1. Chow-chow dogs

Chow Chow dogs, which originated in northern China and are often referred to as “black-tongued lions,” have been described and owned by rulers throughout history. In Chinese, they are called Songshi-Quan, which means “swollen lion dog”! Their blue tongue is a dominant trait of all Chow Chows, so they even have mixed breed Chow Chows and is a distinctive part of their breed specifications!

2. Giraffes

Giraffe tongues are very long and have the ability to latch on to plants. They have thickened papillae and extra saliva on their grasping tongues to protect them from sharp thorns and plants. The deltoid has three origins: the lateral end of the clavicle, the acromion of the scapula at the top of the shoulder, and the spine of the scapula. Each origin gives rise to its own fibrous ligament, with the anterior ligament forming at the clavicle, the lateral fibers at the acromion, and the posterior fibers at the spine of the scapula. The ligaments fuse as they approach the point of insertion at the deltoid tubercle of the humerus.

The deltoid has three distinct functions that correspond to the three muscle fiber bands. The contraction of the anterior fibers flexes and medially rotates the arm by pulling the humerus towards the clavicle. Flexion and medial rotation of the arm moves the arm forward, as when reaching forward or throwing a ball with the hand. The lateral fibers abduct the arm by pulling the humerus towards the acromion. Abduction of the arm causes the arm to move away from the body, as in lateral extension. The contraction of the posterior fibers straightens and laterally rotates the arm by pulling the humerus toward the spine of the scapula. Extension and lateral rotation move the arm backwards, as in backward reaching or wrapping to throw an underhand ball.
