Then you leave out a lot of other information. Sitting in the driveway with the fans off and the car warmed up would mean the thermostat was open and coolant was circulating. If it just did a closed-open-closed cycle, it wouldn’t have drained the cold coolant from the radiator, so you’d be mixing cold and hot coolant. Otherwise you weren’t just idling and you were driving, forcing air through the radiator and cooling the coolant within. So when you later plug in the thermometer, it would undoubtedly still be cooler than the engine. Because if you were idle long enough without a fan, the gauge would show more than 225 and the cooler would also show more than 175.

That’s just my opinion on it.

I got the information from the “Herd” Lt1 Impala website. Scott Muller described the LT1 cooling system very well. Here’s a quote from him with the part numbers.

“A more elegant way to address this issue would be to simply replace the existing PCM transmitter with a new dual-purpose transmitter that GM recently offered for other applications. This is a new GM 3-wire transmitter unit that includes both the PCM and Generator in one unit that installs in the existing location of the PCM sensor.

GM has started using a 3-wire dual-purpose transmitter on some new engines. It combines both the PCM and the encoders in one unit. This is ideal as there are no additional holes to drill or tap. This new dual-purpose transmitter can replace the existing PCM transmitter.

Here is the information on the 3-pin coolant temperature sensor.

This connector pigtail is a complete connector with the terminals installed and wires that would need to be spliced ​​to the existing wires. The new transmitter unit is wired as follows:

Pin A = Black, PCM sensor ground

Pin B = Yellow, coolant signal to PCM

Pin C = Dark Green, to meter

In summary, the temperature difference between the Impala gauge and the PCM transmitters is due to the position of the gauge transmitter and not the meter or transmitter itself. I would consider this a design anomaly (nice word for mistake or error) which fortunately can be easily corrected and which of course doesn’t affect vehicle operation, just the reading. ”

The terminology is temp sender vs temp sensor, and I can’t remember which is on the pump or block. They’re different.

It is a single wire temperature sensor. It ONLY drives the analog gauge on the dash and is not required for engine operation. IIRC I got mine from NAPA but that was a few years ago.
