A little uneven as you can see here. We tried to go super straight and even on both sides the first time and it proved really difficult at home. There were stains and color in places that shouldn’t have been and the color faded a bit the first few times we washed them.

If you’re a Batman or Joker fanatic, chances are you’ve been eyeing the just-released BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY BOOK AND JOKER MASK SET. Available now in stores, it includes a copy of Batman Vol. 3: Death of the Family, the acclaimed story that reintroduced the Joker into The New 52 and sent shockwaves through the entire Batman book family. But of course that’s not all. It also comes with a mask modeled after the severed face of the Joker in the book.

This is great for scaring your kids or little sister. Seriously, if you ever need them to leave you alone for a while, just put that bad boy on. They won’t come near you.

But that’s just the beginning of what you can do with the Joker mask. With Halloween only a few weeks away, you could use the mask as a starting point for a full Joker costume. It’s not quite as hard as it looks. It’s just a matter of putting the right items together. Even better, you have two options to choose from.

OPTION 1: JOE’S GARAGE

We should start by saying that if you’re expecting a cosplay tutorial, you’ll probably be disappointed. We love cosplayers, but unfortunately we’re not that good at it ourselves. Rather, we’re just going to lay out everything you need to put together a solid Joker Halloween costume. We doubt you’ll take home any prizes at Comic-Con Masquerade, but you can win your office costume contest.

The Joe’s Garage option is actually pretty simple and straightforward, and you might already have some of the components lying around your house. Here’s what you need to assemble this costume.

Navy blue mechanic’s overalls or overalls

If you’ve ever been to a mechanic, you’ve seen these things. The good news is that they’re very easy to find online and fairly affordable, although you might want to search for both “overalls” and “boiler suit.” The overall results are likely to be supplied from the UK, the overall results from the US. You’ll find pricier options, but you should be able to get a good pair of jumpsuits for under $30.

Just your standard work gloves. Hopefully you have some of these at home, but if not, they’re not too expensive. The gloves are actually an important part of this costume because if you include them you don’t have to wear makeup on your hands which makes the costume much easier to wear.

The mask actually contains hair. While we don’t think you’ll need hair dye, Halloween spray paint is pretty cheap and can help with the ‘touch up’. Consider it optional. However, you will need good quality white paste makeup, which you can find online or at any costume store. If you really want to go chic, we recommend starting with a green undertone and then wearing the white on top. Finally, look for makeup setter spray cans. You should use it to prevent the makeup from rubbing off.

The good news is that you don’t need too much makeup with this setup, especially if you get long-sleeved jumpsuits and wear them with the sleeves rolled down. The Joker doesn’t wear them that way, however, so decide if you prefer ease over accuracy.

Finally, if you’ve read Death of the Family, you know the Joker wears a name patch that reads “Joe” above his left lapel. If you have easy access to something like this, do it. If not, we think just jotting it down with a black marker is good enough for Halloween.

OPTION #2: DRESSED TO KILL

This is much closer to the traditional Joker look that fans are familiar with. However, in Death of the Family, the Joker really only wears it for the final showdown. This will be more of a challenge putting it together, but has the added benefit of being more recognizable for casual fans, and could also serve as the basis for a standard Joker costume (without the mask).

Here’s what you need for this costume.

Purple suit

That’s the toughie. You won’t find brightly colored suits at your local menswear store. But you can find them online. They’re not cheap, but that’s definitely an option. You can also check thrift stores. Sometimes you’re lucky. Perhaps a better option is a vintage clothing store if you have access to one. They’re not as cheap as a thrift store, but probably cheaper than buying a new suit online.

Just in case you were wondering, the Joker’s pants are purple in the comic. We can’t blame you for thinking they were black based on the image above.

Black shirt

Nothing too extraordinary here. Perhaps you already own one? If not, they’re easy to find.

Black vest

To be honest, you can probably skip this article, but the Joker wears a black vest as part of this getup. If you want to include it, you should be able to find some pretty affordable options online.

Green tie

This costume is actually a bit simpler than the traditional Joker outfit as the tie here is just a standard tie. You just have to find one in green (which admittedly isn’t the most popular color).

Blue carnation

It’s a bit hard to tell, but the Joker’s carnation is blue. You have a few options here. You can look for real blue carnations, you can visit a craft store and buy a fake blue carnation, or you can buy a white carnation and dye it blue with food coloring. This last option may be the best choice if you want to get the perfect color.

Black handkerchief

Another element you could probably skip in a pinch, but the Joker carries a black handkerchief in his left lapel pocket.

White gloves

While we’re sure the gloves worn by the Joker in the comic are probably pretty fancy, you should be able to just buy white cotton gloves. They sell them at every costume store. Again, we suggest you don’t skip the gloves. They make it so much easier to work, trick or treat, or eat while wearing the costume.

You can’t see the Joker’s shoes very well while he’s wearing this outfit, so you have some leeway there. We recommend a pair of black dress shoes. Finally, you’ve probably noticed that the Joker wears a jester-themed tie clip as part of his suit. This is obviously a specialty item that you cannot find in stores. While smart people will no doubt find a way to make their own, you can always mimic a really simple one out of white poster board with some markers, or just skip it.

Go for a subtle green shirt, like this tailored Prada number ($540) or this green cotton dinner shirt from Boglioli ($248). Then finish with a beige vest from Tagliatore ($203) or this corduroy vest from Stefano Ricci ($950) for a bit of texture.

2. The shoes

Footwear-wise, the 2019 Joker sports some well-worn, two-tone, lace-up Oxfords. We recommend investing in these Tom Ford Dress Shoes ($1,890) with brogue details. They have a slight ombré effect – not as dramatic as the Joker’s treads – and are made from super-soft calf leather. Not only are they incredibly fashionable, but they will accompany you for a lifetime.

3. The face

There are two ways to “put on a happy face” – as the Joker says. First, you can test your DIY makeup skills and try the look at home. The good thing about the Joker’s tousled clown makeup is that it’s pretty indulgent. You don’t have to make sure you’re super groomed or that your eyebrows are exactly the same height. If it’s a little messy, roll with it.

We recommend getting this Ben Nye color palette ($80) — it’s got the blues, blacks, whites, and reds you need — and this Clown White Makeup ($3.50) if you want a little more need white for your base coat. For those of you who don’t know, Ben Nye is a leading special effects makeup artist and (unofficially) goth-certified — that ghostly white complexion stays put all night no matter how hard you dance. You’ll also need two makeup brushes, a small precision tip ($24), and a large concealer brush ($36). When it’s time to launch the application, you can watch this YouTube tutorial (below) or follow our written guide.

First, paint your whole face white with the large concealer brush. Try to lighten the spots that you will color later (the triangles above and below the eyes, the eyebrows, the nose and the lips). Then take a cue tip and wipe off excess white paint from these soon to be colored areas. As a result, color and white are not mixed and diluted – you get a richer red and blue. Next, grab the small brush and add blue triangles to the top and bottom of your eyes. You’ll notice that the Joker’s triangles aren’t exactly symmetrical and are reminiscent of blurry teardrops, so have some fun with your shapes. You can practice on a piece of paper first until you’re ready to tackle your face. Rinse the small brush and move to the red dots. Start with the eyebrows, they don’t have to be mirror images either. In fact, it adds to your troubling behavior when it doesn’t. Finish by painting your red nose and that menacing grin. When it comes to lips, we think bigger is better.

If all this sounds too difficult for you, leave it to the professionals. Stella Sensel in New York specializes in special effects makeup and charges between $150 and $250 for a full face, while Lisa Marie in LA charges $300. Of course there are many talented artists out there; Do your research and book quickly.

4. The hair

Reaching the Joker’s broccoli mop is pretty easy. Grab a tub of Good Dye Young’s Poser Paste Temporary Hair Makeup ($18) in Kowabunga Green and lather generously. Too lazy? Go to your trusted barber or salon and ask them to dye your hair green – temporarily, of course. Alternatively, you can buy a Joker wig on eBay for around $35 each.

The Joker in the Dark Knight is one of the scariest portrayals of the infamous clown prince. He’s notable for his long, greasy green hair and messy clown makeup. He has long blond hair that he dyes green. It is unkempt in depicting its chaotic nature.

The Joker has a smile-shaped scar that stretches from cheek to cheek. We never fully learn how he got that disturbing scar, as he tells various stories about its origin. But he makes the most of it by covering his face with smeared clown makeup.

One of the best things about this version of the Joker costume is that it’s pretty easy to get the right look, but it always looks amazing. We recommend growing your hair out to a reasonable length and using some temporary green hair dye to bring the joker hairstyle down. To be as authentic as possible, don’t wash it a few days before your cosplay event. If you can’t grow your hair out in time, a good quality wig will do.

Now for the fun part… The Joker’s makeup is relatively simple. Only three colors of face paint are needed: white, black, and red. Start with white face paint and cover most of your face. You can be a little sloppy to get that grungy look. Leave space around your eyes and around your mouth. Now apply some black face paint around the eyes.

This last part can be a little tricky. Use some fake scar makeup to recreate the Joker’s cheek scars. Let them dry in place. Once dry, use the red face paint to cover them up like Heath Ledger’s Joker does in the movie. For a good guide, check out the makeup tutorial below.
