During the spirit week, students celebrate their school pride by participating in activities related to the school’s athletic teams, wearing school colors, and entering spirit week competitions. Ghost week is usually held the week before school returns home, but any week of the year can be used. This gives students a chance to be creative with their outfits while showing class pride.

On Monday 3rd June, RHS kicked off its final Spirit Week just before the summer holidays. Monday’s theme was monochromatic, meaning that each class was assigned a specific color. Freshmen wore pink, sophomores wore orange, juniors yellow, and teachers green. All classes compete to see who has the most spirit, so good luck to all classes!

I absolutely love the look of black and white: black and white shoes, dresses, outfits, decorations… you name it! But what color shoes to wear with black and white dresses or outfits, you ask? That, my friends, is a very good question and one that I can definitely help you answer!

Whether you want to mix and match a black and white dress or an outfit with stripes, polka dots, random black and white color blocks, or patterns, it really doesn’t matter.

This guide considers and includes all of the above and more. This way you can look like the street style star you know you are 😉

What is most important is that the outfit is a contrasting monochromatic dress or look with no “beige” or warm undertones. Below are my top 10 favorite shoe colors and patterns to pair with monochrome.

Shoes to wear with a black and white dress

1. Black shoes, heels, boots and sandals

A simple answer to the question of what color to wear shoes with black and white dresses is black. No big surprise, as black shoes go with pretty much any outfit and are an easy choice for black and white outfits.

Opt for a black boot for a more casual shoe and dress combination, while a minimalist sandal, with or without a heel, completes an evening look.

2. White shoes with black and white dresses

White shoes, pumps, sneakers or sandals go well with these monochromatic dresses. Just make sure the heels are the same shade of white as the dress or your outfit won’t look matching with the shoes. White shoes with pink dresses also look great!

You wouldn’t immediately think this pairing would work, but it’s my absolute styling favorite! Black and white shoes look great with white and black dresses, overalls or similar.

For best impact, aim for a black shoe when there is more white in the outfit and vice versa. Black and white shoes also go great with most brightly colored dresses. And are great shoes to wear with black dresses!

4. Black and white dress with silver shoes

If you are looking for something other than black or white or a combination of both, silver shoes are the best. Because the best metallic shoe that goes with a black and white dress is undoubtedly a silver one!

It’s something of the shiny version of white shoes and looks amazing on all skin tones. Go for specular metallic silver that looks much more dramatic and eye-catching with black and white dresses. And my personal shoe color to combine with Navy!

Bright, colorful shoes look great with black and white outfits. To be honest, there is no color that does not complement it, but the brighter and more saturated the color, the better it will look!

Do you even know the color wheel? Well, any primary or secondary color looks amazing and contrasts beautifully with black and white.

Remember that bright, colorful shoes are a great way to add color to your black and white dress/outfit. But the real question is what shoe color goes best with these ebony/ivory outfits? Here are a few of my favorites:

By far the most popular color for black and white outfits is red. Blood red, special! And you can’t blame the prevailing pairing: it looks incredible, with a high contrast!

6. Light green shoes

People don’t usually think about adding green shoes to an outfit, but seriously folks, a lot of you are missing out! Apple green like the Nine West heels I’m wearing above is a great shade that looks great with black and white outfits but also goes well with a ton of other colors and patterns.

7. Black and white dress with pink shoes

Fuchsia and hot pink are fashionista favorites when it comes to pairing shoes with black and white dresses (especially striped black and white dresses!). But that doesn’t mean other shades of pink don’t look just as good.

Shades of orange-pink or salmon, magenta or lilac-pink – as long as they’re bright and cheerful – will make your contrasting outfit fashionblog-ready!

8. Black and White Dress with Blue Shoes (Love Cobalt!)

Cobalt is such a trending color and its ability to sneak into both high and low fashion looks season after season is a testament to the hue’s staying power. It also goes with almost everything and/or contrasts well!

In heel or sandal form, cobalt blue shoes look great with black and white dresses and outfits and can easily be worn from day to night. It’s also a great alternative to other colors like red that may be too trendy for certain work environments.

If you like wearing blue shoes with a black and white dress or outfit, other shades of blue that work well include turquoise, royal blue, and a deep baby blue.

9. Orange shoes and coral shoes

If you want to break out of the plain ruby ​​red mold, why not give orange a shot? A great, unexpected shoe color that’s making a comeback in fashion in general is coral, an orange-red hue that pairs beautifully with black and white outfits.

I’ve been contemplating adding leopard print shoes to black and white outfits as a styling choice as this can easily go in a yes or no direction VERY quickly. How to wear leopard print shoes with this combination depends pretty much on the animal print itself. A larger leopard print with a greater contrast to the base color works best. And the less brown and general warmth in the print, the better.

These animal print shoes look great with black and white striped dresses. I’m just a sucker for pattern on pattern, what can I say! See how gorgeous these shoes are with the first two looks (even better paired with the first one which has the wider striped dress?).

But a smaller leopard or cheetah print shoe will feel a little “cluttered” with black and white, especially if the print in the dress/outfit is a similar size to the shoeprint.

See image on the far right which isn’t quite right as the wrap dress is just too busy to go well with the also busy little polka dot animal print. One just doesn’t compliment the other and just looks a bit pale (this compared to what it would have looked with a bright green or shimmering silver mirror high heel!).

Shoe colors to avoid with black and white dresses

Now, some of you may be wondering if there’s a shoe color that doesn’t go well with black and white dresses. Because I’m sure you feel like I’ve mentioned them all at this point! Well, actually there are a few that aren’t my first choice.

Of course, taste & style is relative, but the following are definitely not on my top 10 list for black and white outfits! These include:

Dark purple shoes

Almost black navy blue shoes

Pastel shoes, especially very light ones – look similar but don’t quite go with white)

Gold shoes – it’s not disastrous, but the warmer tone doesn’t do black and white justice

Brown shoes – too similar to the black of the outfit to complement or contrast

Nude, off-white or beige shoes – makes a bold monochrome boring. See below:

Well, it’s not that these colors look TERRIBLE, but since they’re so dark (or light!)

Above all, you don’t want people to guess whether that beige shoe is white or not, or whether those navy blue pumps are a faded black that you want to pair with the outfit.

I mean, the shoe colors above don’t look bad, but they’ll just look a little “meh” if you know what I mean. After all, this is a shoe blog and we want to set an example with our shoes 😉

Denis Villeneuve is another modern master of the color palette. The film used multiple monochrome color schemes throughout its run, cycling through each color palette as the different chapters of the story progressed. Each section of the film is assigned a specific monochromatic color scheme to best represent the themes and perspectives of that particular section.

Color influences communication. What are monochromatic colors?

The Tate Art Museum defines monochrome as follows:

“Monochrome means one color, so in terms of art, a monochrome work of art is one that contains only one color.”

This makes perfect sense, especially when you break down the meaning of the word from its Greek roots:

Mono = “one”

Chrome= “color”

However, it is not as simple as “one color”. Designers will understand how many variants of a single color there are. Monochrome colors are all variants of a single hue – the tints, shades and tones. A monochromatic color scheme moves between lighter and darker versions of the base color or hue. Before we continue, let’s catch up on color theory.

Quick catch up on color theory

In case you need a refresher or are totally new to this stuff, let’s lay down some basics:

Hue – basically means “color”. If you dive into the definition, you’ll find all sorts of technical information about color theory, e.g. B. how hue is the dominant wavelength in a color. Painters understand “hue” to be the purest form of a pigment when it comes to color. So try to think of it like this – a pure color before it’s modified by shading, tinting and tone.

Tint – Makes a color lighter. Tints are created by adding white to a color.

Shadow – makes a color darker by adding black to it.

Tone – refers to the vibrancy of a color. They are modified by adding gray. A color with more gray is a duller tone than the original color, while one with less gray is a more saturated version of that color.

On the color wheel, each segment represents the color family of a single hue. There are subtle differences between each variation of the hue, all of which would make up a monochrome color palette.

When you use this scheme for design, each of your elements is a series of hues, shades, and tones based on a chosen base color. Because there are variations for each hue, you can get creative with a monochrome scheme from bright and bold to cool and muted, and express yourself in any way you can.

Tips and ideas for using a monochrome color scheme

Choosing your base color

So you’ve decided on a monochromatic color palette for your design. But oh my god, what shade do you use for the base color?

Keep in mind that the rest of your color palette will be a variation of the base color, so it’s important that the shade you choose is brand or fleek compliant, or simply conveys the right message (remember what we said about color). Psychology?).

That depends on your communication goals and the target group. If you’re just trying out a creative project for yourself or your personal brand, you can go straight to your favorite color and play with the different shades and tones of it.

Produce packaging that pops

Monochrome color schemes make for some truly inspirational packaging designs. This technique works particularly well when packaging products that come as a set. Each item can be distinguished by its own variation from the color palette as shown below.

Use it in the UI

You can use color as an innovative communication technique in UI design. Use variations of a color to show relationships or differentiate segments in a user interface. In the example shown below, variations of orange are used to communicate degrees of temperature. You can use color to cleverly communicate all sorts of things to create an easy and enjoyable user experience.

Use it for simplicity

A monochrome palette is the perfect solution for emphasizing the beauty of simplicity. It makes the design process itself easier, since you don’t have to combine different colors, and conveys simplicity to the eye. Even a bright and vibrant monochromatic scheme is easy, as there are no stark color deviations, and offers a sense of oneness that is inherently uncomplicated and effortless.

Create dynamic photos

It’s so much fun with monochromatic color photography and overlays.

A monochrome image will stand out in an editorial design, on a poster, or on social media. You can combine a monochrome color scheme with photography by intentionally photographing a monochrome scene or applying a toned overlay to a photo at the editing stage.

Try texture

By playing with textures or the illusion of texture, you can create an entire design in just one color with no variations and still have something totally dynamic. Think embossing. Think of patterns. Think in 3D. There are many ways to add interest to an image simply by applying texture to minimal color.

If you’re starting out shooting black and white images, or just considering it as the next step in your photography, you’ve probably come across three terms (grayscale vs black and white vs monochrome) and asked yourself, “What’s the difference?” ”

The quick answer is, “Not very much.” But let’s take a closer look at the different terms and their differences.

Black and white photography

Once upon a time there was only “movie”. It was all black and white; that was the only way. Google “old film box” and you’ll see that the box simply says “film” with no mention of color or black and white.

As color photography became more popular, there had to be a way to tell what type of film you bought. The term that was coined was, of course, a “black and white” film.

But that’s far from being very accurate.

If you think about it, a true black and white image would consist of only black and white colors. However, what we call a black and white photo is made up of black, white, and many different shades of gray.

What is grayscale photography?

“Grayscale” is a more technical and accurate term for the type of photography we call black and white. The technical definition of “grayscale” is an image composed entirely of shades of gray that vary from black to white.

You’ll find that photographers use the term black and white, while the design industry prefers the term grayscale.

The use of the term “grayscale” has increased since digital imaging took over from film photography.

What is monochrome photography?

The term “monochrome” derives from the medieval Latin word monochrōma. It consists of two words: “mono” and “chrōma”, which means exactly “single color”.

If we were to define monochrome photography, we would define it as an image composed solely of shades of one color, varying from the lightest to the darkest hues.

The best example of a monochrome image is a sepia photograph, which has its roots in film photography.

Grayscale vs Black & White

Essentially, “grayscale” and “black and white” mean exactly the same thing when it comes to photography. However, grayscale is a much more accurate term. A true black and white image would simply consist of two colors – black and white. Grayscale images are created from black, white, and the entire grayscale.

All grayscale or black and white images are monochrome because they are made up of different shades of just one color – black. However, not all monochrome images are grayscale, since monochromatic images can be created in any color.

An image made entirely of yellow tones would still be considered a monochrome image.

What’s the best way to create grayscale, black and white, or monochrome photos?

In modern digital photography there are two basic ways to create greyscale or monochrome photos.

01. Creating black and white images in camera

You’ve probably spent some time looking at your camera’s instruction manual, and depending on the brand of camera you own, you’ve probably noticed that it has black and white, monochrome, or film simulation modes. By enabling one of these modes, you instruct your camera to produce black and white or monochrome images at the time of capture.

First of all, the way the camera works is to capture the image in color. Next, it runs the image through the camera’s internal processor and converts it to black and white. Finally, it saves the captured photo as a JPEG image.

The benefit of this black and white photography approach is that you instantly have a black and white photo and no further conversions are required.

The disadvantage of in-camera black and white shooting is that the camera discards all color information during the conversion and converts the uncompressed RAW file to a highly compressed JPEG format. If you are not happy with the final photo, you cannot convert it back to a color version. Also, the latitude in which you can edit the JPEG photo is very limited.

02. Creating black and white images in post-processing

The second approach to black and white photography is to shoot in color in an uncompressed RAW format and convert the color image to black and white in a photo editing application such as Lightroom or Photoshop.

The advantage of this method is that it preserves all possible data that the camera sensor collects from the scene, giving you more freedom in the editing process. You can create color and black and white versions of the same photo and create an unlimited number of black and white and black and white variations.

The downside is that it requires an extra step to create the black and white image and you need to learn how to edit the photo.

Personally, I always shoot in color in RAW format and later decide what treatment I want to apply to my photos. I rely heavily on Lightroom presets to speed up black and white conversion. I have my own collection for landscape photography and presets for environmental portraits.

The hybrid recording method for black and white

As I mentioned earlier, there are two main ways to create black and white photos. I often use a combination of both approaches as advances in mirrorless camera technology have made this hybrid approach possible.

My main camera is a mirrorless Fujifilm X-T2 and I always shoot in color in RAW format. But I still have the ability to apply black and white film simulations to my shots. This switches my electronic viewfinder to monochrome mode, allowing me to preview the scene in black and white to better appreciate the scene’s potential for black and white photography.

When I press the shutter button, the camera captures the color RAW image, but at the same time creates a black and white preview and embeds it in the RAW file.

With this approach I have the best of both worlds.

There are some photographers who ONLY create black and white images in the camera and see in it the purest form of photography. I can certainly understand this point of view.

But if you are at the beginning of your photographic journey and just working your way through the different terms, meanings, whys and wherefores, I advise you not to panic. Get out there and take photos as much and as often as you can. Later you can decide whether it should be a color or a black and white picture.

What is monochrome style?

Monochrome styling simply means wearing an outfit that is a single shade. A monochromatic outfit can have multiple pieces, separates, layers, textures and slight color variations, but overall the look is one color intended. Effortless yet elegant, these outfits work well for people who like to wear a specific shade or even just jeans and matching patterns.

Why wear monochrome?

On the one hand, the visual appeal of a colorful outfit has an effect. But putting together pieces of clothing in the same shade also makes getting dressed quick and easy. Also, monochromatic styles feature monochromatic items by definition, making each piece a great candidate for mixing and matching with other items in your wardrobe. Our choice of color in art and design is an important component in the process and end result.

What are monochromatic colors?

The Tate Art Museum defines monochrome as follows:

“Monochrome means one color, so in terms of art, a monochrome work of art is one that contains only one color.”

This makes perfect sense, especially when you break down the meaning of the word from its Greek roots:

Mono = “one”

Chrome= “color”

However, it is not as simple as “one color”. Designers will understand how many variants of a single color there are. Monochrome colors are all variants of a single hue – the tints, shades and tones. A monochromatic color scheme moves between lighter and darker versions of the base color or hue. Before we continue, let’s catch up on color theory.

Quick catch up on color theory

In case you need a refresher or are totally new to this stuff, let’s lay down some basics:

Hue – basically means “color”. If you dive into the definition, you’ll find all sorts of technical information about color theory, e.g. B. how hue is the dominant wavelength in a color. Painters understand “hue” to be the purest form of a pigment when it comes to color. So try to think of it like this – a pure color before it’s modified by shading, tinting and tone.

Tint – Makes a color lighter. Tints are created by adding white to a color.

Shadow – makes a color darker by adding black to it.

Tone – refers to the vibrancy of a color. They are modified by adding gray. A color with more gray is a duller tone than the original color, while one with less gray is a more saturated version of that color.

On the color wheel, each segment represents the color family of a single hue. There are subtle differences between each variation of the hue, all of which would make up a monochrome color palette.
