Jack Skellington is the main protagonist in the film The Nightmare Before Christmas directed by Tim Burton and released in 1993. He’s loved, respected, and even idolized by the other residents for his role, but he’s tired of endlessly celebrating the same holiday and is depressed about it. Though his intentions are not malicious, Jack does not understand the true spirit of Christmas. Halloween Town plans to give the holiday a macabre makeover. Sally reveals a premonition to Jack, but Jack’s basic nature is impulsiveness. He doesn’t seem to register any conflicting information. At the end of the film, he notices Sally and her determination to help him. He proves that love can be a part of his nature by calling Sally his “dearest friend”, telling Sally they are meant to be together, embracing his future with her and hugging her.

Jack follows the formula of a tragic hero because he begins the story in a lofty position. Despite all his fame and talent, he longs for a different side of life. While the desire for completeness is not a fault, its impulsiveness proves to be one. He tends to be enthusiastic and inclusive, and his charisma is enough to influence every member of Halloween Town except Sally. His selfish choices lead to the near-annihilation of both Christmas and himself. The strength of Jack’s character lies in his will to right his own mistakes.

The official film soundtrack CD contains an epilogue not found in the film, stating that Santa Claus returned to Halloween Town “many years later” to visit Jack, where he discovered that Jack “had four or five skeleton children with him Hand” who play together in a xylophone band.

While trying to save his friends, Jack manages to destroy Oogie and save Christmas.

Disney universe[edit]

Jack Skellington is part of the Nightmare Before Christmas downloadable expansion pack which includes Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie-Boogie, Dr. Finklestein and the Mayor as playable in-game costumes. The downloadable content can be purchased from console stores (e.g. PlayStation Store). The pack contained the costumes, some of which could be found in the downloaded level. Unlike the original worlds in the game, which all had three chapters, the Nightmare Before Christmas world only had one chapter called “Halloween Graveyard”.

Kingdom Hearts series[edit]

Jack Skellington appears in four parts of the Kingdom Hearts video game series. He inhabits the world of Halloween Town, where the evil Heartless threatens its residents. The main protagonists of the games, Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy, befriend Jack and together they fight the Heartless and also Oogie Boogie. In battle, Jack uses some of his uncanny powers with demonstrations of magic, making him a formidable wizard.

Chris Sarandon reprises his role for the English version and Masachika Ichimura provides Jack’s Japanese voice.

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

Jack Skellington imagines Sora, Goofy and Donald Duck as the rulers of Halloween Town. Jack plans to use the heart Finklestein created to control the seemingly docile Heartless to host a festival called “Heartless Halloween” so Halloween can be scary, but the idea fails, as not only the first experiment berserk the Heartless, but also Oogie Boogie steals the finished heart and plans to use it to take over Halloween Town. At Oogie’s mansion, Jack, Sora and the gang confront him. After Oogie is defeated, Jack finds out that Oogie is using dark orbs as his life source, which Oogie combines with his mansion to become a giant boss. Once the gang defeats Oogie again, his mansion falls apart, revealing Halloween Town’s keyhole. Jack is considerably smaller in this game than in the film, although he is still quite tall compared to the game’s main protagonists.

“Created” from Sora’s memories of Halloween Town, when Jack Skellington wanted to ask Doctor Finkelstein what happened when he sniffed the potion that can bring “true memories”, Heartless appeared. When Jack Skellington finds out that Oogie Boogie stole Doc’s potion, he has to stop him before Oogie drinks the whole potion. They don’t reach him before he does, but they defeat him as Oogie is overcome with fear as a side effect of the potion. Sora worries about what will happen when he discovers his true memories, but Jack assures him that fear is a sign of a strong heart.

In this game, Roxas arrives in Halloween Town while Jack is busy brainstorming for Halloween. Jack has trouble thinking about things, but gets inspiration when he sees Roxas walking down a dark corridor. Roxas’ adventures in Halloween Town Jack continue to inspire things like spider-filled balloons, exploding frost gourds, and Halloween lanterns. When Roxas is sent to find the source of a horrific decline in the heartless population, he finds the city overrun by monsters called Tentaclaws. After seeing Roxas defeat the source of the tentacles, the cannibalistic Leechgrave, Jack invents a terrifying scarecrow version of Roxas as his centerpiece for this Halloween.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Loosely following the film to a degree, Jack attempts to retake Santa’s place. To that end, Jack asks Sora and the gang to help him be Santa’s bodyguard. But after battling the Heartless and Oogie Boogie, revived by Maleficent, Santa explains to Jack that they both have jobs to do with their respective holidays. Despite this, he begins to wear a Santa suit that Sally sewed for him. On the second trip to Halloween Town, Jack is still wearing the Santa suit as he still has longings for delivering Christmas presents and feels that it would be rude not to wear the suit Sally worked so hard to make. Along with Sora and the gang, he helps defeat Doctor Finkelstein’s experiment, who stole Christmas presents from Santa Claus in search of a heart. As a reward for all his hard work and help, Santa takes Jack for a ride in his sleigh for a while. After Santa drops Jack off at Halloween Town, Jack learns the true meaning of Christmas by understanding the act of giving. He ends up dancing with Sally and finally realizes that all the gifts she gave him are all from the heart and wants to give something back to her. She tells him that the greatest gift she could ever ask for is to be with Jack. Jack replies that she doesn’t even have to ask, meaning Jack feels the same way about her. During an end-credits cutscene, he is shown to be wearing his original suit, suggesting that he has taken Santa’s previous advice fully to heart and appears to be beginning to come up with new ideas for next Halloween.

In the Disney Infinity video game series, Jack appears as part of the second wave of playable characters. He has the ability to scare enemies and throw exploding jack-o’-lanterns. When he rides Ghost Rider’s motorcycle, his head will catch fire and resemble Ghost Rider’s flaming head.[5]

Jack appears as an excellent character in several Walt Disney parks and resorts, including Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Walt Disney World, and is located outside of The Haunted Mansion in Frontierland. Disneyland during the holidays, Haunted Mansion is taken over by the cast of The Nightmare Before Christmas and turns into the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Jack and other characters appear in Christmas attire during the ride. Jack also hosts the Halloween Screams and Not So Spooky Spectacular! Fireworks shows as well as the Horribly Funny Parade.[6] Chris Sarandon certainly provided the voice for the character.

Jack Skellington has been made into a Bendies figure[7] as well as various Funko Pop vinyl figures with different variants, such as a Day of the Dead variant. He appeared in the Kingdom Hearts action figure collections and was also released in the Japanese REVOLTECH sci-fi series in 2010 along with the Japanese monsters Gamera and Gyaos.[8] Diamond Select Toys also made many action figures of Jack and other characters.[9]

In 2017, a life-size animatronic prop of Jack Skellington was released. The prop was six feet tall and sold exclusively at Spirit Halloween.[10] But in 2019, the prop became a wholesale item.

In the Disney Infinity Toys-to-Life series, Jack appears as part of the second wave of playable characters.

In 2019, a Jack Skellington Lego minifigure was released as part of the Lego Minifigures Disney Series 2. A Lego Brickheadz figure of Jack was also released alongside a Brickheadz version of Sally.

Although the film is not part of the Disney Animated Canon, Jack has nevertheless become one of Disney’s most beloved characters. Jamie Frater adds, “Jack is perfectly realized as the ‘town hero’ seeking more in his life (or death, whatever that may be), a place we all find ourselves in from time to time.”[11 ] UGO Networks listed Jack as one of their top heroes of all time.[12]

The filmmakers constructed 230 puppets to represent the characters in the film, with Jack Skellington having “around eight hundred heads” that allowed all sorts of emotions to be expressed.[1] Sally’s mouth movements” were animated by the replacement method. During the animation process, only Sally’s face mask was removed to keep her long red hair in order. Sally had ten types of faces, each consisting of a set of eleven facial expressions (e.g. open and closed eyes and different facial poses) and synchronized mouth movements.”[2]

The film’s protagonist, Jack Skellington, is a skeleton dubbed “The Pumpkin King”. He is popular with the residents of Halloween Town for his charming personality and eagerness to please. Despite the lack of inhibitions, he means well. He’s in charge of Halloween. After years of repeating the same routine, he feels his inspiration for his own vacation waning. Christmas Town gives him new ideas and inspiration. He also appears in The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge.[3]

He is voiced in all appearances by Chris Sarandon and his singing voice in the film was provided by Danny Elfman. Because the film was originally released as an adult product, as it was considered “too dark and scary for children” in non-English speaking countries, Disney Character Voices International only dubbed the film in a few languages. Adult films, as well as children’s films, are usually dubbed , while in the rest of the countries they were only released with subtitles. Sally is Jack Skellington’s love interest. She is a very pretty, loving, caring and shy rag doll who told Jack that Christmas and Halloween shouldn’t be mixed up. It was originally patched up by Doctor Finkelstein. Sally is the only one who has doubts about Jack’s Christmas plan. Although her creator constantly tries to hold her captive, she often manages to escape by slipping him deadly nightshade, causing him to fall asleep so she can escape. Despite her makeshift looks, Sally is a determined person with a good sense of what is right. Fiona Apple provides vocals for “Sally’s Song” in the 2006 special edition The Nightmare Before Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, while Amy Lee provides vocals for “Sally’s Song” in Nightmare Revisited. She also appears in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge.[8]

Sally is a rag doll-like character with detachable limbs filled with fall leaves. She often falls apart, requiring her to sew back together, and carries a set of sewing needles and thread for the purpose. She was created as a companion to Doctor Finklestein, the mad scientist of Halloween Town. Their relationship is quite strained as Finklestein insists on keeping Sally under wraps under the pretense of protecting her from the commotion of the outside world. However, Sally is restless and curious.

It’s that restlessness, or more specifically, that desire for something better in life that draws her to Jack Skellington. At the beginning of the film, she idolizes and admires Jack like everyone else in Halloween Town; However, she quickly discovers that they share a desire for more in their lives, and her feelings for him intensify. The two refer to each other as “friends”, although Jack does not seem to know Sally’s true feelings for him as she is too shy to let him know about them other than through her cute actions until the end of the film.

The film’s album mentions that years later, Sandy Claws returned to Halloween Town and saw that Jack now had four or five skeleton children of his own. Many fans of the film and franchise assume that given the film’s ending, Jack and Sally eventually got married and started a family of their own.

Bryan Theiss states that “Sally is one of those rare fantasy characters that we can relate to on some level just as much as real-world characters can on a more literal level.”[9]

Sally’s voice was provided throughout the film by Catherine O’Hara[5][7] and Kath Soucie in the video game spin-offs.

Oogie Boogie[ edit ]

Fear the Oogie Boogie Man (voiced by Ken Page in all his appearances[10]) is the main antagonist of the franchise, dead king of the Oogie Boogie Men, and twin brother to Jack. The figure resembles a large burlap sack; When defeated, Oogie Boogie is revealed to be filled with many bugs.

Oogie Boogie did not appear in Tim Burton’s original poem, but Burton later drew a portrait of what appeared to be a potato sack man with horrible things inside.[11] The Oogie doll was two feet tall, twice the height of the other dolls.[11] In his autobiography Burton on Burton, Burton says that Oogie Boogie was loosely inspired by Cab Calloway’s appearances in several Betty Boop cartoons and that he asked Danny Elfman to slightly resemble Oogie’s song in Nightmare to Calloway’s 1931 recording of the song “Minnie the Moocher”. . Elfman eventually referred to the Betty Boop cartoon The Old Man of the Mountain (1933), which also starred Calloway; Santa’s phrase “Well, what are you going to do?” and Oogie Boogie’s response “I’ll do my best!” are direct quotes from this cartoon. Another idea for Oogie’s identity was that he was Dr. Finklestein is in disguise getting revenge on Jack and Sally, but it wasn’t pursued beyond storyboards as Tim Burton scrapped the idea. This is visible on the Special Edition DVD.

Despite the fact that Oogie is mostly separated from the other residents of Halloween Town, they still seem to allow him to participate in their celebration as his shadow (most likely due to the Bogeyman’s popular depiction of being involved in nightmares). appears on the moon (before dissolving into bats) in the opening musical This Is Halloween as “the shadow upon the moon at night that fills your dreams with terror to the brim”. (The version of “This Is Halloween” heard in “The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge” had a different voice during the “Shadows on the Moon” part.) He is alive now in an underground lair full of torture devices, each with a casino-like appearance, suggesting a gambling addiction (this is enforced by his use of dice). Red skeletons – believed to be the remains of previous victims – are found in several of the devices, and overhanging chains are used as perches by skeletal bats. Oogie Boogie’s lair is lit up with black lights during his theme song in the style of a cheap fun house. Underneath, Oogie himself glows bright green, similar to a glow stick. After the lights dim, however, the bright color fades from his hiding place, turning his appearance into that of a dank, basement-like dungeon. Above his hideout is the clubhouse of Lock, Shock, and Barrel, who regularly feed him bugs via a metal chute. It is initially assumed that Oogie cannot be killed or die, but it is later revealed that he can when his brain, the Lead Beetle, is destroyed. In the film, Lock, Shock and Barrel kidnap Santa and send him (against the wishes of Jack, who despises Oogie greatly) to Oogie Boogie’s hideout, where he is tied to a giant roulette wheel. According to deleted song material (found on the soundtrack version), Oogie plans to add “Sandy Claws” to his new and “special batch of Snake and Spider Stew” “to add a little spice”. Sally, after finding out Santa’s fate, tries to save him but is captured herself. Oogie tortures and then attempts to kill Sally and Santa, but is thwarted by Jack, who eventually releases a thread from him that rips off the sack covering him and causes most of his bugs to fall into the lava pit. The lead beetle is then crushed by Santa after falling next to the pit. Then the remaining bugs scurry away.

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King, Oogie’s origins and the birth of his rivalry with Jack were revealed. As it turns out, he once had his own holiday called Bug Day, which was (most likely) forgotten by real world people and hence disappeared. Oogie escaped, found Halloween Town, and decided this would be the new bug day. He and his army of insects invaded and nearly took the city. Jack found out and defeated the bugs and Oogie. Oogie survived the battle, learned to fear the Pumpkin King, and was imprisoned in his underground lair, which Jack warns that if Oogie ever left his lair, it would be “Game Over”! for him (Oogie). Oogie obeyed but secretly swore revenge.

In the 2004 video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, Oogie is resurrected by his henchmen, Lock, Shock, and Barrel, who stitch him back together. He quickly fools the residents of Halloween Town into tricking the townsfolk into building traps for Jack, stating that unless they have an even spookier Halloween next year, Jack would not be returning. Oogie then attempts to become the King of the Seven Holidays, successfully kidnapping the true leaders and attempting to assassinate Santa again. His plans are foiled by Jack. Desperate, Oogie struggles at Holiday Trash Hill (where all the holiday worlds trash goes) by transforming into a gigantic, stuffed version of himself called “Mega-Oogie”. He is destroyed again when his bugs come out of him.

Oogie also appears with other Disney villains at Halloween events such as Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland, the HalloWishes and Halloween Screams fireworks shows at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland respectively, World of Color: Villainous at Disney California Adventure and during the events ” Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party”, “Mickey’s Halloween Party” and “Oogie Boogie Bash” with separate entry (“hard ticket”).

Oogie Boogie also appears in the video game Kingdom Hearts as a member of Maleficent’s team of Disney villains. He appears again in the sequel to Kingdom Hearts II, where he attempts to turn Santa into a Heartless, and in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories as an enemy based on Sora’s memories of him.

Doctor Finklestein[ edit ]

Doctor Finklestein is a resident of Halloween Town. He is the mad scientist and the “father” of Sally. He is described as a pale mad scientist with a duckbill mouth and a hinged skullcap that he can open to reveal his brain. For reasons unknown, he uses a motorized wheelchair (early drawings by Finklestein show him standing free and his original action figure followed suit, meaning he wasn’t always intended as a wheelchair user). Finklestein is credited as “Evil Scientist” only in the credits. His real name is only mentioned in the film when the mayor calls him to the front of the line for his Christmas assignment.

Doctor Finklestein lives in a large observatory with his living rag doll creation Sally[12] and his hunchbacked assistant Igor. James Whale’s Frankenstein is quoted in Finklestein’s line “I made you with my own hands”. Unlike dr. Frankenstein takes Finklestein full responsibility for Sally, acting as an overprotective father and somewhat overbearing husband (which explains Sally’s attempts to escape), keeping her under wraps under the pretense of protecting her from the world. Although very strict with Sally, he is also shown to be friendly and helpful to Jack, as he allowed Jack to borrow some of his devices so he could conduct his experiments on his recently obtained Christmas objects. Finklestein is also involved in helping Jack Skellington in his plan to take over Christmas by bringing several skeletal reindeer to life to pull Jack’s sleigh. At the end of the film, Finklestein decides that Sally is too much of a handful and uses part of his own brain to create a woman.

dr Finklestein has a role in The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge. When Jack gets tired of doing the same thing on Halloween, Dr. Finklestein by giving him the Soul Stealer, a weapon that allows Jack to change his shape. Jack says dr Finklestein also that he should watch over the city during his absence. After reviving Oogie Boogie, Dr. Finklestein under Oogie’s control by switching his brain to another and creating monsters that obey Oogie Boogie’s every command. As Jack Dr. Confronting Finklestein and realizing his brain was being swapped, he embarked on a plan to get rid of it using the “sleep soup” Sally gave him. Jack was able to tell Dr. Putting Finklestein’s original brain back in place, allowing Dr. Finklestein broke free of Oogie’s control. In the game’s spin-offs, Finklestein’s name is pronounced “steen” instead of “stein”. For some reason, his wife’s creation “Jewel” doesn’t exist in the game, and Sally still seems to live with him, although in the film she seemed free at the end. Sally even says “He insists on keeping me locked up” while next to the hanging tree in the graveyard.

Finklestein also appears in Kingdom Hearts and other games in the series. When the Heartless show up in Halloween Town, Jack considers adding them to the Halloween celebrations and asks Dr. Finklestein for advice. Realizing that the Heartless need a heart, the two find the ingredients: pulse and emotion (terror, fear, hope, and despair). Her first experiment fails and Dr. Finklestein sends Jack with Sora and the gang to get two more ingredients, memory and surprise, to complete the heart. However, the heart is stolen by Oogie Boogie. In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, created from Sora’s memories, Dr. Finklestein a potion that allows people to see their true memories. The only problem is that Heartless showed up after sniffing the potion. In Kingdom Hearts II, Finklestein creates an experiment aided by Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Since the experiment has no heart, it goes on a rampage to steal gifts in an attempt to understand the emotions behind giving and win a heart of its own. Unfortunately, Sora and the gang have no choice but to destroy the experiment.

The Mayor of Halloween Town is portrayed as a short, fat man who looks like a giant candy corn with a cone-shaped, double-sided head, wearing an impossibly tall top hat, spider bolo tie, and a ribbon of office that says “Mayor” on it. His double-sided head has two faces: one face is peachy, rosy-cheeked, and smiling, while the other face is white-skinned, pale, and frowning with sharp teeth. Depending on the mayor’s mood, his head swivels around to indicate the correct face with a loud clicking sound. When not in use, the other face has its eyes closed and is considered to be resting.

Despite his position, the mayor appears to have very little actual authority over the day-to-day running of the city, nor does he have much confidence in his leadership skills, particularly when planning for Halloween. tries to harass Jack for his post on November 1st (the day after Halloween). Despite this, the mayor seems to be enjoying his position. Apparently he owns one of the few automobiles in the city, a hearse-like car called the “Bürgermeistermobil” that is equipped with a loudspeaker for announcements. The Mayor supports Jack and, despite his secret concerns, helps him bring his own version of Christmas to the world.

The Mayor of Halloween Town appears in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. His role in both games is pretty minor. In the first game, he helps Jack and Sora find an ingredient they need for the heart that Dr. Finklestein manufactures. In the second game, he attempts to stop two outbreaks of Heartless by yelling at the Heartless through his megaphone, but is unsuccessful. In The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, the mayor is seen in the opening sequence congratulating Jack on another “terrible” Halloween. He is later seen in the Mayor’s Madhouse level, where Jack rescues him from a cage hanging from the roof of his house. While Jack goes to Christmas Town, the mayor frees the other holiday leaders.

He is voiced by Glenn Shadix in the films Oogie’s Revenge and Kingdom Hearts II.[10] and by Jeff Bennett in Kingdom Hearts. His Japanese voice actor is Tōru Ōhira.

Lock, Shock and Barrel[ edit ]

Lock, Shock, and Barrel are introduced as Oogie Boogie’s “little henchmen” who are 9, 10, and 8 years old, respectively. The trio don’t seem very loyal to Oogie Boogie, although they take pride in their work and want to please him as they simply wreak havoc, both for their own amusement and to stay on his good side. After his death, the trio help the mayor get Jack and Sally out of Oogie Boogie’s hideout and have some harmless fun when it starts snowing in Halloweentown. Presumably out of their lust for trouble, they showed no protest and even joy when their master was revived in the spinoffs, and once revived him themselves in “Oogie’s Revenge”. They are all trick-or-treaters with masks that resemble their faces (e.g. Barrel’s skeleton mask is large and round to match his face, with a huge grin on it like his almost permanent creepy smile). Their names are a pun on the phrase “lock, stock and barrel”. While not entirely antagonistic, they are usually the comedy relief. They appear to be anti-heroes or just chaotic neutral characters as they will work for most of those who summon them regardless of their moral alignment and due to their young age seem motivated by boredom rather than actual malevolent intent.

Barrel wears a skeleton costume and has deformed feet, and almost always wears an orange and black lolipop that otherwise resembles a small human boy, albeit one with white skin, sunken eyes, and perfectly coiffed green hair. His face is round and has a constant grin except when angry or scared. Barrel usually controls the walking bathtub, which the trio use as their mode of transportation. He is often left out because he keeps tripping over his own deformed feet and is sometimes slow to assert himself.

Instructing them to “let that no-account oogie-boogie OUT!” (They promise, but press fingers behind their backs, indicating they’re just pretending they’re just pretending.) Jack sends Lock, Shock, and Barrel to “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” (the wrong name of the residents of Halloween Town for Santa Claus). ). First, they accidentally catch the Easter Bunny, after which Jack tells them to apologize and sends them back. They then capture their true prey and Jack takes Santa’s hat. The trio then take Santa to Oogie’s hideout, where Oogie taunts and threatens Santa. Once Jack defeats Oogie and rescues Santa, a hatch opens above it and Lock, Shock, and Barrel now appear as protagonists after guiding the mayor to Oogie’s hideout to find them. They are last seen throwing a snowball at Jack.

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King, Oogie Boogie sends Lock, Shock and Barrel off to capture the new “pumpkin king”. They come back with Sally instead, saying that in the dark she looked like Jack. Throughout the game, they are behind most of the town’s unrest, ranging from poisoning the acid pools to poisoning the leeches to knocking over the town’s streetlights, luring Jack into death traps, and helping Oogie in the final battle.

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, upon learning that Jack is temporarily leaving Halloween Town, Lock, Shock, and Barrel decide to revive Oogie Boogie out of boredom. In the game, Jack encounters the three in turn. In Chapter 15, the three of them make one last attempt to stop Jack in their mobile bathtub atop the Halloween Town mayor’s house. He defeats them, but they set a trap and drop him into a maze in Oogie’s lair. They no longer appear in the game after that.

After hearing talk of a heart that can control the Heartless in Kingdom Hearts, Oogie Jack sends the three out to steal the heart as part of his plan to take over Halloween Town. After the three are defeated by Sora, Donald, and Goofy, they confess that Oogie made them do it. Later in the game, they comment on how quiet Halloween Town has gotten without Oogie and consider making a riot just to liven things up. In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, the three found a Heartless and kept it as a pet before it grew too big for them to control.

In Kingdom Hearts II, Lock, Shock, and Barrel initially work as Doctor Finklestein’s (not very obedient) lab assistants until they encounter Maleficent, who resurrects Oogie Boogie for them and gives them the “prison keeper” Heartless to ward off Sora and society. The monster keeps the children in a cage under its body, but swallows one of them to act as its “pilot”, each giving the monster a different ability and appearance, eventually swallowing all three before attacking Sora and celebrates with his entire repertoire. After his defeat, the trio run away saying it’s “fun” and unintentionally revealing Oogie’s return. On the second visit, the three are accused of stealing presents after entering Santa’s workshop and being caught sifting through presents. Sora and the party must fight these mischievous rascals by knocking them unconscious and putting them in boxes. In the end, the three claim they didn’t steal the presents as they think Christmas toys are boring, while revealing that they were actually looking for parts for Doctor Finklestein’s experiment, forcing Sora to release them. They also cause trouble as obstacles before and after the fight with the experiment in the mini-game “Give gifts”. After the fight, they run away and are not seen again in the game.

In the film, Lock was voiced by Paul Reubens, Shock was voiced by Catherine O’Hara, and Barrel was voiced by Danny Elfman. In the Kingdom Hearts series, Lock was voiced by Jess Harnell, Shock by Kath Soucie, and Barrel by Jeff Bennett. In The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, Paul Reubens reprized the role of Lock, Kath Soucie reprized the role of Shock from the “Kingdom Hearts” series, and Dee Bradley Baker voiced Barrel.

Father Santa Claus the December Giver (or Sandy Claws, as Jack calls him) is the leader of Christmas Town. Stumbling across town, Jack is fascinated by the holidays and tries to bring Christmas to Halloween Town. To this end, Jack orders Lock, Shock, and Barrel to kidnap Santa Clause on Christmas Eve so Jack can take his place for the holiday season. The three then take Santa to Oogie Boogie, where the holiday character’s life is threatened. A last-minute rescue helps save not only Santa, but the entire Christmas holiday. Santa Claus manages to round up the living presents and replace them with the correct ones. Santa Claus was last seen flying over Halloween Town as the snow began to fall.

In The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, Oogie Boogie takes aim at Santa and dangles him over the tracks for his scissor-tipped Oogie train to drop him off. Santa Claus was rescued by Jack Skellington. When Oogie Boogie hijacked Santa’s sleigh, Jack lets him use the same sleigh he used when Jack was trying to improvise Christmas.

Santa Claus appears in Kingdom Hearts II. Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy meet Santa Claus when they follow Jack Skellington to Christmas Town. He also mentioned how Jack Skellington tried to improvise Christmas. Maleficent revives Oogie Boogie and sends him off to capture Santa. When Sora defeats Oogie Boogie, Santa tells Jack to focus on Halloween and Santa on Christmas. He also tells Sora to believe that he will see Riku again. Later, Santa’s gifts are given by Dr. Finklestein’s experiment stolen. He helps Jack make bait gifts to lure the experiment. Jack and company bring her back by hiding in a bait gift. After defeating the experiment, Santa decides to give Jack a taste of what it’s like to deliver Christmas presents. The owners of the franchise have undertaken an extensive marketing campaign of these characters across many media. In addition to the “Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland” featuring “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas characters,”[21] Jack Skellington, Sally, Pajama Jack, and the mayor have been made into Bendies figures,[22] while Jack and Sally even appear in fine art.[23] Moreover, Sally has been made into an action figure and a Halloween costume.[24] The Mayor has been made into a Bendies figure.[22] Jack is also the titular character in the short story “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Jack’s story.”[25]

Jim Edwards actually contends that “Tim Burton’s animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas is really a movie about the marketing business. The movie’s lead character, Jack Skellington, the chief marketing officer (CMO) for a successful company decides that his success is boring and he wants the company to have a different business plan. Some have wondered which real-life company failure the movie is based on: Sergio Zyman’s New Coke or Merck’s launch and subsequent withdrawal of Vioxx.”[26]

While Yvonne Tasker notes “the complex characterization seen in The Nightmare Before Christmas,”[27] Michael A. Morrison discusses the influence of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas on the film, writing that Jack parallels the Grinch and Zero parallels Max, the Grinch’s dog.[28] Philip Nel writes that the film “challenges the wisdom of adults through its trickster characters” contrasting Jack as a “good trickster” with Oogie Boogie, whom he also compares with Dr. Seuss’s Dr. Terwilliker, as a bad trickster.[29] Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic see the characters as presented in a more negative light and criticise the film’s characters as having racial constructs, with the protagonists using “whitespeak” and the antagonist, Oogie Boogie, using “blackspeak.”[30]

This perception was not entirely unanticipated by the filmmakers. Danny Elfman was worried the characterization of Oogie Boogie would be considered racist by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).[31] As Delgado and Stefancic’s book reveals, Elfman’s predictions became true. Nevertheless, director Henry Selick stated the character was inspired from the Betty Boop cartoon The Old Man of the Mountain. “Cab Calloway would dance his inimitable jazz dance and sing “Minnie the Moocher” or “Old Man of the Mountain”, and they would rotoscope him, trace him, turn him into a cartoon character, often transforming him into an animal, like a walrus,” Selick continued. “I think those are some of the most inventive moments in cartoon history, in no way racist, even though he was sometimes a villain. We went with Ken Page, who is a black singer and he had no problem with it”.[32]
