To measure distance I used the very “scientific” method of placing a 25 foot tape measure on the ground when the wind was very light. After priming the pump by pumping the handle 7 times (I stopped at 7 because more and the plunger handle wouldn’t go all the way back into the pump assembly and the manual says not to over pressurize the pump!). Then I just stood up and held the wand like I would when using the sprayer and pulled the trigger.

I just used water and let the sprayer spray for a long time. I was then able to observe where on the tape measure the droplets appeared most frequently. This indicated how far the sprayer could reach and still provide effective coverage.

In my test, I used the “standard” spray nozzle that comes with the sprayer. I also tested the sprayer with a larger nozzle size (more GPM). The most popular chemical used by roof cleaners today is still “bleach” or sodium hypochlorite. It’s also the chemical of choice for ARMA, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association.¹ But to say that today’s roof shingles are primarily asphalt is no longer accurate.

Over the past 30 years, manufacturers have added increasing amounts of additional ingredients to shingles to produce a laminated product made from specialty papers, fiberglass and organic materials such as limestone, leaving only a small amount of asphalt in today’s single.

Limescale is one of the main reasons Gloeocapsa magma, or roof algae, has become a more noticeable problem for homeowners and a boon for roof washers. These black streaks are unsightly and if left untreated will literally eat the singles apart as the algae consume the limestone as it grows. The visible dark coloring is the algae’s protective UV cover as it spreads.

Everyone knows that high pressure washing is not preferred for shingle washing because high pressure can damage shingles by removing the granular surface and can void a homeowner’s roof manufacturer’s warranty. Therefore, the industry today uses other washing systems, which can come in different forms.

sodium hydroxide

Some contractors still use sodium hydroxide, one of the first chemicals found in roof cleaners. Sodium hydroxide is a strongly alkaline product, sometimes referred to as lye or caustic soda. When used in high concentrations and left to stand on any type of asphalt, it can loosen or dissolve the bond between the shingle and granular material as sodium hydroxide degrades petroleum-based products such as asphalt. However, fewer and fewer of today’s shingles are made with a lot of asphalt.

And that’s not to say that sodium hydroxide products can’t be used to clean many types of roofing materials. While sodium hydroxide will clean dirt, mold, and algae, cleaning solutions must be used at reasonable dilution rates, for limited periods of time, and must be flushed thoroughly at high flow rates—but not high pressure rates—to remove the chemical and stop any residual action.

Now back to sodium hypochlorite. This system is not without problems and new naysayers to its use are happy to bring them up. Yes, sodium hypochlorite simply turns into salt once the water has evaporated. Flooding or covering plants without proper dilution can cause damage to plant roots and foliage. Not if handled correctly.

Sodium hypochlorite, when used in high concentrations and left on asphalt shingles, can damage them just as bleach does to clothing fibers with repeated laundering. But when used at the right dilution, treating plants by pre-rinsing and post-rinsing, and fully flushing the solution from the roof at the time of cleaning, these problems are just scaremongering against contractors using sodium hypochlorite. Also, I must note that there is a small amount of sodium hydroxide in the 12% Sodium Hypochlorite sold today as a mix stabilizer.

Sodium percarbonate

Today you often hear the words “soft wash”. And this phrase can mean more than one thing. For some, a gentle wash is just the fact that they’re simply using more gpm (gallons per minute) of water to flush cleaning solutions off the roof, rather than using high psi (pounds per square inch) water pressure to flush the chemicals out – or, as others call it, low-pressure wash. So even sodium hydroxide or sodium hypochlorite contractors can say they are soft or low pressure washers.

Others say that a gentle wash is actually not a water rinse at all. Instead, just spray it on and then let nature take its course, letting humidity and rain do the rinsing. With many of these products, it is sodium percarbonate that gets the job done.

This oxygen-based system only begins to work when first mixed with water and applied to the roof surface. Since the carbonic effect stops quickly as soon as the chemical reaction with water is complete, further or later rinsing the product off the roof does not matter. It is also the product of choice for cleaning wood-shed roofs and here the process has been extended to asphalt shingle roofs.

This relatively new player in the game is gaining ground as contractors push a “green,” eco-friendly business focus. But sodium percarbonate is also mined from the soil as trona and cleaned by chemical treatments. Like oil, it is a finite resource that generates waste residues that can be harmful to the environment.

I’m not saying that switching to a supposedly greener cleaning product isn’t good for everyone. Rather, all three of these chemical cleaning methods have their place and work. Those attempting to badmouth another contractor’s methods should be wary or find that in just a few years their own perfect method has become the wrong way.

When full, the Field King was quite heavy – about 45 pounds – and we didn’t want to try to pick it up and put it on our backs. By putting it on the tailgate, we could easily slip our arms into the strap. The harness comes with padded chest straps and a padded back strap, but we would have liked a little more padding on the back strap as the bottom of the tank still presses uncomfortably against our lower backs. Some initial assembly is required and the 18 volt lithium ion battery must be charged before using the sprayer. A minor downside is the need to remove the battery from the back of the sprayer each time it needs to be charged – we would have preferred a built-in battery and cord that plugs directly into the unit. Still, the battery performance is a big plus. On a full charge we were able to use the sprayer continuously for almost 2 hours before it started losing its charge. The manufacturer claims that the battery charge lasts around 3.5 hours, which could be accurate in a typical spraying situation where the user isn’t constantly spraying. We really wanted to like the Chapin International 1002 pump sprayer. Unfortunately, it failed early in our hands-on tests. We filled the small sprayer with water and pumped it to increase the pressure in the tank.

When we pressed the thumb trigger, water spurted out from where the nozzle connected to the stem. At first we thought we didn’t connect the nozzle well enough, but the water kept spraying out the sides even after it was tightened. We removed the nozzle and found that the stem itself was broken. No matter how we adjusted the nozzle tip, the water sprayed in all directions.

Something obviously happened to damage the stem. We had to leave the sprayer out of our testing at this point, but based on our research, we have a feeling the broken stem was likely accidental. Chapin International is a renowned manufacturer and we would not hesitate to test this model again.
