Lexus ES: Test Mode Procedure
PROCEDURE IN REVIEW MODE
A NOTICE:
Compared to the normal mode, the test mode is more sensitive to disturbances. Therefore, the test mode can detect malfunctions that cannot be detected in the normal mode.
NOTE:
All stored DTCs and freeze frame data will be erased when: 1) the ECM is switched from normal mode to test mode or vice versa; or 2) the engine switch is turned from on (IG) to ACC or off in test mode. Always check and record all DTCs and freeze frame data before changing modes.
PROCEDURE IN REVIEW MODE
(a) Check and ensure the following conditions:
(1) The battery voltage is 11V or more.
(2) Throttle is fully closed.
(3) Shift lever is in P or N.
(4) A/C switch is off.
(b) Turn off the engine switch.
(c) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(d) Turn on the engine switch (IG).
(e) Turn on the Techstream.
(f) Access the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / Check Mode.
Tester display test mode
Powertrain > Engine > Utility
(g) Switch the ECM from normal mode to test mode.
(h) Check if the MIL flashes as shown in the figure.
(i) Start the engine.
(j) Check if the MIL turns off.
(k) Simulate the conditions of the malfunction described by the customer.
(l) Check DTCs and freeze frame data with Techstream.

The screen will restart and the checks will repeat again like a loop. Very annoying as now I can’t access the air conditioner or the audio player
My 2006 GS430 has a problem that all the system diagnostic checks (Sport, Power Steering, DIAG TIRE, DIAG VSC, ECT SNOW, Airbags) show up on the dial along with this system check mode on the screen. Although eventually all the lights go away and the system check mode shows everything is fine. The diagnostic reappears a minute later. I can’t figure out what triggers this check as it doesn’t come up regularly.
