Elongated bidet seats and round versions share the same rear end where all internal components are stored. The only difference is the length of the actual seat and lid parts. This means that bidet seats of both sizes can be mounted on toilets of both sizes. So what’s the problem with trying to fit an oblong bidet seat on a round toilet?

The main problem with installing an elongated bidet seat on a round toilet is the overhang. Any elongated bidet seat on a round toilet will overhang or overlap by 1.5″ – 2.5″ on the rim of a round toilet. This assumes the bidet seat is already fitted to the very back of the tank.

First, the overhang is aesthetically objectionable, creating an unattractive-looking toilet facility. The bigger problem is that this facility means the front lip of your toilet bowl is visible when you look into the bidet seat. If the round toilet bowl is particularly short, as in older toilets, there will be a small gap between the rim of the bowl and the opening of the elongated bidet seat, as shown. It can cause discomfort when sitting (particularly in men) and there is a chance that it will “squirt out” during a cleaning wash. Finally, that 1.5 to 2.5 inch overhang can add extra stress to the front portion of the bidet’s seat if the user places too much weight on it.

Should you put an oblong bidet on a round toilet?

In short, we do not recommend it due to the problems described above. Are there situations where it’s okay? If the user currently has a round toilet and will change the bidet seat to an oblong toilet in the near future, this can serve as a temporary solution as long as the user is aware of and pays attention to the issues described. An oblong bidet seat can still be fitted to a round toilet and works well, but the aesthetics and comfort of the seat are severely compromised.

The two solutions are to either swap out the toilet for a different size toilet or convert the bidet seat to the different size. Many bidet seats are available in both round and oblong sizes. In this case it is possible to convert it to a different size by swapping the seat and lid parts.

What to do? Grab a tape measure and a way to record what you find and get going.

Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the center of the mounting holes on the back of the toilet. The standard measurement for this distance is 5½ inches with a center point of approximately 2¾ inches. Center the hook of your tape measure and measure to the outside edge of the front rim of the toilet bowl.
