What Do Women’s Clothing Sizes (S, M, L) and Numbers Mean?

Is size 16 “normal” – or a serious risk? These women are all Britain’s most common dress size, so you’d expect them to be healthy, but a series of medical tests have come up with surprising and worrying results

The average height for a British woman is a curvy 16

Almost half of British women are a dress size 16 or over

A test on four “average height” women revealed serious health problems

What do you see when you look at these photos: four beautiful, happy, normal women, or four severely overweight women whose excess pounds are dangerously unhealthy?

They all have the average UK figure – now a curvy height 16 – and represent the new normal.

But we live in a time when “average” means overweight. Around 45 per cent of British women are a dress size 16 or over, and Mrs Average’s waist has grown 7 inches since 1951, when her vital stats were a slim 37-27-39 and she was a stone lighter.

Is normal normal? These four women are all a size 16 – the average height of a British woman – but is the average height healthy?

One of the problems, doctors say, is that if people feel like their size is normal, it’s not a cause for concern.

“People often think they’re not that heavy because they’re the same size as everyone else around them – but the health risks are the same and very serious,” says Dr. Peter Mace, Assistant Medical Director at Bupa Health Clinic.

“Being overweight can dramatically increase your chances of developing cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The latter can mean an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, kidney failure, blindness and even limb amputation. When the fat sits around their midsection — visceral fat — it gets packed around the major organs, further increasing the risk.”

So are the risks real? And how healthy is the average woman?

WHAT WE TESTED

Each woman received an intensive Bupa Essential Health Assessment that measured blood pressure, pulse, heart rate, lung function, blood sugar, risk of diabetes and risk of heart disease.

Blood tests for cholesterol and liver and kidney problems (such as gout). Three experts analyzed the results: Dr. David Ashton, cardiovascular disease and obesity expert at Healthier Weight Clinics; dr Jonty Heaversedge, an experienced family doctor; and dr Peter Mace of Bupa, a senior health assessor. KEY TO WHAT THE TESTS SHOW:

✘ = Unhealthy ✘ ✘ = Of Serious Concern

To find out, we sent four size 16 women – each from a different decade – through a series of medical tests and had their results evaluated by experts. They all look and feel healthy — but our research shows they could be piling up problems for the future. . .

BMI (Body Mass Index) A measure derived from height and weight. Between 18.5 and 24.9 is normal, 25 to 30 is overweight, over 30 is obese.

Body fat The percentage of fat in the body. For women under 40, the healthy range is 21-32%; over 40 it is 23-35%.

Waist-to-Height Ratio Belly fat percentage is assessed using the waist-to-height ratio. The ratio should be below 50.

Lung Age This test assesses airflow through the lungs. Overweight people may have slightly smaller lungs, increasing their “lung age.”

Diabetes risk A blood test determines the glucose and uric acid levels – higher values can mean an increased risk of diabetes. The score is calculated using risk factors and lifestyle.

Cholesterol Measured by blood test. The reading should be less than 5.

Risk of developing coronary artery disease A score derived from six reliable predictors — age, gender, total and HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), diabetes, blood pressure, and smoking — and then compared to the risks associated with a average group of people of the same age were measured.

Normal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 140/90. This shows the systolic pressure when the heart is pumping blood, the “over” diastolic pressure when the heart is resting between beats.

Liver function A blood test shows whether the liver is functioning normally.

“I feel good, so it’s strange to discover problems”

30s: Hannah Cave, 36, has high blood pressure

Hannah cave, 36.

Works in cleaning services, lives in Hampshire with husband and two children.

Weighs 11.5lb and is 5ft 6in.

Says, “I welcome being a size 16, but my downfall is sugar.”

A digestive biscuit becomes a whole pack. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, but eat hearty portions at mealtimes.”

dr Mace says that Hannah’s blood pressure is in the upper limit of acceptable, so she should take steps to lower it.

Her lung age is also slightly older than herself, which is probably related to her overweight.

The health effects of Hannah’s height are offset by the fact that she’s still young and pre-menopausal, when hormones help keep cholesterol levels healthy.

But she has dangerous levels of visceral fat, and if she doesn’t lose weight, she’ll be at increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers in her 40s and beyond.

according to dr Ashton, Hannah is typical of many women her age with work and personal commitments who subsist on food and do not engage in regular physical activity.

She has worrisome belly fat and her weight gain will accelerate as she hits her 40s. Hannah has to be careful about the groceries she buys and eats.

dr Heaversedge says Hannah shouldn’t be complacent.

HANNAH’S RESULTS

✘ BMI 25.2 – Overweight

✘ Body Fat 34%

✘ Waist-to-Height Ratio 52 – a dangerous amount of belly fat

Activity level (1-11) 4

✘ Lung age 39 years

Total cholesterol 4mmol/l – healthy

Diabetes Risk A 100% risk of developing diabetes in the next ten years

Risk of coronary artery disease 1% risk of developing it in the next ten years (average for her age)

✘ Blood pressure 136/88 – high end of the healthy range

liver function normal

The first signs of health problems are there – increased blood pressure and reduced lung function – and it’s important that she makes lifestyle changes now rather than later.

Being more physically active and eating less cookies gives her a better chance of seeing her grandchildren.

Hannah’s Response I am aware that I am overweight but I feel healthy and my height has reached a comfortable plateau so it is strange to hear that this could be having such an impact on my health in the future.

I know belly fat is dangerous, but since having kids, losing it is impossible.

The rating is an eye opener. I’ll be making changes right away – like eating smaller portions and doing two power walks a week instead of just one.

“I’m having a heart attack, but I want to enjoy life”

40s: Boudicca Scherazade, 44, is at risk of cancer and heart disease

Boudicca Scherazade, 44.

Antiques dealer, single, no children, from Hampton Court, London.

Weighs 14.8lb and is 5ft 7in.

Says: “I cook three or four times a week and have never eaten a burger in my life, but I drink a bottle of wine every night and I love cheese.

That’s probably why I gained two stones in two years.

I walk my dog 30 minutes a day, but I don’t do any specific exercise.”

dr Mace says nearly half of Boudicca’s body mass is fat, and much of it around her midsection — increasing her risk of diabetes, coronary artery disease and colon cancer.

Her risk of breast cancer is higher because of her weight combined with drinking 60 units of alcohol per week.

The ideal for women is 14.

dr Heaversedge says Boudicca’s blood pressure is higher than I would expect for a woman her age, and as blood pressure rises, so does the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

She is currently shielded from health problems by her age, but if she continues to overeat it won’t be long before I see her in my office.

dr Ashton says Boudicca’s results are typical of someone with a sedentary lifestyle.

Although liver function tests are normal, obesity leads to fatty acids in the liver, which cause inflammation and eventually irreversible scarring.

I suspect that due to her obesity and heavy drinking, a liver ultrasound would show a lot of fat changes – the precursor to cirrhosis.

Boudicca’s reaction I didn’t realize I was technically obese. I now see that I need to lose weight to lower my cholesterol.

These results confirm what I already expected – I will probably die of a heart attack before my time.

But I won’t worry about risks like breast cancer and heart disease as I think we should enjoy life while we can.

RESULTS FROM BOUDICCA ✘✘ BMI 32 – obese

✘✘ Body Fat 43.4%

✘✘ Waist to Height Ratio 62 – dangerous belly fat percentage

Activity level (1-11) 3

✘✘ Lung age 59

✘✘ Total Cholesterol 6.3 mmol/L – above the healthy range

✘ Diabetes risk Two in 100 chance of developing diabetes in the next ten years

✘✘ Risk of coronary artery disease 5% risk of developing it in the next ten years (above average for Boudicca’s age)

✘ Blood pressure 128/88 (above healthy range)

Liver function normal SHIELA’S RESULTS ✘✘ BMI 32.3 – obese

✘✘ Body Fat 44% – well above the healthy range

✘✘ Waist to Height Ratio 63 – Dangerous amounts of fat around the abdomen

Activity level (1-11) 4

Lung age 52 years

✘ Total Cholesterol 5.6 mmol/L – above the healthy range

✘✘ Diabetes risk One in three chance of developing diabetes in the next ten years

Risk of coronary artery disease 2% risk of developing over the next ten years (less than the 8% average for Sheila’s age)

Blood Pressure 115/71 (OK)

liver function normal

“My husband cooks delicious dinners”

50s: Sheila Bailey, 52, is in the danger zone for diabetes

Sheila Bailey, 52.

Company director from Cambridgeshire. Married, four children.

Weighs 13st 7lb and is 5ft 4in.

Says: “I know I’m overweight – and it’s due to a heavy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

“My husband makes delicious dinners and when he’s not around I reach for M&S ready meals.

“The British weather doesn’t tempt me to run and it never seems to be time for a swim.”

according to dr Mace, Sheila is at very high risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next ten years.

Your high cholesterol is typical of someone who doesn’t exercise.

She should increase her exercise and limit sugar and fat intake.

I would suggest that she starts brisk walking, which also strengthens the muscles around her lungs and reduces her lung age.

dr Heaversedge says Sheila’s weight, rich diet and lack of exercise are posing problems for the future.

The weight around her midsection greatly increases her risk of type 2 diabetes.

dr Ashton says Sheila’s total cholesterol is higher than it should be, which increases her risk of heart disease.

Regular physical activity would transform their health — it would reduce the fat around their midsection, restore normal insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, and lower their cholesterol levels as well.

Sheila’s Response I am appalled that I am at such a high risk of developing diabetes as I know it is a really serious condition.

I know I really need to get fit and lose weight.

In the two weeks since the MOT I’ve started walking briskly and I’ve lost half a stone. I would like a size 12.

“With so many overweight people, I feel fit”

’60s: Belinda O’Brien has dangerously high cholesterol

Belinda O’Brien, 62. From Surrey, works in fundraising for charity.

Divorced with two adult children.

Weighs 10.8lb and is 5ft 5in.

Says, “I don’t smoke or eat poorly, but I do enjoy two or three glasses of wine several times a week.

“My weight always fluctuates between a size 12 and 16, but I enjoy being active, walking other people’s dogs and being in my yard.”

dr Mace says Belinda’s body fat is very high.

Although she walks quite a bit, which likely helped raise her good cholesterol and lower her risk of heart disease, her total cholesterol is much higher than healthy.

She should increase her activity level and eat less saturated fats found in red meat and dairy products.

Due to her weight and age, she is at an increased risk of osteoporosis, so she needs to exercise with weights to strengthen her bones and supporting muscles and protect herself from the disease – brisk walking is ideal.

dr Heaversedge says since a glass of wine can make up three units, Belinda could consume 30 units a week, more than double a woman’s recommended limit.

BELINDA’S RESULTS

BMI 24.7 – borderline

✘✘ Body Fat 38%

Waist-to-height ratio 48 – healthy fat distribution

Activity level (1-11) 6

Lung age 26 years

✘✘ Total cholesterol 7.61 mmol/l – well above the healthy range

Diabetes Risk A 100% risk of developing diabetes in the next ten years

Risk of coronary artery disease 7% risk of developing it over the next ten years (lower than the average for Belinda’s age of 12%)

Blood pressure 120/70 (OK)

liver function normal

Every time we drink, liver cells die and obesity also damages the liver, so over time the combination can lead to inflammation, scarring and eventually cirrhosis.

dr Ashton says if Belinda isn’t lowering her total cholesterol through diet changes, she may need statins because it puts her at risk for heart disease.

Belinda’s Response There are so many very obese people now that I feel fit for my age.

So I’m really surprised that my total cholesterol is high.

I will change my diet as I don’t want to risk the health problems that come with it, and I will exercise more to prevent osteoporosis.

However, I am no less comfortable with a size 46 than I was before my exam and am pleased that my regular exercise program has improved the other results.

Is size 14 big for a girl?

The average size of an American woman has historically been reported as a size 14.

What Do Women’s Clothing Sizes (S, M, L) and Numbers Mean?

As enjoyable as clothing shopping is, it can also be frustrating, annoying and frankly not the best for one’s self-esteem. The range of sizes offered to women is utterly undiverse (and don’t even get me started on the unflattering lighting in the fitting rooms). The amount of time I’ve spent in a dimly lit fitting room contorting my boobs to fit into a swimsuit that doesn’t offer mix-and-match sizing is, well, a lot. We all have different bodies, we all take different forms. So why are women consistently confined to a scale that does not include such variations?

I wrote down my thoughts on gaining weight, losing weight and trying to keep it off. it’s all hard But there is certainly room for improvement when it comes to women’s clothing sizes, and that’s still an understatement. And – no surprise – as it turns out, the information retailers have been using is completely out of date. After all, there is no one ideal height or weight for all women.

Ahead, Cassie Christopher, MS, RD, CD, and Lynn M. Yudofsky, MD explain how to determine a healthy weight for your body, along with the factors that influence our individual sizes and body types. Read on to learn more about the average weight for women in America and how to determine the weight range that is healthiest for you.

Meet the Expert Cassie Christopher, MS, RD, CD, is a Registered Dietitian and Health Coach who advises women in their 40s and 60s on how to take control of their emotional eating habits.

Lynn M. Yudofsky, MD, is Director of Behavioral Health and Medicine for weight care brand Found Health, Inc.

The average height for women in America

Stocksy

The average height of an American woman has historically been given as a size 14. The clothing industry has taken this somewhat into account and adjusted their sizes. However, most labels didn’t even do that; The majority of clothing lines still sell up to a size 12 and that’s it. Then a 2016 study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education revealed that “the average height of an American woman is now between 16 and 18, which is an increase from 10-year-old data showing most women in the US were wearing a size 14.” This information sheds even more light on the need for clothing in sizes larger than previously acceptable numbers. It’s really upsetting, and it’s about time something tangible was done to correct the long-standing oversight.

The study authors noted that the average waist circumference has increased by 2.6 inches since 1988. According to a report by The Revelist, ‘In conducting the study, the researchers write that they hope that women may feel relieved to know the average dress size they wear is larger than [they] thought,’ and that it could change the public’s perception of ‘average’ size changed.

The average weight for women in America

According to a 2018 study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average weight of women over 20 is 170.5 pounds. While this number is thought to be the average weight of American women, Christopher urges women not to fixate on that number. “Knowing the average weight of Americans or anyone else in the world is irrelevant to an individual woman’s health,” she says.

dr Yudofsky also says that instead of focusing on numbers, you should focus on what’s the best weight for your body. “The ‘best weight’ for one person can be very different for another. This is due to the fact that everyone has a different body composition, unique medical history, different hormone levels and also different preferences,” she explains.

“The ‘best weight’ for one person can be very different for another.”

How to determine your healthiest weight range

“Although most practitioners initially access a person’s BMI, this is just one data point among many that should be considered when determining a healthy weight. Equally important is that people find [that] weight that also makes them feel like their own ‘best self’ — and that comes in all shapes and sizes,” says Yudofsky.

If you want to know your body mass index (BMI), use a BMI calculator from a trusted organization like the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Based on your height and weight, the calculator determines your index number. Once you have your BMI, consult the BMI categories to see if you’re classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. Although BMI is an indication of body fat, it’s not the only factor involved in determining a healthy weight range. The circumference of your waistline and other risk factors for obesity-related ailments should also be evaluated by a doctor.

However, if you’re planning to lose weight on your own, Christopher warns about limiting your eating and lifestyle choices. “When making the decision to lose weight, the healthiest things to do are set smaller goals, use non-restrictive diet and lifestyle plans, and work on body acceptance (regardless of size). [If] someone feels restricted and has extensive lists of things they can’t eat, it usually leads to later weight gain as willpower wanes,” she says.

When navigating how to change your lifestyle and eating habits, Christopher recommends starting small. “If you set a smaller goal and then practice maintenance behaviors (like a significant increase in physical activity, according to the National Weight Control Registry and the American College of Sports Medicine), you may have a better chance of long-term weight loss success, which makes it all the more difficult.” is success,” she explains.

If you want to lose weight, start by setting small goals for yourself, including learning to love yourself.

What other factors affect weight?

Genetics: “Genetics can certainly play a role, and genes have been found that may increase the likelihood of obesity. That doesn’t mean that the associated risk of being overweight is negated, but that someone might be able to focus more freely on behaviors rather than a number on the scale,” explains Dr. Yudofsky. Although your family history isn’t the be-all and end-all to influence your height, you should know that it can explain why you have a certain body type and weight.

Christopher says hormones are also linked to weight gain and weight fluctuations. “For example, the stress hormone cortisol causes weight to shift from other parts of the body to the abdomen,” she adds. Age: Age certainly plays a role in our weight. “Age matters because the older we get, the harder it is to lose weight. This is due to changes in hormone levels, body composition, and metabolism,” notes Dr. Yudofsky.

Remember, weight isn’t everything

Elize Strydom/Getty Images

Model Sonny Turner decided to do her part to stop the women’s sizing craze by posting a photo on her Instagram page. The caption specifically spelled out her grievances with swimsuit designers. “[High street] bikinis are not for women of my body type. Neither do [the] majority of online stores,” she wrote. “We need straps that aren’t that tight… it’s like our necks are about to tear off. We need bikini bottoms that don’t give us wedges when we walk. We need string bikinis that don’t expose our labia. We need swimsuits that fit over our hips without pulling down the neck of the costume and causing neck pain.”

If I had any musical talent, I would turn their bullet points into a pop anthem. The fact of the matter is that women wearing clothes that are considered “plus-size” (a word that also has no concrete meaning) are left with few options. Our society has decided, without justification, that women of all shapes, curves and edges shouldn’t be comfortable in their shape.

Our society has decided, without justification, that women of all shapes, curves and edges shouldn’t be comfortable in their shape.

We grow up learning to feel bad about our bodies for no other reason than that they don’t look like altered versions of those pictured on billboards. It’s oppressive to only have access to swimwear that fits certain idealized bodies — the same bodies that are essentially cooked up behind someone’s computer. It has to stop. Here’s hoping it will. In the meantime, we’ll post about this as much as we can as resistance, since weight and height aren’t the only indicators of a healthy person.

The final result

There is no ideal height, body type, or weight for all women, and weight isn’t the only factor when looking at the bigger picture of a person’s overall health… but there are areas that are considered healthy for every woman Person. And it’s your physical and mental health — not the number on the scale — that counts.

Is size 14 a large or XL?

We may have become accustomed to constant chopping and changing between an S or an M, but most of us are in agreement that a size 14 is by no means an XL, as it was described in Asos’s size guide this week.

What Do Women’s Clothing Sizes (S, M, L) and Numbers Mean?

Online shopping for fast fashion is essentially an extreme sport: rolling the dice to see if the picture matches the product, the inevitable um and ahh of a large order, when it’s followed by a £4.99 delivery charge. The time we gain by avoiding endless lines, we lose to the tremors that accompany the fear of being overwhelmed by the choice.

Then of course there is the sizing. Women can switch between two or three sizes during a shopping spree, not because of sudden weight loss or gain, but based on the whims of where we buy our clothes. We may have gotten used to constantly switching between S and M, but most of us agree that a size 14 is by no means XL, as outlined in this week’s Asos size guide.

An Asos spokesman said the size XL on some of its third-party brands has equivalent measurements to a size 14 in its own size chart. The same guide dubiously labeled a size 12 as tall, even though the average British woman is two sizes larger, at a size 16. Shoppers were understandably outraged – and Britain was on the brink of a body dysmorphia crisis, with almost 25% of women feeling the same way uncomfortable in their own skin and social media constantly distorts our ideal of what the human body looks like – the last thing we need is for women smaller than the national average to be labeled “extra tall”. It’s reminiscent of the way fashion views everyone as overweight.

This raises another problem: our instinctive reluctance to be seen as “bigger,” which reflects a society that continues to berate those who are. Many felt the labeling of Asos was more of an accusation than a factual inaccuracy, with the apparent smearing of those who were labeled ‘extra large’ but felt they did not deserve such a defamatory label being scandalous. It underscored the slander experienced on a daily basis by those who wear the XL size. We may have become adept at adjusting and accepting our arbitrarily ascribed sizes, but there wouldn’t have been the same outrage if a size 14 had been considered small because the connotations weren’t stigmatizing.

Incidents like this are a reminder of why it’s important for body-positive influencers and activists to work to reclaim the word “fat” as a neutral descriptor. When it comes to larger models, the preferred term is “plus size”; When retailers stock larger garments they are often referred to as their ‘Curve’ range. “Fat” is still derogatory for much of society because the idea of being taller continues to evoke excessive disgust. In a culture that demands that you work hard on your body to be “bikini-ready” for the beach and “look your best” (meaning “slimest”) on your wedding day, it’s no wonder the ridiculous size guide is outraged by Asos. Fat is viewed as a condition that is inherently objectionable and only stops when we change our attitude towards bodies, whatever the label they wear says it is.

What Do Women’s Clothing Sizes (S, M, L) and Numbers Mean?

Knowing how to interpret sizes is an invaluable skill in the apparel industry where I work in supply chain sourcing.

Explain women’s dress sizes

I work in the clothing industry so I know that finding the right size can often be difficult. Sizes vary widely over time, clothing is often mislabeled, and wearers’ personal sizing preference (baggy vs. fitted) can lead to errors. You can buy the perfect size for a person’s body and it still isn’t the “right” fit.

Unfortunately, to make matters worse, there is no industry standard for size. Each brand uses their own random measurements to determine their size labels and this means that a person who fits a size M on one brand may need an L on another brand. You just can’t know for sure if something will fit you unless you try it on.

Instead of looking at the size labels, looking at the measurements is the best way to proceed. Here are some rough sizing basics that might help you find the right size and fit. In this article, we’re going to look at what all those letters and numbers mean in terms of size.

Standard US size names and measurements

How to find the right size when shopping online. Niceh Khusnunnisa via Unsplash; canvas

How to measure to find your size

Use a soft, flexible tape measure to take your measurements.

Make sure you lay it flat and tight (but not tight) and keep it parallel to the floor.

Measure against the skin and not over clothing.

Don’t hold your breath or suck in as it defeats the purpose! 🙂

How to measure your chest:

Place the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. It helps if you hold up both arms and have a friend take the measurement.

How to measure your waist:

Place the tape measure around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your belly button. Try to keep the tape measure parallel to the floor.

How to measure your hips:

Measure around the widest part of your hips, usually just below the hip bones. Keep the tape measure flat and even.

What if I don’t have a tape measure?

Don’t worry – just use a piece of yarn or twine or even a shoelace and then measure that with a ruler or ruler.

Should I measure my body or my clothes?

Measure your body, not your clothes. If you were copying and sewing a new garment, you would want to measure the clothing yourself, but if you’re just hoping to find the garment the right size, then measure your body.

When you buy pants or bras online

Hello, I came across women’s pants that said “xUU” (e.g. 10 xuu) and I have no idea what that means. Can you explain??

TurtleDog (author) on December 15, 2010:

Very well said Amy! Lots of really good points about the odd variance you can sometimes get between the advertised size and actual size. Even things that are less thought of, like lab gloves (latex), fit differently. In this case it usually has to do with the country of origin (and population 🙂

Thanks for the comment! Really appreciate it.

Amy Becherer from St. Louis, MO on December 14, 2010:

Very interesting topic. Since I do most of my shopping online, I check sizing charts (European clothing is generally less generous than American sizing) and always read reviews before making a purchase. Certain manufacturers appear to calibrate sizes differently (Pilco jeans sold at Anthropologie are notorious for being “tight on the thighs, regardless of size, and generally the more expensive, the more generous the material). I often wonder if the motivation for expensive lines is more advertising to flatter the consumer in order to increase sales. The type of material (stretch factor) can play a role. The cut of a dress can create a design that is more or less indulgent depending on your body type. Shoes can be tricky, and I’ve found buyer reviews are the best indicator of how well fitting a product is. Thank you for this informative and well-crafted article on an interesting topic.

TurtleDog (author) on October 24, 2010:

Hi! Thank you for the great question. I’d suggest double-checking my answer with the store or website you’re trying to buy from, but I believe women in most Halloween costumes are between the ages of 16-18, and even a wider range of 14-18 lie where you shop. It’s best to double-check, as Halloween costumes vary so much in style and size that it can be difficult to pin down an exact number.

Thanks again for reading!
