Why are there dog breeds with blue tongues?

It’s important not to confuse naturally blue tongues in dogs with tongues that turn blue or purple due to illness. If you have a dog who isn’t a blue-tongued breed, check out this AnimalWised article on why your dog has a purple tongue. There are many myths and theories about blue tongued dogs. Scientists have been unable to agree on the exact reason for naturally occurring blue-black or purple tongues in dogs. Some theories suggest that the blue coloration in a dog’s tongue is due to a genetic mutation that causes a greater concentration of melanin, or pigment cells, in the tongue, resulting in its distinctive hue. Do you know which dog breeds have dark tongues? Here are 9 of the best blue-tongued dog breeds.
Dog breeds with blue tongues
Various dog breeds exhibit naturally occurring blue tongues or blue-black spotted tongues. Here are the breeds we will be looking at in this article: Shar Pei
chow chow
German shepherd dog
Akita
rottweiler
border collie
Korean Jindo
Tibetan Mastiff
Pomeranian Of these, the Shar Pei and the Chow Chow are the only two dog breeds with fully blue tongues in all individuals. Of the other breeds we will be looking at, only a few individuals have blue pigmentation on their tongues. The individuals of these breeds may either show a few bruises on their tongues or have larger dark spots that make their entire tongue appear bluish. It used to be believed that other breeds displaying blue tongues meant they had some Chow Chow blood in their heritage. This is not the case, however, as pure breeds can also have bluetongues. These are likely caused by excessive pigmentation in the individual dog, much like birthmarks in humans. Below is more information on each of the blue tongued dog breeds.

It has a large head and a full, slightly darker muzzle that gives it a gentle and friendly appearance. Shar Peis are calm and affectionate dogs, although they tend to be wary of strangers. In China, there are various legends about how the Chow Chow got its blue tongue. The chow chow has a large head and a short, slightly flat muzzle. It has small erect ears and round eyes. The Chow’s coat is usually plush and can be either long or short. Also, it has more fur around its neck, giving it the appearance of a lion. For more information on this breed, you can find another AnimalWised article on the Chow Chow and its blue tongue here.
3. German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is an easily recognizable dog known for its looks, intelligence, loyalty, and courage. Although not very common, some German Shepherds have black or blue spots on their tongues. However, in the German Shepherd breed, it only occurs in a few individual dogs. You should be aware of your dog’s natural tongue color and be aware of any changes in your dog’s tongue. If your German Shepherd normally has a pink tongue and you suddenly notice some black spots or purple coloring, consult a veterinarian to rule out any health problems.

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to be licked by a giraffe, you’ll find that their 50 cm long tongues can appear purple, bluish or almost black. This is due to the density of dark “melanin” color pigments in them.
There’s still no definitive explanation for this, but the leading theory is that the melanin provides extra UV protection and keeps their sensitive tongues from getting sunburned when they eat high.

What is the muscle from the collarbone to the upper arm?
The deltoid is attached by tendons to the skeleton at the clavicle (collarbone), scapula (shoulder blade), and humerus (upper arm bone). The deltoid is widest at the top of the shoulder and narrows to its apex as it travels down the arm.
Why Do Chow Chows Have Blue Tongues? – American Kennel Club
continued from above…
The deltoid has three origins: the lateral end of the clavicle, the acromion of the scapula at the top of the shoulder, and the spine of the scapula. Each origin gives rise to its own fibrous ligament, with the anterior ligament forming at the clavicle, the lateral fibers at the acromion, and the posterior fibers at the spine of the scapula. The ligaments fuse as they approach the point of insertion at the deltoid tubercle of the humerus.
The deltoid has three distinct functions that correspond to the three muscle fiber bands. The contraction of the anterior fibers flexes and medially rotates the arm by pulling the humerus towards the clavicle. Flexion and medial rotation of the arm moves the arm forward, as when reaching forward or throwing a ball with the hand. The lateral fibers abduct the arm by pulling the humerus towards the acromion. Abduction of the arm causes the arm to move away from the body, as in lateral extension. The contraction of the posterior fibers straightens and laterally rotates the arm by pulling the humerus toward the spine of the scapula. Extension and lateral rotation move the arm backwards, as in backward reaching or wrapping to throw an underhand ball.

6 Dogs With Black Tongues — Why Do Dogs Have Black Tongues?
If you’ve ever seen a Chow Chow then you’ve probably noticed their unique blue and black tongue. Chow Chows, like Chinese Shar Peis, actually require a blue and black tongue in their breed standard. And believe it or not, these breeds aren’t the only ones who can exhibit a tongue color other than pink. There are more than 30 dogs with black spotted tongues, but contrary to popular belief, this does not indicate Chow Chow or Shar Pei bloodlines in their breed.
Just like in Chow Chows, Chinese Shar Peis, and some other breeds, solid blue-black tongues are caused by the same thing as spotted tongues: heavy pigmentation, according to the American Kennel Club. Pigment spots on your dog’s tongue are usually nothing to worry about. These darker spots are likely the result of microscopic granules of melanin presenting as flat, pigmented areas on your dog’s tongue, just like a human can have freckles or birthmarks. Many breeds are known for displaying spotted tongues, but there are six dog breeds that are known for their black tongues, making them particularly unique.
Why Do Chow Chows Have Blue Tongues? – American Kennel Club
Everything about the chow chow captures the imagination, from its magnificent, lion-like appearance to its long and storied history, but nothing catches the eye like its tongue. The chow chow’s blue-black tongue sets it apart from almost every other breed of dog. But why do chows have blue tongues? We reached out to Linda Love Banghart, a staff member at The Chow Chow Club, Inc., to find out why chow chows have blue tongues and to get a little more information about this unique breed of dog.
How Did Chows Get Blue Tongues?
Chow chows, also known as chows, are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. They appear in Chinese artifacts as early as 206 BC. BC, and other evidence suggests this race goes back much further. According to Banghart, despite this long history, “there is no documentation as to why chow chows have a blue-black tongue,” but fictional explanations exist. Some of these stories include the belief that when the world was created, chow chows were allowed to lick up all the little bits of blue sky that fell to earth as the stars were put in their places, or that they inherited their tongues from a bear . While the chow chow’s appearance is certainly bearish, the real reason for the prominent tongue remains unknown.
What we do know is that chows had their blue tongues in the 1820s when they were exhibited at London Zoo as “the wild dogs of China”. Keepers noted the blue-black coloration of her mouth and tongue, and “when controlled breeding began,” says Banghart, “this unique trait was used as a prerequisite for identifying purebred offspring.”
This requirement is still valid today. The breed standard states:
Mouth and tongue – rims of lips black, mouth tissues mostly black, gums preferably black. A solid black mouth is ideal. The top and edges of the tongue are solid blue-black, the darker the better. Disqualifying Fault – The upper surface or edges of the tongue are red or pink, or with one or more spots of red or pink.
Does Bruising On A Dog’s Tongue Mean The Dog Is Partial Food?
You may have heard someone point to a bruise on a dog’s tongue and tell you, “That means the dog is part chow.”
It’s not that easy. While a blue and black tongue could mean a dog has Chow Chow in its bloodlines, these spots are also regularly found in many pure breeds, including Newfoundlands and Labrador Retrievers. The difference between these spots and the Chow Chow’s tongue is that these spots are not considered hereditary and can simply be random pigmented skin cells, while the Chow Chow’s blue tongue is one of its distinguishing features.
Can chow chow tongues be different colors?
Chow Chows are not born with blue tongues. In fact, just like other breeds, Chow Chow puppies have pink tongues. The blue-black color develops when their eyes open. “Sometimes the pigment change is slower, but tongue pigment always needs to be complete by about six months of age,” says Banghart. “A Chow Chow with incomplete pigment is not eligible to compete in conformation dog shows and will be disqualified from the breed standard.”
What other breeds have blue tongues?
The Chow’s blue tongue makes it unique in the canine world, with one exception: the Chinese Shar-Pei. As with the Chow-Chow, the Shar-Pei’s breed standard calls for bluish-black pigmentation in the mouth and on the tongue, with exceptions for diluted colors, which may have lavender pigmentation. (According to the DNA study of Chinese Shar-Pei coat color, “dilute” refers primarily to nasal pigmentation, not coat color. Any nose other than black is considered diluted.)
Chow Chows and Chinese Shar-Pei likely have distant ancestry, which explains the similarity between the two. They also share their blue-black tongues with polar bears, giraffes, and several breeds of cattle.
Think the Chow Chow is the breed for you? You can find chow chow puppies from reputable breeders on the AKC Marketplace.
