Layered stamps for card making

Layered Stamps are translucent stamps used to create a dimensional image without adding bulk to your card.

The sets contain 2 or more images that are stamped on top of each other to create a beautiful layered look. This technique is most effective for flowers and foliage.

Practice your inked layers on scrap paper as sometimes it takes a few tries to line up the stamps.

The key is to find the matching dots on each stamp.

Abstract Impressions – Stampin Up!

The Abstract Impressions Stamp Set from Stampin Up! is a good place to start practicing your layering techniques.

The loose layered style makes it impossible to go wrong!

The set has a large 3-layer flower. a small 2-layer flower, a 2-layer cluster of flower heads and two 2-layer leaves.

Only one ink color was used to create the large pink flowers in the stamping technique.

How to make sure all the colors match!

Before stamping the next flower, turn the paper over to make sure the stamp is in a different position. This way each flower looks slightly different.

In this gate fold card, two different shades of purple were used to create the flower heads.

Altew peony bouquet

The Altenew Peony Bouquet stamp set makes a beautiful impression.

It has two 4-layered flowers and two 3-layered leaves along with 2-layered berries and a 2-layered branch of small leaves.

Absolutely stunning!!

The set is so versatile that you can use all four layers for a detailed peony, or opt for just two layers or the outline image.

Choosing your colors is easy with Altenew’s coordinating dice sets. They are sold in groups of four ink cubes ranging from the lightest to the darkest inks of the same color family.

Altenew creates a guide that shows exactly how to match the stamps.

Once you’ve found these dots, it’s helpful to mark them with a small dot on the back of the stamp using a felt-tip pen.

The guides can be downloaded from the Altenew website.

For this card I only used two of the four layers for the flowers as I wanted to create a softer, vintage look.

I stamped the peonies and leaves separately on cardboard and punched them out with the matching punch set.

This gave me a chance to play around with the layout a bit since I didn’t stamp directly on the card face.

The background was designed with a wood-look embossing folder and completed with raindrops from Lucy’s Cards.

The last card uses all four layers of the peony and all three layers of the large leaf stamp from the Peony Bouquet stamp set.

I first stamped the outline stamp with black ink, but then switched to gray ink because it blended better with the colors.

For the background I used the Watercolor Dots stamp set from Altenew.

A final word on layered stamps…

Create your own color combinations for your favorite layering stamps. Stamp them out with a note of the colors used and keep them with the stamps.

Do you have to use special nail polish for stamping?

You will need a special base coat and top coat to use with gel polish. But as long as it’s thick enough, you’ll be good to go. Gel nail polish also dries quickly, which makes it one of the best nail polishes for stamping.

LAYER-ABLE NAIL STAMPS

Nail stamping is a fun and popular way to create unique nail designs. There are many different types of stamps, as well as a variety of different nail polishes that can be used for stamping. But can you use any nail polish for stamping?

While some people might say that any nail polish can be used for nail stamping, others might say that only certain types of polish work best.

The truth is nail polish comes in a variety of formulas, and some of those formulas lend themselves better to stamping than others. If you are planning to use a specific nail polish for your next stamping project, it is important to read this article to the end.

What this article covers:

Can you use any nail polish for stamping?

There are different types of nail polish formulas on the market and each of these formulas has different properties. Some polishes are more permanent while others are more pigmented. When it comes to stamping, you want to use a varnish that is highly pigmented and has a good consistency.

Let’s look at the different types of nail polish formulas and see which ones are best for stamping.

Normal nail polish

If you’re looking for a luscious glossy finish, regular nail polishes are the best. They provide a nice shine but may not be as long-lasting as other formulas.

So can you use regular nail polish for stamping? Well, this type of polish contains less pigment than other formulas, so it might not lend itself as well to stamping. If you choose this type, you can always thicken your nail polish for stamping.

gel nail polish

This is the type of nail polish most commonly used for stamping. It has a thicker consistency than regular nail polish, making it easier to transfer the design from the plate to the nail.

For use with gel polish you need a special base and top coat. But as long as it’s thick enough, you’re good to go.

Gel nail polish also dries quickly, making it one of the best nail polishes for stamping. You don’t have to wait for your nails to dry before moving on to the next step.

Breathable nail polish

Breathable nail polish is a type of nail polish that allows moisture and oxygen to pass through the polish to the nail bed. This type of varnish is ideal for people with weak or easily brittle nails.

This water permeable nail polish allows your nails to breathe and also helps prevent nail yellowing.

When stamping, breathable nail polish is a good option as it doesn’t require a base coat. This means your nails will stain less and the polish will last longer.

Additionally, the pigmentation in breathable polishes is often intense, meaning your stamped designs will appear brighter and more vibrant.

acrylic paint

We have all at some point used acrylic paint for an art project. But what about nail art? Is acrylic paint even safe to use?

The answer is yes. Acrylic paint is non-toxic, so it’s safe to use on your nails.

When it comes to stamping, acrylic paint has some advantages over other nail polishes. First, it dries quickly so you don’t have to wait long for your design to set. Second, it’s very opaque, giving you rich, vibrant color in just one coat. Finally, acrylic paint is very easy to work with and does not require any special techniques or tools.

If you’re looking for a versatile and easy-to-use stamping nail polish, acrylic paint is a great option.

What type of nail polish should I use for stamping?

While you can use any type of nail polish for stamping, not all polishes are created equal. Some polishes are better for stamping than others. You need to consider the consistency, drying time and pigmentation of the nail polish before deciding on one.

Gel and breathable nail polishes are great for stamping because they have a thicker consistency and dry quickly. Additionally, the pigmentation in breathable polishes is often intense, meaning your stamped designs will appear brighter and more vibrant.

Why is my nail stamper not picking up?

Not applying enough stamping polish will dry it out too quickly and it won’t pick up. * Hold your scraper at a 45 degree angle when scraping off the stamping polish. Holding it straight up perpendicular to the plate, will cause you to scrape too much off.

We will go through the most common challenges faced by Clear Jelly Stamper users. Please let me introduce myself. My name is Carrie Johnson and I am a Senior CjS Instructor and now a Wholesale Representative for CjS. My main goal is to make sure that every person out there using CjS is happily stamping without frustration. I recently had the opportunity to demonstrate our product at an open house at one of our distributors in Edmonton, AB this past weekend. As people sat down at my desk, I asked each of them the same question… “Is there anything you’re having trouble with?” Each and every one of them had at least one. These were the most common problems:* Make sure your stamping plate is completely clean and dry before applying stamping polish.* Apply your stamping polish in one direction and scrape in the opposite direction from the stamping plate off. This will ensure you have stamp polish in every part of the image.* Pressure and angle are very important when stamping. You’ll be much more successful at capturing images if you use a feathery, rolling motion across your image. If you apply too much pressure or press straight down, you probably won’t pick it up cleanly. Your Clear Jelly Stamper is delicate, so too much pressure when picking up or pressing on the nail can tear the jelly. Be gentle with the jelly* Make sure you stamp on a hard surface. When stamping on a manicure pad or sponge, you can’t keep the plate flat.* Hold your stamp plate down with one hand while scratching with the other. The large plates don’t sit completely flat. So if you don’t press down while scraping off the polish, the center of your image will likely be missing.* Be sure to apply an adequate amount of stamping polish. If you don’t apply enough stamping varnish, it will dry out too quickly and won’t pick up.* Hold your scraper at a 45-degree angle as you scrape off the stamping varnish. If you hold it perpendicular to the platter you will scrape too much.* Make sure your platter is clean and dry. If you don’t have a spotlessly clean plate, there may already be dried stamping varnish in the image. The new stamping varnish isn’t going in there.* Scratch in the opposite direction as you apply the stamping varnish to make sure there’s polish in every crevice.* You don’t have to be super fast, but you don’t want to wait either too long or the stamping varnish will dry out and become impossible to pick up.* Have everything ready to hand so you don’t waste time searching. The Clear Jelly Stamper leaves a small residue on the nail, allowing the gel to peel off and leave pockets. To avoid this, take a dry cloth and scrub the nail after stamping it. The picture is dry so it won’t go anywhere. This will remove the residue and BAM! ..Success! I recently learned this trick from the amazing @chrissiepearcenails and it has changed my world.* If you use nail polish, use our Smear Not Top Coat. It’s designed to work well with our Stamping Varnish * When you’re using gel, it’s all about printing. Do not spread the gel on. Perform a more floating action to cover the image.* Depending on the intensity of the streaks, the Clear Jelly Stamper will not pick up the streaks. If the streaks are drastic, you probably need to condition your scraper before using it. The scrapers are machine cut. So unless you file or polish the edges, there will be small, tiny, jagged bits that will affect your scraping. The Clear Jelly Stamper family is always here to help, whether it’s me, Debbie, the amazing folks at HQ, or all of our current wonderful users. Ask us anything!! I hope these tips have helped you and brought you a lot of stamping success. Have fun stamping my friends!!!

Stamping vs. Regular Polish, What’s the Difference?

Of course! That’s what being creative is all about, finding your way to express yourself! No matter what type of polish you use, the stamping technique is exactly the same. So experiment. You can also use regular polish to try reverse stamping (Google it). **Another fun fact: If you’re using regular polish, I’ve also told our customers to use old polish. Older polishes tend to thicken over time.
