“And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to them]. Verily I am Allah. There is no deity but Me, so worship Me and establish prayer in remembrance of Me.” [Quran 20:13-14]
Taking time out to pray five times a day is a duty for all Muslims and helps us to remember Allah (SWT) and our purpose in life – to worship Him. When we turn to Mecca we are united with all Muslims around the world who face in the same direction (qibla), and when we raise our hands to begin prayer we put aside the stresses and worries of life to remind us of our Lord.
When we pray we communicate directly with Allah (SWT) and we are closest to Him in sujud or prostration.
This is one of the best times to pray or make du’a – so the next time you are in the Sujood, take a moment to ask for Allah to alleviate the poverty and suffering of all those who we support all over the world.

How many Rakats is Tahajjud?
Number of rakats
“Salatul Layl (Night Prayer, i.e. Tahajjud) is offered as two rak’at followed by two rak’at and (so on) and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should pray one rak’at and this will be a Witr for all the rak’at which he has prayed before.”
Ilford Islamic Centre
Tahajjud, also known as “night prayer”, is a voluntary prayer performed by followers of Islam. It is not one of the five obligatory prayers required of all Muslims, although the Islamic Prophet Muhammad has been recorded as regularly performing the Tahajjud prayer himself and encouraging his companions as well.
Evidence in the Qur’an[edit]
In Fiqh as-Sunnah, Shaykh Sayyid Sabiq elaborates on the subject of tahajjud as follows:
And keep yourself awake through prayer for part of the night. It goes beyond what is incumbent on you; Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.[1] Quran 17:79
And those who spend the night prostrating and standing before their Lord.[2] Quran 25:64
Evidence in Hadith[ edit ]
Besides these Qur’anic verses, there are also a number of hadiths (transmitted and confirmed traditions from Muhammad) that emphasize the importance of Tahajjud prayer. In various hadiths it has been mentioned as qiyamul sabah (morning rising), salatul sabah (morning prayer) and tahajjud.
Recommended time[ edit ]
Performing tahajjud means waking up at night and then praying.[3]
Tahajjud can be performed before or after Emsak (when the fast begins) but before the obligatory Fajr prayer.
On this subject Ibn Hajar says:
There was no specific time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform his very early morning prayer; but he did what came easiest to him.
“The best time for tahajjud is the last third of the night.” (Abu Hurairah: Fiqh)[4][citation needed]
‘Amr ibn ‘Absah claimed that he heard Muhammad say:
A servant comes closest to his master in the middle of the last part of the night. If you can be among those who remember Allah Most High at this time, then do so. At-Tirmidhi
HIWGYKSAG
Number of rakats[ edit ]
Tahajjud prayer does not impose a specific number of rak’ahs that must be performed, nor is there a maximum limit that may be performed. It would be fulfilled even by praying just one rak’ah of Witr after ‘Ishaa’; However, it is traditionally prayed with at least two rak’at known as shif’a followed by witr, since Muhammad did this before Fajr Abdullah ibn ‘Umar narrated that Muhammad said:
“Salatul Layl (night prayer i.e. Tahajjud) is offered as two rak’at followed by two rak’at and (so on) and if one is afraid of approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should offer one rak’at and praying this will be a witr for all the rak’at he has prayed before.”
Bukhari, Hadith 990

How many mosques are in London?
There are estimated to be almost 2,000 mosques and Islamic prayer rooms in the UK, serving 4.1 million Muslims, or 6.3% of the UK population. About 1500 of those Mosques were located in London as of 2016.
Ilford Islamic Centre
The 2011 census recorded 1,012,823 Muslims in Greater London.[1] In the Office for National Statistics 2011 census, Muslims in London had risen to 12.4% of the population and 21% of the Muslim population in England.
history [edit]
Proportion who declared themselves Muslim in the Greater London Census 2011.
The first Muslims to settle in London were Lascars, ie 19th-century Bengali and Yemeni seafarers. Many Muslims from the Indian subcontinent served in the British Army and British Indian Army during World War I and II. In the wave of immigration that followed World War II, many Muslims from these Commonwealth countries and former colonies migrated to Britain to fill labor shortages and seek new opportunities for themselves. After the partition of India, many came from Pakistan, especially from Punjab and Azad Kashmir, in addition to the Indian state of Gujarat. This first wave of immigration in the 1950s and 60s was followed by migrants from Cyprus, Sylhet in Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. Many Muslims also came from various other countries, although the percentage is far lower than from South Asia. Among those from other countries, Muslims from Yemen, Somalia and Turkey have significant numbers, while those from Malaysia, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya represent smaller factions. Today, London’s Muslims come from all over the world and there is a small but growing group of converts.
21st Century [ edit ]
Shia Muslims pray near Marble Arch during the 41st Arbaeen procession in London, 2021.
After waves of immigration over the past few decades, London now has one of the most diverse Muslim communities in the world.
London’s Muslims are geographically dispersed, with settlements largely shaped by previous immigration patterns. The greatest concentration is found in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest in east London, where Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Indians predominate. The traditional home of Arabic-speaking Muslims in London is in the City of Westminster, although the original settlement around Edgware Road has since expanded to include Camden, Brent and Ealing.[2] In recent years, refugees and migrants from countries such as Eritrea, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Algeria, Morocco and Yemen have joined these diverse communities and in many cases established their own mosques, such as the Iqraa Foundation in Harlesden.
As in previous years, Muslims often face hostility from the local white population. In the years since 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq, nativism has often been particularly anti-Muslim, channeling anti-immigrant sentiment through the lens of Islamophobia.[3] Despite this context, certain Muslims have been able to rise in the ranks of society, notably the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
In 2013 it was reported that there were 13,400 Muslim-owned businesses in London, creating more than 70,000 jobs and representing just over 33% of London’s small and medium-sized businesses.[4]
Notable mosques and other institutions[ edit ]
The mosque is primarily a place of prayer. It is estimated that there are almost 2,000 mosques and Islamic prayer rooms in the UK, serving 4.1 million Muslims or 6.3% of the UK population. About 1500 of these mosques were located in London in 2016. These mosques in the UK range from modest and small “house mosques” in residential areas to larger, purpose-built mosques such as Regents Park Mosque in London (see below).[5 ]
London’s first mosque, opened in 1895 by Hajie Mohamed Dollie, Albert Street, modern Camden. Prof. Ron Geeves states this in his biography of Abdullah Quilliam. The mosque moved to Euston Road in 1899, where today’s Wellcome Collection is located. Mohamed Dollie was of Scottish and Malay descent. In addition, it is the subject of an upcoming documentary with Muslim History Tours.[6][7][8] Mohamed Dollie died in 1906 and was buried in New Willesden Cemetery with a new headstone. The West London Islamic Center was honored to be part of the community-led collaboration with Muslim History Tours[9]
The Fazl Mosque in Southfields, the first purpose-built mosque in London, was dedicated in 1926
The first purpose built mosque in London is at Southfields, Wandsworth. The Fazl Mosque was inaugurated in 1926 as a project of the Ahmadiyya community. Since 1984, the mosque and surrounding buildings have been the residence of the Caliphs Khalifatul Masih, making it the international headquarters of the community.
One of the first major mosques was on Brick Lane in a Grade I listed building that began as a church in the 18th century and was converted into a synagogue in the 19th century to reflect the changing waves of immigration from Huguenots to Eastern European Jews to Bengalis. Shortly after Brick Lane Mosque opened, two major mosques were built, the East London Mosque (with the adjacent London Muslim Center and the Maryam Centre) on Whitechapel Road near Spitalfields and the London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park.
Other mosques in Inner London include the Brixton Mosque in the middle of an Afro-Caribbean area and the Finsbury Park Mosque (also known as the North London Central Mosque).
The Süleymaniye Mosque on Kingsland Road serves a predominantly Turkish congregation. Named after Istanbul’s famous landmark, it was purpose-built and opened in 1999. Shacklewell Lane Mosque was the first Turkish mosque in the United Kingdom.[10] It was founded in 1977 by Turkish Cypriots, also in a converted synagogue.[11][12] The nearby Aziziye Mosque in Stoke Newington has been converted from a cinema.
Outer London is home to Croydon Mosque, the very large Baitul Futuh Mosque in Merton and Abbey Mills Mosque in Stratford. Also of note are Wembley Central Mosque, Leytonstone Mosque and Harrow Central Mosque.
The Islamic Center of England is an educational institution that opened in 1998. London is also home to the Islamic College, a college and university offering baccalauréat, BA and MA degrees in association with Middlesex University.
Islamophobia in London[ edit ]
Police forces registered 110 hate crimes against Muslim places of worship (Mar-July 2019). That number has increased from 47 in the same six-month period in 2016; Attacks have doubled over the past year.[13] For example, last year a jury convicted a man of murder after he drove a van into Muslim worshipers outside a London mosque, killing one person and injuring nine others. Overall, hate crimes against Muslims reported across the UK increased by 593% following the Christchurch shooting. The British government has gone to great lengths to curb these deadly attacks.[14]

How do you pray in Islam?
Place your head, knees and hands on the floor. While “sujood” (prostration) make sure that your forehead and nose touch the ground. This is the position called “sajdah.” When you are positioned fully, say Subhanna Rabbiyal A’laa (Glorious is my Lord, the most High) three times.

How do you make wudu?
- Start with the right niyyah (intention), say Bismillah.
- Washing hands three times, begin with right hand.
- Wash mouth three times.
- Rinse nose three time.
- Wash face three times.
- Wash arms three times, begin with right arm from fingertips to just above elbow.
- Wipe head once and clean ears once.
Ilford Islamic Centre
1. The process of performing Wudu begins with Niyyah or intention. This can be accomplished by stilling your mind and becoming aware of the action you are about to perform. You should say “Bismillah” which means “in the name of Allah” before starting wudu.
So what is the meaning of Niyyah? It is an Islamic concept that our actions are done with the intention of pleasing Allah. It is important that your beliefs and behavior as a Muslim match. Intention is an idea that comes from the heart. If we do good to do good, we will be rewarded. If you do good for public praise or to feed your ego, it can be said that your Niyyah was not pure.
Saying Bismillah before beginning wudu, either out loud or quietly in your mind, serves as a mental cue to prepare for the purification ritual. [1,2]
2. Wash both hands. Start with your left hand to wash your right hand up to your wrist. Do this a total of three times. Don’t forget to wash between your fingers. Next, repeat the process and wash your left hand three times.
In the hadith book of Muslim and Jami At-Tirmidhi it says: “And when he washes his hands, all the evil that he has done with his hands disappears with the water – or with the last drop of water – until he becomes free from sin. [3]
3. Use your right hand to scoop up some water and rinse your mouth with it three times. Rinse the water thoroughly to clean your mouth, then spit it out. [4]
4. Rinse your nose three times. Scoop up water with your right hand and inhale or partially sniff into your nose without taking in too much, which makes you choke. Blow out the water with your left hand and repeat this process three times. [4]
It’s important to ensure that the water you use is safe while rinsing your nose for wudu. If you’re from a warmer region of the world, developing or third world country, the water can harbor dangerous bacteria. In order to take proper precautions, if in doubt, it is recommended to boil the water and allow it to cool before rinsing to minimize the risk.
5. Wash your entire face with water. Take a cup of water in your hands and wash your face, starting with your forehead, bringing the water up to your chin and ending with your chin.
It is the Sunna of the Prophet to wear a beard, if one has one, one runs one’s fingers through the beard. If the beard is thin it can be washed thoroughly, otherwise for a thick beard run wet fingers through the hair to remove dirt. [5]
6. Washing the arms. Begin by washing your right arm first, from your fingertips to just above your elbow. The entire arm should be wet, leaving no dry parts. Repeat this three times. [4.8]
It is also important to remove any obstacles that would prevent water from penetrating the skin, for example mud, nail polish, wax or dough. [6]
7. Clean your head. This act is known as “masah” to ritually cleanse your head with a small amount of water. You want to get your hands wet and shake off excess water. Next, run your hands back and forth through your hair, i.e., from forehead to back of head, back to forehead.
Clean your ears inside and out. Use your index finger to wipe dirt or earwax out of the ridges of your ear and use your thumb to clean the back of the ear. This process of wiping your head and ear only needs to be done once.
Any Muslim head covering (kufi/taqiyah) must be removed. Wet hands must actually touch the head. If the hair is braided, there is no need to de-braid the hair. [7] For men with long hair or women, wiping the entire length of hair is not mandatory. Just go up to the front neck, but no further.
8. Washing of the feet. Begin by washing your right foot, covering it from the tip of your toe to just above the ankle. Be sure to wash the entire foot and clean between the toes to remove any dirt that may have built up. Repeat this three times and then do the same for your left foot. [4.8]
Summary of Wudu Steps:
Here is a summary of the steps. It is important that these steps are memorized and performed in this order without long pauses between each step.
Start with proper Niyyah (intention), say Bismillah. Wash your hands three times, starting with your right hand. Rinse mouth three times. Rinse your nose three times. Wash face three times. Wash arms three times, starting with the right arm from the fingertips to just above the elbow. Wipe your head once and clean your ears once. Wash feet three times, starting with the right foot from the tip of the toenail to just above the ankle.

How is tahajjud time calculated?
- Calculate the exact time difference ( ) between Maghrib ( ) and next day Fajr ( ).
- Calculate the time interval ( ) for one-third by dividing by 3.
- Either add twice the to or subtract from . This result will be the Tahajjud starting time ( ).
Ilford Islamic Centre
Tahajjud Calculator is a command line application written in C++ for calculating Tahajjud times. The user inputs the Maghrib time and the Fajr time of the next day and this application calculates the time when Tahajjud begins.
Tahajjud definition
Muslims pray five times a day and in addition some pray at night at Tahajjud time for additional benefits.
“The best time for tahajjud is the last third of the night.” (Abu Hurairah: Fiqh)
From the above definition, it is implied that Tahajjud time begins at the 2/3 mark between Maghrib time and Fajr time. It ends about 10 to 15 minutes before Fajr time starts.
Worked example
The following is a real example of calculating the start time of Tahajjud. This example is from Singapore for the date November 13, 2019.

algorithm
The following steps are used to calculate the Tahajjud start time:
Step 1
Calculate the exact time difference ( ) between Maghrib ( ) and Fajr the next day ( ).
step 2
Calculate the time interval ( ) for a third by dividing by 3.
step 3
Either add twice or subtract from. This result is the Tahajjud start time ( ).
calculation
We have
Maghrib time: = 18:51 [18:51] Next day Fajr time: = 5:27 [05:27]
According to the algorithm:
Note: The actual time is converted to 24-hour format in [square brackets] and the time interval is written normally
Step 1
= [05:27 + 1 day] – [18:51]
= 10:36 (10 hours and 36 minutes)
step 2
= [10:36]
= 3:32 (3 hours and 32 minutes)
step 3
= [18:51] + 2*(03:32)
= [18:51] + 7:04
= [25:55]
= [01:55 + 1 day] (next day 1:55)
= [05:27 + 1 day] – 03:32
= [01:55 + 1 day] (next day 1:55)

What is Ishraq prayer?
The Ishraq or Chasht or Duha prayer begins when the sun rises a quarter in the morning, and it ends before the time of Dhuhr prayer (i.e. obligatory prayer).
Ilford Islamic Centre
In Islam, a Nafl prayer (Arabic: صلاة النفل, ṣalāt al-nafl) or Supererogatory prayer, also known as Nawafil prayer, is a type of optional Muslim salah (formal worship). As with Sunnah prayer, they are not considered obligatory but are intended to bring additional benefit to the person performing them. An example is the offering of four raka’ahs “Nafl” before the obligatory Zuhr prayers.
According to the following hadith, “nafl” not only freely moves closer to Allah but also helps one to attain the better success in posterity i.e. Jannah (paradise).
Rabi’ah ibn Malik al-Aslami narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Ask (anything).” Rabi’ah said: “I ask you to be your companion in Paradise.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Or anything else?” Rabi’ah said, “That’s it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: “Then help me by making many prostrations (excessive prayers).” Sahih Muslim
Tahiyatul Wudu[edit]
Tahiyatul Wudu is the Nafl prayer after Wudhu.
Abu Hureyrah narrates that the Islamic Prophet Muhammad once asked Bilal at Fajr Salah:
O Bilal, tell me of your deed which is most hopeful after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps before me in paradise.
Bilal replied:
I have not done anything out of the ordinary except that whenever I do wudu day or night I give salah (tahiyatul wudu) thereafter as much as is written or granted to me.
Abu Hureyrah narrated that Muhammad said to Bilal
Tell me about the most hopeful deed (i.e. one that you consider most rewarding with Allah) you have done since you embraced Islam, because I heard the sound of your shoes footsteps in front of me in paradise.
Bilal said:
I consider no action more hopeful than that whenever I do ablution (wudu), any time of the day or night, I give salah (prayer) for as long as it is meant for me. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
Upon completion of wudhu, a prayer (salat) of two rakats is full of blessings (sawāb).
It should not be performed during inappropriate (makruh) times; when the sun rises, when it is at its zenith and when it sets.
Tahiyyatul Masjid (Nafl prayer upon entering the Masjid) [ edit ]
Abu Qatada narrated that Muhammad said: “When any of you enters a mosque, he should pray two rak’ats before sitting down.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim (Sahih)
This is a 2 Rak’aah Nafl prayer to be performed upon entering the Masjid and at specific times.
Ishraq prayer [ edit ]
Ishraq prayer time begins fifteen to twenty minutes after sunrise and consists of two raka’ahs.[1] Praying Ishraq is believed to bring greater rewards than performing the lesser Umrah according to some traditions.[2] According to the majority of hadith and fiqh scholars, Duha prayer and Al-Ishraq prayer are all names of the same Salah (ritual prayer). It is a recommended prayer without a fixed number of raka’ahs, and its proper time begins about fifteen minutes after sunrise and extends to the time of the sun’s descent from the meridian.
Duha or Chasht prayer[edit]
Duha prayer begins after sunrise and ends at the meridian and is generally believed to involve at least two raka’ahs, although in some traditions the number is four or even twelve.[3][4][5][6] [7] [citation needed] According to Sunni thought, performing this prayer is believed to be effective in seeking forgiveness for one’s sins.[8]
Ishraq or Chasht or Duha prayer begins when the sun rises at a quarter in the morning and ends before the time of Dhuhr prayer (i.e. the obligatory prayer). It has been said that whoever performs Chasht Nafls will receive a reward of 1 gold castle in Jannah. i.e. 1 Chasht prayer = 1 gold castle. Fatima used to perform this superfluous prayer regularly. The supererogatory morning prayer was narrated from Muhammad via routes that have reached mass narration levels – from 19 to over 30 companions – according to Imam al-Tabari, al-`Ayni in `Umdat al-Qari, al-Haytami, al-Munawi and al-Qari in Sharh al-Shama’il, Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari, al-Kattani in Nazm al-Mutanathir and according to the monographs compiled by al-Hakim and al-Suyuti and the reviews of Abu Zur`a al-`Iraqi in Tarh al-Tathrib, Ibn al-Qayyim in Zad al-Ma’ad and al-Shawkani in Nayl al-Awtar. It is a desirable and recommended prayer according to the vast majority of the Salaf and Khalaf ulema.
Awabeen[ edit ]
