It’s for those who want to go beyond the simple instructions that we have on the back of our business cards:

First, make sure you’re starting with good quality henna from a reputable supplier and that you’ve prepared it properly. Without that, even the best aftercare in the world won’t help…

1. Let the henna dry.

It will take about half an hour for the henna paste to dry enough that you don’t have to worry about smearing. Keep all clothing, hair, etc. away from your henna design for at least half an hour.

2. Leave the henna on.

Leave the henna on for as long as possible! The longer you leave the henna on, the darker the color will be and the longer it will last. Leave it on for at least 1 hour; overnight is best.

3. Perform additional steps for a better stain.

Do one or both while the henna paste is still applied for best results:

1. Use lemon sugar spray sealer. Be careful not to oversaturate the henna… you want it to be just a tiny bit damp. Oversaturation will cause paint to drip in unwanted places.

2. Warm up your hands – with steam, a (safe!) fire or a hair dryer.

Note: Some also recommend wrapping your henna. This is only advisable for those who have extensive work done and if someone with experience is there when the henna has dried to do the wrapping. Incorrect packaging can lead to undesirable results. Most of the time, in my experience, there is no need to pack as long as a high-quality henna mix is ​​used. 4. Take off the henna.

Remember… you want to leave the henna on for as long as possible. But at some point you have to take it off.

When removing the henna, brush it off with your hand – again only do this after it has been on for as long as possible. Don’t wash off the henna! 5. Protect the henna from water.

If you have it, apply henna balm (like those available at Artistic Adornment) over your design before bathing, washing dishes, or going into a chlorinated pool… Don’t use synthetic moisturizers – many people have reported that this is henna Fade *Faster*. Even if you have something that says it’s natural – check the ingredients list. If it contains things other than plant names, you probably don’t want to use it. If you’re in a bind and for some reason can’t get a suitable henna balm, you can use olive oil…but it’s slimy compared to products like henna balm made specifically by/for henna artists.

This is not a required step, but it is recommended.

6. Observe the color development.

The color of your design will initially be a shade of orange (ranging from a very light orange highlighter color to pumpkin orange). It will darken over the next 48 hours, changing from orange-brown to maroon or chocolate brown. Your design will be at its darkest after 1 or 2 days.

7. Be sure to keep your henna for as long as possible.

Avoid chlorine, salt water, dish soap, bleach, other cleaning products and other harsh chemicals. You can bathe and shower as usual. Avoid hand sanitizer — it’s the #1 thing that unintentionally kills henna stains FAST. Acetone nail polish remover is also known to make henna stains fade faster.

To intentionally get rid of the henna faster, exfoliate with a loofah, pumice stone, and/or scrub. Don’t scrub too crazy and don’t hurt yourself…you have to do it piece by piece.
