Deciding how big your doormat should be can be a difficult task. Whether you want the mat to take up all of the door space or be a little smaller is up to you, but we’ve done our own research on this.

Typically, a doormat should cover at least 80% of the width of your door. Considering that the average front door is about three feet wide, that means your doormat should be at least 30 inches in diameter.

Let’s cover all things related to doormat sizes and what you may or may not consider when decorating your entryway. We are here to help!

What is the average doormat?

A doormat typically measures 18 inches by 30 inches. Of course, these dimensions work best for a standard-sized single door, while a 22″ x 36″ mat is better suited for larger entryways.

As previously mentioned, you should ensure that the doormat you choose covers around 80% of the width of your door.

How do you choose a doormat size?

Most of the time you want to choose a doormat that suits your door and entrance. A sufficiently large mat is essential, especially for anyone working with double doors.

Even with smaller front doors, choosing a doormat that is almost as wide as the door or wider will help create a cohesive look for your home. Again, as long as the width of your mat is 80% of the width of the door, it should look fine, so no need to worry.

Considering that the average single door is three feet wide, double doors should be around six feet wide. That means your doormat needs to be at least 5 feet wide to look appropriate.

That being said, a 1.5m wide doormat looks best on double doors and gives two people enough room to wipe their feet.

As long as you follow our recommendation above, you shouldn’t need to purchase two separate mats for your double doors.

Again, that’s not to say you can’t try this if you want, but for cost reasons, choosing a mat that’s 5ft wide is cheaper than buying several smaller ones.

Wrap everything up

Whether you have multiple doormats or have never thought about buying one, getting the right size is key. A doormat should be 80% the width of the door or even larger, so try to find one that fits your entire entryway.

It’s also important to choose a doormat that won’t fall apart after a few months, so we recommend something synthetic and water/UV resistant.

You can also try installing a second mat in your front door to pick up dirt and debris that your outside doormat didn’t catch. In addition, you can put a rug underneath to add some charm to your entrance.

Still, try to choose a large enough doormat for your front door, and don’t be afraid to get a pair for the other entrances in your home.

Good old rubber mats

Maybe not the prettiest of mats, but rubber is one of mankind’s greatest inventions – it’s tough, durable, waterproof and flexible.

The disadvantages? Rubber gets very hot in summer and can crack from cold air in winter. Plus, rubber floor mats look best in industrial settings, so they tend to detract from, rather than complement, a warm, welcoming entrance.

Coconut floor mats

The advantage of coir doormats lies in the variety of cute and fun doormats that are available in this style, adding a lot of versatility to your door decoration.

Unfortunately, coconut crumbles easily and falls off. As cute as they are at first, they don’t stand up to bad weather and show wear and tear quickly. You need to replace coir floor mats often because rain, snow, sand, and sun can hasten their breakdown. We only recommend coconut floor mats for indoor use.

Cloth or carpet floor mats

There are many options for cloth or carpet doormats, but if you’re planning on placing them outside, make sure they’re made of synthetic fibers.

Natural fiber doormats are best for indoor use, so avoid placing a doormat outdoors if it’s cotton, wool, or a cotton blend.

Look for cloth or carpet floor mats that are made specifically for outdoor use and dry quickly.

Synthetic rope floor mats

Luckily, it’s entirely possible to cut essentially all coir mats to size. Coir mats possess a large number of inherent properties that make them superior to other types of doormats, and this modifiable characteristic makes a coir doormat the perfect option for almost any location or entrance!

How do you know when to cut a coir mat? Easy! Determine how wide your doorway is and then compare that to the size of coir doormat you intend to use. Suppose you have a door that is 36 inches wide but your coir mat is 48 inches long. This coconut mat is clearly too big. Good thing fitting these floor mats is a breeze!

The process of installing a coir mat in any doorway is simple and intuitive; almost anyone can do it! First measure both your doorway and your doormat. Then determine how much you need to remove (in our example above we need to cut off about 12 inches). Mark the measurements with the marker pen on the back of the coconut mat. Using a Stanley knife or sharp knife, carefully cut the mat to the size of your mat well. Even if you don’t have shoes in your house, there will be times when you need to rush in with your shoes for one last thing, or times when a handyman or repairman inside the house needs to wear work boots. For these situations – and for shoe houses – doormats are essential.

“With a good brushing and tamping, doormats can keep dirt, wet snow, and dripping rainwater from getting into your home,” says Lindsey Handel, buyer at Pennsylvania garden and home store Terrain.

Floor mats can also help with a comprehensive allergy control plan, says Stephen Kimura, a board-certified allergist in Pensacola, Fla. “If you wear your shoes around the house, at least wiping them off will help some. We now have pollen season all year round, so these measures are important.”

Kimura’s family doesn’t wear shoes indoors, but she has cheap, washable, rubber-backed cotton mats on each door to catch dirt and put on shoes. The right doormat for your home depends on whether it is fully exposed or under a covered porch.

Handel recommends coconut fibers for exposure; For a covert exposure, she says you can opt for a less durable jute-coir blend. The best thickness depends on whether the mat is inside or outside.

Though Cho, who has two children, doesn’t keep shoes at home, she considers doormats a “decorative and fun way to greet guests” and to help catch dirt, water and snow before putting shoes in the door. If you have a main entry, Cho says you should “go with one you really love, who makes a statement, or has a funny greeting.” For all secondary entries, she suggests coordinating the look of these mats: “They could all be exactly the same for consistency, or they could just have a similar vibe.” For interior entrances, she recently designed some washable entrance rugs for Lorena Canals. For exterior doors, she prefers vinyl Chilewich mats, which are mildew, mildew and chlorine resistant, with a water-blocking, non-slip vinyl backing. Terrain’s Handel says that in most climates, the coir fiber, which is made from the husk of a coconut, works best for outdoor floor mats that are exposed to the weather. “The thicker and more scratchy doormat you can find, the better,” she says, to scrape off dirt. She prefers a woven doormat with a knot pattern for its classic look. These can be found just about anywhere, including Home Depot, which has the Entryways Knot-Ical handwoven coir doormat ($38.57, homedepot.com).

In the Midwest and Northeast, floor mats must be winterized. Chicago-based Everygirl Media Group co-founders Alaina Kaczmarski and Danielle Moss both use coir mats to dust the snow. “The bristles absorb moisture and even catch the snow when you brush your feet,” says Kaczmarski. Coir doesn’t always last more than a season, but she says it’s worth buying because coir is best for clearing snow. Both Kaczmarski and Moss like coir mats from Williams-Sonoma, like the French Stripe Doormat ($59.95, williams-sonoma.com).

For a multi-season mat that will stand up to any winter, try a lobster rope mat, says Lisa Myers, owner of Seattle home goods store Capers. “They work to drain the water, and they have a little coarseness in the rope that removes the dirt,” says Myers. She highlights the Rope Co.’s floor mats, handcrafted in Maine by fifth-generation lobsterers ($65-$129, theropeco.com). “They are super durable. I had a similar one for many years and I just hosed it down and it still looks great.”

“I’ve used rope mats on several projects, usually beach or summer homes,” says Josh Linder, owner of Evolve Residential in Boston. They’re “a fun first look inside the house, but also incredibly sturdy and wearable,” he says. “Rope made for the oceans . . . meant to take a beating.” He likes Rockport Rope mats, which come in a variety of sizes ($39.99 to $389.99, rockportdoormats.com).

And with that begins a new occasional series detailing my decorating rules. There aren’t many true absolutes in this business, but every designer has a personal code. You might find some of my rules silly too. But I thought it would be fun to pass them on.

Don’t #1: The Wimpy doormat

There’s a conspiracy among the folks who make adorable doormats – they’ve all agreed to save money on materials by offering Barbie-sized copies to the unsuspecting public. When I reach that mythical day of designing my own line of products, I will start a doormat revolution. (Fascinating, isn’t it, the things that go through a madman’s mind?)

Your doormat is the first thing anyone sees when they walk into your home, and almost always the doormats are little sad things out of proportion to the room.

Your doormat must be at least as wide as your front door. If you have glass sidelights on the sides of your door, consider going even bigger – try to find something as wide as the door and sidelights combined.

This doormat is the right size.

This doormat is not.

This is my favorite doormat because it comes in the right sizes for a standard door and double width doors. And you can monogram it, add your last name, or leave it blank.

Don’t #2: The dreaded Stubby Twin Drapery Rods

When I think of the astronomical sticker shock that comes with curtain rods—especially good curtain rods—I understand how the Stubby Twins were born. Believe me. I have to give customers their custom window treatment suggestions along with a paper bag to breathe.

Curtain rods are priced per foot, and if your panels are purely decorative, buying two short rods and hanging them on each side of the window seems like a smart solution.

Please just resist because I promise you that performing the Twin Stub Rod trick is like buying a pair of pants with holes from thigh to knee just to save money on fabric.

Design is about creating sight lines to draw the eye around a space. A broken rod = a broken line, and it draws attention to something you don’t want to emphasize: a virtual poster that says, “Look Mom, I’ve saved too much!” Ok, sorry. That was really mean.

Curtains should close – or at least look like it’s a possibility. The rod must extend across the window. Even if the wall is curved and angled or the size of a Broadway stage. Even if the window is arched. Even if ______________.

Yes. Even then.

Do #1: The double grommet shawl

Since I’m the evil queen of expensive curtain rods, I’m sharing a simple trick to make store-bought curtain panels look better: use two panels on each side of your window. You won’t think you really need it, but you’ll be blown away by the difference it makes. These are double curtains from Pottery Barn.

One of the main differences between store-bought and custom curtains is the richness of the fabric (see the custom glories below), and doubling is a simple little cheat.

This trick looks crispest if you can find a grommet cover, since most store-bought curtains are unpleated and it’s difficult to make clip-on rings or rod pocket panels look professional. (Do not completely decorate #3: Pole Pocket panels.)

Eyelets are metal rings embedded in the fabric.

West Elm, Pottery Barn and even Ikea have decent eyelet panels. (These gray Ikea panels look twice as good as expected.)

Also: Make sure your bar and grommets have the same metal finish.

Do #4: Buy lined curtains

One more thing on the go: if you find curtain fabrics with a lining, choose them every time. They’ll last longer and look a lot more like the professional window treatments we finicky designers prefer – all of which are lined.

A good start, these eyelet plates from Pottery Barn are lined and the white coloring is extra crisp.

In retrospect:

Do not buy floor mats that are too small.

Don’t skimp on the rod department.

Don’t buy rod pocket curtains.

Double up on store-bought curtains for a big impact on a smaller budget.

Look for lined curtains whenever you can.

I recently replaced my porch light with this pendant light from Rejuvenation. I still love the bright red! And I wanted the color to really stand out, so I kept the rest of the decor pretty neutral.

An easy way to add character to your porch for the winter is to add some fresh flowers. These cyclamen flowers in shades of red and pink add a pop of color. HERE you can see my spring veranda from last year.

And I love this gold garden stool I found at my local homegoods. I set the stool up with my belly basket and draped a throw over the edge. And I had a big bouquet of silk tulips that I put in.

These two additions added the perfect amount of texture and early spring highlights.

How to layer your doormat and rug

To add some fun to my front porch, I laid out my black and white striped area rug and my favorite doormat. I love putting a rug under your doormat. It will instantly add some personality and pattern to your porch.

And it’s a great way to add color if you want. Here are some of my favorite combinations!

Although our tester doesn’t live in a sandy area, she commented that this doormat would be perfect for those locations, as the dirt and debris falls between the slats instead of being trapped in fibers. To remove the sand (or other dirt and debris), you can simply lift the mat and quickly sweep or vacuum the area. Overall, the mat is extremely heavy and durable, so it won’t slip and slip when wiping your feet. Just be careful where you place this mat – our tester had no issues with the material soiling the floor, but a small number of shoppers did experience this.

Highly Effective What we don’t like Coir coir is widely recognized as one of the best and most durable doormat materials. As a result, it is widely recommended for cold, wet seasons like winter. Our tester liked this option and got a perfect 5 in durability and effectiveness – two things that are essential for an all-season option. But it also deserves full marks in terms of design. If there’s a downside, it tends to lose a little (but that’s pretty normal with coco mats as a whole). If you can get over that, you should appreciate that this doormat isn’t too thick or too thin – it’s just the right size for standard doors. Very Expensive In person, this hand tufted rug is even more beautiful than it looks. It’s like a true work of art – one that is reluctant to ruin with dirty shoes! Still, a doormat is a doormat, and this indoor/outdoor option gets the job done. While beautiful, it has a non-slip polyester latex backing that will keep it securely in place no matter how hard you rub your shoes on it. The polyester-acrylic blend doormat is expensive. And although it cleans shoes well, dirt and debris are really visible. Non-absorbent The Letterfolk Tile Mat is a real standout, not only because of the attractive black and white colorway (it comes in over two dozen other colors too!), but also because it’s customizable. The doormat comes with additional “tiles” that you can swap out to create your own personal color pattern or even write a word. However, this mat is a little lacking in effectiveness – our tester found that while it did remove dirt from shoes, the glossy texture made it difficult to adequately dry the mud and wet. As it turns out, it’s more common than most of us think.

Your doormat is often the first thing people see when they enter your home. A clean, fresh, and well-styled iteration lets visitors know what awaits them just beyond the threshold, which is why you want to make sure your doormat is always in the best shape possible. That means keeping it clean, but also replacing it when its fibers show signs of wear. According to Mary Patton of Houston-based firm Mary Patton Design, learn how to monitor your for these symptoms of decline.

Replace your mat every six months.

The lifespan of a doormat depends on many factors: the lack (or presence) of an overhang, drastic weather changes (extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on certain materials), and frequency of use all affect overall wear and tear. Additionally, the longer your mat stays at the front of your home, the more foot traffic it will see, which can wear it down and prevent it from doing its primary job: keeping dirt out forever. Ultimately, this is why Patton recommends replacing yours twice a year.

Monitor it for signs of deterioration.

If your doormat is obviously on the way out – it could have frayed corners, worn areas, or stains that won’t be easily removed – you should consider replacing it before the six-month period is up. “Once it starts looking sad and tired, it’s time to update it,” explains Patton. “They’re an inexpensive way to brighten up your home’s entryway.” If you have an option you love or just want to extend the life of the piece you already have, consider swapping it out seasonally. Replacing your standard mat with themed covers or options that coordinate with other front door decorations (think hanging wreaths or potted plants) can keep them looking new for longer.

Dirt never stops. Dirt is inevitable, and it’s constant—not to mention winter’s salt and sand, leaves or grass clippings or other unspeakable filth that comes through the entrances. Dirty entrances can be a problem for commercial businesses. A messy room makes a bad first impression on clients and customers. Not to mention, over time, brought-in dirt will cost you money in carpet wear and tear.

Safety mats and systems help to keep your entrance areas clean, limit the wear and tear of your carpet and contribute to the preventative care of your floor covering.

But where to start when choosing step mat systems? There are a few different options to help you cover your entrances – and your problems.

How Businesses Use Walk-Off Mat Systems

Most businesses know that installing a step mat right in the entryway is a great way to reduce building debris and wear and tear on your flooring. A recent survey we conducted found that 92 percent of respondents use at least one type of step mat, if not both an indoor and outdoor solution.

Footstep mats should be long, and the most common types are placed on top of your flooring to protect the area underneath. This allows people to get the outside dirt and grime off their feet before making their way into the rest of the building.

While it’s common to use step mat systems, it’s important to ensure you’re using the right type of solution to best protect your flooring investment.

Choosing the right running mats for your space

There are three types of mats commonly used in commercial buildings: exterior mats, wiper/scraper mats, and drying mats.

1. Exterior mats

While outdoor mats can help reduce the amount of outside air being brought into the building, these mats are still exposed to the elements and don’t always remove as much dirt as you would think. If you decide to use outer mats, they should still be combined with a strong inner walk-off system.

2. Drying mats

Some buildings only use drying mats at the entrance of their buildings. While drying mats prevent slipping, they only dry wet shoes and don’t pick up as much dirt. Although they are a cheaper option in terms of upfront costs, they are not as effective as other options. They can become saturated, especially if they are not replaced often, allowing more moisture and dirt into the building rather than being trapped at the entrance.

3. Wiper/scraper mats

These are higher quality mats which, if placed outdoors, must be protected from the elements or used exclusively indoors. Wiping/scraping mats are rigid mats and only need to be vacuumed once a day due to their high quality. They collect dirt, absorb moisture and protect your carpet. These types of mats are your best investment. It’s a lot cheaper to buy a higher quality mat that will last seven to 10 years rather than renting mats that are cleaned and replaced every week.

To prevent mat saturation, edge curl, and to promote cleanliness, many buildings choose to rent step mats that are retired by a company. These still need regular vacuuming, but a company picks up the dirty mats and replaces them with new ones. A rental system may be more cost-effective in the short term, but mats are not always of high quality and do not offer benefits such as DPM Care’s deep cleaning, which have been shown to extend the life of the product and protect your entryway in the long term.

An alternative to running mats

You may decide that walk-off mats are the best option for your decor, but if you’re looking for a more permanent, more aesthetically pleasing solution, carpet tile walk-off systems are a great option.

A carpet tile step mat system extends the life of your floor and eliminates the need for unattractive mats on your flooring. Carpet tile systems can be custom cut to fit your space and adhere to the floor to create a semi-permanent entryway solution with no trip hazards.

No matter what style or color you choose, don’t forget the length of your running mat system. We recommend that your treadmill system be at least 32 feet long.

However, most of the rooms weren’t designed to offer that much space. If your building can’t accommodate 32 feet, you’re in good shape as long as you have at least 12 to 15 feet of kick mat.

How to care for your running mats

Maintaining your flooring regularly is the best thing you can do for step mats and carpet tile systems. Follow these tips to best care for your investment:

If you live in a place with snow, proper daily maintenance is especially important. Because of the ice melt, you need to rinse the mats regularly. As the ice melt dries, it solidifies and adheres to the walk-off fiber. If you don’t wean it off monthly, it will build up and you may not get it out.

So you just bought a piece of coconut mat. Maybe you’re replacing an old, tired looking mat that’s been there since you moved in, or maybe it’s a brand new floor area looking for an attractive floor mat to complete it. Either way, there’s a good chance you’ll need to trim your mat to fit. Luckily, cutting coir mats is easy.

To cut your coir mat, follow the simple steps below;

Measure the area where you will attach the mat. Turn your new piece of coir mat upside down. Mark the measurements on the back of the mat

Step 1

Before doing anything else, it’s important to get accurate measurements of where you plan to place your coir mat. Make sure you take multiple measurements as porches and mat wells are often not as square as they look, so take a few measurements along the length of the area just to be sure.

Once you have an accurate set of measurements, turn the mat over so the PVC backing is facing you. Mark your measurements on the mat with a pen or other pen that leaves a visible mark.

Tip: Remember that if you are cutting an unusual shape, you will need to “flip” the measurements if you turn the mat right side out.

To cut the mat, you can either cut along with a metal ruler or mark a cutting line with the ruler. If you don’t have a metal ruler, use something that’s heavy and has a straight edge (we used a shelf in this picture!)

Now, with the line marked, carefully cut along the back of the mat. Although the mat will be at least 17mm thick you only need to cut through the PVC backing so it won’t be too difficult. Once you’ve cut the backing the full length of the mat, gently pull the two pieces apart (you may need to cut the knife a few more times to sever the tangled coir).

Tip: Even if you’re just cutting through the backing, be careful not to work on a surface that can easily be damaged if the knife cuts all the way through.

Place your mat in its new home. Hopefully it will fit perfectly, but if not you can trim the edges as needed.

And that’s it! Your new coconut mat is assembled and ready to use. You can use a few dots of glue on the back if you want, but in most cases this is not necessary.

Tip: As a natural material, coir tends to shed some fibers when new. After attaching the mat, vacuum the surface to remove most of the loose fibers.
