Human emotions are priceless. I’m not going to preach about being careful about crying, but let’s face it. You cry when you’re not in control of things, and it’s a pretty normal thing.

So, my dear! If you feel like crying with extensions, do so. You will feel better and if these are the tears of happiness then much better.

Now that we’ve got the traditional advice out of the way, let’s move on to damage control. I will discuss different types of false eyelashes in this post.

Fixing glued false eyelashes

Starting with temporary stick-on false eyelashes, they are the ones that cause the most problems with falling off. They are cheaply made and in addition very poor quality glue is used to hold them in place.

The problem gets worse when you rub your eyes. Even eyelash extensions would fall off if rubbed.

If you wear these eyelash extensions, then take a paper napkin and dab the tears from the corners of your eyes. If you’ve already cried, check to see if they’re there. After that, use some temporary glue on the cotton swab to strengthen them again after drying. Just a tiny little amount.

You should always have a paper napkin and glue for these types of scenarios when wearing these lashes.

Now if you are planning to use them for a wedding or an event, make sure you have a quality set of waterproof glue false eyelashes. They can take a few hits before falling down.

Next come magnetic false eyelashes. They are locked in place by magnets so tears will not affect them. They come in two types. One is magnetic pairs and the other is using magnetic eyeliner. Both remain fairly unaffected by wet or tears unless you go swimming in them.

They are a cheaper option than temporary adhesives and should be considered instead. The caveat here is that you may need to practice putting them on. Eyelash extensions are the best of the bunch. Not only do they look beautiful, they are also very easy to care for. They’re also the most expensive of the three because they require a highly trained lash technician to apply them, hair by hair, to your lashes.

Crying in eyelash extensions is pretty safe once you’ve passed the lashes’ curing stage. The curing time depends on the glue used. Some high quality eyelash glues will set within seconds.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that salt in your tears will make the glue brittle. They may have less retention if you don’t clean them with your detergent right away. Lower retention means you need to book your fill-ins faster, but even they may not be directly affected. If you are planning to have them for your wedding then they are the best choice.

After crying, eyelash extensions may become slightly out of shape or clump like your natural eyelashes. You have to brush them to raise them up. They’re actually pretty easy to set up; All you need is a spoolie brush and you’re good to go.

Can you cry with eyelash extensions?

Your eyelash extensions are mostly waterproof unless you get mink lashes.

So you don’t have to worry about crying when the eyelash glue is completely dry. But that doesn’t mean you can forget about it and expect eyelash extensions to stay intact for as long as you’re used to.

If you want them to be beautiful in the long run, especially if you have a habit of crying frequently, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Crying after your eyelash extension appointment

You should not cry right after eyelash extensions as any kind of wetness during the treatment period can affect the hold of your eyelash extensions.[1]

Because it takes at least four hours after application for the bond made by the eyelash glue to bond your eyelash extensions to your natural lashes, it’s best to stay away from crying and situations that could lead to crying (if possible) during this time.

For all the brides out there, be mindful if you’re getting eyelash extensions a few hours before your wedding. This is especially important if you believe the wedding will be a celebration of wine, whether you will be crying with happiness or sadness.

Apart from that, crying is mostly an involuntary reaction. Therefore, you cannot always avoid it. You can also cry after the curing time of the eyelash glue without worrying.

Just remember to cleanse your lashes right after crying to remove any oil and salt left over from your tears. Salt and oil are solvents that can weaken eyelash glue over time.

We’ll cover how to clean your eyelash extensions after crying a little later in this article.

Crying during your eyelash extension appointment

Eyelash lengthening is a painless procedure and should not cause any discomfort if done correctly.

From my experience, there are two common reasons a client might shed tears during an eyelash appointment.

sensitivity to light. Eyelash artists use high-intensity lighting to get a good view of your eyelashes when applying eyelash extensions. For some customers, this can cause discomfort and easy tearing. In such cases, your eyelash stylist should simply reduce the lighting a little. formaldehyde fumes. If the customer accidentally opens their eyes slightly, formaldehyde fumes can enter the eyes. This irritates the eyes and can cause tears. Formaldehyde is a byproduct of the curing process of cyanoacrylate, the binder of eyelash glue. It is important to remind the client to keep their eyes closed at all times during the procedure.

In both cases, the eyelash stylist should dry the eyelashes immediately.

If the stylist continues to work with wet eyelashes, the eyelash glue hardens too quickly, becomes brittle and the customer has problems with durability.

Keep in mind that moisture will speed up the curing process, but too much moisture too quickly is a big no-go.

Why do tears break eyelash glue?

Tears are extremely important to the body as they are one of the best weapons your immune system uses to prevent infection. They do this by washing away irritants and foreign particles that get into the eye.[2]

Crying may seem like wetting eyelash extensions, but it’s very different. It is recommended to wet your eyelash extensions during your daily cleaning routine to maintain a healthy lash line and avoid problems like eyelash mites.

However, in addition to salt and fatty oils, tears also contain electrolytes (potassium, sodium, chloride) and thousands of proteins.[3]

The biological reason tear glands produce oils in addition to water is so the tears don’t dry too quickly so the eyes stay moist for a long time.

To be honest, water is not the enemy when it comes to crying with eyelash extensions. It is the combination of salt and oil that is prevalent in natural tears that can break down the lash glue that binds the lash extensions to the natural lashes.

Because eyelash extension glue is made from a chemical called cyanoacrylate, you should avoid salt and oil on your eyelashes. Both are solvents that can weaken the bond of your extensions.

How to clean eyelash extensions after crying?

Crying is one of the most normal things, and according to statistics, women cry about six times a month and 72 times a year.[4]

The good news is that after the four-hour curing time is up, you can cry as much as you want.

However, it is important to clean your eyelash extensions after crying using the following steps to remove the oil and salt that has built up on your eyelashes from your tears.

Pump out the eyelash shampoo provided by your stylist in your hands. Put the shampoo foam on your eyelashes. Let it cover your lashes to the lash line. Using a soft makeup brush, gently sweep up and down your lashes. Gently rinse your lashes with water running over your face. Avoid splashing or shooting water directly on your lashes. Dry your lashes with a hairdryer on a low and cool setting. Comb your lashes with a spoolie to get tangled lashes organized back to how they were originally.

What to think about when crying with eyelash extensions

Don’t rub your eyes

Crying isn’t a big problem unless you do it for too long or too often while wearing eyelash extensions.

The very first thing to remember if you experience watery eyes or cry too much while wearing eyelash extensions is mindfulness. That’s because most people end up rubbing and scrubbing their eyes hard when they cry.

Avoid rubbing your eyes harshly while crying. This allows the eyelash extensions to be pulled or pulled, making them easy to fall out.

Natural eyelashes also fall out when you cry a bucket for the same reason. If you need to dry tears, gently pat them dry instead.

Avoid sleeping with dry tears

Make sure you don’t sleep without cleaning your eyes. Dried tears = concentrated salt and oil on your false eyelash extensions. Sleeping with eyelash extensions is very different.[5]

1. Brushing your eyelash extensions causes discomfort

If this happens, it’s a sure sign that too much glue has been used and your lashes may be stuck together. This can damage and break the eyelashes. You should be able to easily brush your lashes daily without discomfort. Too much glue means poor insulation of your lashes during application.

Solution: I suggest finding another eyelash technician!

2. Your eyelash extensions sting, twist and irritate your eyes

This happens when an eyelash extension has not been properly attached to your natural lash or the extensions are too long causing the extension to twist, twist, droop and twist. This means that your extensions will fit well in every way and will catch your eye at the same time. No fun! Eyelashes should always be comfortable to wear.

Solution: I suggest asking for a shorter length next time or finding another eyelash technician.

3. Your inner lash extensions are too long and look unnatural

This is because the lash technician uses extensions that are too long for such a short section of natural lashes. Using lashes that are too long on the inner corner creates a very fake look that is not what you want. Eyelashes should always look believable, natural and beautiful.

Solution: Next time, ask for shorter lashes in the inner eye area. If your lash technician doesn’t want to do this for you, then find another.

4. Your extensions are all one length from the inner to the outer eye

This happens when the lash technician hasn’t thought about the shape of your eyes or what will suit you best when applying your lashes. Use a mixture of 2-3 or more lash lengths to avoid making your lashes look like you’ve applied a cheap fake lash strip. Your eyelashes should always match your eye shape.

Solution: Personally, I would look for another eyelash stylist – a lack of attention to detail when styling my eyelashes would be a deal breaker for me!

5. The application process burns your eyes long after it’s over!

Many new customers have told me that they have had bad experiences with adhesive fumes that burn their eyes severely during and after application. One client told me she got into her car after her lashes were applied and had to sit while she blew on the air conditioner to stop the stinging. That’s not normal! Slight tearing of the eyes may occur, but constant discomfort afterwards is uncommon – the process should be relaxing, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Solution: Always let your eyelash extension technician know if anything bothers you during the application. It may be that your eyes are not closed properly, the eye pad is rubbing against your eyes, or the adhesive is not of good quality.

6. Your eyelash extensions only last a week!

This often happens when not enough eyelash extensions have been applied. If you think you’ve found the cheapest technician, then chances are they won’t spend enough time during the appointment to create a long-lasting, full lash effect. A good lash application should last 1.5-2+ hours. A full set of lashes should mean applying them to all of your natural lashes (those that are long enough).

An application of less than 1.5 hours and you are likely to get a quick treatment that will show wear and tear within a week. After 2 weeks all your lashes will be gone. Remember that you will naturally lose 2-5 lashes a day, so do the math.

Keep in mind that if your natural lashes are very sparse, delicate, and fragile, your extensions may not last as long as other people’s. Unfortunately, lashes can only accentuate what you naturally have.

Eyelash extensions can last more than 3 weeks with proper care and great application. Refills are recommended every 2-4 weeks to keep your lashes looking full. The time between fills always depends on your lash care routine, your natural lash cycle and the number of lashes you have to work with.

NOTE: Following the at-home care instructions is key to the durability of your lashes. Always follow this advice.

Solution: Book a longer appointment/refill or select a new technician who will give the time spent on their appointments.

7. Your lashes aren’t extensions, they’re lash extensions or cluster lashes

This is the worst kind of “eyelash extensions”. Clusters or flares should never be applied with permanent eyelash glue. Eyelash breakage and infection are common when eyelash flares are applied, not to mention the appearance is not desirable since your lashes will look more like spiders than the pretty, luscious lashes you are supposed to have.

What can’t you do after an eyelash lift?

A lash lift perms and curls your natural lashes so you can show them off and feel great! Another great thing about an eyelash lift is that it is a very low maintenance procedure. However, a little extra care is only needed for the first 24-48 hours. Here’s what you shouldn’t do to make the results last longer: Be careful not to get your lashes wet

What are we going to do with the hair?

Let’s understand the hair structure and what we do with it. Hair is made up of protein chains held together by physical and chemical bonds. Eyelash extensions are a high-maintenance beauty treatment. They require very gentle care in order for the lashes to last longer and stay in good condition.

Keep your eyelash extensions dry for 4-6 hours after your appointment.

You can wash your face in the sink with a washcloth, avoiding the eye area.

Keep all oil-based products away from your eyes and remember that anything on your face gets into the eye area.

Oil WILL break down the glue and you will have premature loss of eyelash extensions.

Your hands can get dirty and dirt is oily, so you should keep your fingers off your eyes unless you’re cleaning them.

Eyelash tinting must be done 24-48 hours prior to your eyelash refill appointment.

No perm for the eyelashes!

No saunas, facials or swimming within 4-6 hours of application.

Don’t stick your head in the oven while baking! It can singe your extensions! Turn your head away from the oven when putting something in or pulling something out.

Do not use an eyelash curler.

You should be careful and pay special attention to makeup and remover.

Do not use cotton for your eyelash extensions.

Wash your lashes daily (after the first 4-6 hours). Apply the oil-free makeup remover with your fingers and gently rub over the lashes.

Or you can apply oil-free makeup remover to your lashes with a disposable wand of mascara. Spray onto wand, brush gently through lashes and rinse with warm water.

Mascara should be washable and not waterproof.

1) We do not attach aircraft parts! Aggressive behavior towards the eyelashes will cause the eyelash extensions to come off.

2) Keep them dry for 4-6 hours after applying. If you’re wearing eyeshadow and liner, you’ll need to leave them on or reapply them.

3) Keep oil off your lashes, including oil off your fingers.

4) If you wash them, you will wear them longer. Be sure to cleanse daily to remove oils.

5) Brushing solves most problems. Try brushing the lashes gently if you notice something is wrong.

Let me ask you all beautiful ladies a question. What’s worse, crying after eyelash extensions or crying as a whole?

I know crying is pretty much out of our control, but don’t let the fear of messing up your lash line get the better of you.

So if you’re looking for an answer then yes, crying can mess up your eyelash extensions. The most important thing to understand here is the curing time of your eyelash glue and its quality. Once it has set it may not have much of an effect, but if your eyelash glue is yet to set you may have retention issues.

Eyelash glue vs. water, salts and oil

The quality of eyelash extensions depends on two things. The skill of your eyelash artist and the quality of the material used. If there is a problem with any of them, you may face problems. The biggest factor affecting the durability of a kit is the quality of the eyelash glue.

Poor quality eyelash glue cannot cause skin allergies, it would not be strong enough to last the full cycle. It is also more susceptible to environmental influences such as water, oils and salts.

All three can be found in your tears. Poor quality eyelash glue and tears don’t mix.

Assuming all of these factors are in your favour. You have received quality extensions from an experienced technician, then the last important factor is the curing time of the eyelash glue.

Most reputable eyelash artists these days use fast-curing eyelash glue. These adhesives can cure in minutes, so there is no error window here.

But if your lash artist uses adhesives that take 24 to 48 hours to cure (even some good ones still use them), then you may risk shock curing while crying.

Shock curing (or flash curing) is when your glue has had too much moisture and cures too quickly. The glue often turns white and cracks because it hasn’t had enough time to form a strong bond.

If you have some trouble understanding here, let me explain it from the beginning.

Eyelash glue combines with water in the air to form a strong adhesive that holds your eyelash extensions to your natural lash hairs. Some adhesives are slow to absorb water while others require little water and time. Eyelash technicians often maintain recommended humidity levels in their work area to speed up this process.

When the glue has set it doesn’t absorb much water and even if you splash water on it it won’t affect it. But when it’s just setting, it can bond with too much water, weakening the bond.

Crying, saunas, showers or baths can add too much water to the glue. So you might want to try and stay away from these for the amount of time your technician recommends.

Tears add a whole new dimension of the problem to the equation. Eyelash glue is a cyanoacrylate based glue (think superglue). Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are sensitive to salt and oil.

Remember the salt lifehack for loosening your fingers. Yes it works. Unfortunately, it also works with your eyelash extensions.

Salts and oils in your tears (tears are salty, you know it!) weaken your lash glue. If you ignore all other factors, you’ll have poor retention time and may have to sign up for fill-ins earlier than expected if you cry.

Crying might not be the worst thing you can do. Crying once or twice is perfectly fine, and some eyelash artists even say it doesn’t matter. And they are right. However, rubbing your eyes while crying can really and royally mess up your eyelash extensions.

We all know that crying can be a very emotional time for all of us and we often have no control over when that happens. But don’t rub your eyes. If you do that, even your technician might not be able to help you.

Last thing here is that your lash technique isn’t that great or you accidentally got too much lash glue on your extensions. The glue forms a blob and you have a blister with cured glue on the outside and uncured on the inside.

When you cry, the thin layer of outer cured glue weakens and the tears can reach the inner uncured glue. This in turn leads to shock hardening which gives a very poor retention time.

I hope you are sobered enough to ask this question. You have my full support for whatever reason you were crying but let’s do a little health check here.

scenario 1

If you’re outside the cure window and haven’t rubbed your eyes, you’re probably fine. Check your extensions in the mirror. Some of them might be out of shape. Dry, clean and brush them. Set up their shape with a brush or hair dryer.

You’re out of the cure window and rubbing your eyes. Check yourself again and see if there is too much damage. If you just messed up their shape, then congratulations. If you find that you are missing some or some of them are dangling, contact your eyelash artist. Tell them the exact problem. Being honest and polite here can work wonders.

If your extensions fall off, it’s better to cut them with sharp, rounded scissors (careful!). Otherwise don’t pick at them, you don’t have natural lashes to glue extensions on.

The worst case. If you are in the curing window and even rubbed your eyes. Contact your lash artist and let them know. They guide you to the best possible solution. If your technician allows it, send them a picture of your lash line. Don’t trample yourself by lying to her. It’s actually pretty easy to see.

What to expect

Unless physical pulling on cured eyelash extensions is required, there’s not much to worry about. You may need to top up a week early, but that’s all there is to it.

But if pulling occurs or the lash glue hasn’t set, your artist may even ask you to pay again for a full set. Be polite and they can help you as much as they can.

I know most of you girls have a do’s and don’ts list from your lash technician, but here are some one-line reminders. If you want to go a little deeper, check out my other article on drying your eyelash extensions.

DOS

Wash your extensions daily with a water-based lash shampoo or cleanser. Use them correctly. Brush them daily. Dry them only by gently patting

Don’ts

Don’t rub your eyes. Don’t try to sleep on your stomach. Never use oil-based makeup near your lash line. Do not use salt or oil based product

Eyelash extensions and lifts are amazing ways to enhance your look by adding volume, length, darkness and curl to your natural lashes! Eyelash extensions are small, hair-like synthetic fibers that are dipped in medical-grade glue and carefully applied to each individual lash to give you beautiful thickness and length. Lash lift is a maintenance-free chemical service that creates a lifted, wide-eyed look by adding curl to your natural lashes that lasts for weeks.

Do not spray tan 48 hours before your lash appointment.

Avoid caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks) prior to your appointment as this will make the artist’s work more difficult. Enjoy the opportunity to take a few moments of your day to comfortably relax and be pampered.

Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment. Please remember to wear your glasses.

Do not curl your eyelashes for at least 3 days before your treatment and do not wear waterproof cosmetics. Waterproof products will dry and leave a waxy barrier on lashes no matter how well they are washed.

Please come to your appointment with clean eyes and all eye make-up removed. Any eye makeup or residue will prevent a secure connection for extensions and an inability to properly penetrate the lashes for a lift. If you come to your appointment with debris on your lashes, a portion of your total appointment time will be deducted for the pre-treatment clean, which can result in subpar results.

Do not let your lashes get wet or apply cosmetics for 24 hours after the lash lift as this will neutralize the chemical process and leave you with flat lashes. These include showers, saunas, steam, sweating, and crying.

Gently cleanse your lashes daily with Beauty Lab approved products. Be sure to clean between the lashes and along the lash line where the lashes meet the lid. Make sure you remove all eye makeup, dirt, oil, dead skin cells and debris before rinsing.

Keep your lashes looking clean and tidy by gently brushing through with a disposable mascara wand in the morning after wetting them and generally as needed.

Do not use mascara or waterproof makeup on eyelash extensions. If you like using eyeliner, we recommend liquid liner or a damp angled brush dipped in dark eyeshadow. Gel and pencil eyeliners are not recommended as they can shorten the life of your extensions.

Don’t pick, pull, tug, rub or aggressively sleep on your eyelash extensions. This may result in premature loss or damage. Eyelash masks are available for the wild sleepers!

All makeup, makeup removers, cleansers, creams, serums, lotions and treatments around the eye area must be OIL FREE.

If you’ve been an eyelash artist for a while, then you’ve probably gotten a call from a client complaining of stinging eyes in the shower. Typically 9 times out of 10 the client thinks that the eyelash glue is reactivating and causing the irritation. However, this is not the case!

Here’s why…

Once the adhesive has set, it bonds to the lashes and is non-reactive. Vapors are present only when the adhesive is in liquid form (when applying eyelash extensions). Once the glue has cured it becomes a polymer (a plastic), it hardens and therefore cannot be dissolved by water.

So the glue is not the cause of the stinging!

The cause of the stinging is actually a buildup of oils/debris on the skin’s surface. Our skin produces oils on a daily basis, and facial products and makeup all have residue. When water meets skin, these oils and residue can get into the eyes and cause irritation.

Because the eyelash extensions are placed 1mm from the lash line, there is room for oils/makeup etc to accumulate. Clients don’t always clean the area properly, so makeup and residue can build up around the lash line over time.

This is why customer aftercare is so important! Clients must wash their lashes daily with a lash cleanser and brush. A good aftercare routine is essential to keep lashes healthy. We have lots of aftercare advice for clients which you can read here. Feel free to send this blog to your customers!

In addition to customer aftercare, you can also implement post-lash cleaning. After completing the treatment, clean the lashes with Purified Cleanser and rinse well with distilled water. This can reduce irritation and help prevent the stinging sensation your clients may have after the lash appointment. Remember – cleaning after lash cleaning will NOT affect retention, it actually helps improve it!
