Today I’m sharing one of my favorite products ever: the Milkshake Silver Shampoo. I’ve been using this product for years and it just has to be said (in my opinion) this is the BEST purple shampoo for brassy blonde hair.

The color:

If you’re blonde, chances are you have brassy hair once, twice, or weekly. For my part, I struggle with brassy hair all the time. One of my biggest struggles with my blonde hair was keeping the brass at bay. People kept telling me to invest in a purple shampoo, and even when I did, I found it didn’t work. I sat for 5-10 minutes looking forward to seeing my new brassy free locks, only to wash out the recommended purple shampoo and find my hair was still super brassy. The reason my hair is so brassy (as my barber told me) is that my hair tends to pull reds, probably because I previously had dark hair and natural reds in my hair. Until I found a stylist who took a good look at my hair and told me how to get an ash shade of hair. She said that many purple shampoos are light purple and only slightly change the color of your hair. If you have a blonde that stubbornly clings to golden tones, you need a richer dark purple shampoo. That was the day I discovered MilkShake’s Silver Shampoo — and that was the day I stopped messing with brass-colored hair.

Unlike many other purple shampoos I’ve tried, MilkShake’s Silver shampoo is a true dark purple when squeezed out of the bottle.

In fact, it’s so dark that it can even stain your hands slightly if you don’t wash it off immediately after applying the shampoo to your hair.

How long should I leave the Milkshake Silver Shampoo on?

I use this shampoo once a week and leave it in for 5-10 minutes depending on how messy my hair is. If you’re nervous about leaving it on that long, just leave it on for a few minutes and see how your hair looks.

I’ve found that when I’m traveling and the water is harder/or different than my hair, it needs to sit a little longer.

However, when I’m at home, I usually apply MilkShake’s Silver shampoo for just 5 minutes to achieve a softer, mess-free blonde.

Since my hair is also a darker blonde color, it sometimes takes longer for the brassy tones to really go away. Lighter blondes may find that they only need to leave these on for a few short minutes for them to work on their hair. Or, better yet, invest in the light version so the purple shampoo doesn’t turn your hair purple or gray. One thing to know about this purple shampoo is that it can turn your hair really purple or gray if you leave it on for a long time. This will fade and your normal color will return after a few days and washes.

As the purple/grey hair look has become popular, many people use MilkShake’s Silver Shampoo to turn their hair from blonde to silvery gray. To achieve that silvery look, you usually need to leave the purple shampoo on for at least 12 minutes.

If my hair is a darker blonde, I use the regular Milkshake Silver Shampoo. But when my hair is very light (like the other day when we were in Greece) I switch to the light version. I have found that regular Milkshake Silver Shampoo can turn my hair purple when my hair is a lighter white blonde, especially if left on for the recommended length of time.
