Kojagiri Lakshmi Puja
The Autumn Festival which had begun with Durga Pujo ends with another long-awaited Lakshmi Pujo or more precisely Kojagari Lakshmi Pujo for Bengali, falling on Kojagari Purnima or Sharad Purnima as it is known elsewhere in other parts of India.
But for the Bengalis, especially those originating from what was formerly East Bengal (now Bangladesh), this Kojagari Lakshmi Pujo was simply more than just a religious observance. Here it was more about holding on to its cultural heritage and traditions. This enabled the striving for cultural identity to be established among the indigenous people. The strong differences in linguistic and cultural characteristics had led to the “great gulf between Ghoti and Bangal”. And it would be interesting to know how the partition of Bengal, refugee problems and economic marginalization have contributed to so many of these differences.
Seventy years later this divide is almost obsolete and once popularized by the East Bengali community, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is well received by all across the borders.
Interestingly, this is a different period where the cultural attributes of each Bengali community are very much on display, while Ghoti households worship Ma Lakshmi in the form of an idol, Kojagari Lakshmi Pujo has a different meaning in Bangal household overall.
Coming from such a family, I had heard stories from my mother and grandmother about the elaborate preparations they made during the Lakshmi puja in Dhaka. The preparations started a week before, guests were invited, the whole clan gathered and this one day was much more than religious rituals. It was also the time for bonhomie, get-togethers, music and time to indulge in a giant hard drive.
Shora / Clay Disc for Kojagiri Lakshmi Puja –
In our homes, Ma Lakshmi is usually worshiped in the form of ‘shora’ or ‘paut’, a red clay disk on which artists have drawn images of the goddess. Lakshmi Shora / Paut usually has Ma Lakshmi in the middle with Jaya – Vijaya on the side. But in our house I have observed that Durga Shora (see picture) is usually used for Lakshmi Puja. Perhaps because Lakshmi is believed to be the daughter of Ma Durga. The worship of Lakshmi through the use of Shoras involves a series of rituals that readily reveal their root connection to an ancient agrarian-based culture. This tradition is still followed in my home up until the time my mother used to perform elaborate pujas.
Nowadays people had chosen the easier way and idols had replaced the shora in most homes. As a result, this unique art of Shora painting (few artists continue this in Kalighat area) is dying out in West Bengal and is on the verge of extinction. However, it is being revived and revived as a traditional art form in Bangladesh.
Aside from shora, there is another unique element of Bangal Lakshmi Puja, the banana boat or sapttari.
Sapt-Tari for Lakshmi Pujo
Banana Boats are made from banana stalks and their fibres, complete with a mast and adorned with colorful flags. These are considered trading ships and are filled with grain, Hartiki, coins, cowries (formerly used as currency) and other items. Unlike the rest of India, we worship Goddess Lakshmi as dhanya lakshmi, for granary wealth, and not as dhan lakshmi for monetary wealth. This difference in concept and ideologies is very marked even between the two Bengali communities.
The Essence of Kojagiri Lakshmi Puja
Although I am not a religious and ritualistic person, I do Kojagari Lakshmi Puja at home just for this wonderful essence. The beautiful thought process that underlies this tradition. And second, to continue with cultural heritage and my quest for cultural identity amidst the melting pot of cosmopolitan culture. It allows you to reconnect with your roots and relive those soulful moments that remind us of the homeland of our long-lost ancestors.
At my house, we usually do this puja at Thanksgiving. We thank Mother Earth for the good rice harvest, the abundance of fish and good trade. The banana boats are nothing but a symbol of merchant ships as early people from the eastern region were seafarers. Ships were loaded with rice, especially “Aush” which is harvested at this time, late – monsoon and source of economic prosperity of the people of this region.
In kojagari pujo, we fill the vessels with rice, five grains, cowrie shells (currency in ancient times), and coins, etc. These are a symbol of good luck.
Alpona
Alpona is another important aspect of all auspicious rituals in Bengali homes. Be it wedding, pujo and other such rituals, Alpona must be drawn on altar, on floors or on chowkis or pidhi. The motifs are mostly floral designs and are drawn to greet/or invoke the goddess. For Lakshmi Pujo, the motifs are usually ears of rice husks (dhan er chhora), lotus (iconographically associated with Lakshmi and symbolic of purity and beauty), feet of Lakshmi, owls and other floral motifs. Traditionally it is drawn with fingers (fingers are used as brushes) and rice paste as paint. Pujo requires bathing and cleansing before drawing the alpona.
Today, this dying art is still practiced by few. For community puja and big celebrations, it is replaced by the acrylic paint. Some may find it convenient to use the acrylic stickers without going through the meditative process of drawing Alpona. And where nowadays everything comes down to hashtags of instant life, for the Insta generation, but for me I still love the traditional approach. You don’t have to be an artist to draw Alpona, just unleash your creativity and follow your own thought process, the spontaneity it brings is truly beautiful, in every essence of it.
Kojagari Lakshmi Puja Bhog parsad
Pujo in the Bengali community is always followed by a sumptuous feast or “bhog” prepared in a sattvic manner (without onions, garlic and other ingredients) and offered to the goddess.
The festive divine platter usually consists of murir moa (puffed rice balls), til er naru (black sesame seed laddoo), narkel naru (coconut jaggery laddoo), murki (candied puffed rice), and bhoger khichuri, labra labdar tarkari (mixed vegetables), tomatoes -Khejur (date) chutney and payesh or payasam. This is the usual fare without which Lakshmi Puja Bhog looks incomplete.
Luchi/poori, cholar dal/chana dal, chanar dalna/paneer curry are other elements that add a festive look.

Basic Rituals of Kojagari Lakshmi Pujo
As I am unable to procure many things needed for a typical Bengali Lakshmi Puja, here are some of the rituals. I only add those that make sense to me and in modified version.
To appease the goddess and seek her blessings in your life, all you need is a pure and pure heart and nothing else.
However, here are some of the rituals –
After drawing the alpona (putting sindoor on the alpona), follow these procedures.
1) Light a dhoop and lamp and the incense will purify the atmosphere around the house. Not only that, you will feel comfortable.
2) Arrange the bhog, specifically black sesame, payasame and coconut ladoo, on the left side of the goddess. These three are considered essential Bhog Prasad for Lakshmi Puja. Arrange the rest of the bhog on the left side only.
3) Aside from Bhog, five types of whole fruits are also offered to the Goddess, these usually include the seasonal varieties such as Apple, Pomegranate, Mausambi and Pomello (Batabi Lebu). Don’t add a banana here.
4) A dozen bananas on a bunch is also needed for the puja.
5) A pile of puffed rice (khoi in Bengali) and dried dates are also offered on a separate plate. Popped rice represents prosperity.
Lakshmi Ghot – Ghot or brass/clay pot filled with water. First you need to mark the ghot with sindoor/cinnabar and draw a swastika. The Bengali swastika sign differs from the commonly perceived image of the swastika. Also called Basudha.
Place this ghot on a pile of rice or grains of rice. Place mango leaves on the ghot (usually five mango leaves from a mango tree that bears fruit). Place shriphal, usually coconut and banana are considered shriphal. In Bengal it is usually green coconut or daab with stems. Many also paint swastikas on green coconuts. Cover the fruit with red cloth or gamcha. You can put flowers or garlands on top. It is believed that Ma Lakshmi stays in the ghot during puja.
Now on a pooja chowki / pidhi lakshmi idol or image covered with a clean and decorative cloth, place there. Decorate with flowers, garlands etc. Place five betel leaves and nuts around it. Each betel leaf accompanied by a betel nut.
Place the Sindor and Chandan/Sandalwood powder in a small container. Apply this as a bindi to the goddess before beginning the puja.
Other things I follow –
Adhibas dala – a cane basket containing sindoor, alta, sugandhi/perfume, shell bangle, iron bangle, red abir, oil, turmeric, swastika pituli, yellow thread, flowers, rice, cowrie shells and coins.
Panchshashyae / or five grains – this mostly contains five ancient grains containing rice akshata (without broken grain), yellow mustard seeds, black sesame seeds, rice grains, wheat / or mashkalai
Panchamrat – Mixture of five foods used during puja prepared with ghee, honey, jaggery (liquid), cottage cheese and milk
Madhuparka – Practice of offering honey to the deity, this is prepared with ghee, honey, cottage cheese and milk.
Lakshmi Puja Mantra – for offerings and offerings to the goddess, place holy basil leaves on whatever is offered to the goddess. Chant this mantra during the puja –
“Namostestu Maha Maye, Shree Padmeye, Sura Poojithe, Shanka, Chakra, Gadha Hasthe, Maha Lakshmi Namostute II”
Pushpanjali Mantra (Bengali version of Panchali) –
“Om namosteh sarv devanam barodasi haripriye I
Ja gotistangm proponanam sa meh bhurvartah darchnaat II”
Pranam Mantra (Bengali version of panchali) –

Arti with Panchapradip – This aarti ritual literally purifies the atmospheric air. It symbolizes our devotion and oneness with the Goddess. It also symbolizes the removal of darkness through true spiritual enlightenment.
At the end of Aarti, burn a camphor or Karpur and offer it to the deity. Camphor burns itself, leaving no residue and emitting sweet scents into the air. It symbolizes the act of surrender to divine power. And like camphor, clear your mind of arrogance, ego and other negativity that surrounds you and spread goodness around you and light of knowledge into the lives of others that touches their lives.
The intoxicating scent of dhoop and incense, the melodious chanting of mantras, pushpanjali, the divine sound of conch shells, the twinkle of lamps, the scent of camphor, luminous flowers, holy basil and the festive platter ushered a spiritual moment into our daily worldly life and filled us with hope, peace, love and positivity.
