Our Cast Iron Baked Potato Cookers are designed to stand on all cast iron wood burners and multi-fuel ovens – and most steel ovens (though not on cool wall units or those with wraparound baking boilers). A hotplate is NOT required – it is simply placed on top of your stove.

Basically, it uses surface heat, which in turn is transferred to the cast iron shell. The pod gets hot and cooks your jacket potatoes evenly. It’s also very easy to open to take a look at what’s happening inside

This cast iron roast potato maker is small enough to fit on virtually any stovetop, but large enough to hold four medium (250g / fist-sized) potatoes or two giant potatoes.

The time it takes to cook your potatoes will vary greatly as it depends on how hot your fire is burning. We usually put some on the ovens in the showroom around 9am and by lunchtime they’ll be perfectly done. The Cast Iron Universal Baked Potato Cooker has a lever handle on the front with a hole for a poker to open if required. Wear oven mitts when handling and lifting as the pod gets very, very hot.

The bowl also has a small hole in the top – used for lifting in and out of open fires. Yes – you CAN use it on an open fire, but make sure you properly season this item first. It’s fine in small/medium open fires – but keep away from campfires and don’t burn wood and charcoal together*

For use on wood/multi-fuel stoves: Use a little sunflower/vegetable oil on some kitchen paper and lightly oil inside only. Place the BPC on your stove for at least 2 evenings if the stove is in use before cooking for the first time. This allows the BPC to get hot enough to fire the exterior kiln paint onto the pot (note that the paint may smell as it cures – just like a new kiln).

For use in an open fire: Start by building a small fire. Put the BPC in the fire for about 15 minutes. Take out and let cool. Repeat but for 30 minutes, then 1 hour and 2 hours – removing and allowing to cool each time. This allows the metal to expand and contract and harden.

How well ?

It works well, but it takes longer to cook, most of the day for me, and to turn the potatoes once during that time. Maybe my stove runs cooler than some as it’s just a small 5kW multi-fuel stove. I also used salt for the first time. Big mistake !! ! It makes the iron so salty after it comes out… anyway, I got away with it using oil and “proving” it. that is, oiling and then burning until crisp when empty. To clean, simply wipe with oiled paper towels. Best of all, it saves running a huge oven to bake two jacket potatoes, so it’s green and energy efficient. Yes it’s a good invention that I will keep using from now on, grandkids love it too!! It’s like putting the potato on the indoor campfire, and it’s whimsical. It’s really worth oiling them and baking empty the first time because then they won’t stick in there, just like you should with a wok for a waffle maker first time around. It’s all explained in the attached booklet, but I was too excited and in too much of a hurry to proceed and I really should have followed the instructions closely. But now everything is fine. could also try popcorn and toasted nuts. Have fun

The Large Cast Iron Potato Cooker features a flip-up handle as opposed to the locking handle on our standard size pods. Unfortunately this one is too big and heavy when full to lift in and out of open fires – it’s designed for stovetop use only. They fit most ovens. In the photo below it can be seen on a 6kW Firebird cooker.

After seasoning, lightly oil your baked potato and place in the BPC until cooked. If necessary, you can turn during cooking. Do not use salt on your BP while cooking in the shell as this will encourage additional moisture absorption and may encourage the BPC to rust.

The baked potato cooker should never need to be “washed” – but wipe out when necessary and lightly oil the inside with sunflower/vegetable oil on paper towels (like a wok) to protect and prevent rusting.
