Keeping your side of the street clean

“Keep your side of the road clean” is a saying I picked up from a colleague and good friend of mine when I was working in addiction treatment. It’s something I’ve adopted and applied to many clients and in my own life. It’s really quite simple… instead of focusing on what OTHERS need to do or how OTHERS need to change to make something work, you simply need to take care of yourself and what you can change and/or improve. By focusing on yourself; including your behavior and reactions to things – you have the ability to influence a situation. In most cases, concentrating on what another person needs to do gets you absolutely nowhere – since we cannot control another person. So…let’s try this: The next time you find yourself in a frustrating situation with a friend, spouse, sibling, or other relationship, take your focus off what you expect from the other person and try instead, focus on what you might be doing differently. Can you change your reaction? change perspective? If so, you may find that the other person responds differently to you because of the changes you made. Much luck!

Keeping Your Side of the Street Clean in Recovery

Keep your side of the road clean in recovery

Keeping your side of the road clean during recovery is a fundamental principle in 12-step programs.

Through the steps we learn that we have been involved in many things that have happened in our lives. Not blaming others for our circumstances is a common lesson in 12-Step Recovery. Once we realize that we are not a victim of circumstance, the concept of “keep your side of the road clean” applies. It’s also a good principle for life in general: be responsible and accountable for your own actions. When we do something to harm someone else, which we all will do, do it right.

Taking responsibility is a foreign word to many in recovery. It can be difficult to see beyond our own emotional baggage. A common coping mechanism is to point the finger at others instead of looking at yourself.

Keeping your side of the road clean in recovery means making good choices and acknowledging bad choices. It means developing empathy and appreciation for others.

Part of living a spiritual life is keeping the side of the road clean during recovery. Before getting sober, emotional reactions tend to take over life and cause a lot of chaos and destruction. Family, job, friendships, money: everything is affected. When you stay spiritually grounded, you tend to live proactively. The emotional ups and downs of life don’t overwhelm you. You start to trust yourself, knowing that no matter what, you have done your best and will be able to face any challenges that come up.

Keep your side of the street clean

When we are in relationships, whether with neighbors, family members, or co-workers, it can sometimes be difficult to see what your actual responsibilities are. Keeping your side of the road clean means fulfilling your responsibilities in a healthy, clear and direct way. What’s across the street is someone else’s responsibility. Life is easier and more manageable when we focus on our responsibilities and not others.
