How a wood burning stove works

Wood stoves – the most efficient way to heat your home

One of the oldest and still most proven forms of heating is the wood stove. These highly efficient units were traditionally the heart of the home before the introduction of modern central heating and electrical appliances. They were used not only to heat the house but also to cook all the family meals. These days, not many people actually use their stoves for cooking as modern appliances have replaced them. But the fact remains that these devices are among the most efficient ways to heat any home, and best of all, they use a renewable and inexpensive resource for heat. Here’s a guide on how they really work. So once you have your new stove installed you will know exactly what goes on inside the unit to produce such a warm and inviting warmth.

The difference between a wood stove and an open fireplace

People often confuse a wood stove and a fireplace. They’re not really the same. The heat coming from a stove is more efficient than a fireplace because the airflow can be controlled within the unit. An open fireplace generally has a flow of air from the house coming in from the front, fueling the fire. Air also comes out of the chimney and ventilation from the chimney allows smoke to escape rather than enter the home provided the chimney is kept clean.

More control over the heat

A furnace works to control the air that is brought into the device. Airflow is still very important as a complete lack of air would not feed the fire and would simply dampen the flames. With every stove you will find ventilation openings and an air control valve. The valve can be fully opened to allow maximum airflow for the hottest flame and closed for less heating and a cooler flame.

insulation and heating capacity

A stove is much more than a box in which the wood is kept with good air circulation. The materials used throughout the furnace are also important. Not all metals conduct heat as well as others, and over the years cast iron has proven to be one of the most efficient materials for building these types of units. It is inexpensive, plentiful, recyclable, durable and will last for many years. It can keep warm for a long time even after the fire is out, so the remaining radiant heat of the device can keep the temperature of the room for a long time.

The iron furnace – efficient enough on its own

When the air enters the device, it enters the firebox. The firebox is the main part of the unit and most people simply believe that the unit is made entirely of cast iron. The truth is that the iron stove can be efficient enough on its own, but it’s the insulated bricks that surround the interior that make it more efficient. The bricks retain even more heat and prevent the wood from simply sitting on the bottom of the unit, facilitating airflow within the system.

flow out

It’s not just about keeping all the heat inside the device. Bringing fresh air into the firebox to allow the flames to grow is only part of the process. The heated air has to go somewhere. Some modern wood stoves have a fan system that allows some of the heat to be blown into the room, improving the overall efficiency of the heating unit, but the extra air still has to escape somewhere outside the house or the whole unit will would be nothing but a fire hazard.

Chimney – gives the smoke a place to escape from the house

Heated air naturally rises, so a standard flue provides a place for smoke and unused air to escape from the home. Some homes with older chimneys may require the use of a pipe inserted into the chimney (a chimney liner) to allow for easy cleaning and proper smoke venting. If there is no chimney in the house, the installer will install one for you. Depending on the needs of the furnace and the house itself, the flues can either be taken directly out of the ceiling or vented through a small flue in the wall of the house.

blacklocst said maul ratt did you make any videos on cleaning the burner head on the 600? Click to expand…

No, I didn’t… I need to investigate. I hired a professional chimney and stove cleaner last year who took the insulating blanket (which is over the flues) and cleaned it and the entire top section along with the firebox. You never mentioned any maintenance on the tubes. If I find anything out I’ll post a video. Many Thanks.
