Rum from Jamaica

With a history as long and complex as the country itself, Jamaican rum stands out from rums made in other Caribbean countries thanks to its unique fermentation process, broad product range and distinct ‘funk’.

Jamaican rums are fermented in one of two ways for Distiller, according to Matt Strickland. The first is wild fermentation, where airborne loose yeast lands on open vats with pre-rum and ferments for weeks. The other is to add dunder, the leftover fermented liquid from previously distilled rum, to fermenting rum. Both methods produce loads of fruity and funky flavors that are unmistakably Jamaican.

Today there are only about seven distilleries across Jamaica that produce a range of rum brands. The most common rums made in Jamaica include white rum, golden rum, aged rum, and overproof rum, which must be 126 proof or higher.

When you just hear the word ‘rum’, white sandy beaches, palm trees and clear blue skies come to mind. It’s an ideal summer getaway while you sit back and enjoy the tropical notes of rum.

But getting drunk quickly can take away the joy of that moment. You may be wondering how much rum gets you drunk?

How much rum gets you drunk?

A few shots from a standard bottle of rum will get a person slightly drunk. With 40% vol. rum is like any other spirit with a high alcohol content. But aside from alcohol content, a few factors affect a person’s alcohol tolerance.

Factors include age, gender, sleep regime, and food intake. People’s physique can also affect how quickly they can get drunk. A heavy person with more muscle mass will get drunk more slowly than someone with the same weight but more body fat.

1. Alcohol by volume

Most rum bottles have a standard strength of at least 40% ABV. A normal body type will take three to four standard shots to feel the effects of the spirit. It amounts to 120ml to 135ml rum intake.

Overproof rums with more than 60% ABV need to be toned down a bit to soften the effect.

2. Age, sex and body weight

Healthy young people have faster metabolisms than old people, making them process alcohol faster than our old people.

Women tend to have a smaller physique and more body fat than men. On the other hand, men have larger physiques and more muscles to dilute the alcohol faster.

3. Alcohol consumption

A young, healthy body doesn’t guarantee a slower high, especially if you’re gulping down the shots. It is better to have a standard drink and rest in between.

4. Use of medication/drugs

Taking too much cough or cold medicine can have the same effect as being drunk. The effects can range from dizziness to unconsciousness. And if the body absorbs alcohol while on this medication, it can lead to serious health problems.

It is an important step to consult a doctor first before drinking.

5. Sleep regime and state of health

Ingesting rum with a high alcohol content can quickly make a sleep-deprived person drunk. The same is true for people with insomnia who depend on alcohol to get them to sleep. Meanwhile, the presence of drunken genes in some people makes them more susceptible to the effects of alcohol.

6. Water intake and meal consumed

Drinking water between rum shots can slow down the effects of the high. But the meal you eat before drinking is also important.

Protein-rich foods like yogurt stay in the stomach longer, which slows alcohol absorption. Bananas can help you get drunk slowly due to the high fiber and potassium content [1].

7. Tolerance level

People who regularly drink alcoholic beverages like rum have higher blood alcohol levels, or BAC levels, in their bodies. For this reason, the body already knows how to process alcohol faster than those who only drink occasionally.

The transition to Kingston 62 in the UK follows the successful rebranding in their home country of Jamaica earlier this year. Although there is a new name and a new look, nothing changes in the recipe or alcohol strength. The Appleton name will henceforth only be used for premium rum products such as Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.

POS material will be made available at select Cash & Carry locations for a limited time to help retailers communicate the move from Appleton to Kingston 62 in-store.

Kingston 62 Gold and White 70cl are now available wholesale, with an RRP of £17.50 for Gold and £16 for White. The 35cl version of Gold will be available in August (RRP £10).

The rum category is growing in popularity in the UK, posting a 13.1% year-on-year value growth in off-trade, brand owner Campari reports. Rum also has significant penetration among younger consumers – 70% of spirits drinkers aged 18-24 drink rum, rising to 79% of spirits drinkers aged 25-34.

Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum has launched a new premium blend and also redesigned the bottle and label to reflect the history of the brand and distillery as well as Jamaican heritage.

The new Eight Year Old Reserve Rum will join Appleton’s Signature Blend and 12 Year Old Rare Casks Blend in the brand’s core range. The rum is described as having “flavors of spicy fruit and oak, followed by hints of honey, vanilla and Appleton’s signature orange peel note”.

Master Blender Joy Spence says the new rum reflects the terroir of Appleton Estate’s home in Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, with every step of the production process carefully managed – from harvesting and crafting our molasses to distillation, blending and bottling.

The new rum will be available in Australia in the redesigned bottle with a new cork stopper and label.

In Jamaica, they were able to refine the process and expand trade, and the rum industry boomed, in large part due to the role slaves played in its manufacture.

“Slaves are the godfathers of the rum business and have kept it alive,” says KK Hall, global brand director of rums for Campari Group, which imports Jamaica’s Appleton Estate rum. “When the anti-slavery sentiment started and slavery was finally abolished [in Jamaica] in the 1830s, it really impacted rum, because slaves were the people who were really behind the making of rum.”

The strength of the anti-slavery movement and the war between Britain and France led to a massive decline in rum production in Jamaica in the late 19th century. In 1893 there were about 148 rum distilleries across the island. By 1948, that number had dwindled dramatically to 25. Today only four distilleries remain in operation in Jamaica: Hampden Estate, Appleton Estate, Worthy Park Estate and National Rums of Jamaica. But the quantity of rums produced has grown, as has the variety; Jamaica produces enough alcohol to fill 20 Olympic-size swimming pools each year, it is said, and it’s sold in over 70 countries around the world.

What Makes Jamaican Rum Unique?

Jamaican rum considered full-bodied is molasses fermented in large vats called “puncheons” and distilled in pot stills, a practice dating back to the 17th century. Full-bodied rums rely on natural or so-called “wild” fermentation to give them a distinct flavor.

“Loved for centuries, the famous ‘Jamaican Funk’ exudes tropical fruit, wood, gum, smoke, spices and sweet caramel and molasses, perfect for mixing, punch and cocktails,” says Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell. “Jamaican rums are also inherently sweet as it is illegal to add sugar to Jamaican rums.”

Also unique to Jamaican rum is the island’s limestone, a mineral-rich sedimentary rock enriched with calcium carbonate.

“Jamaica is an ideal environment for growing sugar cane. It comes from so-called limestone water, which is also needed for Jamaican rum and Appleton Estate rum, which makes the end product smoother and a little bit sweeter,” says Hall.

Aside from molasses and limestone water, there are other qualities that define Jamaican rum: it’s made with all-natural, non-GMO yeast; it is aged in oak barrels; and no sugar or artificial flavors are added at any point in the process. When flavor is added, as in the case of coconut rum, it is labeled “Flavored Rum” on the bottle, and the coconut flavor is all natural.

“With the molasses and the limestone-filtered water, you have these raw materials that are put through a process that we monitor very, very closely,” says Hall. “Just like the making of a fine wine or a single malt Scotch, it’s done by hand throughout the process in a very careful and very quality-focused way.”

The final steps involve blending the rums and then aging them, some for many decades.

The prestige of the country of origin, the number of years a rum has been aged, and the availability of a particular rum all play a role in pricing, and Jamaica holds the distinction of producing the most expensive rum in the world. A bottle of 1949 Wray and Nephew Rum can be yours for as little as $54,000. If you’re wondering how much a good premium bottle of Jamaican rum will cost you that isn’t a limited edition or highly aged bottle, Edward Hamilton, author of several books on rum, says that compared to other rums, “genuine Jamaican rums are generally reasonably priced.” Expect to retail $24 to $60 for a minimally aged rum. “Of course there are more expensive rums like those sold in airport duty free shops in Jamaica where you pay for fancy bottles, but you can find better rums from the distillers,” he says.

How to drink Jamaican rum

How does a rum connoisseur prefer to drink his rum? Simple – with as little extra as possible. (This includes as little Coke as possible.) Burrell, who is credited with launching the U.K. Having created the world’s first international rum festival, RumFest believes it’s best to stay clean when trying Jamaican rum for the first time. “I always say that the first experience with a rum should be good. Then you can really taste it and appreciate the taste,” he says.

Appleton Estate Rum

Appleton Rum starts with sugar cane. In Jamaica, rum is made from molasses, the thick, sticky liquid that’s left over after the cane juice has been boiled and the sugar crystals removed. Pot still rums are a Jamaican specialty – big flavored, robust rums with more “funk” than their Caribbean cousins, especially when compared to rums from Spanish-speaking islands.

Where is it made?

Appleton Rum is made on an estate in the fertile Nassau Valley on either side of the Black River in southwest Jamaica. The origins of Appleton Estate date back to 1655 when the English conquered Jamaica from the Spanish. Frances Dickinson, whose grandsons Caleb and Ezekiel were the earliest known owners of the Appleton Estate, took part in this conquest of Jamaica, and it is believed that the Appleton Estate was part of the land grant Dickinson received as a reward for his services.

After many generations of ownership by the Dickinson family, the Appleton Estate was sold from the family in 1845. From then on it has been owned by a number of prominent Jamaican families, each of whom helped increase the size and potential of the Appleton Estate by purchasing additional tracts of land planted with sugar cane. During these years, the winery produced several different pot still rums and began to develop a reputation as a reliable source of quality spirits, a reputation that continues to this day.

How do you drink Appleton Rum?

Appleton rums, especially the 21-year-old, are great on their own. But the signature blend also does particularly well in a variety of cocktails — including rum favorites like daiquiri and mai tai. Master Blender Joy Spence especially recommends blending with cranberry juice or Ting grapefruit soda. For its reserve blend, however, she recommends adding fresh coconut water to create what’s known locally as an “epic” serve.

Types of Appleton Rum

Appleton is famous for its aged rums and the 21 year old is a particular favorite among connoisseurs. Thanks to the island’s warm climate, there is a much higher evaporation rate, meaning aged Jamaican rums like 21 Year Old show a higher degree of maturation than similarly aged Scotch whiskies. Perhaps the pinnacle of Appleton’s current offering is the 25 Year Old Joy Anniversary Blend, a rich, complex combination of rums aged between 25 and 35 years.
