So, after much discussion, you have finally chosen your new fragrance – good! But now you’re stuck with an eau de parfum (EDP) in one hand and an eau de toilette (EDT) in the other, and you haven’t the faintest idea which one to pick. what should a girl do

Learning the lingo will help you make your decision easier. The terms EDT and EDP are different types of scents and actually mean something very specific – they’re not just fancy French words! And they give a great indication of the perfume’s intensity, price and longevity.

The difference between perfume and toilet explained

Fragrance specialist Samantha Taylor of The Powder Room says that the main difference between eau de toilette and perfume and an eau de toilette has to do with the concentration of perfume in each fragrance. Basically, an eau de parfum is a stronger perfume than an eau de toilette because its concentration of oils is higher.

“The only difference between an eau de parfum and an eau de toilette is the amount of ‘juice’ or perfume concentrate that is mixed with alcohol,” explains Taylor. “There can be a very subtle difference in smell, but that’s just because you have more or less ‘juice’ in the alcohol; the actual [smell of the] ‘juice’ is the same.”

In short, a high fragrance concentration means a higher percentage of perfume essential oils and less alcohol.

The types of perfume

There are actually five different types of perfume: eau fraiche, eau de cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum and perfume.

Eau Fraiche: An Eau Fraiche is the lightest concentration of fragrance. It has an oil concentration of one to three percent. It is a good choice for sensitive skin due to its low alcohol concentration and high water content.

Eau de Cologne: Eau de Cologne contains two to four percent oil and generally fades within one to two hours. Cologne is the most commonly used term for men’s fragrances.

Eau de toilette: An eau de toilette usually contains five to 15 percent oil and lasts about three hours. It is one of the most popular fragrance choices because it lasts a long time and has a lower price point than an EDP or perfume.

Eau de Parfum: Eau de Parfum has 15 to 20 percent oil and lasts up to five hours. They are another popular fragrance choice. Most fragrances will be available in an EDP and EDT variant.

Perfume: Perfume, also known as extrait de parfum, pure perfume or sometimes just perfume (just for the sake of confusion!) is the most concentrated scent. It contains 20 to 40 percent oil and can last six to eight hours. They are another good choice for sensitive skin types as they contain a low concentration of alcohol and are therefore less likely to dry out the skin.

Why is the price of an EDV so different from an EDT?

Because eau de toilette contain fewer perfume oils, you will find that their prices are usually much lower than that of an eau de parfum. Just remember – since EDPs are stronger, you can get away with using less; while an EDT takes a few spritzes to reach the desired intensity.

How long does perfume last?

The scent concentration affects not only the intensity, but also the duration. “Perfume concentration determines how long the perfume lasts on the skin, although individual skin type and fragrance family can also play a role,” says Taylor.

Because an eau de toilette is made with a smaller dose of perfume oil, it usually only lasts a few hours. The top note – the first scent released by a perfume – is dominant, making it refreshing when first applied, but due to the alcohol content, it evaporates from the skin fairly quickly. Why does my perfume “disappear” so quickly?

From the moment you apply it: The top notes or top notes last for around 5-15 minutes before disappearing. Another reason why you should never judge a perfume once you’ve sprayed it! The middle (heart) notes last for two to four hours and convey the main character of the fragrance. The base note, or “dry down,” typically lasts four to six hours.

Perfumes like to “stick” to the skin, so they last much longer on people with oilier complexions. 4 Mist a scarf with scent and the warmth of your body will allow the scent to bloom. Also a handy way to try a new scent you’re unsure about. Bored with it? Just take off the scarf and try something different…

5 Remember that the nose becomes desensitized and quickly gets used to the notes of your perfume. While you might not be able to smell it at all after 30-40 minutes, your friends and co-workers might still be able to, so maybe ask a friend if they can still smell it before you douse yourself again (tempting, like us find it!).

Which perfume lasts the longest: a three-step guide

Step 1. Choose the right concentration of perfume

“Longevity is the length of time that a perfume is detectable, and this is a really important factor for many consumers when purchasing a fragrance,” write Sarah McCartney and Samantha Scriven in The Perfume Companion: The Definitive Guide to Choosing Your Next Scent. “Different perfume concentrations last for different lengths of time, and keep in mind that most fragrances last longer on clothing than on the skin.”

With many of us having to learn how to buy perfume online, it’s especially useful to understand these differences and figure out which perfume will last the longest before hitting “Add to Cart”. “Usually these concentrations come in different styles,” explains Nick Gilbert, founder of private fragrance house Olfiction and Boujee Bougies scented candles. Here’s Gilbert’s handy cheat sheet:

Knowing these definitions will help you understand which perfume lasts the longest, but it’s not the whole story. “It’s important to remember that it’s not just the concentration that affects longevity, it’s also the combination of ingredients used that helps the fragrance last on the skin,” says Gilbert.

Step 2. Look for notes that resonate

When it comes to which perfume lasts the longest, it pays to understand grades. “The industry developed the ‘Notes Pyramid’ to explain how something smells,” explain McCartney and Scriven. “If you ask in stores what’s in a perfume, they often list three top notes, three middle notes, and three base notes. The top notes are the most fleeting and disappear first, perhaps after around 30 minutes. Heart notes last up to four hours and base notes linger the longest, eight hours or more.”

And what notes should you look for in this pyramid?

Resins and Herbs: Oud is a modern fragrance phenomenon made from a resinous wood and popular in the best men’s fragrances for its superior longevity and distinctive “notice-me” aroma. And anyone who lived through the 1970s can attest that once a whiff of patchouli hits the air, its sweet-earthy aroma is hard to shake off.

If cross-referencing these elements sounds complicated, don’t worry. Good perfumers take the guesswork out by combining long-lasting ingredients with stronger, more concentrated fragrance compositions. “You’re unlikely to find a citrus-based perfume because natural citrus is quick to pop and bounce no matter how much you use,” confirm McCartney and Scriven. “They’re more likely to be found in colognes and as a top note for stronger blends. Likewise, perfumers would put deep, balsamic labdanum in a stronger blend because it lasts longer.”

Step 3. Apply your scent to make it last

Finally, the way you treat your fragrance also helps maximize its properties. Many experts recommend scent layering by scenting your clothes and hair, as well as on your skin for extra longevity. You can also try rubbing some petroleum jelly into your skin and spraying your perfume on it, as petroleum jelly’s occlusive (moisture-blocking) properties “lock in” the scent molecules.

“If you find that a scent doesn’t linger, it’s usually because of dry skin,” says Gilbert. “Try using a moisturizer to prolong longevity. An unscented moisturizer can be used with absolutely any scent, but if your perfume has a body lotion to match, it’s worth using along with the perfume as you’ll have more of the scent on and some of it will also be locked into the moisturizer .”

The way you store fragrances also matters. “Light and heat break down perfumes, so keep a favorite item that you keep best and only use occasionally in the dark, like in its box,” say McCartney and Scriven. “Then, as you near the end of the flask, accelerate and empty it; there’s no use holding on to the last few milliliters of a sad, dark, sticky liquid. If it’s an everyday scent that’s only going to be around for a few months, free it from the box and keep it on your shelf.”

Different people have their own ideas about how to smell good, but if we’re being honest, there’s only one foolproof way to do it and that is by layering scents. Combining different formulations of a note to intensify the fragrance is simply referred to as layering.

A trick well known to many brands that produce scented personal care products in the same range, but the art of doing it is still unknown to many. So today we break it down for you.

Clean skin is the first step

There’s little point in applying fragrance to sweaty or dirty skin that’s already full of odor-causing bacteria. Let’s say you use a rose-scented body scrub or shower gel on your skin, and then apply a moisturizer that’s also scented with roses. Now try applying the same scented lotion to dirty skin. You’ll find that the scent of the moisturizer absorbs very well on clean skin, as there’s no stale stench to muddle the notes.

Oils and creams are your best friends

Now for the main part of layering, we reveal why scented oils and creams are such a big deal.
