In this day and age, when there is a wide range of different colors, shades, and nail art designs to incorporate into your manicure and pedicure, opting for nails that match seems like an outdated option. It should be noted that there is nothing wrong with opting for a mani pedi regimen. This could be done by applying similar nail polish colors to fingers and toes. What nail polish goes with everything?

White Nails

If you don’t know how to wear white nail polish, don’t fret, it’s actually the easiest color to pair. White nails truly go with everything and make any color pop.

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

If you have to have different outfits for work every day, then knowing what nail polish color goes with everything is a big help. No need to squeeze in a rushed manicure to make any outfit look complete.

Here we are going to take a closer look at nail polish colors that are suitable for an everyday look and still make you look and feel good. You don’t necessarily want it to match your outfit, but rather what you’re wearing.

With this guide, you don’t have to worry about finding something suitable every day. That’s great because let’s face it, we can all worry about one less thing.

What nail polish color goes with everything?

A good manicure allows us to have perfect nails within two to four weeks, so choosing a color that lasts that long is crucial. Let’s take a look at the colors you could use.

olive green

Wear Wild Willow anytime, anywhere, with anything. This shade of green is neutral but is at its prettiest in fall. The color is harmonious and it is said that people who wear this color are naturally gentle, balanced and strong-willed.

Although it goes with everything, the color looks particularly good with black leather. It adds a sense of sophistication to the look. It’s also very pretty with white, your nails will pop against the white and draw attention to your perfect manicure.

This earthy, adventurous and powerful color works well outdoors or indoors, on the mountain or in an upscale restaurant. We love this color with blue, yellow, white, black and/or nude. It’s also a great color for a background color when doing floral or leaf-themed nail art.

gray nails

The different shades of gray suit your wardrobe all year round. Lighter shades like Mirror Mirror Max nail polish are perfect for spring and summer. It goes beautifully with a white dress or suit.

Our favorite summer colors for gray are white, green, red, yellow, orange and pink. These colors look really great together.

The darker shades like Mansion Lane Nail Polish are great for the colder months. Moody yet sophisticated, these shades of gray pair well with leather and denim.

It also complements beautifully silver jewelry. And in combination it looks modern yet quirky but also adds that touch of elegance to your look. It’s just an overall versatile shade that works well for any occasion.

Beige or bare nails

Nude or beige tones are incredibly versatile and we like them because they not only work every day, but are also great for special occasions. Nudes are classy and add a sense of elegance to any occasion.

However, you get different nude shades and the shade you choose depends on your skin tone. Medium and darker complexions usually go well with any shade of nude, but it is preferable to go for a lighter shade so you don’t end up with mannequin nails.

For this skin type, opt for colors like our Mind, Body, Spirit or our Sheer Nude. The lighter skin types should opt for the darker nude shades like our Roam With Me and Trailblazer.

You need to find the perfect beige or nude that suits your skin tone. So paint a nail or two as you go through the different shades.

This classy hue pairs beautifully with gold jewelry and these hues go with any outfit and any time of the year. You can go from casual to formal effortlessly instead of wasting time worrying about how to match nail polish to match your attire.

white nails

If you don’t know how to wear white nail polish, fret not, it’s actually the easiest color to mix and match. White nails really go with everything and make any color pop. If you’re silently wondering “does white nail polish look good?” the answer is yes.

In summer, it can be wonderfully combined with pastel shades or light-colored clothing in your wardrobe. And in winter it goes beautifully with the darker colors. White nail polish goes with everything from jeans to work clothes and leather to formal dresses and even a beach look.

There isn’t an outfit that white nail polish doesn’t go with. It is also a perfect color for short nails, giving them a youthful fresh look.

However, be careful when working with food and spices. You should stay away from turmeric or anything else that you think might stain your white polish. Because if they get stained, it is difficult to remove the stains and you may have to redo the entire manicure.

pink nails

Also known as blush nails, pink nails closely resemble your natural nail color. It’s great if you want your nails to look almost bare but polished. You just have to find the perfect shade of pink for you.

Pink nails are modern and chic and your nails look on point yet barely there. When it comes to your skin tone, there is no need to worry either, blush suits all skin tones. You might find that a few shades of this bright pink work for your skin tone.

It works especially well on sun-kissed skin. Deciding what to wear with blush nails is easy because everything goes with this color. Unlike the darker shades where the colors don’t match as easily. For dark shades, for example, you need to know how to wear black nail polish.

It is also very popular for weddings. Try Lift The Veil Max nail polish, whether you’re the bride or a guest, this color is ideal for the occasion. Ethereal Plane Nail Polish is another example of a blush shade. It’s soft and neutral with a soft shimmer and a little bit of opalescence.

Red nail polish

Red is stylish, bold and vibrant. It works because it’s iconic and exudes femininity. This classic nail polish color goes with everything and is etched in our memories as famous stars have sported the color through centuries of filmmaking.

With their confidence and elegance, Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth helped popularize red lacquer in the 1950s. Marlene Dietrich took on the lead role in the 1937 romantic comedy Angel and she wore a rose-pink polish.

’50s star Lucille Ball took part in I Love Lucy and often paired her blonde hair with bright red lips and nails. Faye Dunaway in neo-noir Chinatown, who paired her hats with a glossy red manicure.

Barbara Streisand played Fanny Brice in Funny Lady and Olivia Newton-John played Sandy, Newton-John’s innocent character in Grease with scarlet nails and lipstick. Joan Collins in Dynasty and the list goes on and on.

The color is a classic for a reason and can be worn with anything, through the years and decades. The color is timeless.

Navy blue nails

Don’t be shocked that we’ve included navy blue in this list. It can look very chic and goes well with any color. It’s stylish and modern and will go with your evening dress, jeans and just about anything.

When you think about it, navy sits somewhere between black and denim blue, both of which colors are extremely versatile. Easy to wear, it looks stunning on fair skin and is flattering on darker skin. It is also one of the colors associated with royalty.

Royal Navy nail polish is a great shade of blue. It gleams with a not-so-obvious sheen that makes it fun in the sun. Navy is a great color to pair with white and nude. Doesn’t go well with black unless it’s patterned.

Her navy blue nails will elevate any outfit and make you feel, well, posh. And just like grey, navy pairs beautifully with silver jewellery.

chocolate brown

Brown may not be popular in your closet, but that’s okay, it doesn’t have to be. Brown nail polish just needs to complement what you are wearing. The right brown nail polish can certainly go with everything.

Brown nails can go with casual wear, and they can easily go with formal wear. It’s another great color for fall. Match it with wardrobes that contain shades of pink, yellow, cream, orange, gold and even green.

It is a warm color that goes so well with any clothing color and skin tone. And great for fall and winter. Orange is just as great for fall, read What Color Nail Polish With An Orange Dress for some ideas on how to jazz up your orange with a gorgeous manicure.

ivory

Soft and subtle, Ivory is a beautiful color nail polish for redheads. It’s a neutral color that goes with everything from creams to greys, browns, navy, greens and deep reds. The color is romantic and is stunning with gold jewelry and another beautiful color for weddings.

The off-white color has a slight hint of yellow which makes it not as harsh as white. It’s also great against bright clothing. People who choose this color are usually gentle, enjoy nature and choose the simplicity of life.

Conclusion

Any of the above colors is a good choice if you’re worried about which nail polish will go with the shoe colors you have in your wardrobe. Changing nail polish frequently takes up your free time and increases your budget.

So the simplest solution is to pick nail colors that go with everything. Whether you prefer gel, acrylic or traditional nail polish, our color guide to polish that goes with everything will leave you less stressed and with more time and money in your pocket.

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

I don’t know about you, but I never get nail fatigue. As much as I love shopping for new makeup, changing my skincare routine, or trying something different with my hair, my nail M.O. reigns supreme. Painting my nails has become my happy place, and while I absolutely love the boost a shiny new color gives to my mood and confidence, the actual process of painting my nails — or even going to the salon — is one of mine Favorite ways to unwind and turn the world off for a second. You know what I mean?

I don’t usually shop for trends when it comes to my manicures (I paint my nails any shade I the fuck please, thanks a lot), but that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in finding out what nail colors are going to be 2022 more than others pop. What do white nails mean on a girl?

Basically, white nails mean you’re single. As you probably already know, the colour can symbolise cleanliness, freshness or a blank slate. But according to Urban Dictionary, white nails mean someone is “ready to move on to have a fresh start”. In contrast, light or baby blue nails signifies that you’re taken.

What does white nail polish mean on TikTok? The viral trend explained

By Jazmin Duribe

White nail polish is cute for summer but has a whole different meaning on TikTok. Here’s what it actually means…

Some things — like painting your nails a certain color — seem perfectly normal and innocent in the real world, but it’s a whole different story on TikTok. People on TikTok are actually using their nail polish colors to send a specific message about their relationship status in another TikTok viral trend.

The platform is rife with videos of people proudly showing off their white pedicures and manicures. This ties in with the popular “light blue nails” trend we saw earlier this year that became a viral challenge.

In the comments section you will find users absolutely amazed at what white nail polish actually means. Here’s an explanation of the meaning behind the viral trend.

Basically white nails means you are single. As you probably already know, the color can symbolize cleanliness, freshness or a clean slate. But according to Urban Dictionary, white nails mean someone is “ready to move on to have a fresh start.”

In contrast, light or baby blue nails mean you’re taken. There is also a theory that when girls ask their boyfriend what color they should get their nails, they will always say “light blue” or “baby blue”.

The trend is believed to have started in 2020 when @_urdadsgirlfriend posted a video with the caption: “Why every time you ask a boy what color you want your nails he says ‘light blue’. However, it is not entirely known how white nails were attributed to being single and who started it.

Now people on TikTok are sharing their white fingernails to announce they’re single and ready to socialize.

Are white nails tacky?

Super long, white nails

However, white is a tricky color to work with, and can very easily look tacky or trashy. I like them best on shorter nails, in the summertime, because they compliment a tan very nicely.

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

It seems like almost everyone is talking about nails these days. Or maybe it’s just because I always talk about nails. Anyway, I just started my new job as a nail designer last week and it’s already obvious that this industry is full of talented and creative professionals. It’s amazing how much time and artistic skill can go into a person’s manicure.

If I had to guess, I’d say I LOVE about 98 percent of the nail photos I’ve seen, and I’ve spent a lot of time looking at photos of nails. It’s hard to miss when nails are all over the internet, runways and fashion magazines. It really hurts me to do this, but there are a few nail trends that I can’t get behind. If you’ve ever spent time browsing the web for nail art, you’ve surely seen some photos on Instagram or Pinterest that made you go “…huh?” or “How do you go to the bathroom with that?”

Here’s a list of five nail trends that I’m not sure I fully understand.

1. Super long white nails

I’m not saying I don’t like white nail polish. I often use white as a base for my own manicures because it’s so easy to layer designs on top. However, white is a tricky color to work with and can very easily look tacky or trashy. I like them best on shorter nails in the summer because they complement a tan very well. In my opinion, long, white acrylic nails just look way too intense, as if they were painted with white-out. So Miley, big “Bangerz” fan, but when I see those white nails in another video, I might lose my mind.

2. Duck Feet Nails

I can’t believe that’s a thing. Duck nails are artificial nails with an extreme shape. They flare out at the tip, forming a wider exposed edge than the nail itself. While I was in beauty school, I watched my teacher put a set of duck nails on another nail student. She made them shorter, more of an “active length.” It made them look a lot better, but still not a good nail shape for me personally. The really long duck nails look like their only function is to scoop guacamole into your mouth.

3. Absolutely outrageous 3D nail art

I’m all about expressing yourself artistically, using whatever medium you want (isn’t art awesome?!). 3D nail art is awesome and I’ve been working on improving my 3D beautification game. But some of the nails you see at nail art contests can get pretty crazy. Sometimes they don’t even look like nails! Yes, it’s creative, but I still can’t help but wonder what it would be like to try and remove my contacts with these. *shudders*

4. Texture Nail Polish

Sandy looking nail polish is another trend I can’t follow. I bought a bottle of Milani Texture a while ago and have only used it once. I was a little confused, how should I use top coat? My nails looked dull but felt gritty and bumpy. It was weird. Several nail polish companies have created their own collections, such as Zoya’s Pixiedust or OPI’s Liquid Sand. I like the look more when it’s a more neutral polish color or used as a design accent, but definitely not for a full manicure.

5. Caviar manicure

I got a Ciate Caviar Nail Set from my roommate for Christmas last year and I’ve only used it once. They were really cool to look at and photograph, but once I started using my hands these little beads came EVERYWHERE. They all lay in my bed and between the keys of my laptop and slowly but surely they all fell off. I think they look good in moderation, but they’re just not practical for a full manicure.

Clear

For men who are just starting to wear nail polish but are still a little apprehensive, clear nail polish is a great choice.

Clear nail polish still makes you feel like you’re wearing nail polish and adds that extra sparkle without taking you out of your comfort zone when you’re not ready.

Black

Black is a very popular color choice for men, and it’s often asked “why do men wear black nail polish?” and “what does black nail polish mean?”.

There are many reasons why men wear black nail polish. It’s often done to stand behind a social cause, as a fashion statement, or because it’s a masculine color.

Black is also popular with men who are new members of the LGBTQ community.

Deep red is a very popular choice for men. It’s bold and makes a statement, but it’s not too shocking.

Blue

Blue is another popular choice. Blue is considered a “boy color” in society, which may be why some men are naturally inclined to it. But royal blue seems to suit boys very well and is a popular color choice.

Light yellow

This may come as a surprise, but light yellow is also a popular choice among men. It’s a bold color but not overdone. It’s also a happy and warm color, so people with this personality tend to be attracted to it.

White

White is a gender-neutral color, which may be why it’s a popular choice. It also suits almost all skin types and goes with every outfit, so it’s a very safe choice.

How do I match my nails to my clothes?

The best way to match your nail polish to your outfit, is to color block. There are colors such as blue and yellow, red and green, etc. that have huge contrast, but when paired together they actually look fabulous.

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

How to choose your nail polish to match your outfit

Have you ever thought about choosing your nail polish based on your outfit? Now I don’t want to tell you to go matchy matchy like in green nails and green top. However, I will tell you how to choose nail polish colors that go well with most if not all of your outfits in one way or another. So whatever the color of your outfit, there is a way to choose your nail polish afterwards.

1. Don’t be afraid to color with your nail polish.

The best way to match your nail polish to your outfit is with a color block. There are colors like blue and yellow, red and green etc that have tremendous contrast but when combined together they actually look fabulous.

2. Is your clothing plain or printed?

Choosing your nail polish according to your outfit depends a lot on the style of your clothes. If most of your clothes are printed, stay away from colorful nail art. In fact, decide on a shade and make sure that it matches your outfit and does not contrast with it. However, if you are more of a simple girl, feel free to experiment with your nails.

3. Match your nail polish to your accessories.

A good way to ensure that your nail polish matches your outfit is to make sure it matches your accessories. For example, if you wear a gold statement necklace, feel free to go for a gold nail polish. You can also try matching your nails with the color of your bag to create a balance between your outfit and your nail polish.

4. The basic nail polish colors.

In those cases where you are not sure how to match your nail polish with your outfit, always stick with the simple and practical nail polishes. For example, nude, light pink, French manicure, etc. These basic nail polish colors will go with any outfit you wear.

What nail colors make hands look younger?

Color Code

“For younger-looking hands, orange or peach-based hues work best,” says Colette Keenan, butter LONDON national field manager, adding that shades with orange undertones, such as reds or corals, draw attention away from any signs of aging.

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

Studies have shown that women who wear nail polish appear younger than they actually are. But before you grab that first bottle of nail polish you see, here’s what you should know: some shades can draw attention to signs of aging on your hands; others can have the opposite effect, making your hands look younger in seconds.

You might think that delicate hues like nude or pure pink would suffice, but as it turns out, because natural hues closely match your skin’s tone, they just make the eyes jump right over your nails and accentuate your hands’ problem areas (think: veins, wrinkles and uneven tone) instead. However, if you want to draw attention to your nails and not your hands, think the exact opposite.

“For younger-looking hands, orange or peach-based shades work best,” says Colette Keenan, Butter LONDON’s National Field Manager, adding that shades with orange undertones, like red or coral, draw attention away from any signs of aging . “A youthful, vibrant and uplifting color, orange helps divert attention from signs of aging hands like age spots, veins and wrinkles,” says celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann. Additionally, Keenan adds that the nail polish’s orange undertones also help bring out your skin’s natural glow.

SPF solution

To keep your hands looking youthful without polish, essie manicurist Michelle Saunders says it’s always a good idea to apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands. “You put sunscreen on your face every day for sun protection and wrinkle reduction. You should do the same for your hands.” Lippmann agrees, adding that because our hands are constantly exposed to sunlight, they’re one of the first places sun-related damage occurs. Your number one solution? Opt for a hand cream that is also fortified with SPF. “Deborah Lippmann’s Rich Girl Hand Cream with SPF 25 ($28) is my favorite.”

shapeshifting

While many of us don’t think about the shape of our nails, Lippmann says maybe we should start. “An oval nail makes fingers look longer and in turn makes hands look younger,” she explains. Another care tip from the pros: Pay attention to your cuticles! “Be sure to keep your fingers groomed,” she says. “Clean and well-groomed nails – with or without nail polish – make hands look younger.”

Protect and Serve

For younger-looking hands, Lippmann recommends using gloves. “Always wear gloves when you do any work with your hands—washing dishes, cleaning, etc.—so your hands don’t get dry and damaged, which leads to premature aging of your hands over time.” Another tip: clean yours Hands like your face, says the expert. “Exfoliate hands at least twice a week to remove dead skin. This not only keeps hands smooth and soft, but also fresh and radiant, making them look younger. After exfoliating, remember to moisturize.”

Tips and advice on choosing the right paint color

One of the questions I’m always asked is “how do you match your nails with your dress?”

It’s something a lot of people struggle with.

So, in this section, we’ll go over a few things to think about.

When you’re done reading, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to make great color choices.

Here’s the first question to ask yourself.

What do you like and what suits your style?

The LBD can be difficult to style.

When thinking about what nail polish color to pair with a black dress, there are so many fashionable avenues you can take!

You can spice it up, dress it down, go grungy and quirky, or go elegant and timeless.

The choice of paint color should reflect your personal taste.

You should also consider what suits you and your preferred style.

Do you want a vintage look or an artistic vibe?

Then you can look at soft brown tones, warm yellow tones, peaches, lavender or light green tones.

Do you like it casual, minimalist or boho?

Then white, grey, blush or pink-pink could do the trick.

Want something bold, attention-grabbing, or a little bit sexy?

Then cobalt blue, canary yellow, or cherry red polishes could be great options for you.

Don’t buy enamel paint just because it matches your dress.

Pick a color you love and you’ll smile every time you look at your nails!

What season is it?

Sometimes the answer to the question of what nail polish color goes with a black dress can be seasonal.

If you think about the season, you can find the perfect nail color.

You may instinctively know that some colors are seasonal.

I’ll give you a few examples:

Spring colors – pastel, coral, lemon yellow, sky and baby blue.

Summer colors – bright shades of orange, yellow, lime and fuschia.

Autumn – earthy greens, browns, oranges and mustard yellows.

Winter colors – cool blue, white, silver, gold and berry red.

Nail polish brands always have seasonal collections.

These collections can be a great source of inspiration.

If you wear your dress in the fall, it makes sense to choose a color from a fall collection.

It will work for the season and is also a great way to stay on trend.

What is the occasion?

The next question you can ask yourself is “What is the occasion?”

Where you’re going and what you’re going to do can help you narrow down your color choices.

Is it a special occasion or a formal event in the evening?

If so, you could rule out pastels and neutrals.

Why?

Because these colors may be more suitable for daytime or outdoor activities.

For a formal event, a metallic paint (any color) will work well.

A bold shade or a jewel tone or even a classic red or navy polish is also appropriate for a formal event.

The type of event could also play a role.

Is it a celebration or something serious?

The color you choose for a wedding party can be very different than what you would wear to a funeral or job interview.

I’m just giving you suggestions here.

There are no rules.

Wear a pastel to a formal event and a metallic to lunch if that’s what your heart desires!

I’m just trying to give you something to think about so you can narrow it down.

Another example:

What nail polish color goes with a black dress for a date?

Let’s say you have a date.

You can choose a blush or pink polish.

Why?

Because both colors are feminine and romantic.

Whatever the occasion, it’s a good idea to think about the mood you want to create.

A note on skin tone

Your skin’s undertones can complement or clash with certain colors.

Do you want the best possible nail polish colors for you?

Look for colors that match your skin’s undertones.

Do you have cool undertones?

That’s when cool nail polish colors or those with cool undertones are most flattering.

And if you’re a warm-toned beauty, look for warm-toned polishes.

Not sure what the heck I’m talking about?

Read this post on how to match nail polish colors to your skin tone.

Now let’s see what nail polish colors go well with a black dress.

We start with neutrals.

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? – neutrals.

I wear a lot of neutral nail polish colors.

When it comes time to choose a polish, you can’t go wrong with neutral colors.

They go with everything and suit every occasion.

I love neutral colors so much I wrote a post about them.

Listen. It’s called 14 nail polish colors to go with any outfit.

1 or 2 of the colors might surprise you!

Black is a neutral color so you can wear it with any other neutral nail polish color.

However, depending on your skin tone and the look you want, some neutrals may work better for you.

Here are the best neutral nail polish colors to pair with your black dress.

White

White nails are currently in trend.

It’s a clean and simple look that means you’re ready for a fresh start.

On TikTok, they can also mean you’re single, so be aware!

White nail polish is a great choice with a black dress.

A bright, crisp, pure white like OPI’s Alpine Snow gives you a high-contrast look.

White nails will look amazing and chic with your black dress.

They’re also super easy to pair with everything in your closet – bonus!

marine

Navy nails are my go-to for formal events.

Or whenever I’m feeling posh!

I love how navy and black look together – it’s elegant but unexpected.

Navy nails are crazy versatile.

They can give you a moody, dark feel appropriate for a funeral.

Or they can elevate an outfit to fashionista status.

Put on a pair of blue jeans the day after you wear your black dress.

You’ll look casual and totally pulled together – love it!

beige

For a sophisticated look that is timelessly elegant, choose beige.

A beige nail polish with your black dress says, “I didn’t try too hard and I still look fabulous!”

The creaminess of beige can soften the intensity of black.

It is a good choice if you want to wear tan or brown shoes or accessories.

taupe

Taupe and black look ultra-chic and modern together.

Is your dress more soot black and less pitch black?

Then the nail polish taupe looks particularly good!

For a relaxed, casual vibe, taupe nail polish is the perfect choice.

Gray

Try an ice cold gray for a sophisticated, cool look.

When wearing black, it’s best to stick to medium and light gray tones.

Light, cool shades of gray pair perfectly with a black dress for a modern, minimalist look.

You should avoid darker gray tones as they don’t provide enough contrast.

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? Cool Colors.

If your skin has cool undertones, the Polish colors in this section will be the most flattering for you.

You can wear these nail colors even if you have neutral skin.

Green

There are a few shades of green that look amazing with a black dress.

As a cool-skinned beauty, I adore emerald green!

Emerald green gives you a luxurious feel that is chic and sophisticated.

Try an emerald polish on your black dress and wait for the compliments.

OPI makes a great emerald green polish. It’s called Suzi-san Climbs Fuji-san.

Or you could try Zoya’s Giovanna.

Sage is another shade of green that pairs well with black.

Black and sage are great when you want something more casual.

I love Essie’s Say You Love Me.

Forest green is another rich shade of green that pairs well with a black dress and makes a bold statement.

Blue green

Teal is a cool teal shade that looks fabulous with a black dress.

It’s a versatile color that suits every season.

Teal works for any occasion. But it’s a particularly good color for job interviews.

This is because teal conveys clarity of thought and calm.

I like OPIs Is That a Spear in your Pocket?

And Essie’s Garden Variety.

violet

Do you want a look full of sensuality, elegance and luxury?

Then a purple polish could be just the thing for you.

Deep, rich shades of purple, such as plum, complement a black dress beautifully.

What does Deep Purple say about you?

Deep purple is a mysterious, ambitious and powerful color.

It symbolizes dignity and independence.

Zoya’s Chiara and Juno shades are stunning.

Kimono-over is nice too (by Essie).

Blue

With a black dress, you can wear most blue polishes.

For an unexpected, eclectic and relaxed vibe, try a navy blue polish like Essie’s No More Film.

But if you want to make a statement, opt for a rich jewel hue like cobalt blue.

If you’re looking for a bold blue that suits all skin tones, I’d recommend Zoya’s Tallulah.

The bold color and subtle metallic finish make a big impression.

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? Warm tones.

You don’t have to have a warm skin tone to wear these colors.

But if you do, they will complement your undertones.

Yellow

For a pop of color that breathes life into a little black dress, opt for yellow nail polish.

Yellow is the perfect choice for spring and summer.

Think bright, bold shades with lots of personality.

Stay away from pastels or mustard yellows, though—they can clash a bit with black.

Anything expressive will help spice up your outfit.

You could opt for a green and yellow like Cote’s No 59 in Charteruse.

Or a lemon yellow shade like Zoya’s Daisy.

For maximum impact and big cool dots – try OPI’s No Faux Yellow.

It is an amazing light yellow shade that won the 2021 Glamor Beauty Award.

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? earth tones.

Earthy colors go well with black.

We’ve already talked about navy and sage green.

Both nail colors give you an earthy, toned-down look.

If you want relaxed vibes, pair your black dress with either sage or navy.

If you want stylish and sophisticated (but still earthy) – then try olive green.

Shades of brown and terracotta can also work well.

Check out CND’s Clay Canyon or Zoya’s Dea.

Bold Polish colors that go well with a black dress

Want all eyes on your nails?

If so, this is the section for you.

Let’s take a look at some bold and beautiful polish options.

For maximum impact with your black dress.

yellow and green

Bold yellows like canary yellow will make your nails pop.

The brighter the better!

Look for shades with Lemon or Sunshine in the name.

But stay away from washed-out pastels and mustard.

I love OPI’s award-winning No Faux Yellow.

Lime green or other strong shades of green such as chartreuse also attract attention.

If super bright greens are your thing, try Zoya’s link.

It’s a flashy neon green that screams “Look at me!”

With a black dress you will not get more intense than with bright red-orange nails.

Think bold, energetic reds with lots of orange punch and bright coral tones.

Zoya’s Virginia and Rocha are amazing shades to try.

Luminous purple

Why not add a bold punch to your black dress with a vibrant purple?

Light purple is a creative and unexpected way to bring this black dress to life!

Banks by Zoya is a new release I’ve just fallen in love with.

It’s a powerful purple neon that’s so cool!

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? metallic polishes.

Great news!

Copper, silver, gold and rose gold all go well with a black dress.

That means wearing any of these colors when it comes to nails or accessories.

You can even mix and match your nails with your favorite piece of jewelry if you like!

Of course, you can also wear any nail polish color with a metallic finish.

For example a shimmering green, purple or blue.

If you like rose gold, try Zoya’s Esme or Essie’s Penny Talk – both gorgeous!

My favorite silver is Silver on Ice from OPI.

I don’t wear gold nail polish, but Soleil by Zoya looks good.

It’s an antique gold that’s great for warm skin tones.

What nail polish color goes with a black dress? Other polish colors going.

Are you still looking for your perfect partner?

Here are a few more ideas for some other polish colors that go well with a black dress.

Pink

I love the elegant combination of blush pink with black.

Blushing nails will soften the black in your dress.

Gives you a feminine look that is delicate and romantic.

I love Zoya’s Joss and China Glaze’s Don’t Make Me Blush.

Brown

Some people hate black and brown together.

Others can’t get enough!

If brown nails are your thing right now, my advice for staying on trend would be to keep it light.

Anything from a medium brown to a light tan will work.

Any darker and you won’t see the contrast with the black.

Dusty Rose

A beautiful dusty shade of rose will look dreamy and classy with a black dress.

If you appeal to timeless elegance and romance, then get a Dusty Rose nail polish.

Nails Inc in the Uptown color is good. Such is Dior’s Incognito.

Prom nails for a black dress

If you’re going to wear black to prom, this section is for you!

Prom is a formal event, but it can also be an opportunity to show off your creativity and personality.

I guess you’ve already chosen your dress, haven’t you?

Then let the dress guide you in your choice of nail color.

What do I mean?

Well, let’s break it down.

Here are some things to think about.

Tips for choosing prom nails to match a black dress

First, take a few seconds to think about how you would describe your prom dress.

Is it classically elegant? fun and flirty? Minimalist and modern? Or whimsical and different?

When choosing a nail color for prom, you may want to try to match it with the overall look of the dress.

For example, if you are wearing an elegant, stylish, and very formal dress, you want a nail color that matches that mood.

Some great options for a more traditional, formal black dress would be red, emerald, forest green, ivory, champagne, gold, and copper.

If your dress is on the fun and flirty side, then you might want to get a little more playful with your nails.

Some great ideas for a fun flirty black prom dress would be mint green, hot pink, lemon or a pastel pink nail color. Neon orange and bright yellow nails would also work.

For a modern and minimalist look, plain nails in a neutral color like white, gray, tan, cream, or beige will do.

What undertones does your skin have?

My second tip is to look at your skin’s undertones. Are you warm or cold?

If you don’t know your skin’s undertone, here’s a quick way to check it out.

Look at the veins in your wrist in natural light.

If your veins appear blue or bluish-purple, you have a cool tone.

If they appear more green or greenish yellow, then you are warm.

If you can’t really tell, you might be neutral, which means you can wear nail polish of any undertone.

Once you know if you’re warm or cool, a great trick is to find a nail polish (any color) that has the same undertone as you.

So if you’re cool, look for nail polishes with cool undertones and vice versa.

If you are unsure whether a nail polish color is warm or cool, check the polish descriptions.

Zoya is great at explaining the overall tone of the polish and you can search her website for warm or cool.

Do you want your nails to stand out?

My third tip for matching your nails to your prom dress is to think about how much you want your nails to stand out.

I mean, it’s prom, so you’ll probably want all eyes on your dress, right?

In this case, you should keep your nails simple and avoid too much glitter or flashy colors.

A good way to gauge this is to think about how “busy” your dress is.

Does it have a lot of details? Or is it more subtle?

You can complement a detailed ball gown by adding a modest nail color and understated design.

If you have a lot of detail on your dress, you don’t want a ton of gems, glitter, etc on your nails as it will draw attention away from the dress.

If your black prom dress is minimal, vintage, or understated, you might want to be bolder with your nail choice.

You can opt for a contrasting color like yellow, a bold metallic, or some cute nail art to complete the look.

Final Thoughts

I hope I was able to answer your question about what nail polish color goes with a black dress.

Don’t worry too much about finding the perfect nail polish.

It’s hard to find nail polish colors that don’t work with black.

So the chances of you getting it right are pretty good!

Focus less on which colors go well with your black dress and more on the look you want.

That way you will find that you are more inspired.

I hope I gave you some good ideas and see you next time 🙂

Good luck and have fun in your black dress 🤗

We have compiled the best colors to go with a black dress and all you have to do is choose the best color for you.

What this article covers:

The colors that look great with a black dress and how to wear them

Black

Black is a nail polish color that goes with everything. A black dress with black nail polish is a safe bet for anyone struggling to choose a nail color. It is suitable for both casual and extravagant events. You can also spice up your manicure and pedicure in different ways.

A simple black manicure can look great with a black dress, heel of a different color and accessories. This is a classic look that looks well put together.

If this is too boring for you and you want to jazz it up, add a glitter polish over the black base color. Try our In The Moonlight nail polish for the best result. Suddenly your subtle accessory has a little sparkle that’s fun and cute. You can also opt for a black shimmering nail polish for the same effect.

Ombre is also a good alternative for those who want to add a bit of color to their black nails or you can create a simple nail art design. You can also try a black French tip to add sophistication to your nail look.

White

You might have a question on your mind and it’s probably “does white nail polish look good with a black dress?”. The answer is yes. The combination has always been timeless, but there are ways to change it up a bit.

There’s nothing wrong with a classic white manicure, but for formal occasions you might want to give your nail look a twist. The goal is to look sophisticated and elegant. A great manicure to achieve this look is the French manicure. It is classy and is still popular with many people today.

Like black nail polish, white nail polish also serves as a great base coat. You can top it off with glitter nail polish to add a sparkly touch. It’s gorgeous and makes your whole outfit look a little brighter even if you’re wearing a black dress.

You’re not limited to using a classic white palette either. For something a little different, you can go for ivory or pearl shades that also look stunning against black.

These bright colors look great with light makeup. All the attention should be on your dress because that is the main piece. The nail polish and accessories should match or have complementary shades to complete your look.

file

Nude colors are perfect for everyday nail polish because of their versatility. You can easily switch your outfits from work day to evening glam and it complements the black tie perfectly.

It doesn’t distract from the dress, and you’ll still feel comfortable having a manicure for your formal event. It looks chic on the hand and serves as a subtle accessory.

If you wear nude nail polish, we recommend choosing a color that closely matches your skin tone. You don’t want something that’s an exact match. A light or dark shade is perfect. If your skin has a cool undertone, choose a nail polish that resembles that undertone. The same goes for warm undertones.

Nude nail polish looks stunning as a plain manicure. You can wear it with a costume to make the dress stand out as the main piece, or you can wear it with something simple for a simple, chic look.

However, do not underestimate the power of nude colors. You don’t have to go for a basic nude manicure if you don’t want to. There are so many beautiful options for nude manicures out there. You will surely find a match that suits the look you have planned for your formal event.

Red

Red is the epitome of a classic nail polish color. It’s bold and dangerous, and it’s a rich, bold color. Someone who wears red nail polish always stands out from the crowd.

This color is a certifiable gorgeous color that looks sophisticated for any formal event. Red nail polish with a red lip is undeniably beautiful and will turn heads. Red and black have always been a classy combination that, in our opinion, is hard to beat.

Our red nail polish options are endless. You might get red in the face when you have to choose from them.

Bright red is the perfect color for a confident and bold look. If you wear bright red, be sure to give the nail the moment it deserves. That means wearing different colored accessories and light makeup with a red lip.

If you want a more subtle toned look, darker shades of red are perfect for you. Because of the darker tones in the red, you have more leeway to play with neutral colors. Deeper shades of red are a great look for evening events.

Lighter shades

Lighter shades include but are not limited to your purples, blues, and pinks. Each of these colors will add a different perspective to your black dress look.

Purple nail polishes are cute and flirty. Purple nail polish goes best with a black dress because it contrasts with the hue. It also looks good on any skin tone. This color is perfect for events throughout the year due to its bright nature.

Blue nail polish also looks great with black dresses. Blue and black are nostalgic when paired together because anyone would be pairing these colors together in the mid-2010s. Any shade of blue pairs well with black, but we recommend lighter shades of blue for daytime events and darker shades of blue for evening events.

Much like blue nail polish looks nostalgic with black, so does pink. Pink nail polish can border on both ends of pretty and punk. Depending on how you want to style the black dress with the nail polish and the rest of the components of your outfit, pink and black also make a stunning pair.

These colors are also not limited to monochromatic manicures. You can explore many nail art designs to create something perfect for the event you are attending.

How to do your nails for a formal event

Your nails are part of your outfit. It can be either your main accessory or a subtle one.

The type of manicure you choose depends on the event you are attending. For a red carpet event, you can afford to go all out with your manicure and accessories. A low-key formal event calls for a more subtle manicure.

For formal occasions, it is always best to have a fresh manicure. As said, your nails are an accessory so a broken manicure can ruin your entire look.

Gel manicures are the best option for a long-lasting manicure and never chip. They are often shiny and last up to 3 weeks. If you prefer to do your nails yourself, you need to invest in a good base and top coat to achieve the best at-home manicure.

A good top coat and base coat will reduce the chance of chipping and ensure your manicure lasts longer than if you just applied nail polish. You can also buy nail polish that gives a gel finish as gel manicures are time consuming.

If you want to match your nail polish to your dress, you should opt for different colored accessories. You can try to find an exact color match or something similar in the color palette.

If you want to match your nail polish to your shoes, the same goes. You want something in a similar color range, or a matchstick. Gold or silver shoes look great with a glitter polish or keep it simple with nude.

Another tip is that your manicure and pedicure don’t always have to match. You can spice up your nails by having clear nail polish on your fingernails and a complementary cream nail polish on your toes.

Evaluate the pieces of your outfit to find a good color match for your nail polish. Remember that these elements should be synced to make it look good.

Bold, shiny nails — while fun — can be distracting (and remember, this day is about your boyfriend). “Neutrals and softer pinks are tried-and-true nail colors that embody simplicity and romance,” says Woolridge. Psst: one of her favorites is Saved by Janet & Jo., a subtle and sweet blush. It can be worn alone or as a base for a French manicure or a minimalist design.

Not in pink or white? Consider everything from the nude family of nail polishes. “They lengthen the appearance of nails and make even the shortest nails look amazing,” explains Woolrdige. If you’re looking for the perfect nude for your skin tone, check out our roundup of nude nail polishes for every skin tone.

If you’re keen to rock a colorful mani, look to the bride first. Then come up with ideas to complement your outfit. For example, navy blue nails would pair well with a blue color scheme, while sage green would be great for a neutral color palette. A shop ver or baby blue manicure is also great for any spring wedding.

Nail ideas for bridesmaids

Ready to get inspired? Check out our favorite bridesmaid nail ideas below.

Neutral nails

Woolridge put it best: you just can’t go wrong with neutral nails. A nude polish looks effortlessly gorgeous and instantly lengthens your nails (even if you keep them short). Plus, it fits any season and any style, so you don’t have to worry about conflict. But the best? The closer the shade is to your skin tone, the harder it will be to spot accidental chipping.

French manicure

Elena Grama/Shutterstock.com

There’s a reason French manicures are so popular at weddings. They look clean and fresh and go with everything (from dark red to pastel pink to light blue). The painted on French tips will spice up any look and make this manicure especially great for spring and summer weddings. If you want to take that bridesmaid nail a step further, Woolridge recommends personalizing it. “One example a bridal party can try is what I like to call the monogram Frenchie, which is a classic French manicure with an accent nail that bears the bridesmaid’s monogrammed initials,” she says.

light pink

If you’re worried about picking the wrong color, we highly recommend opting for a soft pink. It’s colorful yet has a neutral feel and will complement any outfit or wedding theme. Plus, it adds a touch of brightness to your overall look and draws attention to any flowers you might be holding. If light pink feels a little too cute for you, consider wearing a lighter shade of mauve instead. Or elevate it by covering it with a sparkling nail polish for pink glitter nails.

Bold and bright

We love a neon nail moment. Before you decide on a bold, bright color, you should check with the guest of honor first. If they approve your choice, do it. Any light shade will look great with a neutral outfit. If you’re wearing a specific color, be strategic when choosing a complementary color. A good rule of thumb is to stick to your outfit’s color family. For example, if you’re wearing a blue dress, light blue, green, or purple will look harmonious. Alternatively, if you’re wearing a pink dress, consider wearing bright pink, red, or orange. If you’re wearing a neutral outfit, consider mixing colors (as shown in the image above).

Dark & moody

If soft pinks and neutral nudes aren’t your thing, consider going dark and moody instead. A dark hue like black, navy blue, dark purple, or dark green is an easy way to show off your personality. A dark nail polish still feels neutral enough not to take focus away from the couple. Just make sure the color you choose doesn’t clash with your outfit. Pro tip: We strongly recommend bridesmaids to get gel nails for darker colors as chipping can be more noticeable. Want to make it even edgier? Complete the look with a matte coat.

Creative nail design

Spice up a simple manicure with a minimalist design. “This option allows the bridal party to incorporate the wedding colors into their nails without flushing their look with a shade,” explains Woolridge. The designs don’t have to be particularly complicated – they can be as simple as thin vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines. You can use any color, but Woolridge is a fan of white and neutral tones. “Minimalist designs with white and neutral tones are also great because these designs stand out up close, but from a distance the nails look extremely subtle,” she says. “This allows for great mani photos and nailfies without the distracting nail art that could potentially clash in group photos. It’s a win-win situation!” Discover different nail design ideas and bring pictures of your favorites to the nail designer.

Ombre manicure

Jam Travel/Shutterstock.com

Another fun yet subtle bridesmaid nail idea? Ombre wedding manicure. Ombre nails consist of a gradient on the nails. It can be on each individual nail (like a pretty watercolor painting) or spread over all the nails (so each nail is a slightly different color). We are fans of this wedding nail design for bridesmaids because it is so easy to make. All you need is a base coat, two to three shades of nail polish, a makeup sponge and a top coat. Sweep the colors across the sponge, then lightly press them into your nail a few times, starting at the cuticle. Voila!

Everyone should have a white dress in their closet. A simple white dress is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing there is! A white dress can suit any occasion. It goes with everything and it’s so easy to dress up or down. So what nail polish color goes with a white dress?

Well… the choices are pretty much endless.

So, if white goes with almost all colors, how do you narrow it down?

Don’t panic because in this post we are going to look at the best nail colors to go with your white dress.

I will recommend specific nail polish colors that go perfectly with white.

I also share tips, tricks and advice on how to choose the perfect nail color for you.

We’re about to dive deep into what nail polish color goes with a white dress?

In a hurry?

Here is the short and quick answer to what nail polish color goes with a white dress:

Most nail polish colors go well with a white dress. Try black, navy, beige, brown, taupe, or gray nails with a white dress if you like neutral colors. You can also wear gold, silver or copper nail polish. Olive, forest, sage or emerald green will look great with a white dress. Cherry, orange or orange-red also work. Sky or royal blue, lemon, mustard, or bright yellow, as well as lilac, violet, or teal nails also work well.

Now you have some ideas – awesome!

Let’s go deeper and see what nail polish color goes with a white dress and what looks you can create.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

Table of Contents:

Tips, tricks and advice on choosing the right paint color

“How do you match your nails to your dress?”. I’ve heard this question so many times.

Many people struggle when it comes to matching nails to their outfits.

So in this section, we’ll go over some important things to think about when planning your overall look.

First, let me say that the information and color matching in this post works for any white clothing, not just dresses.

You can wear any of the nail colors suggested here with a white shirt, white t-shirt, white sweater… well, you get the point.

Please don’t be tempted to skip this section because these tips are like gold dust.

Once you’ve finished reading, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to make great color choices.

So when planning an outfit, where do you start?

Well, here is the first question to ask yourself.

What do I like and what suits my style?

A white dress can be tricky to style because it’s basically a blank canvas.

There are so many different directions to go that it can be difficult to make a decision.

Glamor or casual?

Should you go for an edgy, tatty look or something more elegant and timeless?

The chosen nail polish color should reflect your personal taste.

Think about what suits you and your preferred style.

If you’re not sure what your current style is, look in your closet and pull out your favorite pieces.

You can also ask your friends or take a quiz online.

Do you want a vintage look or an artistic vibe?

Then you can pair your white dress with a delicate brown, warm yellow, peachy, lavender or pale green nail polish.

Do you like a casual, minimalist or boho look?

Then white, grey, blush or pink could be just the thing.

Do you want to attract attention with an eye-catching or sexy look?

Then royal blue, canary yellow or a bright cherry red polish could be a good choice for you.

If a nail polish color goes with your dress but you don’t like it – stay away!

With a white dress, it’s easy to find a color that you love and want to wear again and again.

On to the next question to ask yourself.

What season is it?

Thinking about when you’re going to wear your dress can help you find the perfect nail color.

We all know that some colors are seasonal.

Here are a few examples:

Spring colors – pastel, coral, lemon yellow, sky and baby blue.

Summer colors – bright shades of orange, yellow, lime and fuschia.

Autumn – earthy greens, browns, oranges and mustard yellows.

Winter colors – cool blue, white, silver, gold and berry red.

Nail polish brands are always releasing new collections for each season.

You can use these collections as a source of inspiration when choosing nail colors to match your outfit.

If you’re wearing your dress in the fall, choosing a nail color from a fall collection is a no-brainer.

Not only will it work for the season, but it’s also a great way to stay on trend.

Here’s another key question to ask yourself:

What is the occasion?

Take a moment to think about where you are going and what you are going to do in your dress.

This can really help you narrow down your color choices.

Is it a special occasion or a formal event like prom?

If it is a formal event, you can exclude pastel and neutral tones.

Why?

Because pastels and neutrals are more suitable for daytime events or outdoor activities.

Metallic polishes like gold, silver, rose gold, or copper are great choices with a white dress for a formal event.

You can also opt for any nail color with a metallic finish, such as emerald green.

Bold nail polish and jewel tones work well for formal occasions. So does classic red and navy.

The type of event could also be a factor in choosing your nail polish.

Is it a celebration or something more serious?

The nail color you wear to a friend’s wedding can be very different than the color you would wear to a work event, funeral, or job interview.

I’ll just give you a few suggestions here.

In fashion there are no rules, only creativity.

Wear a pastel to a formal event and a metallic to lunch if that’s what your heart desires!

I’m just trying to give you some things to think about in case you need a little help narrowing it down.

Here is another example:

Let’s say you’re planning a first date look.

You could choose a nail polish in a color like blush, lavender, or pink.

Why?

Because these colors are feminine and romantic.

Whatever the occasion, it’s always a good idea to think about the mood you want to create and choose a polish that will help you achieve that mood.

Now let’s see what nail polish colors go well with a white dress.

We start with neutrals.

What nail polish color goes with a white dress? Neutral polish colors that go.

Neutral nail polish colors are the best!

No matter what you’re wearing, you can never go wrong with neutral colors.

They go with everything and suit every occasion.

I love neutral colors so much I wrote a post about them.

Listen. It’s called 14 nail polish colors to go with any outfit.

1 or 2 of the colors might surprise you!

White is a neutral color, so you can wear it with any other neutral nail polish color.

However, depending on your skin tone and the look you want, some neutrals may work better for you.

Here are the best neutral nail polish colors to pair with your white dress.

Black

Black and white is a glamorous and stylish combination that never goes out of style.

But a word of caution. If you’re super pale (like me) or have a soft color, then black nails might look too gothic on you.

If goth is the look you’re going for, then great! But if not, consider navy blue instead.

marine

I can’t get over how awesome navy nails are!

Navy nails are sophisticated, classy, elegant and timeless.

They have become my go-to place for formal events.

I love how navy and white look together – elegant but unexpected.

Navy nails are also incredibly versatile.

Depending on what you’re wearing, they can give you a moody, dark feel appropriate for a funeral.

Or they can elevate an outfit to fashionista status.

Wear your white dress one day and wear blue jeans the next.

It’s crazy how much navy blue nails can upgrade a blue jean outfit!

beige

Beige nails with a white dress might seem boring. But it doesn’t have to be.

I personally love the sophisticated, elegant and timeless looks that you can create by combining beige and white.

A dream for minimalists!

To me, beige nails convey understated, effortless, stylish elegance with a white dress.

If you want to look fabulous in a way that seems like you haven’t tried too hard, this is a great combo to try.

Beige nails and a white dress go very well with brown or light brown accessories. So if your shoes are brown, you’ve just found your ideal combination!

Brown

Brown nails may not be the most glamorous nail color choice.

But brown can work very well as a nude on dark skin.

I wouldn’t suggest wearing brown with your white dress for a formal event.

But if you’re looking for an earthy, natural vibe that’s casual and perfect for summer – hello brown nail polish!

taupe

Are your shoes, bags or other accessories gray or tan?

If so, taupe nail polish will complement your white dress outfit perfectly!

Even if you don’t wear gray or tan, taupe nails give you a sophisticated look that’s modern and chic.

For a relaxed, casual vibe, taupe nail polish is also a great choice.

Gray

Want a look that exudes cool sophistication?

Try a stone cold gray nail polish.

If you wear white, you can theoretically wear any gray nail polish.

However, if you want contrast, it’s best to stick with medium to dark grays.

Medium, cool shades of gray (like stone) pair perfectly with a white dress for a modern, minimalist look.

You should avoid lighter shades of gray as they don’t provide enough contrast.

Cool colors that go well with a white dress

The colors in this section are all based on Cool.

They tend to be most flattering on cool-skinned beauties.

If the veins on your wrist look blue, then your skin has cool undertones, and the Polish colors in this section will be most flattering on you.

You can wear these nail colors even if you have neutral skin.

Green

There are some shades of green that really go with a white dress.

For maximum impact, I recommend emerald green!

Emerald green adds a touch of luxury to a white dress that is chic and sophisticated.

It will help you take your look to the next level for formal events.

Try wearing an emerald green polish with your white dress, I guarantee you will get loads of compliments!

OPI makes a gorgeous emerald green polish. It’s called Suzi-san climbs Fuji-san.

Or try Zoya’s Giovanna.

Sage and white also go really well together.

I love sage nails with a white dress for summer.

Sage and white are great when you want something more casual.

I love Essie’s Say You Love Me.

If you want something impactful but not too formal, consider Forest Green.

This is another bold shade of green that pairs well with a white dress and makes a bold statement.

Blue green

Teal is a cool teal shade that looks fabulous with a white dress.

It’s a versatile color that suits every season.

Teal works for any occasion. But it’s a particularly good color for job interviews.

This is because teal conveys clarity of thought and calm.

I like OPIs Is That a Spear in your Pocket?

And Essie’s Garden Variety.

violet

Do you want an elegant, romantic and feminine look?

Then a purple polish could be just the thing for you.

Light, soft shades of purple, such as lilac and lavender, complement a white dress beautifully.

Blue

Most shades of blue lacquer go well with a white dress.

For a relaxed, summery vibe, try a sky blue polish like Essie’s Borrowed and Blue.

But if you want to make a statement, opt for something like royal blue or even cobalt.

If you’re looking for a bold blue that suits all skin tones, I’d recommend Zoya’s Tallulah.

What nail polish color goes with a white dress? Warm colors that work.

The colors in this section all have warm undertones, meaning they look best on warm-skinned beauties.

You don’t necessarily have to have a warm skin tone to wear these colors.

But if your skin is warm, these nail polish colors will complement your undertone perfectly.

Yellow

For a pop of color that will liven up a white dress, opt for yellow nail polish.

Yellow is the perfect accent color for white.

It is particularly suitable for spring and summer outfits.

You could go for a bright sunny yellow like Zoya’s Pippa if you want something bold with lots of personality.

Or you could try a pastel lemon yellow like Essie’s Summer Soulstice or Zoya’s Daisy, or mustard yellow like OPI’s IT shade.

OPI’s No Faux Yellow is very effective and will totally liven up your outfit!

It is an amazing light yellow shade that won the 2021 Glamor Beauty Award.

Earth tones that complement a white dress

Earthy nail polish colors go well with white.

We’ve already talked about sage green.

You can wear sage anytime you want an earthy, toned-down look.

Sage green works like a neutral too – so you can wear it with most things.

If you want laid-back, summery festival vibes, pair your white dress with sage nails.

If you want stylish and sophisticated (but still earthy) – then try olive green.

Brown and terracotta tones should also work well.

Check out CND’s Clay Canyon or Zoya’s Dea.

Bold Polish colors that go well with a white dress

Do you want eye-catching nails that will catch everyone’s eyes?

If so, this is the section for you.

Let’s take a look at some bold and beautiful polish options.

To make these nails stand out!

yellow and green

Look for super strong yellows and greens for maximum impact.

Think neon. The brighter the better!

Yellows with Sunshine in the name or description are usually a safe bet.

Stay away from faded pastels and mustard.

It doesn’t get much bolder than OPI’s award-winning No Faux Yellow.

Chartreuse is an attention-grabbing yellow-green shade.

Lime green is another great option to draw all eyes to your nails.

Try Zoya’s Link for a kicking green.

It’s a flashy neon green that screams “Look at me!”

Orange and Red Orange

Depending on the color you choose, orange is a good choice for a bold or boho look.

It’s perfect for summer parties.

Orange is a fun color that is both expressive and positive.

Boost the intensity and warmth with nails in a bright red-orange hue.

Look for bright, bold coral or red tones with lots of orange.

If you like red orange nails, Zoya’s Virginia and Rocha are amazing shades to try.

What nail polish color goes with a white dress? Metallic nail polish colors that work

If you like your metallics, I have great news!

Gold, silver, copper, and rose gold all pair very well with a white dress.

So go crazy with nails and accessories in any metallic you like!

Why not choose your favorite necklace, ring or earrings and paint your nails to match!

Of course, any nail polish color with a metallic finish is also fair game.

Think shimmery green, metallic purple or electric blue, for example.

Do you love rose gold? Try Zoya’s Esme or Essie’s Penny Talk – they’re both beautiful!

For silver, use something like OPI’s Silver on Ice.

I don’t wear gold nail polish but my gold loving friends say Zoya’s Soleil is good.

It’s an antique gold that’s great for warm skin tones.

Other Polish colors that match a white dress

Still looking for the perfect nail polish match?

Then check out these ideas for some other Polish colors that go well with a white dress.

Pink

I love the softness of blush pink nails with a white dress.

Blush nails are understated and chic.

They give you a feminine look that is delicate and romantic – perfect for a date.

My favorite blushes are Zoya’s Joss and China Glaze’s Don’t Make Me Blush.

raspberry red

Berry tones like raspberry pair well with a white dress all year round.

But I particularly enjoy this combination in the autumn and winter months.

If you like raspberry nails and glitter, try Blaze by Zoya – it’s gorgeous!

Dusty Rose

This is one of my personal favorites.

Dusty rose nails look dreamy and oh so classy with a white dress.

If you have fair skin or a delicate complexion and you like the image of an English country garden, then get a Dusty Rose nail polish.

Nails Inc in the Uptown color is good. Such is Dior’s Incognito.

Prom nails for a white dress

If you’re going to wear white to prom, this section is for you!

Prom is a formal event, but it can also be an opportunity to show off your creativity and personality.

I guess you’ve already chosen your dress, haven’t you?

Then let the dress guide you in your choice of nail color.

What do I mean?

Well, let’s break it down.

Here are some things to think about.

Tips for choosing prom nails to match a white dress

First, take a few seconds to think about how you would describe your prom dress.

Is it classically elegant? fun and flirty? Minimalist and modern? Or quirky and different?

When choosing a nail color for prom, try to consider the overall look of the dress.

For example, if you are wearing an elegant, stylish, and very formal dress, you want a nail color that matches that mood.

Some great options for a more traditional, formal white dress would be navy, emerald, forest green, taupe, gray, gold, dusty rose, and sage green.

If your dress is on the fun and flirty side, then you might want to get a little more playful with your nails.

Some great fun flirty white prom dress ideas would be bright yellow, pink, or lavender nails. Coral and peach nails would also work.

For a modern and minimalist look, plain nails in another neutral color like white, gray, navy blue, tan, or beige will do.

What are the undertones in your dress?

My second tip is to pay attention to the undertones in your dress. Are they warm or cool?

If your dress is more of a yellowish white, like ivory, it is warm.

If it’s pure white, it’s most likely cool.

Once you know if the white shade of your dress is warm or cool, a great trick is to find a nail polish (any color) that has the same undertone as your dress.

So if your dress is cool, look for nail polishes with cool undertones and vice versa.

If your white prom dress is minimal, vintage, or understated, then you might want to be bolder with your nail choice.

You can opt for a high-contrast cobalt blue or a bold metallic to complete the look.

Final Thoughts

So what have we learned by studying what color nail polish goes with a white dress?

You don’t have to worry about finding the perfect nail polish for your white dress.

White is neutral. It goes with everything and everyone.

That said, it would be really hard to choose a paint color that didn’t work at all!

Answer the questions above, think about your personal style and the look you want, and take it from there.

Looking for inspiration for your next mani? Do you want to see nail polish colors that go well together?

If you want to know what nail colors go together like PB and J, cupcakes and frosting or cookies and cream then look no further 🙂

In this post, we’re going to dip our toes into a little color theory.

Once you have the basics of mixing and matching, let’s take a look at some amazing nail polish color combinations that you might not have thought of.

We also show you specific examples of the exact shades that go best together.

So you don’t have to worry about finding the perfect pearlescent nude, pastel yellow, mint green or light pink.

Sounds good?

Then let’s get started right away!

Why is Choosing the Right Nail Polish Colors Important?

Choosing the right nail polish color and nail polish colors that go well together is much more important than the design.

You don’t always need a fancy design to get tons of compliments on your nails.

You can create (or copy) the most amazing nail design ever to grace the IG feeds, but if the colors aren’t quite right, it won’t look nearly as good as it could.

But if you know a little bit about color theory and have a basic understanding of what colors work together and why…

Now this is a total game changer.

Once acquired, you can use your color matching skills to create really simple but absolutely amazing looks that all your friends will want to copy!

With a little color theory, not only will your nail polish pairings always go together, but you can also figure out which colors work best with certain outfits.

And you can save time and money by not buying nail polish colors that clash with the colors that dominate your wardrobe.

Now that we’ve covered the importance of matching the right colors, let’s look at which color combinations work.

1. 2 (or more) neutrals.

Neutrals are the most versatile colors in color theory.

Technically, neutrals are “colors with little to no color,” which sounds kind of weird.

It just means that neutral colors mix easily with most, if not all, other colors.

So if you paint your nails neutral colors there is a really good chance they will go with anything and everything in your closet!

I personally love neutral colors.

Most of my wardrobe (and my nail polish collection) is made up of them.

Neutral colors like black, white, and gray are so versatile and easy to mix and match that they’re a great choice for your nails, especially if you like to mix and match colors in your outfits.

They also look just as good with minimalist outfits that consist of neutral colors.

The best thing about neutral colors is that you can pick any 2 neutral colors (or more) and you can guarantee they are nail polish colors that go well together.

If you find neutral colors a little less exciting, don’t worry because it’s not all black, white, and gray.

Here’s a list of 15 neutral colors to experiment with.

Try combining 2 or more of the following colors in your next manicure and be amazed at how long it can take before you feel the need to switch up those nails again:

Neutral nail polish colors that go well together:

Black

White

Gray

marine

Silver

beige

Brown

cream

ivory

olive green

sage green

Naked

Blush

taupe

Tan

It’s important to note that some neutrals are a bit more versatile than others. Those with the least amount of color, like black and white, go with everything.

But neutrals with stronger color undertones, like ivory (with yellow undertones), sage and olive greens and blushes (pink undertones), while still amazingly versatile, can be less versatile than your classic neutrals like black and white.

There are so many possible color combinations in this little “neutral” category alone.

Here are some of my personal favorite neutral-on-neutral combinations using 2 or 3 different neutral colors:

Grey, white and pink

Essie – Press Pause / OPI – Alpine Snow / Essie – Adore-A-Ball

(Click on the links above to check prices on Amazon)

navy and white

Navy and white are perfect examples of neutral nail polish colors that go well together. This is one of my favorite combinations.

Essie Blazer for Boys After School / OPI – Alpine Snow

Black and Silver

Essie – Liquorice / OPI Designer Series – Charisma

Beige and blush

OPI – Maintaining My Sandiness / OPI – Aphrodite’s Pink Nightgown

sage green, gray and silver

Here are 3 beautiful nail polish colors that go well together:

Essie – Say You Love Me / OPI – I Cannoli Wear / OPI Designer Series – Radiance

Naked and brown

Essie – rainwear don’t care / Essie – don’t be latte

Olive green and taupe

OPI – Olive for Green / OPI – Taupe-less Beach

When it comes to coordinating your neutral colors, personal preference comes into play as well.

For example, although brown and gray technically go together, I would never combine them simply because I just don’t like that particular combination.

A note on glitter, metallics and other finishes.

If, like me, you love the versatility of neutral tones – but also like shiny things, then adding some glitter to your neutral manicure is an easy way to add a touch of glamor.

Essie – Sparkle on top

You can either stick to your neutral color palette and use silver glitter on a black and white manicure, for example.

Or you could add some interest by sticking on a regular and a metallic version of your chosen color, a mix of matte and high-gloss finishes, or a few nail stones.

Ok, that’s it for our first color combination.

Ready for Option 2?

Let’s dive in.

2. 1 or 2 neutrals and any other color.

I’ll say it again. I love neutrals.

Not only do they all go together, but neutral colors go with every other color.

This second option simply builds on the first.

To create this next color combo, take 1 or 2 of your favorite neutral colors from the list above, then add any other color you like!

Since you’re only introducing one color, you don’t have to worry about conflicts.

This combo is a great option if you just want a pop of color or if you’re unsure about color matching.

Seriously, you can’t go wrong with this method!

For great color combinations that always work, try picking 1 or 2 neutral colors from the list above and pairing them with any other color you like.

Think hot pink, bright yellow and bright orange, or pastel green, bright blue and lilac, everything goes with this combination, so have some fun!

Some of my favorite combinations with one or two neutral colors and another color are:

pink and grey

OPI – Don’t Bossa Nova Me Around / OPI – Steel Waters Run Deep

Navy and Coral

essie – After School Boy Blazer / OPI – Coral-ing Your Spirit Animal

Navy and mint green

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it should be enough to get you inspired.

Add in the options for different finishes (matte, high gloss, metallic, gems, etc.) and this method of color matching should last forever!

Then, if you get bored with neutral colors, you can just move on to color combo number 3 below 🙂

3. Shades of the same color.

This is a really simple yet very effective way to create a well put together nail look.

All you have to do is follow one simple rule.

Stick to one main color.

Why?

Because shades of the same color always go well together.

So why not use 2 to 3 or even 4 or 5 shades of the same color to create amazing monochromatic (i.e. all one color) nails!

I like doing that with blues.

Basically, I use 5 different shades of blue.

I start by painting my thumbs in the darkest shade (usually a navy blue).

Next, I choose a slightly lighter shade for my index fingers.

I pick another slightly lighter shade for the middle fingers and so on until I get to the lightest shade on my pinkies.

It’s such a simple idea but the results are amazing.

I always get loads of compliments when I do my nails like this.

Obviously you don’t have to use blue, this method works with absolutely any color you can think of (provided you have at least 5 different shades of it).

Don’t panic if you don’t have 5 different shades of the same color!

With only 2 or 3 shades you can still create beautiful solid color designs.

Try combining 2 or 3 shades of the same color in your chosen nail art design, which can range from a few polka dots to a subtle ombre.

The monochromatic route is great for manicures because you can create contrasting or subtle looks depending on the shades you choose.

If you only have 2 shades of the same color or don’t have time for nail art, you can try painting in a 3,2 formation (1 shade on the index and pinky and the other on the rest of your nails). ).

As with the first 2 color combos, you can mix things up a bit here too, using a glitter or metallic in the same color you’re working with.

I recently did this with purple. I used this shade called Pile on the Sprinkles from OPI’s Hello Kitty collection on my index finger and pinky.

OPI – Stack the sprinkles

Then I applied this gorgeous blue purple from the same collection to the rest of my nails.

OPI – Hello pretty ones

I loved the finished look and would highly recommend mixing a glitter polish and a regular one in the same color for amazing results!

4. Combine 2 or 3 analogous colors.

Analogous coloring could be your secret weapon when it comes to nail design.

What the heck is an analog color scheme?

Well, in color theory, analogous colors are those that are next to each other on the color wheel.

Colors that are adjacent on the color wheel are usually grouped in groups of 3 to create an analogous color scheme.

For example, you can combine blue, teal, and green, or red, orange-red, and orange, or violet, blue-violet, and blue.

Any of these trios would work harmoniously together.

You don’t have to use 3 colors if you don’t want to.

You can get great results (and create interesting and well-matched manis) simply by using 2 next-door neighbors on the color wheel.

Finding the right balance in an analogous color scheme can be a little tricky.

Most designers recommend a 60/30/10 percentage split.

So the main color should cover about 60% of your nails.

The second, “supporting” color should cover about 30% of your nails.

And the final color should be used as an accent and cover about 10% of your nails.

Using 3 bold colors can get a bit overwhelming at times.

To calm things down a bit, you might want to use muted versions of your chosen colors, or combine two analogous colors and one neutral color to anchor your design, although this is entirely optional.

Again, you can play with different textures and finishes within your analogue color scheme to create a unique look.

Plus, you don’t have to stop at 3!

If you’re feeling adventurous, the experts say you can also combine up to 5 colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel – oops!

Here are some very simple analogous color combinations you can try to get started:

orange and red

orange and yellow

blue and green

blue and violet

pink and purple

green and yellow

Ready for some dramatic, contrasting color combinations?

Proceed to option 5.

5. Combine 2 complementary colors.

Complementary colors are opposites.

That is, they sit directly opposite each other on the color wheel.

Red and green, orange and blue, and purple and yellow are all examples of complementary colors—at the simplest level.

It gets a bit more complicated when you start looking at combinations like red-purple and yellow-green, yellow-orange and blue-purple, or orange-red and blue-green, for example.

As a general rule, however, no matter how complicated the version of the color wheel you’re looking at, the opposite color will always work well.

If you use 2 nail polish colors that complement each other, the result will be a high-contrast, eye-catching and energetic look.

Free color combos always include 1 warm color (like orange, red, or yellow) and 1 cool color (like blue, purple, or green).

This helps achieve the strong contrasts and big impact associated with complementary color schemes.

So, if you’re feeling dramatic and want nails that will stand out, you might want to try this color matching method!

Here is a list of ideas to get you started:

Seafoam green and coral

sky blue and light orange

Purple and lemon yellow

Deep purple and mustard

cyan and dark orange

peach and turquoise

Burnt Umber and Pacific Blue

Red Orange and Royal Blue

Magenta and warm caramel yellow

Powder blue and tangerine

Bright red and navy blue

Mulberry and Chartreuse

Cherry red and emerald green

Purple and Gold

Pink and spring green

Raspberry pink and mint green

Lavender purple and amber yellow

Frequently Asked Question about Nails Trends

As a style coach, I work with clients to achieve a look that reflects their personality, body type and age. Clothing is not the only aspect we discuss. Other topics we often tackle are skincare, makeup, and even hairstyles. With the support of my experienced friends (make-up artists, beauticians, etc.) and my many years of experience, I can help my clients to discover a look that is convincing in their own skin.

Many style and beauty questions come to me from either individual clients, a member of the SYC Society, or readers of my monthly column at StyleBluePrint. Especially this summer, customers have been asking for common nail questions and trends. Now more than ever we are seeing fun trends and lots of variety.

Here’s a compilation of the many nail questions I’ve received and my answers to them.

Q: What is your favorite nail polish to use at home?

A: I recently gave up Gel and SNS after trying them both for years! My nails were weak and sad all over after using them consistently. I found these 2 regular polishes that last at least a week without chipping which is pretty awesome considering how much I use my hands: Infinite Shine by OPI and Tom Ford Nail Lacquer.

Q: Do I need to match my nail color with my outfit for a special occasion?

A: If you choose a nail color to match your outfit for a special occasion, you don’t feel like you need to match it with your outfit. Instead, opt for a color that complements her without matching her. A great example would be if you wear a navy blue dress, choose a coral colored lacquer in the summer and a deep red in the winter. Or if you’re wearing a purple dress, try a gray, navy blue, or even white polish.

Q: Do my fingernail polish and toenail polish have to match?

A: Your toenail color and fingernail colors do not have to be the same color. It looks more effortless if you like a more consistent look, so try a tonal coloring method with 2 shades of the same color family.

Q: When it comes to my nails, I tend to stick to the same shade. What color suggestions do you have?

A: It’s time to move away from ballet slipper and bubble bath colors. There are SO many wonderful neutrals out there; Try something new with your next manicure. I personally love a matte white but avoid the outdated French manicure.

Q: What are the trends for the remainder of summer and what colors do you suggest for Fall/Winter 2018?

A: For the remaining days of summer, it’s all about bright and bold nails! Sunny yellow, red-orange, rich purple and other cheerful colors are super fun and stylish. For Fall/Winter 2018 we will see rich metallics, deep navy blues and grays and of course classic rich reds!
