Wearing socks with sandals used to be the absolute fashion faux pas. If it’s hot enough to wear sandals, critics would argue, why wear socks with them? And isn’t the non-waterproof combination absolutely useless in mud situations or when it starts to rain?

Most importantly, many people simply find the combination an eyesore.

The fact that they wore white socks with their old-school leather sandals was ridiculed by many Germans for years.

These Germans weren’t the only ones associated with the looks; it was adopted worldwide, mostly by older people who didn’t care about the fundamental dictates of fashion. Nevertheless, the German habit became a national cliché that continues to this day: Artist Miguel Fernandez, for example, refers to the cliché in the DW animated series Das ist so deutsch.

The cultural phenomenon therefore deserves further investigation. Are the Germans really the origin of the combination that used to be rejected by the international fashion police?

Trendsetters from antiquity

The internet doesn’t reveal much about the origins of the Germanic cliché. There is a Wikipedia page on “Socks and Sandals” in English and a few other languages ​​- but it doesn’t even exist in German yet.

It is mentioned that the earliest documented evidence of socks and sandals being worn together was found through an ancient Roman archaeological site in North Yorkshire, England. An analysis of the remains of a sandal showed that the Romans did this 2,000 years ago.

Genuine Roman-Egyptian socks, parted at the top and intended to be worn with sandals, were excavated from a burial site in Egypt in the late 19th century. They are estimated to date from the 4th to 5th centuries and have been part of the collection of the V&A Museum in London since 1900.

The Japanese have also developed their own style of combination, as the fashion historian Birgit Haase, professor at the HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, emphasizes. Traditional tabi socks from the 15th century were also specially designed to be worn with strap shoes. Worn by men and women in different contexts, they are still part of the formal attire at tea ceremonies, for example.

German tourists established the cliché

In comparison, the sock-sandal combination does not appear in German costume, even though knee-high socks are the main thing for men in lederhosen.

Rather, the image spread through German tourists, says Lena Sämann, head of the fashion department of Vogue Germany online. “They climbed mountains with tennis socks and trekking sandals, amazing Southern Europeans,” she told DW. Germans have been the world’s top travelers for years, but they still want to feel comfortable and “at home” abroad, which is why they’d probably choose shoes that feel like their slippers, says Sämann.

The fashion editor also points out that “Germans like to be ready and equipped for any situation. You’ve always had a penchant for functional clothing – often in a partner look. you don’t get blisters on your feet that easily.”

Fashion historian Birgit Haase cites another practical reason for the combination: socks absorb the sweat in sandals – so they are not as useless as they seem at first glance.

Sandals with a strong tradition

If it’s unclear when the socks-and-sandals-wearing cliché became associated with the Germans, the country has a well-documented history as the champions of orthopedic sandals.

Birkenstock is obviously one of the world’s most famous brands in this field. German shoemaker Johann Adam Birkenstock started his family business in 1774. By 1945, their shoes with cork insoles were being developed, and the first model resembling the Birkenstock sandal that is widespread today was invented in 1964.

The shoe owes its cult status above all to the German-American designer Margot Fraser. During a spa trip to Germany in 1966, she discovered how comfortable the sandals were. She began selling them in California in the 1960s, where they became popular with hippies.

In the 1980s, Fraser turned the brand into a multimillion-dollar business in the United States. Today, in North America, sock-and-sandal wearers are seen more as a West Coast phenomenon, satirized by characters in the TV series Portlandia and countless memes.

Another German orthopedic sandal with a cork wedge in the sole has recently gained popularity. The Wörishofer was developed in the Bavarian spa town of Bad Wörishofen in the 1940s. Countless lifestyle magazines have enthusiastically reported in recent years that the former fashion no-go is hip today. Key bonus points of the trend: It shows off the expensive designer socks better while hiding unsightly toes.

Labels like Miu Miu, Wood Wood and Vetements have been dressing their models in socks and sandals on the catwalk since at least 2010. The combo’s popularity grew among hipsters who, inspired by normcore and irony, adopted “deliberately uncool” looks.

From Justin Bieber to Tyler the Creator, from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to M.I.A., superstars have also flaunted the pairing.

But can anyone pull the tricks of high fashion labels, post-ironic hipsters and eccentric celebs? The sock-and-sandals combo is bound to remain a never-ending debate — one the pioneering German tourists never wanted to engage in.

What style of shoes did Jesus wear?

We don’t know exactly what kind of sandals Jesus wore, but we have some scriptures that say he wore sandals. For example, in the book of Matthew, chapter 3, verse 11, where John the Baptist says:

“For my part, I baptize you with water because of your repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to take off. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire”

Also Mark 1 verse 7 says:

He preached, “He who is stronger than I comes after me, whose shoelace I am not worthy to stoop to untie.”

John said that Jesus wore sandals with laces, but we don’t know exactly what kind of sandals. The only clues come from paintings and statues made hundreds of years after his death.

Sandals in Biblical times

We have researched the biblical accounts of sandals and found many instances where sandals were a very important item of the time, used figuratively and mentioned in a very preferred way by many.

Here are a few scriptures for example:

“How beautiful are your feet in your sandals” (Song of Songs 7:1)

“Then I put on you an embroidered garment, and gave you fine leather shoes, and wrapped you in fine linen, and clothed you with fine clothes.” (Ezekiel 16:10)

He now called the twelve together and began sending them out in pairs and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He also commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no lunch bag, no money in their belts—but to put on sandals and not to wear two clothes (Mark 6:7-9).

“But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quick! bring out a robe of the best quality and clothe him with it, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet” (Luke 15:22).

“The angel said to him, ‘Get dressed and put on your sandals.’ He did. Finally he said to him, “Put on your robe and follow me on.” (Acts 12:8)

“When I led you in the wilderness 40 years, your clothes are not worn out on you, nor are your sandals worn out on your feet” (Deuteronomy 29:5).

Through Bible research, ancient art, and artifacts found during archaeological digs, we discovered that the ancient sandals consisted of flat soles made of leather, wood, or other fibrous materials, fastened to the foot with laces, usually made of natural leather thongs, which lay between the big toe and the second toe, around the heel and across the top of the foot.

Resources were limited. The leather is sourced locally and processed in natural settings.

Sandals were definitely a unique part of ancient life. A good pair of leather sandals was very desirable and people loved their sandals.

A recent series of sermons at South Harbor Church, while re-reading an excellent book by Tim Keller, The Prodigal God, brought new insights to my mind from this familiar, very powerful parable spoken by Jesus, as I am particularly drawn to the 4th -Characters attracted and 5 – Moves highlighted below:

Parable of the prodigal son and the forgiving father – Luke 15:3-32 Jesus continued: “A man had two sons (1). The younger said to his father (2), “Father, give me my share of the estate.” So he divided his property among them. “Not long after, the younger son gathered all he had and went to a distant land, and there squandered his fortune in savagery. After he spent everything, there was a severe famine across the land, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of this country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything. Inclination – A longing to return to the Father.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have leftover food, and here I am starving! I will go and return to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.” Condemnation – expected and deserved of the Father

So he got up and went to his father. Despair – Lost Hope, Seek Help Similar to step #1 of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), recognizing that my life is unmanageable and that I am personally powerless to improve it.

“While he was still far away, his father saw him and felt compassion for him; He ran to his son, wrapped his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” But the father said to his servants (3): “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and slaughter it. Let’s feast and celebrate. For this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found.” So they started to celebrate. Restoration – Undeserved grace and favor shown by the Father

“Meanwhile the older son was in the field. (4) As he approached the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was the matter. “Your brother has come,” he replied, “and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has it back safe and sound.”

“The older brother got angry and refused to go inside. So his father went out and begged him. But he answered his father: “Look! All these years I have worked for you and never disobeyed your orders. But you never gave me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours, who has squandered your fortune on whores, comes home, you slaughter the fattened calf for him!” ‘My son,’ said the father, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have, is your. But we had to celebrate and rejoice because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'” Celebration – The Father’s call to restore lost brothers and sisters

There are several life changing insights that can be gleaned from this powerful story (parable) of Jesus including:

1. Insights about the faithful father – God

God makes His “property” available to all human beings and allows us to choose our path in life, as it began in the Garden of Eden when He allowed the first man and woman to choose between good and evil. Although he knows the outcome, God’s love compels him to give us “free will” to either obey or reject him.

He lovingly awaits our coming to Him – with arms wide open – and longs to receive and give back to us – without hesitation – critically needed “property” like these “gifts”: A robe – forgiveness covering our sin and shame ( Love, Grace), A Ring – Restored identity and belonging to one’s family (Value), Sandals – Renewed purpose and meaning in life (Hope)

2. Insights into wayward children – our humanity

No matter how badly we screw up…rejecting God through poor choices and selfish living…we can know that the Father eagerly awaits our return to Him.

When my life is out of control, broken, and unimaginable, I do well to “come sane,” repent, and return to the outstretched arms of the Father. He (God) holds what we need for a fulfilling life, as we all strive and yearn for it.

Third, these are the most overlooked but equally powerful…. 3. Insights for Servants and Sons – Those who claim God as Father

God commands His servants and calls His sons to model His heart and His grace (mission) for lost and wayward people – unconditionally – to grant them acceptance into His (our) family as He has lovingly granted us.

This restoration includes: unconditional forgiveness, restored identity, renewed purpose and meaning, and joyful celebration.

I have missed this…admittedly both in understanding and often in fact…as it is the Father’s (God’s) commandment to His servants…and to His Son calling…his heart to the lost and lonely Sharing people by extending them full acceptance and restoration as our brothers and sisters in God’s family. As I think about it… I am impressed that the elder son – members of God’s family (church) – should have sought his brother and/or eagerly awaited his return with the Father, and/or at least He would have had the Son’s return (his brother’s) supposed to join the party…but he didn’t! Instead, the father ordered his servant to grant restoration to the prodigal son on his behalf through a “quick” distribution of the significant, symbolic gifts of a robe, ring, and sandals.

Why??? This question must penetrate my consciousness if I am to grasp the full meaning of this story. I would describe the answer to the question as: The Inherited Danger of Sonship vs. Servitude”. As a servant, I am more inclined to obey God’s commandments and model His heart and mission, while as a son I tend to be selfish and justified in my thoughts and actions.

So what are we? The following passages shed light on this…

John 15:9-17 – According to Jesus’ teaching on the vine and branches: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now stay in my love If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my father’s commandments and remain in his love. I told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. My command is: Love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do as I command. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not understand his master’s business. Instead, I called you friends because I shared with you everything I learned from my father. You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and set you up so that you could go and bear fruit – fruit that stays – and that whatever you ask for in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love one another.

Ephesians 1:3-9 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly kingdoms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For before the creation of the world he chose us in himself to be holy and blameless to him. In love he predestined us to be sons through Jesus Christ according to his good pleasure and will, to the praise of his glorious grace which he has bestowed on us in those whom he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of God’s grace which he bestowed on us. With all wisdom and understanding he has made known to us the mystery of his will for his good pleasure, which he intended in Christ to be accomplished when the times have come to their fulfillment, to bring unity of all things in heaven and beyond on earth under Christ

It is clear from these passages that as we accept God’s gift of salvation, we become adoptive children in His families—a great honor—while also being called and commanded to seek, accept, and restore the Father’s work to lost children his family. I see this as a “slippery slope” as I (we) vacillate all too easily between our “rights” as sons and our “obligations” as servants.

To further describe the Father’s unconditional love and mercy…how he calls and commands his sons and servants to demonstrate…I came across this article:

Well known is the story of the prodigal son who grew bored and tired of living a life of moral and spiritual excellence. He decided that he wanted to take on the portion of the family inheritance that was his, solidify his independence, and partake in a different lifestyle that would allow him to live free of any limitations. Although his father’s heart was broken, he complied with his son’s request and did not forbid him to pursue what his heart desired.

After tasting all he craved for a while and wasting all his money, the prodigal became impoverished, lonely, empty, dissatisfied and ended up working in a pigsty. One day, as he began to assess his situation, he compared his present lack to his past abundance. Instead of thinking like many, “Woe is me, I have chosen my position, so I must remain in it…” he thought to himself, “Why should I continue in this situation when I can and will return to my loving Father.” allow him to live and work on his property.” Shortly thereafter, the lost man began his journey home.

While the lost one is far from home, his father sees him and runs to him. In his father’s embrace, the prodigal admitted his wrongdoing, acknowledged his unworthiness to be called a son, and begged for forgiveness. The prodigal believed he no longer deserved to be called a son and expected to be reinstated into the family as one of the hired servants. How surprised and delighted he was when his father wholeheartedly accepted him as a son rather than a servant and insisted that a fatted calf be slaughtered for a celebration. Yet this token of love from the father was small compared to what should be expressed by the father’s further teaching about the prodigal.

The father quickly commanded one of his servants, his son, standing in rags, to bring out and put on the best robe, ring, and sandals (Luke 15:22). Each individual item contains a priceless and profound insight into the love of Father God for all those who belong to him and bear the title of son or daughter.

“Bring forth the best robe and put it on him” – By putting the best robe on him, the father told the prodigal, as well as all those who watched, that his position as a son would be restored. It was an instant demonstration of complete approval, love and mercy, and protection – great benefits of being a son. In addition, everyone witnessed the transfer of the father’s main inheritance from the eldest son to the youngest son.

The same thing happened in Genesis 27:15 when Rebekah took the choicest clothes of the eldest son Esau and put them on the younger son Jacob. In Hebrew culture, the eldest son, the firstborn in the family, received the best inheritance/distribution of property, goods, etc. With the prodigal, like with Jacob, the inheritance passed to the youngest son.

“Put a ring on his hand” – Long ago, giving a ring to someone was a sign of great affection and also a symbol of being placed in a position of authority; among the rich it was a sign of wealth and dignity. Pharaoh removed his signet ring and put it on Joseph’s hand as he installed him in office in Egypt (Genesis 41:42). In the book of Esther, the king took off his ring, the royal seal used to sign the decrees of government, and gave it to Mordecai (Esther 8:2). The ring showed the pharaoh’s affection for Joseph and the king’s affection for Mordecai, conferring on them all the power and authority necessary for the promotions they received, one as governor and the other as prime minister.

The ring on the lost man’s hand showed the father’s great affection for him. It also heralded once again the transfer of inheritance that would normally have gone to the firstborn.

“Put sandals on him” – The prodigal returned home without shoes, a sign that he had become extremely destitute, for in ancient Biblical times only servants and slaves went barefoot. When the father ordered shoes to be brought to the prodigal and to put them on, he said for the third and last time that the prodigal should not be treated as a servant, but as a son with all rights.

Forgiveness would be empty without the restoration of privileges forfeited by sin. So if you are called son or daughter by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior through the power of the Holy Spirit, you have found favor with the Father. The best robe has been put on you, a demonstration of the Father’s total approval of you and love and protection for you. And a ring has been put on your hand representing the riches you have in Christ, authority given to you in Jesus name, and installation to the office of king and priest to God. Sandals were put on your feet to affirm sonship and all its benefits including but not limited to healing, loving kindness, tender mercy and all good (Psalm 103).

In closing, I would like to offer this prayer: “Father God, I cannot thank you enough for your mercy and undeserved grace for me, a prodigal, wayward son who tends to reject you and go his own way. Though you are undeserving, Father God, shower upon me bountiful gifts of forgiveness, identity and belonging to your family, and value and purpose in my life. Father help me not lose sight of the despair and hopelessness I come from, while in return I extend Your grace and restoration to other family members who find their way back to You When I forget…me selfishly and feel entitled as I lose sight of your love for lost people…thank you that I can know – without a doubt – that it is you, Father God, eagerly waiting to receive and welcome me home .

Question: Why did Moses have to take off his sandals in the burning bush?

Answer: Exodus 3 relates Moses’ experience of seeing a bush on the side of Mount Sinai that appeared to be burning but did not burn. He went up the mountain to study this phenomenon. Verse 2 says, “The angel (messenger) of the Lord” (written with the definite article in Hebrew) spoke to him out of the flame. In verse 6 this messenger identified himself as God. He told Moses to take off his shoes because he was standing on holy ground. There is your answer: Moses stood on holy ground.

Taking off your shoes was and is a sign of reverence, humility and respect. The same experience was repeated in Joshua 5:15 when the captain of the Lord’s army told Joshua to take off his sandals. In 6:2 this centurion is identified as the Lord. Every time Scripture shows God appearing in human form, we understand it as Jesus. He is the only representation of the deity with a physical body. Since he has always existed, we call him the pre-incarnated Jesus in the Old Testament. He went through the fiery furnace with Adam and the Hebrews.

Almost all ancient religions stipulate that shoes must be removed and communicants must be barefoot when making sacrifices to or worshiping their gods. Orientals remove their shoes when entering someone’s house. They don’t do it because their shoes might be dirty; They do it as a sign of respect. These customs must have originated from God Himself in these 2 scriptures.

Some ancient writers said that there may have been an earlier temple on Mount Sinai, and the reference to sacred ground was that Moses stood on these ruins. There is no historical record of a temple there, and Moses would certainly have known about it, having tended his father-in-law’s flocks there for 40 years. There was certainly no temple near Jericho when the centurion of God appeared to Joshua. The ground was sacred because of the presence of God. God’s own presence makes every temple holy. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that if we have given our hearts to be indwelt by Jesus, our bodies are holy because we are temples of the Spirit of God.

Taking off his shoes reminds us that God loves to fellowship with us without barriers. As his bare feet touched the ground on which God stood, Moses certainly felt the divine presence. Matthew 27:51 records how God rent the veil in the temple when Jesus died so that nothing would hinder our personal entry into His presence. He still desires personal fellowship with each of us as we confess our sins and our need for Him and draw near to Him in Jesus name.

Hikers choose hiking sandals or hiking sandals for short and long walks. As with any hiking shoe, it is important to find a good fit and test the hiking sandals on shorter distances and with or without socks. Adjusting your hiking sandals
