Chocolate is toxic to dogs, especially dark chocolate because of the higher cocoa content. Other factors include the amount ingested and the size of the dog. Symptoms of chocolate toxicity include hyperactivity, tremors, increased heart rate, and seizures. It can be deadly in high enough amounts.

If you love chocolate but don’t like the bittersweet taste of dark chocolate, a York Peppermint Patty might be a good compromise. A patty has 2.5 grams of fat and 140 calories. Patties are relatively small and contain no trans fats.

In contrast, a Snickers bar contains 12 grams of fat, 250 calories, and 4.5 grams of saturated fat.

While Bedwell doesn’t specifically recommend eating sweets like these, she understands that everyone has their favorites that are hard to resist. So she advises moderation.

“A good rule of thumb for portion size is to stick to somewhere between 150 and 200 calories,” she says.

The benefit of these treats is that they give you a touch of sweetness without exploding your waistline. Three slices of this candy have a total of 70 calories and no fat or sodium.

But while candies like Jolly Ranchers are low in fat, they are high in sugar. Bedwell is not a fan of such particularly sugary candies.

“The worst kinds are the ones that are 100 percent sugar, things like jelly beans,” she says.

Popcorn is another healthy snack alternative to candy. It’s a naturally whole grain, meaning it contains all the elements of the grain — the germ, bran, and endosperm — and packs nutritional power in the form of protein, vitamin E and B vitamins, and minerals.

“Popcorn is a superfood,” says Bedwell, adding that it’s packed with fiber, which regulates blood sugar and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.*

Popcorn kernels are also packed with antioxidants called polyphenols. Bedwell says recent research indicates that popcorn has higher levels of polyphenols than some fruits and vegetables.*

Of course, it’s easy to turn healthy popcorn into a problem by coating it with butter and salt. Bedwell suggests topping your popcorn with a small amount of almonds, dark chocolate chips, or fresh Parmesan cheese to add flavor.

Jolly Rancher is an American brand of candy, gummies, jelly beans, lollipops, sour bites[1] and a line of soda pop released in 2004 by the Elizabeth Beverage Company.[2] It is currently manufactured by The Hershey Company.

Bill and Dorothy Harmsen founded the Jolly Rancher Company in 1949, choosing the name to convey the impression of a friendly western company, and opened their first Jolly Rancher Ice Cream Store on May 28, 1949 in Golden, Colorado. Difficult to find this ice cream to sell during the cold winter months, they added a line of loose and boxed chocolate provided by a small Denver-area candy farm. The Jolly Rancher Company opened a number of franchises in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska, supplying both chocolates and a five-cent hot cinnamon toffee stick, which proved very popular. It was the popularity of this candy that prompted the Jolly Rancher Company to expand their hard candy line.[3]

Jolly Rancher filed a trademark for Jolly Rancher as a word mark on March 31, 1958 and was granted registration number 0695762 for that mark on April 5, 1960. The first commercial use of this word mark by Jolly Rancher was noted in the application as being June 1, 1960.[4]

In 1966, the Jolly Rancher Company was sold to Beatrice Foods, although Bill Harmsen continued to run the business.[5] In 1983, Leaf, Inc. acquired a number of Beatrice’s candy brands, including Jolly Rancher. In October 1996, The Hershey Company agreed to purchase Leaf, Inc.’s North American candy brands, including Jolly Rancher, Whoppers, Milk Duds, Good & Plenty, PayDay, and Heath Bar. The original Jolly Rancher flavors were Watermelon, Apple, and Fire Stix. They soon introduced cherry, orange, tangerine, lemon, grape, peach, black liquorice and sour apple. Finally, blue raspberry replaced lemon. Current flavors include cherry, blue raspberry, grape, green apple, fruit punch and watermelon. There are also sour, cinnamon, and smoothie varieties. In 2013, lemon was reintroduced in an all-lemon bag. In 2015, Jolly Rancher offered a “Fruity Bash” strain containing strawberry, mountain berry, lemon, orange, and pineapple. In 2017, Jolly Rancher offered a “Hotties” variety bag containing watermelon and cayenne, blue raspberry and sriracha, cherry and habanero, and green apple and ginger. In 2020, Jolly Rancher offered a tropical variety bag featuring fruit punch, golden pineapple, lime, and mango. It’s that time again for childhood and adulthood to meet in the most delicious way with Jolly Rancher Vodka! They make this delicious drink by infusing vodka with Jolly Rancher candies, similar to how we make Skittles Vodka or Starburst Vodka.

And Jolly Rancher Vodka is a lot easier to make than these others, and the results are fabulous. It’s delicious and beautiful to look at.

You can whip up batches of five flavors of Jolly Ranchers Vodka in as little as twelve to fourteen hours. It requires very little work on your part, hence they also make wonderful, affordable and memorable gifts. And we have more ideas for cocktail gifts here, too.

Jolly Rancher Vodka

You will need:

Duration: 12-14 hours. That’s about 20-30 minutes of prep time. The rest of the time you just wait for the infusion to finish. You need:

A full liter of vodka. You may have to buy a 1.75 liter bottle to get it. You don’t have to spend a lot on the vodka. Just pick one that goes down smoothly. Absolut and Svedka are great options that we have used several times. And you can use the leftover vodka to make vodka jelly beans.

Optional: a plastic wrap or newspaper to cover your counter, as little bits of Jolly Rancher candy will fall out of the wrapper and stick to everything.

Step 1: Sort the Jolly Ranchers

Separate your Jolly Ranchers by colour/flavor.

This is grape, green apple and watermelon on top with cherry and blue raspberry in front. As you can see, you don’t necessarily get the same number of all flavors in one assortment bag.

This bag had more of the grape than any other flavor and less of the blue raspberry. But even with the blue raspberry, there was more than enough to do the whole experiment twice.

Step 2: Bottle Jolly Ranchers

Add twelve Jolly Ranchers of each flavor to each bottle. Yes, you can put them directly in the bottle instead of in a mixing container. The reason?

Because you don’t have to skim any of it like you do with waxy candies like Skittles. Every bit of Jolly Ranchers—that’s mostly corn syrup, sugar, flavoring, and coloring—belongs in the end product here.

And that’s why Jolly Rancher Vodka is so much easier than lots of candy infusions. When you’re done, you should have five vials of nice colored candies in the bottom.

Step 3: Pour in the vodka

Next, pour the vodka into the bottles above the candies. Insert a funnel (optional) into the neck of each bottle and pour your vodka into it. I filled mine to the brim.

As you can see, as the vodka starts to break down the candies, they immediately take on the color of the vodka.

There is no need to shake them. Just let them sit for about eight to 12 hours and all of the candy will dissolve completely without messing up and nothing sticking to the jar.

I also tried shaking and it took the same amount of time. You can shake if you want, but it doesn’t make a difference.

Your almost finished product will look like this if you have these bottles:

It was a pleasant surprise to see how different the colors of the watermelon and cherry came out. The candies look almost the same shade of red. But with the fortified vodka, they don’t look alike.

As the picture shows here, the cherry is a nice deep red and the watermelon is a lighter red – sort of coral or a cross between pink and orange. Even side by side they don’t look like the same color.

Step 4: Chill!

Put your bottles in the freezer and let them cool for a few hours. Now they are really ready to drink or mix into cocktails.

What you have in your bottles now is almost pure vodka, so they are very strong in alcohol. The flavors are what you would expect. At first you simply taste the Jolly Ranchers in liquid form, just like the candies have always tasted.

Then the vodka hits you with its characteristic tasteless burn. You can definitely drink these straight as flavored martinis or shooters, and they’re a lot of fun.

But you can also mix them in cocktails – more on that in a moment.

How long does that last? We don’t know of any scientific way to test that, and we’re not qualified anyway. But we kept them in the fridge for up to 25 days and there was no change in taste or color and they didn’t make anyone sick.

So we recommend making them two weeks or less in advance, just to be safe.

Can I do this with rum? You sure can! Rum adds a bit of its own flavor, more so than vodka. But rum and candy is a good combination, so it’s nice.

If you want to test it first, put a Jolly Rancher in your mouth and then sip rum. If you like this combination, you’ll like the infusion, too.

You can also mix them into some cocktails:

Make a raspberry kamikaze with Blue Raspberry Jolly Rancher Vodka in place of the Chambord. You end up with a blue cocktail instead of a deep red, but the taste is very similar and really good.

Replace the vodka in a Tokyo Iced Tea with Apple Jolly Rancher Vodka. This goes well with the Midori.

Instead of grape schnapps, try a Grape Russian Tea with Grape Jolly Ranchers Vodka.

Replace the grenadine in a German Cherry Bomb with Cherry Jolly Rancher Vodka. It gives a chocolate covered cherry flavor.

Have a love bite with Cherry Jolly Rancher Vodka instead of cherry liqueur. Note, however, that the Jolly Rancher vodka floats on top of the other layers, not below.

Make a Laffy Taffy, but with Watermelon, Apple, and Raspberry Jolly Rancher Vodka instead of the schnapps and DeKuypers the recipe calls for.

Mix one of the flavors with some sparkling water/soda water or 7-up or Sprite.

A touch of Rose’s Sweetened Lime contrasts beautifully with watermelon, grape, blue raspberry or cherry.

You can definitely serve these over ice or just water them down a bit if straight vodka is too strong, but you don’t want to dilute the flavor with another flavor.
