rights movement. Politics no longer plays a role in the perception of the female fedora, but it has secured its place as a popular fashion accessory.

A Brief History of the Fedora

Surprise! The fedora actually started with a woman. According to History Of Hats, the Fedora style originated from a piece by Victorien Sardou aptly named “Fédora”. Stage actress Sarah Bernhardt wore the felt piece in her role as Fédora Romanoff, which made women’s felt hats increasingly popular. Later, the fedora hat became a popular fashion accessory of the gangster-ridden Prohibition era, and women’s fedora hats lost their appeal.

Are fedoras in fashion today?

These soft brimmed hats with their notched crowns have been growing in popularity among celebrities and fashion influencers in recent years. If you’re not used to wearing hats, you’ll find that styling a fedora is pretty easy. You don’t have to deal with an overly heavy, saggy brim getting in your way, and despite the softness of the felt and wool, the fabric holds its shape really well.

4 tips for wearing a fedora hat

Don’t feel like you have to choose between a traditional felt or wool style fedora. There are some lovely woven straw hats that are lightweight and breathable for being out in the heat: great for summer. A small fedora really is a year-round hat and a great investment in style.

Looking for a more feminine fedora hat? There are many designs with a wider and softer brim that strike the perfect balance between the floppy hat and the classic fedora. If you’re outdoors a lot you get extra protection from the sun, but you still have that identifiable notched crown and band. The classic Fedora style favors neutral colors like black, grey, ivory or tan. But if you’re looking for fedoras for girls, why not branch out and look for a bright shade or pattern to switch it up. It’s a great way to break up a monochromatic outfit. Wondering how you look good in a hat? Very simple: Think about your hairstyle! You don’t have to wear it in a simple ponytail or let it all down. A boho-inspired side braid or an elegant low side chignon look super chic. A fedora hat doesn’t have to be thought of as just casual wear either. You’ll also find that short pixie cuts or a head full of curls complete great fedora hat outfits. Combat the difficulty of ordering online and finding the wrong size by properly measuring your hat: First, measure about 3/4 inch above your ears with a soft tape measure (you don’t want your fedora to sit too low).

When it comes to headwear, you should measure to within 1/8th of an inch.

Check the size chart for the brand you’re looking to buy and if you find you’re between sizes, you should always go up a size.

What to wear with a fedora hat?

Wondering how to pair a fedora hat with any outfit? Here are a few tips on how to look good in a hat, from lunch dates with girlfriends to more formal events like outdoor weddings.

For the beach:

If you’ve ever wondered how to wear a straw hat, go to the beach! Pair a wide-brimmed fedora with a modern bikini and look for a breezy cover-up to slip over your bathing suit as you wander between water and sand.

Another option is a shorter shirt dress if you’re not a fan of see-through kaftans.

For a day with your girls:

A fedora hat in neutral colors looks great with all types of denim: distressed, flared, skinny, mom or a pair of cut-off shorts are very complementary.

You can opt for a boyfriend-style t-shirt and a loose cardigan, or throw yourself back to the 70s with a pair of shorts and an off-the-shoulder lace top.

For the way to work:

Pair your fedora with sleek black pants and a structured white button-down shirt and you have a solid business-casual outfit.

Try skinny pants with a silky blouse and you’ll find that your fedora actually adds rather than takes away elegance.

For an outdoor wedding:

It’s totally possible to make a hat work during wedding season. Try on a jewel-colored jumpsuit, heels and a chic clutch. You will look elegant for the celebration.

A classic hat can look so glamorous with the right dress. A throwback to retro style in its fitted glory looks wonderfully timeless. Keep classic styles in your wardrobe to ensure longevity.

Different styles of fedora hats

We’ve covered how brim width can transform your look for a variety of occasions and outfits, but there are actually several different fedora styles. If you look at the indentations of the crown, you can divide them into about nine categories: from a Frank Sinatra fedora to a Panama fedora to more feminine styles. This is a chance to experiment with your looks.

Difference between trilby and fedora hats

Although a trilby looks very similar, it is not a fedora. The brim of a trilby is turned up at the back and you’ll notice that the front slopes slightly down compared to the brim of a fedora, which doesn’t have the same degree of asymmetry. The crown of a fedora hat is also higher than that of a trilby.

Other types of women’s hats

Depending on the occasion, you may be looking for other grooming replacement products. Right now, the urban wear boom has made women prefer edgy graphic baseball caps. Borrowed from athletes’ sports caps, this style of headgear has become a permanent fixture in skateboard and hip-hop culture. Be inspired by the multifaceted wardrobes of Rihanna and Rita Ora.

Perfect for cold weather, knit hats are another style that is both practical and stylish. Though they can appear fairly plain, they pair well with denim and loose sweatshirts, plus Lauren Conrad waves to complete the look. Oversized knit hats also look great with winter layers.

On the other hand, if you are heading to a formal occasion like a wedding or the races, you might want to opt for a fascinator. Technically, it’s more of a headgear than a hat. Some milliners create a hybrid hat and fascinator – aptly referred to as a ‘hatinator’ – but in reality what you are looking at is highly decorative headwear, ranging from the simple to the avant-garde.

A quick guide to wearing fedora hats for women

When it’s hot, we recommend breathable straw fedoras and wide-brimmed hats for added protection.

Say goodbye to the neutral fedora style with a bright color like red or mustard yellow.

You can try several hairstyles under your fedora. A side braid or low chignon can look really pretty and will help jazz up your hat when you need it.

Measure correctly to ensure you get the correct fit. Go 3/4 inch past your ear and measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. If you are between sizes, make sure you choose the larger size.

When it comes to fedora hat outfits, pair them with denim and a cardigan for your casual gatherings, tailored pants to get your headwear ready for work, a kaftan for a breezy beach look and a glamorous dress for formal occasions.

There are a variety of female fedora hats to choose from, so have fun experimenting with styles.

Wearing a Fedora: Final Note

In everyday dressing, a hat is often overlooked in favor of a new handbag or piece of jewelry. However, a quality fedora hat can save you from those bad hair days or complete your outfit. Hats off!

How Does Your Hair Look Under That Fedora?

I can’t believe how many fedoras I’m seeing around town this summer. Did you embrace this trend? If the answer is yes, I have one more question: how exactly do you wear your hair under the hat?

Famke Jannsen is the latest celebrity to be photographed wearing a felt hat this summer.

We have the following suggestions from Suki Duggan, owner of Donsuki Townhouse Salon on the Upper East Side, where fedoras have been more common than doves this season. She says that despite what you may think, it’s actually pretty important to pay attention to how you style your hair when wearing a fedora – since this type of hat has such a masculine edge, you want to show your femininity through save his hair.

“A lot of women just put a hat on top of their everyday hairstyle,” she says. “This will create an unflattering effect, especially if you have long or full hair. With a fedora, there are two different options you can take. If you want a relaxed look, wear your hair down but a little messy. The softness of soft hair with the sharp angles of the hat make a great pairing. For a sensual look, tie hair back in a ponytail or bun underneath the fedora. This accentuates your face and creates a very sexy look. I love this look for the night.”

How do you wear your hair under a fedora? Does it end up looking flat or greasy when you take the hat off, or do you have a system to keep the hat from nodding?
