Headliner Delete Ideas

After 2 summers trail running with the club and a week in the mud of Moab, I’ve decided I need to do something about my headliner. It collects dust like grandma’s apron and then it all falls out as we walk washboard streets, throwing ourselves into fits of sneezing and pissing on the dogs. What has everyone done to either erase their headliner and keep the sound deadening and still look decent, or what material have you switched to your headliner that isn’t as static and dust-magnetic? I considered just spraying the cardboard, but we all know what happens when the cardboard gets wet. I was thinking of rhino lining the roof, applying dynamat and then installing varnished veneer? Please reply with pictures if you have any!

Jeep XJ Cherokee Headliner Replacement

Jeep XJ Cherokee Headliner

upholstery metabolism

I don’t know about older Cherokees, but I swear I’ve yet to see one that doesn’t have a headliner, isn’t ragged, and hangs from the windshield to the tailgate. Have to say my Cherokee was no exception to the laws of gravity and gave it a little nip-tuck was definitely on my interior cleaning/restoration list. Maybe it wasn’t strictly necessary, but I figured how hard could it be?

Surprise! While it wasn’t exactly difficult to repair the headliner, it certainly wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be either. Contrary to what I thought, you can’t just lift the existing upholstery fabric and spray a little 3M Super 77 on it to make it stick. No, if you want to do it right you have to replace the whole thing with new upholstery fabric.

Luckily, the fabric is fairly cheap and easy to find almost anywhere. I found and bought mine on eBay for about $24. However, the real spray adhesive you really need to use for this job, 3M Super Trim Adhesive, will cost you about $20 a can, and if you need 6 cans for this job…well, you get the idea. But after phoning around a bit, I found that it was still cheaper to do it alone. And it ended up not being nearly as hard as I originally thought it would be and I absolutely love the results!!

Instructions 1. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the sun visors, retaining clips, overhead console and light dome from your Jeep Cherokee. A Torx T-25 bit is required to remove the grab handles and a Torx T-50 bit is required to remove the upper rear seat belt brackets. 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver again, remove the trim along the outside edges of your roof, starting at the tailgate. Leave the two front trim pieces loose but in place to support the headliner as you gently pull it out through the rear of your Jeep Cherokee. 3. Lay your headliner on the floor, fabric side up. Then carefully peel off the old cover fabric from the creature so as not to damage the cardboard backing. 4. The headliner foam remaining on the back of the box must be removed to ensure good adhesion of the new headliner fabric. The old foam should crumble and brush off with a coarse brush using very little force. 5. On a clean work surface, lay out your new headliner upholstery fabric, foam side down. Then slowly begin by spraying an even coat of 3M Super Trim Adhesive in parallel, overlapping strokes over the entire headliner fabric foam. Apply a second coat in the same way and in the same direction, then apply a third coat perpendicular to the previous two. 6. As with your headliner upholstery, begin by slowly spraying an even coat of 3M Super Trim Adhesive over the entire headliner board backing in parallel, overlapping strokes. Apply a second coat in the same way and in the same direction, then apply a third coat perpendicular to the previous two. 7. Allow to dry for at least 5 minutes before proceeding, then with the help of a friend, begin to carefully lay your new headliner upholstery fabric onto the cardboard backing, starting at the center edge of one end and working outwards to the other end. Then use your hands to flatten the headliner padding fabric with firm pressure to ensure a proper bond with the cardboard backing. 8. Trim the excess headliner padding along the edges of the headliner cardboard pad and cut out all the holes for the courtesy light, center console and wind deflectors. 9. Let sit for about an hour, then carefully reinstall your newly upholstered headliner to your Jeep Cherokee. Replace all trim pieces, sun visors, dome lights, center console, grab bars and seat belt brackets and you should be done. The Results As you can see from the photos below, the results are amazing. And after a month of installation, everything is still holding up perfectly. Please email me with any questions you may have.
