Protein Skimmer Filters
The effectiveness of traditional protein skimmers or foam fractionators in fresh water is limited by the lower density in fresh water and hence the ability to form sufficiently small bubbles with sufficient surface area to attract the organic waste.
Since the Clarity Protein Skimmer is based on a completely different approach, the Clarity Protein Skimmer does not have this limitation. This leads to excellent efficiency even in fresh water and opens up many exciting applications for the Clarity Protein Skimmer.
The Clarity Protein Skimmer regulates the oxygen content in the water.
During the normal process of feeding fish and breaking down organic matter, the oxygen levels in the water are altered. These environmental changes are undesirable for the fish and lead to increased stress and unhealthy conditions. The workings of the Clarity Protein Skimmer restore the oxygen balance in the water as part of the foam making process.
The Clarity Protein Skimmer breaks down ammonia and nitrite into nitrite before foaming.
Clarity Foaming 1 Hour Later As water trickles down the Clarity Protein Skimmer aerator tower, bacteria attached to biorings break down organic compounds into simpler, less toxic substances. The most important example of this process is the breakdown of ammonia into nitrite and finally nitrate. This reduces the toxicity of the compounds and results in more efficient removal of organic compounds.
Ozone treatment can be combined with the Clarity Protein Skimmer, resulting in stable water conditions despite severe fluctuations in incoming water quality.
The Clarity Protein Skimmer requires little maintenance. The Clarity protein skimmer is easy to install and can operate for several months without maintenance (depending on the quality of the feed water). Because there are no moving parts and therefore no wear and tear, the Clarity protein skimmer has a long service life, which increases the financial investment in this unique protein skimmer / foam fractionator.

Function: To remove dissolved organic compounds to make your water cleaner for your koi.
Clarity™ is a unique protein skimmer/foam fractionator with clear benefits:
Why a protein skimmer / foam fractionator?
Water in closed areas (e.g. fish tank, pond or lake) contains a certain level of organic waste and nutrients that affect the water quality. The organic compounds are not directly visible; However, once the level is high enough, the effects can be seen in the water. Some of these effects are:
Increased algae and plant growth
Decreased Clarity
Worse fish health
discoloration
Unpleasant smell and taste
There are many devices and methods to eliminate some of these effects (e.g. mechanical, chemical or biological filters or simply water exchange), but protein skimmers or foam fractionators remain the preferred choice for removing organic waste from water.
The organic waste (also referred to as Dissolved Organic Compounds = DOC) results from decomposed plant parts, fertilizers, fish feed and excrement from farmed fish that have been decomposed and dissolved in the water.
High concentrations of DOC in water are undesirable because they result in:
Less oxygen
More bacteria, algae and parasites
Build up of toxins for the fish
Overall, this leads to unhealthy conditions for the fish, affecting both the health and growth conditions of the fish.
Protein Skimmers, also called Foam Fractionators, work on the principle that most DOC and nutrients in water have bipolar properties, meaning that part of the compound prefers air and the other part prefers water. This means that these compounds are attracted to air bubbles in the water. When enough DOC is attached to the air bubble, stable foam is generated and collected. The smaller the air bubbles, the larger the surface area and the more effective the Protein Skimmer or Foam Fractionator is.

Principle of foam formation:
How it works Clarity™ consists of an integrated unit that performs several distinct functions: breaking down complex organic matter into simpler, less toxic forms (ammonia -> nitrite -> nitrate) aerating the water, restoring the correct balance of O2, CO2 and N2 in the water Formation of foam with organic compounds (DOC) Collects foam in the patented foam collection unit Functions 1 – 3 are performed in the wash tower column and function 4 is performed in the patented foam collection unit. Together, these features result in a highly effective system for removing organic waste and resulting in ultra-pure water conditions.
Results
Clarity™ has been tested and found to be highly effective at removing organic waste in both fresh and salt water and in actual practical situations:
Efficient removal of nitrate from fresh and salt water
The test was conducted in 600L reservoirs by adding nutrients of varying salinity and measuring nitrate levels in the water after 2 hours of Clarity treatment.
Removal of nitrogen, nitrate and nitrite from a fish pond
Treatment with Clarity™ resulted in an approximately 40% reduction in total nitrogen, nitrite and nitrate in a 30,000 liter fish pond after only 9 days with circulation every 5 hours.
Please note that the water source contained approximately 67 kg of live fish which were fed 0.8 kg of feed daily throughout the test.
Technical information
Clarity™ was developed in different sizes to meet the different needs of users. For more information on each product, please contact us or your nearest distributor.

For best performance, we recommend a good quality pump with sufficient power to pump the required volume of water at least to the top of the skimmer, including the height from the water level to where the skimmer is installed.
Foam Fractionators or Protein Skimmers
My ponds are finally coming out of winter and the endless pursuit of better water quality this year has begun! I found this great article by Don Harrawood, Southwest Koi and Pond Association El Paso, TX. It’s great detailed information on how to build one yourself and I wanted to share it with all of our readers. There are many commercial versions available for sale (see an image in use below) – but DIY is so much cheaper and more satisfying!
Foam fractionator or protein skimmer:
Have you noticed foam on your pond? Even though you have a good filter, your water is dark in color? These conditions are generally caused by excess dissolved organic solids, a condition that generally cannot be eliminated by the filter alone. Water changes tend to clear the water; However, this will most likely be a recurring condition after a short period of time. One must find the cause of these conditions and find a way to prevent them in the future.
Dissolved organic solids build up through the metabolism of koi and other aquatic organisms and release their digestive products into solution in the pond water. Protein levels in the water can also rise rapidly from the inappropriate use of high-protein fish food. Constituents from uneaten fish food can get into the water and cause foaming. Other compounds that cause foam include a variety of fats, fatty acids, carbohydrates, metals, detritus, phytoplankton, and trace minerals. Spawning activity can result in a foamy pond due to the release of large amounts of proteins (in the form of eggs and sperm) into the water. All of these materials together cause a tremendous amount of various organic solids to be dissolved in the pond water. These dissolved solids, when exposed to water movement such as waterfalls, lead to the formation of foam.
Foam fractionation, or protein skimming, is a process that removes dissolved organic compounds from a liquid by adsorbing them on the surface of fine vesicles. The bubbles collect proteins and other dissolved substances and carry them to the top of a device where the foam collects in a beaker. Here the foam condenses into a liquid that can then be easily drained from the system. The material that collects in the beaker appears as a pale greenish-yellow liquid. The constant removal of these compounds helps purify the pond water and results in better overall water quality.
All foam fractionators have key features in common. For one to work effectively, the following characteristics must be present: A large amount of air/water interface must be created.
A large amount of air/water interface must be created.
Water containing dissolved organic solids must be able to flow through the air/water interface.
The bubbles must collect to form foam.
Some of the water in the foam must drain away without the bubbles bursting prematurely.
The drained foam must be separated from the main water and disposed of.
Bubble size is the most important of these parameters and is controlled within the design of the protein skimmer. An efficient air diffuser or venturi plays an important role in creating the smallest possible bubbles that ensure maximum surface area for adsorption of the organic compounds. Smaller bubbles also rise more slowly, allowing for longer contact time with the process water.
The 1 inch diameter. x 12″ pipe slides up and down in reamed bushing. You should make such an interference fit so it doesn’t slide too freely, otherwise the foam collector won’t stay lifted in a fixed spot.
The foam collector can be any size. For example, use a gallon bucket with a hole in the bottom and a 1 inch bulkhead attached to the bucket and pipe with appropriate fittings. A hose can similarly be added to the bucket to drain the foam.
This is a typical protein skimmer that can be built by virtually anyone using ABS or PVC tubing. The cost of building this device is less than $100.
The water is pumped through the venturi into which fine bubbles are introduced and enters the skimmer body. The addition of air from the venturi creates a large volume of oxygen-rich water that flows through the main column. The foam and air then rise above the water surface and pass through the 1” standpipe, collecting the foam in the chamber above, which must either be manually emptied or is fitted with a drain to waste. The main stream of water then returns to the pond through the 3 inch return pipe.
When installing a foam fractionator for the first time, large amounts of foam and greenish-yellow liquid are initially produced. As the DOC concentration decreases over time, the rate at which the foam is formed and removed also decreases. If it’s running continuously and the residual problem is eliminated, it should keep the water free of excess dissolved organic solids. A noticeable improvement in water clarity is generally noted after a few days of operation.
