This means the part cannot be returned and you must pay for the part in full when ordering. Unlike most Toyota parts, the instrument cluster takes about a week to arrive. When the new odometer arrives we install it and then calibrate the inclinometer. This is possible in a single day. Currently, the total cost to replace the Prius combination meter with a new part is $954, but it will continue to rise as parts and labor prices increase, so request an updated price before counting any chickens.

Refuel quickly when it turns on. Door Ajar Warning Light This light comes on when either door is not properly closed. Do not drive while the warning light is on. Check that all doors are closed.

What the Toyota Prius traction battery does

The traction battery that we find on the Prius, like any battery, is an energy store. It contains energy that can be used when needed. This energy is used to power a motor-generator in the transmission, which either starts the petrol engine, propels the vehicle at low speeds, or helps with rapid acceleration.

The battery provides an additional boost of energy that helps compensate for the lack of power from the petrol engine. This means the gas engine is smaller and uses less fuel, making it great for economy. The traction battery also stores energy recovered from the vehicle when it’s coasting or in regenerative braking mode, which we can then use to propel the car forward.

Between these two examples, we can see that the battery plays an important role in helping the vehicle drive and accelerate like a normal vehicle would.

What happens if the battery fails

Should you encounter a P0A80 and the hybrid battery dies, your Prius will actually still run, just more often. The car still drives but with a lack of power as we don’t have the available energy from the battery that we need. Starting and stopping the car will also not be smooth.

The expanded recall is marked 20V-369 with the NHTSA. All owners will be notified by August 10th and instructed to take their Prius to a dealership for a free software update. The 2004-2009 Prius has a common problem that can make it impossible to turn off the car in the normal way. Here’s how to turn off your Prius if this happens to you.

Here’s how to fix it

The solution is to repair or replace the combination meter. The combination meter stores the odometer data, so the current odometer reading must be programmed into the new unit. It also houses the inclinometer, which is required for accurate fuel level calculations due to the Prius’ fuel tank bladder.

New combination meter

If you want a new combination meter, the process is as follows. First, we require a full deposit for the part prior to ordering. Once ordered, it is non-returnable as your mileage is written on the part. Often the symptoms are intermittent and sometimes people change their minds when the car is working again and it is a lot of work for us to sell a wagon meter with incorrect mileage. It takes about a week to get the part. Once the part arrives, we can schedule an appointment and repair your Prius in a single day.

The dashboard must be removed and disassembled to replace the instrument cluster. The ventilation panel parts sometimes break. Old plastic that has been baked in the sun for at least 10 years is brittle. We’re very good at pulling and prying in just the right places and with just the right amount of force, but sometimes our best efforts aren’t enough and a vent breaks.

Once the new gauge is installed, we calibrate the tilt sensor so your fuel gauge stays accurate or can be as accurate as the Prius fuel gauge.
