Choosing the right skirt for your figure can accentuate your hips and complement your body type. If you have an hourglass figure, opt for a solid color pencil skirt to accentuate your curves. If you have a slimmer figure, choose an A-line skirt in a lightweight fabric that flares slightly and gives you the illusion of being curvier. For a pear shaped figure, try a knee length A-line skirt in darker colors to flatter your curves. If your hips are really wide, opt for a trumpet skirt to balance your hips and lower body. So you’re here for the answer to your burning question – are tulle skirts hot in 2022? The simple answer is yes… and no. let me explain.

When I started my blog in 2015, tulle skirts were EVERYWHERE and I lived for it! This is really when my obsession started. During this time, most were about knee length or shorter with very puffy layers. It was also known as the “tutu” skirt due to its ballerina-like appearance.

While I don’t think tulle skirts have ever given up entirely, I do think they’re coming back in full force in 2022. Instead of the short, puffy layers of the last decade, however, we’re seeing much more streamlined silhouettes with softer fabrics and longer lengths. Think less poofy and more flowy 😉 2022 tulle skirts are full of volume and movement in a romantic way.

I think the style and design difference has to do with a lot of the feminine and romantic trends we’ve seen over the past few years. For example, the Regencycore trend and Bridgerton have inspired a whole new feminine wardrobe. The balletcore and princess dress trends are also on the rise and mean lots of tulle! As a result, we see a variety of options for tulle skirts in longer lengths like full ball gown, tea length, midi, and knee length.

2022 tulle skirts are also much more wearable. Although the poofy versions exist, there are so many more that are much less voluminous than their predecessors. The color options are endless and tulle is used in new ways during the design process. Check out more of my tulle skirt looks for more variations on this classic silhouette!

People also have a lot more fun styling! Tulle skirts are no longer reserved for princesses and ballerinas. They can honestly work with any personal style, from ladylike or romantic to grunge or minimalist. They can be dressed up or down, used for monochromatic looks and styled creatively in so many ways.

Long story short – yes, tulle skirts will still be popular in 2022! Look for longer lengths, streamlined silhouettes, softer tulle fabrics and less “puff”. Of course, I’m a proponent of wearing whatever you like. So if you prefer it poofy, go for it! Wearing tulle is about feeling beautiful, confident and wearing it in a way that feels true to you, so have some fun! Here is my favorite place to shop for tulle skirts!

spread the love

I asked one of the more popular fashion bloggers how to wear a tulle skirt over 50 and basically got a good laugh from her, but I love tulle skirts. There simply isn’t a more feminine, flirty, whimsical and downright girly skirt out there. Ever since Carrie Bradshaw stumbled down a New York street in that tulle skirt, ballerina skirts have been dancing across the fashion pages, and they won’t be stopping anytime soon.

I know, I know – you think – tulle skirt? I’m too old, serious, thin, round, short, tall etc. to wear it, right? Not correct. It’s time for some whims in our lives. (You 40+ girls – I’m talking to you especially). You don’t have to be a ballerina to wear a tulle skirt.

Nowadays, tulle skirts are becoming one of fashion’s newest obsessions and can be seen everywhere. Between bloggers and fashion shops, tulle skirts are making their way into people’s hearts and wardrobes! A tulle skirt can be really cute or really cheesy depending on how you wear it. First off, it’s not the slimmest of skirts, so finding a flattering fit/length is crucial. It is best worn as a midi length skirt. Second, it’s not very work-friendly either, so it’s best to save it for weekends or special occasions

Tulle skirts are extremely versatile and great for any occasion (except maybe work)! You can dress it up with adult staples to make you look sophisticated and really chic, although you can make it fun by pairing it with some sneakers and a Screen tee. If you want to go for a classy vintage look then you better try it with chic details and cool accents and try on cool cat eye sunglasses and awesome pearl jewelry accessories.

Although I think anyone can participate in this trend, how to wear this trend is up to the person, their personal style, body shape and age.

Reasons why women don’t wear a tulle skirt

1. They’re too short or fairyy:

The tulle skirt is available in mini, short, medium and flowing long. I don’t know of a woman who can’t rock one of these lengths with the right lines and proportions to make her look fabulous. I’m not talking about tutu here – but simple, elegant tulle in a color that suits you and your accessories.

2. They are too revealing:

Tulle skirts don’t have to be revealing either. The right number of layers and drape of fabric can cover just the important parts or frame you from waist to ankle with movement and style.

3. They are only for special occasions or costumes:

Tulle skirts are now made in all colors for day and evening, casual, fun and formal styles. Yes, there is one for work, club, cocktail party, picnic and evening wear.

My tips for styling a tulle skirt

DO

Opt for traditional ballet colors like soft pink and cream.

Go outfitted on top. It balances the body.

Belt the waist. It gives you shape and defines your curves. Even if you don’t have any, they will suddenly magically appear.

Create contrasts. Opposites attract. Since the skirt is puffy and pointed, leather, knitwear or denim create a wonderful contrast.

Combine it with ballet flats for more comfort. Nude or gold tones will help make your legs appear longer.

Or choose a high heel instead of flat shoes. If your shirt is simple and you don’t want to look too fancy, round toe black patent pumps work well. When you go all out, a strappy sandal with a chunky look is the way to go.

Mix up the look on top – try a striped shirt or a black sweater.

Try wearing it under a different skirt.

Add a slim boyfriend blazer to the mix. Please nothing too short or too big.

NOT

Don’t even think about wearing a leotard with this tutu.

DO NOT wear shoes that lace up around the ankle, you’re getting too literal.

DO NOT wear a tote or oversized bag with this outfit, it looks too heavy.

Don’t get too cute with the accessories. Strong cuffs, chunky rings and badass necklaces are key. Filigree jewelery and hair ornaments should be avoided, after all you are already wearing a tutu.

DO NOT wear a loose top with your tutu. The skirt is already voluminous and you will look too tall if you don’t wear a fitted shirt.

Avoid over-the-top ballerina references by choosing a top that’s minimally leotard-like. A fitted white cap-sleeve blouse with chunky faux pearls is cool. A plain-fitting t-shirt also works, as does a t-shirt with an embellishment at the neck. You can even make a white racerback tank top as long as you make some sort of chunky and chunky necklace so it doesn’t get too cute. We like a gunmetal or silver multi-strand necklace.

Don’t be afraid to try this style even if you’re not ballerina size! Because every shape can rock a bit of tulle

All about length

THE MINI – This silhouette can’t be too short or it looks like a tutu. My suggestions are to look for something that ends just above the knee. Keep the tulle light so it doesn’t look super puffy. Keep your colors light or deep and dark. Bright at this length resembles the look of prom queen “Betsey Johnson” from the 1990s. You want to be fun and trendy, but not so trendy that you start looking silly and over the top.

The hem should hit mid-calf, and a straight cut is the most versatile. You can get a bit funkier with this length and allow it to have a little more punch with poof and even more punch with color choices. Because of the length, it will always weigh down and look classy. Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Often this length doesn’t offer many layers because you want to stay away from the wedding dress look. In addition, you will find models that offer a fabric skirt with transparent tulle underneath. With the color choices for this length, it’s safe to go dark with black, camo green, aubergine purple, and even a black with a little shine.

How to wear a tulle skirt over 40

When you’re over 40, trying to wear a garment designed for ballerinas and fairies takes a little daring. If you have that and a sense of adventure, you really can wear whatever you want. Attitude and confidence allowed Gwyneth to get away with it.

I recently came across this look from Ms. Jeannie and my jaw dropped.

It put me back in a tulle state.

I was looking for tulle skirts again. Check out the inspiration I found.

Okay, the last one is just a fantasy look for Shania Twain.

After looking at all these fabulous tulle skirts I am doing everything in my power not to buy this one. However, my finger twitches when I hover over the buy button.

I have 3 black tulle skirts in my closet. And I hardly ever wear them.

Why do not you ask?

I bought 2 of these online for super cheap…$11 (shipping included!) and decided to hand cut one as it was too long. If they’re that cheap, I don’t mind going with scissors.

How do you say … big, jagged mess?

I left the other one long, but the waist is weird and I always have to buckle it. It’s all bulky. The waist is elastic and looks cheap. You get what you pay for.

I think these two skirts might need to go to the consignment store.

The last tulle skirt I own, I love it. I bought it from Anthropologie (big surprise) and it looks way better than the other two.

I decided I needed to get it out of the closet and figure out a few outfits. It has to be carried.

It’s mid-season here and it’s still quite chilly outside, so boots, tights and a scarf.

Check Blazer – TopShop (similar), Boots – TJ Maxx (similar), Skirt – Anthropologie (similar)

Top – TJ Maxx (that would be nice), Boots – TJ Maxx (sim), Skirt – Anthropologie (sim)

Floral Skirt – TJ Maxx (this one is SO pretty! and this one is making me drool), Boots – TJ Maxx (sim), Skirt – Anthropologie (how about this gorgeous one with tulle and embroidery)

For this final look, I’m wearing the tulle skirt as a petticoat, which gives the skirt some length and extra detail.

Can you wear tulle to a wedding?

TO WEAR TULLET TO A WEDDING

TULLOCK AT A WEDDING

Tulle skirts are still very popular. Especially for all kinds of special occasions and of course the weddings. On my blog you will find many outfits with tulle skirts (e.g. pink tulle, mint tulle). Some time ago I prepared a special post with tips on how to style a tulle skirt. Today I’m going to focus on wearing a tulle skirt to a wedding. 🙂 Ok, let’s do that.

Let’s start by asking whether or not it’s okay to wear a tulle skirt to a wedding. Yes it is! Just remember, you shouldn’t wear anything too bridal… That means no white, cream, ecru or blush. You cannot compete with the Evening Star – the Bride!

So what length of tulle skirt is appropriate?

In general, you should not wear a maxi skirt to a wedding. Wearing a maxi tulle skirt is just too risky…(the bride herself may wear a dress with a long tulle skirt). Also, the maxi skirt is a bit uncomfortable at a wedding. It takes up a lot of space (and you don’t want everyone running away from your table, do you?) and it’s difficult to dance in a maxi skirt (you don’t want to take up the entire dance floor). The best choices are knee length or midi skirts (middle length). Mini tulle skirt is not a good choice… It might not be very interesting to look at if you bend over. 🙂 Always remember: wedding guest outfit must be elegant, it must not be too provocative!

What to wear with a tulle skirt?

All kinds of delicate blouses like cami tops or short sleeves would be perfect. You can also choose an interesting corset (but remember that it should not show too much cleavage).

What shoes to wear with a tulle skirt?

Even if a tulle skirt is quite unique in itself, it goes well with delicate sandals, classic pumps, but also with somewhat more extravagant shoes (e.g. with shiny heels). It is going to be! Just remember to choose a comfortable heel height. You go there to have fun, not to waste your time putting patches on your feet… 😉

You can find all of my wedding-related articles in the Wedding bookmark. 🙂

Now it’s time to shed another 10 pounds with some more fashion weight loss tricks. You may know that a jacket that’s tailored just right makes you look thinner, but did you know that color and pattern also play a role? It’s time to go beyond the bare minimum with these fashion hacks for losing weight…

How to wear flattering colors

One of the easiest ways to instantly look thinner is by wearing flattering colors.

What skirts are slimming?

If You’re Slim: Wear Asymmetrical Skirts

Your frame is straight up and down with fewer curves — and that’s OK! You’ll do best in skirts that have ruffles or asymmetrical details — anything that creates the illusion of curves or a wider bottom. Fuller skirts will also draw attention to your lower half.

For some people, skirts are the most difficult clothing category to shop for simply because sizing varies widely from retailer to retailer and finding the perfect fit can be difficult. Some may prefer mini skirts to show off their legs or high-waist pants to feel more supported, while others gravitate toward midi skirts for their more office-ready silhouette.

The good news is that there is a skirt for every style, occasion and body type. You don’t have to follow the guidelines below exactly (tall girls can certainly wear A-line skirts too!), but hopefully our practical advice will serve as a starting point for your skirt search.

Wear fitted clothing to flatter your figure.

Look for shirts that have darting or shape to them so they skim your body. For pants, choose a straight-leg, bootcut, or tailored look. However, avoid a relaxed fit or trouser pant. For skirts or dresses, look for pencil, a-line, or fit-and-flare options.

How to wear a tulle skirt without looking fat

How to wear a tulle skirt without looking fat

You must have seen many fashionistas in tulle skirts on Instagram. And let’s admit it, they look great.

Do you want to look perfect in these cute skirts? Then stay with me and find out how to wear a tulle skirt without looking fat.

Why am I mentioning fat here? Because in most cases, women who wear tulle skirts look taller than they really are. Fortunately, there are a few ways to avoid this. Let’s discover them together.

Find the best tulle skirt for you

There are some characteristics you should know about tulle skirts. They differ in length, waist and shape.

For the waist, it is always the best idea to go for the highest waist as it works perfectly for curvy ladies too.

Even if you are slim and tall, it is still a good idea to wear high-rise tulle skirts as they will make you look slimmer and taller.

When we talk about the length of the tulle skirts, trying a short skirt is the first good option for you. I mean, if you want to wear a tulle skirt without looking bold, that’s your choice.

I know you may be thinking “that girl is crazy, I’m not slim enough to wear a miniskirt”, but listen to me.

First of all, being curvy or even fat does not mean that there is something wrong with your body. On the other hand, you might have perfect legs or shoulders. So it’s always a good idea to maximize your assets and minimize the parts you don’t like about your body.

If you are plus size, you can check out another article on how to wear a tulle skirt. I have shared pieces of clothing that look beautiful with a tulle skirt. So have a look.

Of course, if you don’t have long and slender legs (like me), that’s fine too. But if you’re wondering what I thought about it, I’ll share my personal experience with you.

I find I look more stylish, so I feel more confident when I wear a skirt that hits above my knee. I never wear the skirt with it underneath. Unless it’s a maxi skirt. Because this is another way to wear a maxi tulle skirt without looking bulky for us who have bigger legs.

Now let’s talk about the shapes of tulle skirts. I can’t name them all, but there are tulle skirts that are too fluffy, making the woman look very bulky and fat.

It is obvious that you need to wear a tulle skirt that has some volume. It’s not a tulle skirt without it, is it?

In short, the first thing you need to do is find the most flattering tulle skirt for your body type.

And now we come to the next one.

Always wear heels with it

Actually, wearing high heels with a tulle skirt is a must even if you are not petite. If yes, all you have to think about is wearing heels while styling a tulle skirt outfit. I mean every day, every minute.

Why so strict? – Well, because my main goal is to help you look the best version of yourself. So wearing a tulle skirt without a heel is not a really good idea. On the other hand, it really makes you look bulky.

I have other 100% working tips to look slimmer and taller without wearing heels. So if you are looking for ideas you should check out my post on this. (The rule that you must wear heels with a tulle skirt always remains in effect.)

Wear it with tight tops

Combining tight and loose clothing is the rule that you should always follow if you want to look stylish.

It’s always a good idea to wear something tight (baggy) on top and baggy (top) on the bottom.

There are some exceptions when both tight tops and bottoms work well. Sometimes both wide parts look OK. But not in most cases, remember!

So we’re talking about a tulle skirt and we agree on wearing tighter tops with it.

If you have a large bust and don’t feel very comfortable in tight tops, you can definitely try something a little larger, but don’t go too far.

You can check out my older article on flattering tops to hide some body parts such as: B. a large bust size. You will find the best alternatives for your there.

Choose the right colors

You’ve probably heard that darker colors always make you look slimmer. I won’t talk about it much, I promise.

But here are other things I want to share with you.

At best, it’s a good idea to wear a top that’s a similar color to your tulle skirt. Yes, I mean monochromatic outfits.

Going for all black is great for you. But it’s not satisfying to always wear black because of a few extra pounds, is it? So always try to play with different colors.

Here are my suggestions.

You can wear the bodice in the same shade as your tulle skirt.

If you want to try more colorful outfits, you can also choose complementary colors like orange and blue. You can easily find them on the color wheel, just search on google.

So what do I mean in the same shade?

I mean, for example, if you have a gorgeous tulle skirt in blush, you can wear it with a lavender top or violet, which are great shades of blush.

Use a fanny pack for tulle skirt outfits

Do you actually love this trend? I personally do.

I really like how cool the belt bag looks with different outfits. Even if we forget the styling side of this piece, I’d say it’s that comfortable. I like to wear it everywhere because I can always have a few little things with me.

Ok, so now let’s get back to what we started.

Wearing a fanny pack with a tulle skirt is a great idea. But I have another amazing thing I want to share with you.

You can create an outfit with a simple top, tulle skirt, blazer and belt bag. Believe me, this is something wonderful, chic, stylish. All in one outfit.

Why does the combination work? Because the belt bag takes over the part of the belt that goes perfectly with the blazer and skirt. So yeah, they just work amazingly together.

Always accessorize the tulle skirt outfits

Whether you like it or not, a tulle skirt always attracts attention. You have to balance that. Nobody likes to see people staring at their butt. Haha

Therefore, you should always wear accessories such as jewelry, handbag, etc.

You will draw more attention to your top half and your outfit will also look more interesting.

Put a hat on your head

Whether you like panama or derby hats, you must know – the hat is an accessory that goes beautifully with tulle skirt outfits.

The look of woman wearing tulle skirt with hat looks luxurious, so chic and feminine.

Wear pointy shoes

If you want to look interesting and stylish, and also not want to look fat, you must wear pointy shoes with tulle skirt outfits. It makes your legs look longer, making you look slimmer and taller too.

Conclusion:

I hope you find some ideas on how to wear a tulle skirt without looking bulky. The best thing you can do is always feel confident. Without that you will not look perfect in any of the outfits.

I am happy if I can help you with anything. Thank you for reading!

How do you style a long tulle skirt?

A long tulle skirt that hits just above the ankles pairs beautifully with a cropped top to balance out the full butt. Usually, a pair of flats with a tulle skirt can look too much like a ballerina. With a long tulle skirt that doesn’t let you see the shoes right away, a simple, pointy pair of flats creates a sophisticated look.

How to wear tulle to a wedding

Wearing a tulle skirt outfit for a wedding can be tricky, but it can be done. You never know what the bride or bridal party will be wearing, and there’s a big chance their dresses will include some tulle or even have a tulle skirt. So for a wedding I would err on the conservative side and go for a shorter tulle skirt and pair it with a printed bodice. A tulle skirt and a printed bodice clearly look like separate pieces that set it apart from the fabulous dress worn by the bride or bridal party. You might also want to try a dark colored top as the bride or party is unlikely to wear a dark color like black. Add a statement heel that screams more wedding guest than bride.

Can a piece be more feminine than a tulle skirt?

A tulle skirt can bring a lot of femininity to your wardrobe. It awakens childhood dreams of being a princess. Remember, these costumes were all tulle and glam. ballet and dancing. I spend hours watching ballroom dancing competitions on TV because I adore the dresses. The skirt is reminiscent of Edgar Degas’ famous painting La Classe de Danse. And of course, tulle is a great fabric for wedding and evening dresses. This post is about how to style a tulle skirt for different occasions and different style personalities at all ages.

Tulle skirts come in a variety of styles

In its “original” form, it is an elongated tutu design. The half circle cut works incredibly well to hide some flaws. Both styles accentuate the waist. The same goes for a tired-style version.

If you prefer a slim silhouette or find all that volume impractical (yes, it is), a full skirt version is a great option. In maxi or tea length, it looks great with a cropped top. In this case, the skirt gives the illusion of miles of legs, especially when paired with heels. Skip the heels for bare feet and you have a stunning beach wedding outfit.

There are also cuts with asymmetrical hems (see photos below) or ruffles.

My love for tulle skirts started early

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved figure skating wear, ballroom dresses, and tutus. As a kid, I also adored the skirts introduced by Dior in the 1950s. I was fascinated that the petticoats kept the skirt away from the body. I made figure skating and petticoat skirts for my dolls and wished to be a living Barbie doll.

Of course I wanted to take ballet lessons or learn figure skating. The dresses adorned with tutus and sequins were definitely reasons for wanting. Instead, my parents signed me up for physical education and self-defense classes. I didn’t like these courses at all. I especially hated the self-defense course. My parents wanted me to attend class so I could stop the bullies who bullied me at school. But they were all in this class! Therefore, the lessons gave them even more chances and I even more contact with them.

Instead of the figure skating shoes I had on my wish list for Christmas, I got ice skates! I was so disappointed! In the Rhineland, where I grew up, there isn’t snow every winter. Therefore, like roller skates, the slides were made in the late 1960s, early 1970s. They were extendable to customize the fit for multiple years. Do I have to say I only used them once? At that time, they had to be lengthened to match, which made the slide fun not at all fun!

To mimic the tulle skirt look, I sewed myself a circle skirt when I was a teenager. While the huge amount of fabric at the hem made the skirt stand out a bit, it wasn’t the look I loved. On the contrary, I found circle skirts didn’t look good on me at all. So the skirt more or less stayed in the closet and later ended up with Goodwill. Well, clothes that don’t flatter your body shape is just one reason why you never wear some of your beautiful clothes, right?

Dancing brought the retro style and tulle petticoat

When I was in grad school, I bought my first petticoat. I sometimes wore it under a homemade 50’s skirt during my rock ‘n roll practices (see the post at the link for a photo of this skirt). I still like retro dresses inspired by the 1950s.

My knack for the tulle and fishnet skirt look is still alive. I love how they shape, change the look of the body, how they move. You are so feminine. I love being a woman. I just wear the skirt, and not just on the dance floor.

If you enjoy the blog, you may also want to purchase my style recipe book, How to Dress for Success in Midlife. Buy It Now.

What to wear with a tulle skirt?

The piece is easiest to style in nude, white or very light neutral pastels like pale pink, light grey, light blue or beige. It can easily dress up a plain t-shirt.

If you are a die-hard romantic

A pastel tulle skirt is a must-have for romantics. A denim jacket is a perfect combination that will keep the romantic vibe of the look. Just think of Rene Russo in the stands at the final baseball game playing Jake Taylor’s ex-girlfriend Lynn Weslin in the 1989 film Major League. Her blonde, curly long hair, the white lace dress and the blue denim jacket are pure romance. Ballet flats are the best choice for the shoes.

Combine it with the classic gingham shirt Romantic in spring and autumn. In winter, try a beaded cashmere sweater or wear a lace collar cardigan as a top.

Or go the pastel ballerina route and stick with the ballet-like colors as in the inspiration with the pale pink slingbacks and gray cashmere silk sweater in the next few photos. Since wool legwarmers are common in ballet, fall can wear a fishnet skirt with gray tights, a long-sleeved top, and flats. Layer a half pair of briefs underneath for extra warmth.

The different price ranges of the articles make the outfit down-to-earth. The pastel coloring makes it very summery and feminine. More about wearing romantic style over 50 in the guide under the link.

Rock’n’Roll

A tulle skirt in a striking color like blue or red creates a more edgy street-chic vibe. So if you are a rock and roll girl, try a graphic t-shirt, red tulle, ankle boots with or without a black leather motorcycle jacket. Swap the graphic tee for a plaid shirt, striped top, or denim shirt.

drama queen

An outfit with black tulle bottoms, black lace top, sky high heels, updo, red lips and jewelry like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and updo works well for a femme fatale vibe for a night out. A variation for every day: red skirt, black (lace) top, heels, large sunglasses.

Friday evening means going out, leaving the stress of the week behind, relaxing and recharging your batteries for the next week. A perfect weekend starts with dressing up, eating out and dancing the night away. This outfit is one of my favorites to start the weekend with.

Start your weekend wearing what you want to wear! #tutu #weekendstyle Click to tweet

Holiday season

Try a white classic tutu version with a red sweater, tights and red pumps for a Christmas party.

Eclectic style

The eclectic style mixes everything with everything and combines it with the accessories, colors, … in search of what looks “fake” best. See the examples in the next photos.

Or try an elegant layered version like Leandra Medine with a striped sweater over skinnies.

Gamine style

A white skirt just above the knee styled with old-school canvas paired with a black and white or blue and white striped top is a great option if you love the gamine style.

street chic

The photos below show a nude tea-length skirt styled with an abstract floral print boxy top (and a denim jacket) and colorful strappy sandals. Summery style to compete with the flowers. lol

The next example shows a totally neutral street style look.

How to style a tulle skirt over 50

This super feminine piece suits many styles and for many occasions, even a wedding or a Christmas party. Elegant versions in light neutrals or pastels are easier to style over 50 than those in crayon shades. The former colors are namely feminine and elegant.

The main takeaway message is that you can wear a tulle skirt at any age.

By the way, you can find the review of this skirt by Lily Lulu in the post under the link.
