DIY Escape Room Ideas

Escape rooms are fun, exciting and unconventional activities that will leave a lasting impression for a long time. These are basically locked rooms that are essentially filled with puzzles that players must solve in order to exit the room. Don’t worry, you won’t really be stuck in the room forever if you can’t solve it. They are usually limited in time. Part of the fun, however, is beating the room as fast as you can, or better yet, faster than the room’s record itself.

While you can do an escape room all by yourself, the best escape room in Orlando is extra fun when you do it with a group of your friends, family, or even co-workers. Escape rooms are even great as a team building activity and a lot of fun. Given that some escape rooms have a maximum number of people allowed in a team, this serves as a conclusion that the more people in a team, the faster a room can be solved. But what if there are only two of you? Can you effectively do an escape room with just two people?

advantages

Not only can you do an escape room with just two people, there might even be benefits to doing so.

communication

The first benefit of an escape room with just two people is communication. Undoubtedly, it’s easier to communicate with just one other person in the room. That in itself is an incredible advantage, as communication is extremely important in escape rooms. Because although there are numerous puzzles in an escape room, there are times when the puzzles are somehow connected.

Perhaps the answer to one riddle can help solve another. Without clear communication between players, someone will stare cluelessly at a puzzle – a puzzle that can be easily solved by someone communicating the other puzzle needed.

While it’s fun to do escape rooms with groups, communication is very difficult to maintain in all the hustle and bustle. Imagine a group of five to seven people, all doing different tasks and shouting at the same time. They may think they are providing information, but without a proper communication system, no one will be able to understand everyone else. Because of this, it might even be more beneficial to be in pairs than in a group.

Better focus

Another benefit of being just two people or a couple is that you can really focus more on getting the job done, having fun, and having a good time with your partner. One problem with large groups is that sometimes someone gets a little too ambitious or someone gets a little too controlling. These are common problems in escape rooms that seriously detract from the fun of it. However, since only two people do an escape room, there is plenty of room for rest and fun.

More room

Speaking of space, this is another benefit for two people over groups doing escape rooms. Some escape rooms are not very spacious at first. Sit in a large group and you basically overcrowd the place. Doing an escape room while crowded is not only a shame but also makes it even more difficult to solve the escape room.

Having the space is important, especially for some people who need the space to focus and reflect. Two people doing an escape room have more than enough space for the team to work in and around the room.

Disadvantages

Of course, more people have some advantages over a team of two. For example, a bigger team would obviously mean more pairs of eyes. This can mean a lot. For one thing, more eyes means a larger group can see more things quickly. When entering a room, a larger group will usually break up and solve more puzzles at once than a team of two. However, this is not necessarily always an advantage. A systematic couple going through the puzzles in an organized manner will easily beat a larger group haphazardly venturing into an escape room.

Another disadvantage of having fewer pairs of eyes means that if a puzzle is particularly difficult, the team of two may have less chance of solving it quickly. A tip for escape rooms is that if a puzzle gets difficult and costs too much, the person doing it should have someone else try it. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh new pair of eyes with a different perspective to easily solve a puzzle.

Conclusion

Overall, taking on an escape room challenge as a duo is perfectly fine. There are many couples or two-person teams who successfully pull together to enjoy the thrill of an escape room.

Can you take your phone into a escape room?

Don’t use your phones. Not all escape rooms allow cell phones to be brought into the room with you, but in the case that they do, leave it in your pocket/purse/bag.

DIY Escape Room Ideas

When playing an escape room game, there is a general etiquette that you should follow. This ensures that everyone in your group can work together easily and exit the room successfully.

#1. If it has a “do not touch” sticker, don’t touch it.

I promise your gamemaster isn’t trying to trick you. There’s a “Don’t Touch” sticker on it for a reason, which isn’t part of your gameplay. They are commonly attached to cameras, light switches, outlets, music players, and speakers. You can also find it on some locks or props that shouldn’t be touched.

If you don’t touch things with these stickers, you can focus on solving things that are part of your game.

Usually you will see a sticker that looks like this:

#2. Don’t be destructive

Seriously, don’t destroy anything. If the GM tells you not to look up at the ceiling or under the floor, they mean business. It will just be a waste of time!

If you look into the ceiling and break a ceiling tile, not only is that very disrespectful to the business (because now they have to pay for replacements), but you’ll likely get kicked out with no refund!

Also, do not use excessive force. If a key won’t open a lock, it probably means you don’t have the right key. Do not try to force the key and break it in the lock. This interrupts your game and can prevent your team from finishing. Most of the time, your game master won’t stop your time to fix a problem you caused (by not following the rules).

You don’t have to loosen every screw you find, and unless they provide you with a screwdriver, you probably won’t need to loosen any of them.

#3. Do not climb / knock over the furniture

This goes hand in hand with the rule of not being destructive. Flipping furniture won’t help you, it just wastes your time! Also, there’s nothing you have to reach by climbing the furniture. We promise you’ll be able to reach anything you need with your feet on the ground (unless you’re super small, then all you need is a tall friend to help you).

#4. Don’t gamble while under the influence

Whether you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol, your brain isn’t working at full capacity. This means your mind isn’t as sharp as it needs to be to solve the puzzles and escape the room. Arrive sober and party afterwards! Many escape rooms won’t let you play anyway if you’re visibly drunk and will turn you away with no refund.

#5. Don’t use your phones

Not all escape rooms allow cell phones to be brought into the room, but if you do, leave it in your pocket/purse/bag. If you need to use your phone for an emergency, most locations will prompt you to leave the room and pick up the call/response to the text in the hallway or lobby so you don’t disrupt the game.

All the information you need to escape is provided in the room. Google will not be helpful!

DO NOT take photos or videos! Seriously, don’t. Images or videos containing puzzles or parts of the game will not only ruin the game for those who haven’t played it but may also get you kicked out with no refund. Don’t destroy it for yourself. And definitely don’t put the video on Youtube (unless the gamemaster made you delete it).

#6. Don’t put things in your pockets

Putting things in your pocket is a bad idea in more ways than one:

You might forget you put that key in your back pocket and now your team can’t find the key to open the lock! It’s a waste of time and no fun.

Put things in your pockets and take them home…big no no. This causes problems with the game and can prevent future teams from successfully escaping the room (because you took the clue home with you!). Yes we have backups but we only have a limited number. Due to the need to manufacture/buy multiple replacement products, we are no longer able to offer new games!

At Live Action Escapes, our Game Masters give you rules to follow before playing your Escape Room game. This is not only to our advantage, but also to your advantage. Following the rules will likely help you save time playing the game (which could help you escape!), but it also prevents the game masters from having to interrupt your game to prevent you from doing something you shouldn’t do (like climbing on the furniture to look at the ceiling). Breaking too many rules can also get you kicked out with no refund. You don’t want that and neither do we.

Where do you hide clues?

Indoor hiding places
  • Kitchen: fridge, sink, dishwasher, coffee machine, fruit basket, vacuum cleaner, drawers, cupboards, counter, underside of a chair, table.
  • Entrance: doormat, key cupboard, telephone, coat rack.

DIY Escape Room Ideas

Set the limits

If you don’t set boundaries, children may think they can do anything. They are so excited, in fact, that finding the treasure will be the only thing that matters to them.

In order not to constantly have to intervene during the hunt and suddenly deny access to a place, we recommend that you clearly define from the beginning which rooms are allowed and which are forbidden. Of course, it’s even better if you can physically block access to the forbidden places (by locking the door or putting an insurmountable obstacle in front of it…).

Which one will boil first?

So the water boils first and the oil last.

DIY Escape Room Ideas

A:

Kevin –

One question after another. Your first question is actually the hardest. This is because the boiling point of oil is difficult to measure. This is because oil begins to smoke long before it reaches its boiling point. This is called the “smoke point”. The smoke points for some common cooking oils are here:

Safflower – 510 F (266 C)

Soybeans – 495 F (257 C)

Corn – 475 F (246 C)

Peanut – 440 F (227 C)

Sesame – 420 F (216 C)

Olive – 375F (191C)

(from http://wywahoos.org/wahoos/cookbook/tools.htm)

The exact temperatures also depend on how pure the oil is.

The boiling point estimates I’ve found are pretty sketchy, but a fair estimate for soybean oil (the cheapest cooking oil is soybean oil) is around 300C (or 572F).

You can compare this to the boiling point of water, which is 100°C (or 212°F). The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the liquid turns into a gas. The reason different liquids boil at different temperatures is because of the chemical bonds that hold them together. So when I say oil has a higher boiling point than water, what I really mean is that the chemical bonds that hold oil together are stronger than those that hold water together—it takes more heat to break them apart. The main reason for this is that the oil molecules are much larger, so each has more surface area to stick to the others.

What does that mean in real life? Let’s say you took a pan of oil and a pan of water and put both on the stove. Then turn on the stove to heat both at the same speed. Once they reach 100 degrees Celsius, the water begins to boil. And at around 257 degrees C, the oil starts to smoke. But you have to get to 300 degrees C before the oil boils. The water boils first and the oil last.

Every minute counts in an escape room and nothing is worse than being stuck in traffic or losing track of time and being late for your experience. Often this means losing time in space, and that’s a HUGE disappointment. At Breakout we always let you reschedule, but sometimes you may not have that option. We therefore recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to the scheduled game time to give yourself plenty of time to check in, fill out waivers, use the restroom and get ready for your adventure!

3. BE POSITIVE

Escape rooms are meant to be challenging. If it were super easy, it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting. If you stay positive and see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles, you will be much more likely to come away with them successfully.

4. UNDERSTAND THE ROOM RULES

In most escape rooms, you will be given a set of rules at the start of the experience. It’s easy to ignore these when you’re excited and just want to get in the game, but often these rules are for your safety, and knowing them can actually make you successful in a room! Rules may seem boring, but sometimes paying attention during those short minutes of instructions can help!

5. KEEP AN EYE ON THE CLOCK

An hour goes by very quickly in an escape room and before you know it you’re down to minutes! Keeping track of your remaining time will help you plan your next steps and know when to ask for a hint. Escape rooms are meticulously planned and designed so you can solve and open everything within an hour, so keep in mind what you have left or what you have already opened. The best rule of thumb is if you haven’t found anything new in 5 minutes or opened something new, you may need to go ahead and ask for help.

6. KEEP A CONSISTENT, DETERMINED APPROACH

Most escape rooms are designed in a logical, sequential order. One clue leads to the next, leads to the next. So it is best to follow this path of clues. Don’t get too distracted by other elements in the room. Concentrate on the note you are working with.

7. SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING

Communication is absolutely crucial to solving an escape room. That’s why escape rooms are 100% team activities! Most rooms are designed so that everyone can work on something or discover something new at the same time. So if you don’t communicate, you may not find some missing parts!

8. DON’T TAKE OVER THE SPACE

Leadership is so important, but there’s nothing worse than someone who totally takes over. Not only is this not fun for all players, it will also cause you to make mistakes and slow down your team. If you’re the natural leader on your team, that’s great! Just remember that you need ALL of your team to be successful.

9. USE YOUR HINTS

One of the great things about escape rooms is that almost all of them come with built-in clues and clues. In Breakout you have your personal game master at your disposal all the time, giving you tips and helping you progress when you get stuck. Hints indicate how to control the difficulty of Breakout. So if you’re looking for a challenge you don’t have to ask for much, but if you need an easier experience you can ask for as many as you like. Many people think that taking a clue in an escape room is cheating, but that’s not the case! Game masters don’t lead you around the room; They will only give you a nudge in the right direction. It’s incredibly rare for groups to break out without clues, so don’t be afraid to use them!

10. HAVE FUN

Ultimately, the only goal should be FUN. These games are designed to challenge and excite you, make you think and laugh, and enjoy an hour with the people you care about. Whether you’re coming for a team building office party or taking the kids to a family activity, Escape Rooms should make you smile, don’t disappoint. As long as you enjoy your time together, you’ve won the Escape Room!

The Caretaker Escape Room

Deep in the dark recesses of the Oregon woods lies an evil like no other.

A disfellowshipped geneticist named Dr. Vermillion unleashed a terror that left a trail of death and destruction in its wake. A once distinguished scientist, Vermillion has now fallen out of favor for conducting immoral experiments on humans and animals. Seeking revenge for his dismissal, Vermillion has unleashed his spawn of giant wolf-like creatures on the town of Fair Oaks. Efforts by the military and law enforcement agencies have failed as the death toll continues to mount.

Deep within these woods lives a hermit known to locals as “The Caretaker.” He has no hope of escaping the horrors lurking in the woods around him without your help! Move quickly and quietly – because the caretaker’s life depends on it.

The Caretaker is one of the country’s toughest and scariest escape rooms and we’re challenging you to escape when you visit Orlando!

DIY Escape Room Ideas

Where things hide

If you create your own escape room, chances are you’ll be hiding clues around the room. The trickier your clues are hidden, the more difficult the room becomes. Here are some DIY escape room ideas to get you thinking about hiding spots for your own escape room!

(Want to jumpstart an escape room? Check out my Science Lab DIY Escape Room here!)

Crumpled up in the trash can like trash

In a tissue box or under a tissue holder

In a ballpoint pen (with the writing part of the pen removed)

Taped to the bottom of things like trash cans or floor lamps, or under the corners of rugs

Glued to the bottom of the drawers

In fake potted plants

In the trash can, hidden under the liner

Rolled up in a tic tac box

Glued to the underside of chairs or tables

Folded up and placed in an empty binder

With adhesive tape on the inside or outside of the drawers

Tucked away in the pages of a book placed in the room

If you have any type of safe or locker, hide something in it and hide the key somewhere else in the room.

Behind a picture frame or behind the picture in a picture frame

In the dead battery compartment of something electronic, like a flashlight or watch. The fact that it doesn’t work will give your guests a cue to look inside.

If you’re using a computer, put one of the clues as a file on a USB stick and hide it around the room.

A fun (or mean) idea: leave pens in the room for your guests to solve puzzles, but leave them all unsharpened. Hide a pencil sharpener elsewhere in the room.

If you want your guests to have a lot of freedom in their search, remove the room’s normal decor and replace it with decorations that match your escape room theme. Then they are welcome to search without going through your personal belongings.

Tip: Use masking tape or blue masking tape to mark anything in the room that you don’t want guests to touch or search. For example, you can tape up drawers (or air conditioner vents if you think your guests are going to be that desperate/creative!)

One last tip: make a list of where EVERYTHING is hidden. You may think you will remember, but after hiding so many clues, you may be surprised at what you forget! Then there’s nothing more frustrating than one last missing clue that neither you nor your guests can find.
