As a practicing artist using fiber as a medium, I am interested in the function and symbolism of fibers in traditional customs and cultures, as well as in traditional crafts. In this essay, I focus on the symbolic role of the length of the white cloth used in the ritual for the dead, called “kut” in Korea. Kut are not only symbolic expressions of the belief system, but also a deep source of cultural expression. In fact, Kut have been the main inspiration for the work of many artists, including my own work. I will present three ritual performances in kut in which the white cloth plays the leading role as a medium to pave a way into the other world.

1. About 10 yards of white cloth called Chilbe or Kilbe represents a path or bridge connecting this world and the next world. The shaman literally cuts cloth in half with her body by walking through it as if becoming the dead and leaving this world forever.

2. Seven to ten knots in a white cloth are untied by the shaman, who describes each of the knots as a sign of a bruise that the deceased spirit has buried. Untying the knots means releasing the dead person’s grievances.

3. When performing the ritual for a drowned person, a long cotton cloth provides a path for the soul to get from water to dry land.
