This has been discussed here in the past, but I wanted to add a few details on my recent installation of paddle shifters on my 2017 CX-5 Premium Package Grand Touring. Here are relevant threads I referred to while researching this mod: My Goal Posting this new thread is just to confirm a few things for those considering this upgrade and to issue a warning. Warning first: When removing the steering wheel, make sure ALL CONNECTORS ARE DISCONNECTED before pulling the wheel off the shaft. All videos show this. I just wasn’t thinking, or maybe I thought I’d pull the plugs once the wheel is loose. But the wire from the wheel to the clockspring is VERY short, so when the steering wheel came loose it tore my clockspring apart. This can be an expensive mistake! The replacement clock spring for the GT Premium Pack costs over $200. I had a very awkward 15-20 minutes trying to figure out how to reassemble the clockspring. There is a lot of ribbon cable coiled there and it needs to be in the correct orientation for the steering angle sensor to work. I’ve finally managed to snap things back together and everything seems to be working normally – drove it last night and got no errors, I can fully engage both directions and the adaptive headlights seem to be aiming. So I think I’m good. OK so now some things I want to highlight about the execution of this project: 1. Can confirm that this kit from JDM Yamato for the 2017 GT with Prem is pretty much plug n play. Pkg. I have to say I’m impressed with this vendor. This was shipped from Japan and was at my house in less than a week. With international shipping, this cost me $218.2 in January 2021. Every video I watched showed that with this kit, the 2017 GT required fitting pins into an existing connector. This is just confirmation of what user Joaks said in the thread referenced above. Here are the contents of the kit: Rear steering wheel cover, shift paddles, wire harness, 4 screws to attach the shifters, steering wheel screw, cable ties (to attach the cables to the steering wheel button modules), 2-sided tape (to attach the heater module? I didn’t use it .) The green-coated wires are the new part, and they plug into the wires from the paddles.3. Removing the airbag is tricky. I had a hard time finding the tabs to press. I had to study these diagrams from the shop manual for quite a long time before I could solve them. The videos make it look easier than it really is for a beginner IMO. For one, there were multiple holes on the back of my steering wheel. You don’t want the round hole, you want the rectangular hole that’s closer to the shank. The manuals call for a T30 hex tool, but I use a smaller allen wrench. All you need is something to pry on that’s a bit thick. Here is a picture of the back of the airbag and the inside of the steering wheel. The circled areas are what you’re trying to pry loose – you’ll need to move the thick wire far enough to dislodge it. The arrows point to the clips holding the wire and tabs.4. The heater module must be relocated to the new rear cover. There are instructions on how to remove the back cover, but I haven’t found anyone dealing with the heater module. Here’s what I found: I removed the screws that hold the heater module in place before prying off the back cover. If you look through the front of the wheel you can see the bolts just above the bottom spoke. You can probably leave them in place to remove the back cover, but you’ll have to remove them to swap out the new cover. Here’s what it looks like when you put it back together: I believe the double-sided tape was supposed to be used to reattach the heater module padding to the back cover, but mine was still sticky so I didn’t use it. Hopefully I don’t get any buzzing or rattling.4. To fully utilize the new wiring harness, you must remove the steering wheel controls from the steering wheel, remove the old wiring harness, and install the new one. To remove the steering wheel remote control you need to push out these pins. It looked like it was going to be harder than it was. They’re mounted in some sort of hard rubber, and it required a decent amount of force, but push slowly and firmly and they’ll come loose. They don’t “pop”, it’s more of a slow release. I went back and forth between the two pins until it was completely loose. To detach the wiring harness you need to fasten the small zip ties near the connectors and loosen the clips holding the wiring harness to the steering wheel. Squeeze and push from the back. Here’s what it looks like when it’s out: From this point on, you “just” install the new wiring harness on the steering wheel controls – use the small zip ties to secure the new wiring harness near where it connects to the button modules – and press put them back in place, being careful to route the wires as the old ones were. Then install the paddle shifters on the back of the new cover. It’s fairly obvious how to route the wires in the channels on the cover and then snap the large white connector near the top. Connect the new connector with the green sleeved wires to the paddle shifter wiring harness. (I didn’t take a picture of it, everything put together. Doh! Was fun getting it back together I guess!) Then reinstall the steering wheel and connect the airbag, making sure your wires cross or twist on themselves. Hope this helps someone in the future. A few comments on the paddle shifters in general: My only real complaint about the CX-5 is that it seems slow at times – and it’s not because it doesn’t have enough power, it’s the gearbox that’s slow to drop into the right gear for one fast acceleration. The worst is when you want to accelerate through a corner and the downshift doesn’t come until halfway through. But it’s also annoying when you just want a quick burst of acceleration and have to wait for the gearbox to catch up. Using the shifter to shift manually mitigates this, but there are times when I don’t necessarily want to ride in manual mode, but do want to downshift quickly in anticipation of a corner or a speed burst. Now I can just nudge the paddle shifters to downshift BEFORE the corner without the extra mechanics of moving the shifter to the left, then nudging it forward a few times and then nudging it right again to get back into drive slip mode. Some have commented that the shifters are small and therefore awkward to use in a corner. To that I say this: if you’re in a turn that’s sharp enough that you can’t take it without moving your hands from 9 & 3, you shouldn’t be trying to shift anyway. Braking and downshifting should be done while you’re relatively straight or you risk annoying weight shifting. People who complain about this need some performance riding lessons. Also when I’m carving canyons – well, for one it won’t be in the CX-5, it’ll be in the Miata, but if it were me – I go into sport mode and use the lever with my right hand like I would with one traditional manual would do. In my opinion, the paddle shifters are best suited for those quick little bumps when I’m anticipating and reacting faster than the transmission control module. I like that they don’t cover the stems: I’ve actually thought about trading the CX-5 in for something with better handling, like a BMW X3, but these paddles will probably eliminate 90% of my objections to daily driving, so I think it was $200 well spent.
