Leatherette vs Leather – Which wears better?

Faux leather is different from suede. faux leather = faux leather = plastic-coated fabric. Usually it is a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating on polyester fabric. We used to just call it vinyl, but that term fell out of favor in the auto industry because it gained a reputation in the 20th century for being cheap and easily spoiled. Real suede is leather with the soft side out. But real suede is not used for car seats because it is not durable enough. The suede inserts used in car seats are actually synthetic, usually Ultrasuede or Alcantara or equivalent.

The following is all IMHO:

Vinyl/faux leather is the easiest to clean and most resistant to stains, but is the least durable over the long term. Temperature fluctuations and exposure to sunlight eventually cause cracking of the surface coating and/or delamination of the surface from the fabric. Using a vinyl protectant (UV blocker + wax) can delay this. In my opinion, this is the least comfortable surface to sit on: cold in winter, hot in summer and not very breathable.

Genuine leather is also relatively easy to clean, but light-colored leather is prone to staining. Genuine leather seems to hold up better than faux leather, but hardening and surface cracking can still occur if you don’t use a leather conditioner regularly. Quality leather can be very comfortable as it stretches and conforms to your body shape and has some breathability, but leather feels cold in the winter and hot in the summer (although not as bad as vinyl).

Imitation suede or microfiber is the most comfortable seat for me. It won’t freeze your butt when you get in the car on a cold day or cook yourself on a hot day, and it’s breathable. In my experience, it holds up very well over time. It holds your clothes better than leather or vinyl, which is good on hard cornering but maybe not as good on long rides. It’s also a little harder to clean.

What’s the Difference Between Leather and Leatherette?

What is the difference between leather and faux leather?

The age-old debate between leather and cloth seats in cars continues. You probably already know the difference between them and have your own preference on which is better. There is another option that not many people know about: faux leather. It sounds like leather and looks like leather, so what’s the difference between leather and faux leather? Take a look at the following pros and cons of each.

What are the pros and cons of each?

Some cars offer faux leather, which is more or less a faux leather. The material is vinyl to resemble leather, but since the material is non-porous it is much easier to clean. Leather advertises itself as easy to care for, but it can still absorb dirt and spills. Another benefit of faux leather is that it doesn’t scratch as easily as leather. This can be a big problem if you drive around a lot with pets, as their claws can tear up the seats very quickly.

However, since synthetic leather is made from plastic-based products, it heats up faster in warm weather and becomes much more sticky than leather. While faux leather is a much cheaper alternative than its real counterpart, when you later resell the car you will find that real leather will increase the value of your car. However, this is really a give-and-take comparison as you will have to pay more for the leather material when you buy the car.

It all comes down to preference between these two as they each offer a fairly balanced attack of pros and cons. If the material is not that important to you and you plan to keep the vehicle for a long time, it may make more sense to simply save some money and go with faux leather or fabric.

leather vs leatherette when shopping used

The Grand Touring typically has leather. The dotted seat structure also sounds like leather.

I have a 2015 Mazda 3 2.5 Touring with leatherette. I am very happy with the faux leather. After 75,000 miles it still looks brand new and will be mistaken for leather by everyone who sees it. I suspect it will hold up much better than leather would have.
