What is the real happiness of life?
True happiness is enjoying your own company and living in peace and harmony with your body, mind and soul. To be truly happy, you don’t need other people or material things. Happiness is the consequence of personal effort and living a life of purpose.
Drew Barrymore Quote: “I think happiness is what makes you pretty. Period. Happy people are beautiful. They become like a mirror and they refle…”
The struggle for true happiness is a daily struggle for many people, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or poor. Therefore, in essence, wealth does not guarantee happiness. So what does it mean? To understand this, Saturday PUNCH asked a cross section of Nigerians to define happiness and here are their answers:
Self Love – Olakunle Matimoju Anthony
True happiness means different things to different people. Some might say that it comes with true love; others might say it has to do with owning all that the world has to offer. However, in my view, true happiness lies in being in love with yourself. For example, when life issues arise, a person who is at peace with themselves would easily find a solution because of their state of mind.
Some of the other things that can guarantee true happiness are a happy, content, and understanding woman; a good job and a good relationship with your creator.
Living for Others – Samuel Folorunsho
True happiness is being at peace with the Creator after fulfilling divine purpose on earth. When I touch life or someone smiles just because of me, I’m happy. True happiness is the inner satisfaction you have when you know someone out there is enjoying a privilege that is due to my contribution and efforts in their life. There are examples of people who have done this; Some of them were Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa (Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu) and Helen Keller. They all lived such a life. True happiness is found in living for others and not just for yourself.
Accept everything about me – Ugwu Emmanuel
True happiness means accepting everything about yourself; Height, weight, skin color, family, society, country and everything around me. I’ve always learned to be happy in any situation; I also try to share my happiness with people around me. Nowadays many people have committed suicide due to lack of luck. When we are disappointed by people we trust or believe in, that causes unhappiness. When we fail to accomplish a certain goal or task, it also causes dissatisfaction. The things that will really make me happy are the little things that I appreciate, like a family, having someone who really loves me for who I am, and after a long search, getting a new job.
Value what I have – promised Okeke
True happiness is valuing what I have. Having N10m in my account does not guarantee my happiness. Some people have so much and still pray to God for more.
Seeing Beyond the Physical – Ayion Ahmed Allen
True happiness does not come from having everything. It won’t get because of people around you or because you see that everything is working fine for you.
True happiness does not come from having all your needs met or all your intentions accomplished. True happiness is a feeling.
It’s an immersive feeling that everything is fine inside. It’s not just about wealth or prosperity; it is a state of mind in which one has the fulfilling and satisfying feeling that one’s heart is truly at rest. Happiness is more or less a fantasy of the mind. It is there and yet hidden. It is a measure of your life associated with feeling light, free, restful and not overwhelmed. It’s about the amount of your problems carried away by a moment of feeling. True happiness is not just happiness. It’s not just peace, it’s not just joy. These things have a cause for them. They have things or people that they make happen. True happiness is just there. It’s that peace you get when you’re in trouble. It’s that joy you get when you’re grieving. It is this happiness that appears even in the midst of a crisis.
True happiness may be a fantasy, but it is a real fantasy. Only those who open their minds to see beyond what their eyes can see will have it.
Watching My Son Grow – Ayankoya Omowunmi
True happiness comes from within; it’s about being at peace with myself.
I think it makes me happy to see my son grow up to be a respectful and successful man in a society that doesn’t value single mothers. Money is important too, some people call it the root of all evil, but I would say when used for the best things it is the root of all good. With the right investments and the right financial management, I will achieve a lot.
True happiness also means giving back to humanity: there are many children who do not go to school and cannot even boast of a skill. I would like to educate children up to university entrance or at least encourage them to a vocation. You can do that with money.
Enjoy your company – Folawiyo Tamarapreye Grace
True happiness enjoys one’s own company and lives in peace and harmony with body, mind and spirit. To be truly happy you don’t need other people or material things. Happiness is the result of personal effort and a purposeful life. People enter into relationships or marriages because they seek happiness in their partner, and suddenly when they fight, all happiness is gone.
Small things make me happy – Kikanwa Onukwu Ijeh
Happiness is cheap and free, and you can actually create your own happiness.
It takes very little things to make me happy. If I’m healthy, have a family that loves me, few good friends, food on my table, a roof over my head and clothes on my body, then I’m a happy woman. I don’t need to have all the money in the world to be happy; Wealth doesn’t bring happiness.
Be content – Eze Lilian
True happiness for me is when one is content and content. Money is one of the things that can bring happiness. Life without money can be frustrating. Using myself as an example, I have an internal disease and no money to treat it, and I feel unhappy when I have a seizure. I’m comfortable with money because I can afford what makes life comfortable. Second, to be in good health; it makes me happy, especially when i go to the hospital and see other patients.
Pleasing God – Nimah Yusuff
True happiness is pleasing God and being content with what He has given me. Constant gratitude to God creates happiness. Every dawn brings me joy. Whenever I am able to observe the salat (religious obligation for Muslims) at the appointed time; it makes me happy. Seeing other people happy makes me happy too. I enjoy hearing other people’s success stories.

Happiness is something people seek to find, but what defines happiness can vary from person to person. When most people talk about the true meaning of happiness, they may be talking about how they are feeling in the present moment or referring to a more general sense of how they feel about life in general.
Happiness Definition: Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. While happiness has many different definitions, it is often described as involving positive emotions and life satisfaction.
Because happiness is such a broad term, psychologists and other social scientists typically use the term “subjective well-being” when discussing this emotional state. As it sounds, subjective well-being tends to focus on a person’s overall personal feelings about their life in the present.
Two key components of happiness (or subjective well-being) are:
The Balance of Emotions: Everyone experiences both positive and negative emotions, feelings, and moods. Happiness is generally associated with experiencing more positive feelings than negative ones.
Everyone experiences both positive and negative emotions, feelings and moods. Happiness is generally associated with experiencing more positive feelings than negative ones. Life Satisfaction: This refers to how satisfied you are with various areas of your life, including your relationships, work, accomplishments, and other things you consider important.
Another definition of happiness comes from the ancient philosopher Aristotle, who suggested that happiness is the only human desire and all other human desires serve to attain happiness. He believed that there are four levels of happiness: happiness through instant gratification, through comparison and achievement, through positive contributions, and through attaining fulfillment.
Happiness, Aristotle suggested, could be achieved through the golden mean, which involves finding a balance between scarcity and abundance.
sign of happiness
While perceptions of happiness can vary from person to person, there are some key signs that psychologists look for when measuring and evaluating happiness.
Some key signs of happiness are:
The feeling of living the life you wanted
Going with the flow and willing to take life as it comes
The feeling that the conditions of your life are good
Enjoying positive, healthy relationships with other people
The feeling that you have achieved (or will achieve) what you want in life
Feeling satisfied with his life
Feeling more positive than negative
Be open to new ideas and experiences
Practice self-care and treat yourself with kindness and compassion
experience gratitude
The feeling that you are living life with meaning and purpose
want to share your happiness and joy with others
One important thing to remember is that happiness is not a state of constant euphoria. Instead, happiness is a general feeling of experiencing more positive emotions than negative ones.
Happy people still experience the full range of human emotions — anger, frustration, boredom, loneliness, and even sadness — from time to time. But even when faced with discomfort, they have an underlying optimism that things will get better, that they can deal with what is happening, and that they can feel happy again.
types of happiness
There are many different ways to think about happiness. For example, the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle distinguished between two different types of happiness: hedonia and eudaimonia.
Hedonia: Hedonian happiness comes from pleasure. It is most commonly associated with doing what feels good, taking care of yourself, fulfilling desires, experiencing joy, and feeling a sense of contentment.
Hedonic happiness comes from enjoyment. It is most commonly associated with doing what feels good, taking care of yourself, fulfilling desires, experiencing joy, and feeling a sense of contentment. Eudaimonia: This type of happiness comes from the search for virtue and meaning. Important components of eudaemonic well-being, including feeling that your life has meaning, value, and purpose. It is more associated with fulfilling responsibilities, investing in long-term goals, caring about the well-being of others, and living up to personal ideals.
Hedonia and eudemony are more commonly known in psychology today as pleasure and meaning, respectively. More recently, psychologists have suggested adding the third component, related to engagement. These are feelings of involvement and participation in different areas of life.
Research suggests that happy people tend to score fairly high on eudaimonic life satisfaction and above average on hedonic life satisfaction.
All of these can play an important role in the overall experience of happiness, although the relative worth of each can be highly subjective. Some activities can be both pleasurable and meaningful, while others can skew more one way or the other.
For example, volunteering for a cause you believe in can be more meaningful than enjoyable. On the other hand, watching your favorite TV show might have a lower priority and a higher enjoyment.
Some types of happiness that can fall under these three main categories are:
Joy: An often relatively brief emotion felt in the present moment
An often relatively brief emotion felt in the present moment. Excitement: A happy feeling of looking forward to something with positive anticipation
A happy feeling where you look forward to something with positive anticipation. Gratitude: A positive emotion of being grateful and appreciative
A positive emotion that includes gratitude and appreciation. Pride: A sense of satisfaction with something you have accomplished
A sense of satisfaction with something you have achieved Optimism: This is a way of looking at life with a positive, optimistic attitude
This is a way of looking at life with a positive, optimistic attitude. Contentment: This type of happiness involves a sense of contentment
How to cultivate happiness
While some people are naturally happier, there are things you can do to cultivate happiness.
Pursue intrinsic goals
Achieving goals that you are intrinsically motivated to pursue, especially those centered on personal growth and community, can help increase happiness. Research suggests that pursuing these types of intrinsically motivated goals can increase happiness more than pursuing extrinsic goals like money or status.
Enjoy the moment
Studies have found that people tend to earn too much – they get so focused on accumulating things that they lose track of actually enjoying what they are doing.
So instead of falling into the trap of mindlessly accumulating to the detriment of your own happiness, focus on practicing gratitude for the things you have and enjoying the process as you progress.
Reframe negative thoughts
If you’re stuck in a pessimistic attitude or experiencing negativity, look for ways to make your thoughts more positive.
People have a natural negativity bias, or a tendency to pay more attention to bad things than to good things. This can affect everything from the way you make decisions to how you perceive other people. Neglecting the positive—a cognitive distortion in which people focus on the negative and ignore the positive—can also contribute to negative thoughts.
Restating these negative perceptions does not mean ignoring the bad. Instead, it means trying to take a more balanced, realistic view of events. It allows you to spot patterns in your thinking and then challenge negative thoughts.
influence of luck
Why is happiness so important? Happiness has been shown to predict positive outcomes in many different areas of life, including mental well-being, physical health, and overall longevity.
Positive emotions increase life satisfaction.
Happiness helps people build stronger coping skills and emotional resources.
Positive emotions are associated with better health and longevity. One study found that people who experienced more positive than negative emotions were more likely to have survived a 13-year period.
Positive feelings increase resilience. Resilience helps people cope better with stress and recover better when faced with setbacks. For example, one study found that happier people tend to have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and that these benefits persist over time.
People who report positive well-being are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors, such as eating fruits and vegetables and engaging in regular physical activity.
Being happy can help you get sick less often. Happier mental states are associated with increased immunity.
How to become a happier person
Some people seem to have a naturally higher baseline for happiness — a large study of more than 2,000 twins found that about 50% of overall life satisfaction is due to genetics, 10% to external events, and 40% to individual activities.
While you may not be able to control your “baseline” level of happiness, there are things you can do to make your life happier and more fulfilling. Even the happiest of people can feel down from time to time, and happiness is something all people must consciously strive for.
Cultivate strong relationships
Social support is an essential part of well-being. Research has found that good social relationships are the strongest predictor of happiness. Positive and supportive connections with people you care about can provide a buffer against stress, improve your health, and help you become a happier person.
In the Harvard Study of Adult Development, a longitudinal study that looked at participants over the age of 80, researchers found that relationships and how happy people are in those relationships have a powerful impact on overall health.
So if you’re trying to improve your happiness, maintaining solid social connections is a good place to start. Consider deepening your existing relationships and finding ways to make new friends.
Get regular exercise
Exercise is good for the body and mind. Physical activity is linked to a range of physical and psychological benefits, including improved mood. Numerous studies have shown that regular exercise can play a role in warding off symptoms of depression, but there’s also evidence that it can also help make people happier.
In an analysis of previous research on the link between physical activity and happiness, researchers found a consistently positive association.
Even a little exercise creates a happiness boost — people who got only 10 minutes of physical activity a day or who exercised only once a week were happier than people who never exercised.
Show gratitude
In one study, participants were asked to do a writing exercise for 10 to 20 minutes each night before bed. Some were instructed to write about everyday problems, others about neutral events, and still others about things they were grateful for. Results showed that people who wrote about gratitude increased positive emotions, increased subjective happiness, and improved life satisfaction.
As the study authors suggest, keeping a gratitude list is a relatively simple, affordable, easy, and enjoyable way to improve your mood. Try to take a few minutes each night to write down or reflect on things in your life that you are grateful for.
Find a sense of purpose
Research has found that when people feel they have a purpose, they feel more comfortable and more fulfilled. A sense of purpose involves seeing your life as having purpose, direction, and meaning. It can help improve happiness by encouraging healthier behaviors.
Some things you can do to find meaning are:
Discover your interests and passions
Get involved in prosocial and altruistic causes
Work to fight injustice
Look for new things you might want to learn more about
This sense of purpose is influenced by a variety of factors, but it is also something you can cultivate. It’s about finding a goal that you care deeply about and that drives you to take productive, positive action to work toward that goal.

challenges to find happiness
While the search for happiness is important, there are times when the pursuit of life satisfaction falls short. Some challenges to watch out for are:
appreciation of the wrong things
Money may not buy happiness, but there are studies that show that spending money on things like experiences can make you happier than spending it on material possessions.
For example, one study found that spending money on things that buy time—like spending money on time-saving services—can increase happiness and life satisfaction.
Rather than overvaluing things like money, status, or material possessions, pursuing goals that lead to more free time or pleasurable experiences can have higher happiness rewards.
No seeking social support
Social support means having friends and family you can turn to for support. Research has found that perceived social support plays an important role in subjective well-being. For example, one study found that perceptions of social support are responsible for 43% of a person’s level of happiness.
It’s important to remember that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to social support. Having just a few very close and trusted friends will have a greater impact on your overall happiness than many casual acquaintances.
See happiness as the end point
Happiness is not a goal that can be easily reached and done. It is an ongoing pursuit that requires constant nurturing and nurturing.
One study found that people who value happiness the most also tend to feel the least satisfied with their lives. In essence, happiness becomes such a lofty goal that it becomes practically unattainable.
“Valuing happiness may be self-defeating because the more people value happiness, the more likely they are to be disappointed,” the study authors suggest.
Perhaps the lesson is to not make something as broad as “happiness” your goal. Instead, focus on building and cultivating the kinds of lives and relationships that bring fulfillment and satisfaction to your life.
It’s also important to consider how you personally define happiness. Happiness is a broad term that means different things to different people. Rather than looking at happiness as an endpoint, it may be more helpful to think about what happiness really means to you, and then work on small things that will help you become happier. This can make achieving those goals more manageable and less overwhelming.
history of happiness
Happiness has long been recognized as a crucial part of health and well-being. The “pursuit of happiness” is even mentioned as an inalienable right in the US Declaration of Independence. However, our understanding of what brings happiness has changed over time.
Psychologists have also come up with a number of different theories to explain how people experience and strive for happiness. These theories include:
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
The hierarchy of needs suggests that people are motivated to pursue increasingly complex needs. As more basic needs are met, people become motivated by more psychological and emotional needs.
At the top of the hierarchy is the need for self-actualization or the need to realize one’s full potential. The theory also emphasizes the importance of pinnacle experiences, or transcendent moments in which a person feels deep understanding, happiness, and joy.
Positive Psychology
The pursuit of happiness is at the heart of positive psychology. Psychologists who study positive psychology are interested in finding ways to increase positivity and help people live happier and more fulfilling lives.
Instead of focusing on mental pathologies, the field instead strives to find ways to help people, communities, and societies improve positive emotions and achieve greater happiness.

What is true happiness in the Bible?
The Good News: The only source of true happiness is the Lord. All of the things you receive in your life that give you happiness are because you believe in God. “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
Drew Barrymore Quote: “I think happiness is what makes you pretty. Period. Happy people are beautiful. They become like a mirror and they refle…”
There are so many inspirational Bible verses that can brighten your day when the dimmer switch is on and returning to that mental state of happiness seems so unattainable. You can read one, a few, or all of these powerful Bible quotes for yourself as a daily prayer routine, or you can even recite some of your favorite passages and share them with loved ones. Finally, there may be people in your life who appear cheerful on the outside but are actually going through it and need a few comforting Bible verses in their turn. These Bible verses about happiness do just that – and help you turn that frown on its head. And if you’re a ray of sunshine right now, these passages will only add to your joy.
