Also, try putting your hand in her tank and leaving it there for about ten minutes, and then start moving your hand closer to your Beardie each day: This will show your Beardie that your hand is cold and not out for it is to kill him. Finally, try leaving a worn shirt at its favorite sleeping spot! After you can pick it up, make sure you hold it in a way that makes it feel secure and not like you’re going to drop it. My Beardie freaks out when I don’t support all of her legs, chest and tail. (Which is quite a handful – she’s about 19 inches now!) Probably the most important part of getting used to my bear was allowing her to roam around in a bear-proof room while I sat on the floor with my laptop. Anyway, I got my first bearded dragon about a week and a half ago and Sunday was his first bath time. When I tried to put him in the bathtub (a 10 gallon aquarium, warm water no higher than his ankles) he freaked out and tried to climb out. Now when he sees me, he puffs out his beard and turns black. Any suggestions on how I can make it so he doesn’t find me so averse?
He is about 5 years old and I am his second owner.

Welcome to the forum and to Beardies!! I want you to know that we have put together a lot of information which you will find in the links under some of our comments. Food, heat, UVB, supplements and more… I’m sure you will.. we call it moving stress.. how does his tank look? I just need to give him some time to settle into his new home with you. Do you have enough hiding spots, places for him to explore, have you tried covering 3 sides of the tank to make him feel safe? Do you know how he was with the previous owner? Could it be that it hasn’t been handled much? You have to go slow and earn his trust. Make sure you walk slowly with him if you try to get close to him. Talk to him, make sure when you pick him up it’s in front of him. He needs to know you’re good. Typically the puffy beard and black beard are just for show as we are giants to them.
