Brown color combinations
When trying to find combinations for a specific color, it usually helps to look at the different combinations of that color, like the analogous colors, monochromatic colors, triad colors, complementary colors, and so on. The approach differs slightly when trying to judge which colors go well with brown, as brown is a mixture of so many different colors and confuses most people when you go in depth as to what the combinations are for each color.
Discovering colors that go well with brown is a lot easier than you might think. When evaluating the following color combinations, be sure to consider the following definitions:
Color theory Rule Color Description Analogous colors These are three or more colors that appear side by side on the color wheel. This means they are usually warm or cool colors used together to create a rainbow effect and a sense of harmony in a room. Monochromatic Colors This is when different shades of darker or lighter shades of the same color are used. This is a very contemporary yet timeless color design approach that works well with almost any color. Triadic Colors These are three colors that, when placed at 60 degrees on the color wheel, form a perfect triangle. These colors are very contrasting and usually combine both warm and cold tones. Here it is best to choose a focus color and only use the other two colors as accents or as sparingly as possible. Complementary Colors These are colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. These colors are strong contrasts but can complement each other very well when used correctly and are always worth a look. Split Complements These are the colors next to the complements. This combination is less expected but should be used minimally when used in the same shades as it can be quite taxing on the eyes.
What colors go well with brown?
Brown is such a vibrant color, ranging from rich and vibrant tones to very subtle and muted variations. Certain shades of brown even represent very different design styles: light, yellowish-brown wood furniture is common in Scandinavian interiors, while rich, warm brown wood furniture was well known in the mid-century.
Brown has always been present in interior design but is rarely recognized as a favorite colour, making sales difficult if not understood. What most seem to underestimate is brown’s ability to stand on its own without the added help of bright colors, which most seem to be drawn to. Brown has always been seen indoors throughout the ages, regardless of the style of the period. Compared to other neutrals like gray or black that were missing at certain times, brown can be considered a timeless color.
Braun stands for strength, quality, reliability and safety. A look at a large oak tree can confirm this connection. High-end brands like Louis Vuitton use brown in their branding and products for this very reason.
The task of choosing colors to go with brown is much easier when the brown in question is identified as one of the following: warm brown, neutral brown, and cool brown. These categories are differentiated by the undertone of different shades of brown. Some browns have warm undertones of red and orange, while others have clear cool blues and purples. Other shades of brown have a green undertone and can be considered neutral brown. If the undertone is very difficult to distinguish, it is most likely a neutral brown as well. It is important to note that there are many variations of browns within these shades, but for the sake of clarity the following will be used throughout:

Warm brown combined with yellow and orange
Warm brown has a visible hint of orange or red. Think mahogany. Auburn was very popular in the mid-20th century when mid-century modern furniture was all the rage. More inspiration from mid-century modern: There are many combinations including orange and yellow with sleek wooden furniture. The reason this color combination worked so well is because they picked up the analogous colors from the red or orange undertones of the wood furniture. It is important to note that these are all warm colors that are very pleasing to the eye and together create a sense of harmony in any room.

Brown combined with green
Brown complementary colors can be determined by assessing the undertone of the specific brown. The complementary color of warm/auburn is green, making green one of the best colors to pair with brown. Using greenery in the form of plants is a great way to add color to a room and accentuate your wooden furniture without making it too thematic. This is a great natural and earthy color combo that you can’t go wrong with.
Try to keep the green minimal depending on the hue as in large quantities it can be very unforgiving next to brown if a light green is used as in the chart below.

Cool brown combined with orange
Cool brown means that a blue undertone is visible. This shade of brown is usually associated with good quality and masculinity. Blue’s complementary color is orange, which makes orange a great combination with cool brown. An earthy orange, like terracotta, works best with a cool brown.

Neutral dark brown combined with black and white
If you are looking at a dark brown color and there is no visible warm or cool undertone, it can be considered a neutral brown that can be paired with almost any color and looks great as it is a true neutral in every sense of the word. This type of brown pairs well with other neutral colors like white and black as it is very contrasting and makes a contemporary statement. Black and brown go well together as a textile pattern.
When using these three colors as a base, think of brown complementary colors such as green or orange (depending on the undertone of brown) as they are great for adding pops of color in the form of decor.
Another way to subtly introduce black into your brown interior is through hardware such as door handles, plumbing fixtures, and small pieces of furniture like dining chairs. If the desired mood of the interior is industrial or more masculine, this color scheme is the right choice. If masculinity isn’t quite what you’re looking for, incorporating white pieces of furniture or using white as the background of the room will soften everything and create balance in the room.

Neutral light brown combined with creams
As in the example above, if you are faced with a very light brown that does not appear warmer than cool, or vice versa, it can be considered a neutral tan. A light brown is a great neutral color to work with as it is very modern and will go with any colour, whether it is very bright pops of color or muted pastels. Light brown also works well as a monotone as it creates a very calming vibe.

Neutral brown combined with teal
Teal relates to brown’s earth symbolism and is of course one of the colors that goes well with brown as it represents the ocean and completes the earth-ocean duo. Teal looks great with any neutral shade of brown. Don’t pair teal with a very warm brown or too cool a brown as this will clash.
It must be a neutral brown.

A bonus tip for interior design
Metals should also be considered when deciding what colors go with brown. People tend to have trouble combining different metals with brown. The reason for this is that the shade of brown is not consistently considered when choosing metal fittings. As a rule of thumb, warm metals like copper and bronze should be paired with warm browns, and cold metals like chrome should be paired with cool browns. For example, if you have hardwood floors throughout your home that have a very warm, orange undertone, copper hardware and fixings are a good option.
Brown is a great color if you are aiming for a calm and natural environment. It works great as a neutral background for pops of color and can also stand on its own. More colors go with brown than colors that don’t. The most important factor in choosing colors that go well with brown is whether the specific brown has a warm, cool, or neutral undertone, and going from there. Also, keep in mind that colors found in nature pair well with brown because of their familiarity.
frequently asked Questions
Which wall colors go well with brown carpets?
Brown carpet is very popular, especially in older homes. If changing the carpet is not in your budget or power, consider the wall colors as it can have a huge impact on the entire room. A very light stone color goes well with any brown undertone. Try to avoid stark white walls as this will add extra emphasis to the brown carpet. Brown complementary colors can also be used successfully as a wall color where a brown carpet is present. Remember that these complementary colors should be used as muted tones or undertones as they can be quite overwhelming depending on the size of the room.
Does gray go with brown furniture?
The short answer is yes, gray goes well with brown furniture. As always, the colors are important. It’s important to apply the undertone of the brown in question to the other prominent colors used around it, and that includes gray. Cool walnut furniture looks best with a light, cool grey. Warm meranti wood pairs well with warm grays like greige. If the pieces of furniture are very large and prominent in the room, try to avoid dark charcoal tones as this could collide with the furniture and swallow it up.

CHOOSE YOUR IDEAL COLOR SCHEME
Brown is a versatile choice for living room or dining room furniture as it can take on many different moods. Depending on what it is paired with, a space anchored by brown upholstery or wood can be warm and enveloping, earthy and natural, elegant and sophisticated, or full of glamour. Your first step in choosing walls to upgrade your brown furniture is to determine what overall mood you want to create. Read on to determine your brown furniture personality…
For the Nester: The Soothing Sanctuary
This is the number one choice for those of us for whom the Netflix and Chill activity was invented. If fluffy socks, a roaring fire, and intimate gatherings are your thing, you’ll probably find the happiest spaces that give you a sense of cozy intimacy.
If you have a dark brown sofa or other furniture, it is best to complement them with medium-colored walls. Think warm golden yellows, soft mid-blues, calming grey-greens, creamy tans or soothing grays. Our Creative Director, Danielle, suggests looking to Benjamin Moore’s Historical Colors palette for inspiration and ideas. The key is to think “soft” – you don’t want your walls to pop so much, you want to wrap them up.
For those with a medium brown sofa or medium sized wooden furniture, up the coziness factor by going a few shades deeper in the wall colors. For example, Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy or Knoxville Gray balance beautifully with a camel sofa or walnut coffee table. Again, your goal is to keep things soft and warm, so avoid bright or bright colors.
For the natural scientist: The organic oasis
If you prefer a walking trail rather than a mall, you’ll enjoy living in a nature-inspired space. Luckily, this is easy to achieve with brown furniture… Mother Nature herself used a savvy eye for decoration when she chose brown as the base color for the floor and trees! Here you can really lean into earth tones to create an inviting color scheme. Think burnt umber and warm peach for a Southwestern palate, rich terracotta and mustard yellow to evoke a suntanned Tuscan landscape, green for a verdant jungle vibe, a jumble of grays and ivory to mimic the natural mosaic of river rocks, sky blue for one brilliant contrast to bark brown. If you’re not sure where to start, just look out your window for inspiration.
For the nature-inspired space, texture is key. Grasscloth wallpaper can add a great earthiness, as can rugs made from natural fibers like sisal, jute and seagrass. Every surface in your living room is a chance to vary your textures. Imagine: nubbed boucle throw pillows, a stone-topped coffee table, a fur rug, clay pots as accessories.
For the discerning: The elegant enclave
Nobody made brown more fabulous than the late decorator Billy Baldwin. Its elegant rooms featured plenty of rich, glossy browns, proving that brown, when done right, can be as iconic and chic as classic black and white.
Any shade of brown, from light sand to dark chocolate, becomes ultra-sophisticated when paired with creamy ivory walls. The high contrast with the brown color provides a rich, premium feel that is timeless. For accent colors, consider a sophisticated contrasting cornflower blue, or stick with a tonal palette of neutrals like ivory, sand, camel, toffee and cocoa.
While all shades of ivory walls complement brown beautifully, the harshness of pure white takes away its warmth, so make sure to stick with softer, mellower tones. You want a tonal contrast, not a strong one. Some of our favorite ivory colors are Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee and Navajo White.
For the Dazzle fanatic: The Glam Pad
If you’re bold and quirky, a pop of color to accent your brown furniture is the way to go! Thanks to the cult brand Hermes, nothing says sophisticated chic like deep brown and orange. Plus, orange walls add a big dose of cheerfulness to any room. Choose an orange that is as close as possible to a real orange; Even tangerine is great when paired with brown. Add an ivory rug or other pieces of furniture, some sparkling brass accents, and you have a fabulous ’70s-inspired glam underlay worthy of Charlie’s Angels.
By the way, you don’t necessarily have to paint the whole room orange to get the swing you want. You can always choose a wall as an accent wall and still get a good dose of visual impact.
If orange isn’t your thing but you still crave glamour, consider painting your walls a deep, glossy brown. Going tan in tan might seem counterintuitive, but doing so can actually create sensational and rich continuity. The key to keeping your room from feeling like a cave is choosing a high gloss color for the walls to reflect the light.
Really, any color, when applied to your walls in a glossy finish, gives brown furniture a very special feel. However, be sure to hire a good professional painter as the walls really need to be prepared well for high gloss paint to ensure you get a smooth, even finish.
COLORS TO NOTE CAREFULLY
You already know to steer clear of stark white walls with brown furniture, but here are a few other colors to consider carefully:
Red. Any shade of red, from cherry to maroon, brings out the red undertones in dark brown furniture and makes it look muddy. It also doesn’t do medium brown furniture any favors, as the combination looks rather boring.
Any shade of red, from cherry to maroon, brings out the red undertones in dark brown furniture and makes it look muddy. It also doesn’t do medium brown furniture any favors, as the combination looks rather boring. Fuchsia. The combination of brown and pink had a big moment in the ’90s, but the problem with trends is that they quickly become outdated. Pale pink with brown is fine when decorating a little girl’s room, but for adult rooms, pass on the pink and opt for more sophisticated hues that pack a punch like orange, lime green, or bright sky blue.
BROWN BEDROOM FURNITURE
All of the above wall color suggestions work equally well in a bedroom with brown furniture. A lot of people put all their decorating energy (and budget) into their living room, but since your bedroom is where you start and end each day, it deserves some love too! Whether you sleep in a modern pine bed or a bed covered in brown velvet, follow the guidelines outlined here to make your brown bedroom furniture the stuff dreams are made of.

The first recorded use of chocolate as a color name in English was in 1737.[2]
This color is a representation of the color of the most common type of chocolate, milk chocolate.
Etymology[ edit ]
The word chocolate entered the English language from Spanish.[3] How the word got into Spanish is less certain, and there are several competing explanations. Perhaps the most commonly cited explanation is that “chocolate” comes from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, from the word “chocolātl”, which many sources derive from the Nahuatl word “xocolātl”, derived from the words ” xococ” meaning sour or bitter, and “ātl” meaning water or refreshment.[3] However, as William Bright noted[4], the word “chocolatl” does not occur in Central Mexican colonial sources, making this an unlikely derivation. Santamaria[5] gives a derivation from the Yucatec Maya word “chokol” meaning hot and the Nahuatl “atl” meaning water. More recently [when?] Dakin and Wichmann derive it from another Nahuatl term, “chicolatl” from eastern Nahuatl, meaning “beaten drink”. [6] They derive this term from the word for the foam stick “Chicoli”.
