Channel 4 has commissioned a new comedy-entertainment series from RDF, which will see celebrities reading steamy fanfiction played by a group of similar-looking puppets.
In each episode of The Really Really Rude Puppet Show (w/t), Mel Giedroyc invites a different celebrity to read an erotic piece of creative writing in which the celebrity stars. Each character in the story is brought to life by a cast of puppets, voiced entirely by the celebrity and Mel.
According to @ao3commentoftheday, Channel 4 officials are also already commenting on AO3 works and asking authors to write RPFs for their show. AO3 is currently deleting the comments as spam.
What is happening now is a problem in more ways than one. Aside from writers being exploited for their free content, their intended celebrity reads their erotic fiction through puppets to the effect that they make fun of the written content (despite the fact that it is about women and queer sexual expression) and may make these celebrities feel very uncomfortable.
It was already mentioned in @ao3commentoftheday’s video, but TO ALL RPF AUTHORS AND UK RPF AUTHORS IN PARTICULAR – HIDE YOUR RPF WORKS, both current and future work.
On AO3 you have the option to privatize individual works so that they are only visible to registered AO3 users (for those who are not AO3 users, your AO3 mutual can send you an invitation). Tumblr also has settings to hide your blog from external search engines like Google and make it visible only to registered Tumblr users. I’m not sure what features are available on Wattpad or FFN in terms of hiding fan fiction works, but if anyone uses these sites, please make sure you hide your RPF works from the public whenever possible .
As a fan fiction community, it is especially important now that we continue to prevent our work from being exploited and ridiculed.
