What are regulation size billiard tables?

The question of the “regulatory variable” often arises. Is it a specific size? Not quite. Prescribed size refers to a specific proportion rather than a specific size.

Simply put, a “regulation-size pool table” is any table where the playing surface – or playable size – is exactly twice as long as it is wide. For example, standard 8 foot pool table dimensions of 44″ x 88″ would be considered regulation.

What size pool table is right for me?

Another frequently asked question. And as with many things, the answer is: it depends. It depends on your playing style, experience, room size and why you are getting a pool table.

7 foot pool tables

As we mentioned earlier, billiard tables have “player personalities” – the general feeling of playing on them. For some players, a 7 foot table can feel “stuffy” or “crowded,” especially if the player is used to playing at larger tables. Balls often pile into piles, so you’ll have to learn how to break with those tight pockets. Players who are really good at bankers, combos and carom shots might find playing at a 7 foot table invigorating.

If you play a lot of billiards in bars or pubs, you might want to consider a 7 foot billiard table. Having a suitable pool table at home for practicing definitely doesn’t hurt!

8 foot pool tables

Eight foot pool tables still cluster a lot, just less often than a 7 foot pool table size. Shots are more in the middle range. This size is still considered “tournament size,” but they’re more likely to be found in amateur and bar leagues. Many players consider an 8ft player flexible and a great common ground for all skill levels. They can be enjoyed by the majority of players, whatever their style.

If you play in a lot of amateur tournaments and leagues – or want to – you might want to consider sticking with a regular 8 foot pool table.

9 foot pool tables

By far the most challenging – and perhaps the most rewarding – to play. As we’ve said before, this is most commonly used for top tournament matches, particularly those that are televised. And that’s no wonder! Gameplay on a 9ft device is longer and “uncompromisingly athletic” with more room for the balls to spread out. Players need to throw more varied and targeted shots on a regular basis. From a soft security to deafening brakes. To play at your best at 9-foot tables, you need to develop a strong and effective shot, precise aiming, and excellent cue ball control for both speed and angle.

If you want to be a professional tournament player, then you’d do well to stick with the 9-foot device – assuming you have the space for it. The 9-foot tables are also common in swimming pools. So if you frequent billiard halls, it can’t hurt to have a suitable billiard table to practice with.

Calculate how big your room needs to be

When choosing the size of pool tables, room size is incredibly important. You need space to move around comfortably. You need space for the shot stroke. And there are other things you might need to think about – your style and size, any supporting pillars, especially in basements, to say the least.

We already talked about cue sizes in our cue buying guide.

Standard pool cues are approximately 57″ – 58″ long. If you are below average height or buying for a child, look for a shorter cue; They are available in 48″ and 58″ lengths.

If you are taller than 6ft 5in you may want to order a longer cue; Special order cues can be purchased up to 61″ in length.

But the length of the queue also plays a role in calculating the minimum room size.

So let’s talk about pool cue size

Regular standard pool cues range from 57 to 58 inches. Many sellers assume that you are playing with standard cues. But there are many variations to suit preferences and playstyle. Some people prefer longer, lighter cues; others prefer shorter, heavier cues.

“Shorty cues” are also an option and are only 36, 48 and 52 inches long. These are great options if your pool table is primarily for your kids. But they are also useful when it comes to avoiding load-bearing obstacles in a room.

However, the length of your cue is important in determining the playable space as you pull back for the shot. You don’t want a wall interfering with the retreat.

When calculating how much space you need for a pool table, you should consider the length of the pool cue you typically use. All of this thinking can seem daunting, but there’s a simple equation that can help:

It’s not often that we apply the math we learned in junior high. But this is such a time.

Playing Area Length = Playing Area Length + (Cue Length *2)

Playing Area Width = Playing Area Width + (Cue Length *2)

Remember that “playing area” is defined as the space you need to comfortably play billiards without encountering any obstacles or walls. Some people say you should pin an extra 3 inches to account for travel. However, this is optional and depends on your gaming attitude and style.

Suppose you want to buy a 7 foot bar style pool table and play with a 48 inch pool cue:

Length of play area = 78 + (48 * 2) = 174″

Width of play area = 39 + (48 * 2) = 135″

A comfortable “playing area” for a 7 foot pool table with a 48 inch cue would need to be 135″ x 174″ or 11’3″ x 14’6″.

So does this equation work? Let’s look at our graph again:

Standard table sizes

“What is the standard pool table size?”

There are several “standard sizes” for pool tables in the US: 7 foot, 8 foot, 8 1/2 foot and 9 foot long. See the table below for full dimensions in both inches and centimeters.

“What is the minimum room size for a pool table?”

METHOD #1 – Rough rule of thumb:

The simple – but rough – “rule of thumb” is: start with the length and width. Add 5 feet to each side of the table – all the way around.

For example, an 8′ x 4′ table requires approximately an 18′ x 14′ space. (That’s 8+5+5=18 and 4+5+5=14.)

METHOD #2 – Cue Length PLUS:

This method is more precise and gives more leeway to maneuver a longer clue. So the minimum room size depends on the size of your table AND the length of your cue. The standard cue length is 58 inches. If you play with a shorter cue, e.g. B. 48 inch or 52 inch, your room size may be smaller.

How big should the room be to accommodate your pool table? This is how the minimum room sizes are determined:

The minimum WIDTH of the room must be the same: the width of the table PLUS twice the length of the cue.

The minimum length of the room must be the same: the length of the table PLUS twice the length of the cue.

You’ll have a lot more fun if there’s plenty of room to maneuver around the table. As you play, you want to work your way around the table and not feel restricted or restricted in any way. You want to be able to move the cue anywhere you need good posture and a good pull. Therefore add a queue length around all sides of the table.

Take a comfortable shot

Minimum room sizes for each table size when using a standard 58 inch cue:

7 ft table – minimum room size 13 x 16 ft (156″ x 192″)

You may be able to easily fit a table into a smaller space by using a shorter cue. To give you a better idea, here are the minimum dimensions for a 48 inch cue:

“Is my room big enough for this table?”

Back to the room dimensions – For example…

Let’s say you have a room with available space that is 16 feet 8 inches long and 14 feet wide. Convert that to total inches. The result is 200 inches long and 168 inches wide. Now let’s return to the area available for the pool table by subtracting twice the length of the cue in each direction, length and width.

We know that the length of our cue is 58 inches for each side of the pool table, and double that 116 inches – to maneuver the cue on the sides.

So the room length: 200 inches, minus 116 cue inches, equals 84 inches – to account for the length of the pool table.

The WIDTH of the room: 168 inches minus twice the length of the cue, 116 inches equals 52 inches – to account for the width of the pool table.

This gives you room dimensions of 84 x 52 cm for the table.

What if a beam or supporting pole is in the way?

If you have a downstairs room that would make an ideal game room for playing pool, but has some sort of beam or pole hazard, don’t fret. Many, many households have this type of challenge and it’s just not a big deal.

What is the least cumbersome spot for the pole?

If possible, you should hold the bar on one side of the table rather than at the end, as it tends to be less of a nuisance on the side.

The best place to position the bar is next to the side pocket – this is statistically the lowest percentage of shots so it is the least likely to affect play.

However, if it is unavoidable to place the bar at the end, it is better to place it at the end where you break from, as the cue ball can be moved to avoid the bar’s obstruction.

What can I do if the pole is in the way?

Many excellent players have embraced a shorter cue that allows them to maneuver around bars and other obstacles with only 24 inches of clearance. Short cues come in different sizes; 36 inch, 48 inch and 52 inch.

Yes that’s right, we didn’t mention the 36″ cue in the discussion above. That’s because it’s not used much for adult gaming. It’s an excellent length for children.
