Model T Ford Forum: Add on oil filter results, see the dirt

Add up oil filter results, see the dirt

Posted by Neil Kaminar on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 12:00 p.m.:

My car isn’t stock so I don’t feel bad about fitting an external oil line. While at it I added an oil filter, Fram 1654A. It is actually a hydraulic filter because this filter does not have a check valve that would stop the flow of oil through the filter. I also have the screen and magnet in the gear cover.

I cut open the filter to see what it had trapped after a few hundred miles. I change the filters when the oil flow is severely reduced. Here are some photos of the setup and stuff in the filter. There is some lint from the rebuild and some paint shavings from inside the engine and a lot of just plain dirt.

If I had just one word to describe your results: WOW!

Your oil filter seems just as legitimate to me as an oil line to the outside. I bet it adds significantly to engine life.

Neil,

I wonder how you mounted your filter head? Did you mount directly to the frame or make a bracket for mounting?

Posted by Freighter Jim on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 1:28 PM:

Hello Neil,

Great idea but you might want to upgrade from the Fram brand:

Personally I like Mobil 1 synthetic oil filters but I don’t know if they provide a cross reference to this one….

terry cloth,

I started with a Model T Ranch oil filter kit, see http://modeltranch.com/show_product.asp?idProduct=14. The kit came with a broken Y-connector, so I started modifying the kit. I eliminated the small diameter bypass. I still have the internal oil line and am checking the oil flow through the filter to see if it needs to be changed. I couldn’t find the filters that the Model T Ranch uses, so I buy my Fram P1654A filters online. I also didn’t like the small set screw they use to attach the head to the frame so I retapped the hole and used a larger grade 5 screw with fine steps.

Jim,

There isn’t much pressure created by the flywheel spinning the oil, so the filter used must not have an anti-drainback valve that would prevent the oil from flowing through the filter. I’m sure there are better filters out there, but any filter is better than no filter.

Posted by Will Copeland – West Melbourne Florida on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 1:54 PM:

I’m confused as to how it works. Don’t you need a pressure system to use such a filter? How do you make the oil flow through the filter?

Posted by Scott Conger – Wyoming on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 2:25 p.m.:

gravity and patience.

Posted by Neil Kaminar on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 2:52 pm:

Will,

Most oil filters for cars and trucks are designed to work with a high-pressure oil pump. They have a valve that only opens when the pressure reaches 10psi or more. The Model T slingshot flywheel doesn’t generate nearly as much pressure, so you’ll need to use a filter that doesn’t have a valve. Apparently hydraulic filters don’t have a valve, allowing the filter to flow fairly freely. It does slow down the flow of oil, but a lot still gets to the front of the engine, and over time the filter catches a lot of crap.

From Don – Conroe, TX on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 4:15 pm:

Seems to me it would be important to saturate the filter before installing it and running the engine…right?

Otherwise a heap of oil would be segregated for a period of time as it passed through the filter.

Posted by Scott Conger – Wyoming on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 5:24 p.m.:

There would be a delay, but the internal oil line would supply sufficient oil for that period of time, as is normally the case while the engine is running

This is what I was looking for, in fact I just bookmarked this page.

Neil, is your filter powered by a magneto external lubricator or something like a Ford Faithful? Any other pics you can post would be greatly appreciated!

Posted by Neil Kaminar on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 6:00 p.m.:

My outer oil line is the Model T Ranch Super Duty line, see http://www.modeltranch.com/show_product.asp?idProduct=13. It was attached to the side of the pig’s head and the front of the engine pan. I disassembled the engine when I installed it.

Posted by John Doolittle on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 7:31 p.m.:

It would be interesting if someone did a test to see what percentage of the note (5%, 9%, 17% right?) the oil stops flowing through the line to lubricate the front main line. It seems that a low slung line with a filter tends to restrict flow when climbing when the front main needs it most. At one point the oil needs to flow uphill (without a pump).

Agree or disagree?

Posted by Neil Kaminar on Tuesday December 18, 2018 – 7:58pm:

John,

The flywheel exerts a little pressure, so there may be a current going up a hill. When I get a chance I’ll park it on a hill and photograph the oil flow. With family stuff coming up this weekend, it may be a while before I can take the test.

Posted by lorenzo leon on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 8:09 p.m.:

Looks like we think it looks equally good, I use an oil filter adapter [hydraulic I think] and found an oil filter that doesn’t have an anti-drain valve, see #that fits and put it on the bracket on the engine , I taped a valve to check the oil flow

and guided to the bottom of the pan lid

Good work

Posted by Freighter Jim on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – 9:55 p.m.:

Thanks Neil for the explanation.

This is a good thread as noted by others.

How do you check the oil on a Model T?

Underneath the car on the right hand side, which would be the Bellhousing on any other car, you will see two petcocks. The oil should be between the two fuel taps. You can open the top one and add oil until it drips out. Oil capacity on a “T” is 4 qts.

How much oil does a Model T need?

4 liters standard. 5 qts are used by some riders when there are a lot of hills.

Where is the oil filling point?

Crouch down and look under the vehicle. The oil motor drain plug is located within 0.30-0.61 m (1-2 feet) of the front of the vehicle and sits directly under the motor. It is located at the bottom of a large tank called the oil pan.

What oil do you use in a Model T?

We recommend only light quality gas engine oil for use in the Model T engine. A light grade of oil is preferred as it will naturally reach the bearing surfaces more readily and consequently less heat will be generated from friction.

Should I use synthetic or high detergent oil in my Model T?

That means no synthetic or heavy cleaning oil. Here is an excerpt from the 1911 Ford Model T Owner’s Manual: We recommend only light, premium gas engine oil for the Model T engine.

What type of oil should I use in my Ford Model T?

We recommend using 10W-40 or 15W-40 as it is the only oil on the market that contains trace elements such as Zinc and Phosphorus which are necessary to reduce wear on the pushrods and camshaft. I personally use Valvoline XLD Premium 15W-40, it’s cheap and works perfectly.

How far would a Model T go on one tank of gas?

It had a limited range, lasting about 20 to 40 miles before needing to be refueled.
